As I write, my mind is distracted withpreparations to be made…! Our livescan become so busy, that events beginto stack up and become a distractionfrom the task in hand. That is when it isessential to make time for a break, torelax and recharge, however busy youare, or nothing will be achieved at all!I’m going to put the kettle on!

That’s better…. Packing for YouthCamp at Plumpton next weekend (24-27 May) can wait, the plans for the visithere of our German friends from June14th – 18th can be finalised next week;I’m focussed! We’re all guilty of fillingevery moment of every day with tasks, when often some could be deferred, allowing space to reflect and recharge.Currently, our Home Group, whichmeets in Cross Lane on Fridayafternoons, is looking at a book called‘Stop and Stare’ together, addressingthis very subject. By Nick Fawcett andbased around the poem ‘Leisure’ byWilliam Henry Davies, it encourages us,through meditations and short readingsfrom a variety of sources, to rethink ourlives and seek out those preciousspaces when we can just rest inthanksgiving for the beauty of thenatural world, or lost in a piece of music,or whatever it is that brings you peace.Getting together in a small group withothers is such a great way of becomingbetter attuned to our lives and God’s willand purpose for each of us. Let meknow if you’d like to try it!

Often, it is the unexpected encounterthat brings us joy. Last week, I’d poppedinto Worthing for some shopping, straight from the garden, so in shortsand sandals, but still in a ‘dog collar’.Going into a shop, a lady came up tome, and said, “I hope you don’t mind mesaying this, but I just had to say, you arereally approachable.” I can only assumethat my casual clothing combined with aclerical shirt, had prompted thiscomment! It really lifted my spirits; all ofus can get bogged down in outwardappearances – and sometimes it is achance remark like this that reminds methat actually it is what we do and howwe are that matters far more than whatwe’re wearing. Of course, Jesus taughtus all that anyway in Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 6, from verse 25 (also in Luke12:22-32), in his teaching about notworrying about clothes, food or drink, asGod provides for all our needs, just ashe cares for the lilies of the field. Thatbrings me back to the thought I startedwith, about making space to enjoy thenatural world! I’m so lucky, having a dogto walk; just this morning, I stopped toadmire a tree creeper as it made it’sway down a trunk on Pond Green.Wonderful!

Sadly, I missed the annual May Revelsthis weekend, as I had to attend aDiocesan meeting in Lewes all day. Weare so lucky that our Village School jnFindon still continues the tradition of

year, so all the children are able to takepart. The staff give up their Saturday tosupport the children every year, and Ireally missed being there myself. It is adefinite priority for my diary in 2020!

Our village shop is going from strengthto strength, and it has been acommercial success – so far! We mightnot have made mega profits but that isnot our purpose. We exist to serve ourcommunity and we are doing that well.We have an army of simply magnificentvolunteers who contribute in so manydiverse ways it isn’t possible to list themall, but everyone plays an importantpart. The volunteers who are highlyvisible are those who serve behind thetill but not everyone feels comfortable inthat role. We do have volunteers whoclean for us, do the laundry, fixequipment when things go wrong, maintain the website and of course, theVolunteer Management Committee(MC) each of whom has a highlyspecialist role in ensuring statutorycompliance across a whole range ofessential matters from finance, healthand safety, managing risk, establishingand maintaining the purchasingpolicies, stock taking, audit and a wholeplethora of activity. Hitherto twomembers of the MC (Steve Smith andBecky Fagan) have been responsible

for the additional responsibility ofpurchasing from the Cash and Carry. They go to Brighton twice weekly with ashopping list and bring back what isneeded. This is in addition to their MCroles.

Now a pattern has been established it isfelt that this is something which mightappeal to other volunteers. A numberof people in the past have said to methey really want to contribute but don’tparticularly want to serve behind thecounter or manage the till.So we are now looking for anyonewilling to learn about what would beinvolved in undertaking one or twoshopping trips per week to Brighton.Absolutely full support, preparation andtraining will be provided. A fuelallowance would be available. Ifanyone is interested in knowing moreplease make contact through thewebsite, or the shop, or MargaretBamford on 873737

Chairman’s Letter - May 2019.

We have continued with refurbishmentof the Hall, and I am pleased to reportthat the extension of the floor is nowcomplete. Just Wood Flooring havedone an excellent job in matching themaple boards, and the Hall is now fullyfunctioning. Sincere thanks to allresidents who loaned us money tocomplete this work.

The sound system is re-installed, withthe loop for the hard of hearing.

We have fenced off the building site, and care has been given to the entranceand garden, which are now restored forbenefit of those who hire our facility.

Unfortunately with the lighter eveningswe have experienced a new spate ofvandalism, and serious damage hasbeen caused to the roof of the newextension. This has been reported tothe Police, and with the help of CCTV itis hoped the culprits will be identified. Itis Findon Village Hall Trust’s policy toprosecute anyone damaging or causingdamage to its property.

With the lighter summer evening, thebasketball court is again in regular use.Users please note that the grounds ofthe Village Hall are not part of thisfacility, and cannot be used for carparking and late night drinking partiesafter a game. Our volunteers regularlyhave to pick up the debris theseactivities create, and relocate gardenfurniture that has been dragged acrossthe grounds.

It should be noted that people hiring thehall and grounds expect exclusive useduring their period of hire. This includesboth car park and grounds.

Fund raising continues with our annualLamb 2 Loom coffee morning andexhibition on 4th May. Many thanks toGraham and his team, whoenthusiastically organised the lambs, and all the spinners and crafters. TheCinnamon Trust and Air Ambulance hadstands to promote their charities, andhad lovely range of goods for sale.

The Café was kept busy, with coffee, cakes and our own Findon LamplePasties. Thanks to all who supportedthe event.

Our Special Film Night on 10th Mayproduces a record “turn out”. BohemianRhapsody was by special request, andproved to be very popular.

The evening raised record funds, whichare of course desperately needed.Thank you to our wonderful EventsTeam who give so generously to thecause.

Findon Fun Dog Show 6th July 2019.This annual event is always a fun dayout, and celebrates the many familydogs (many of whom have beenrescued) and their owners who live inand around Findon.

Last month the subject was taken fromLuke 18:1-8. We had fun creating amarble run, prayer hands, Justice forAll banners, prayer flags for buntingand ‘I’m praying’ door hangers. Wethought about places we pray. Wedecorated crackers and biscuits withcream cheese and shaped vegetablesto eat after our meal.

Our shared meal was delicious withjacket potatoes, ham, cheese andbeans followed by fruit crumble.

This month we will be celebratingPentecost and making craftsillustrating wind and fire in reds, yellows and oranges.

We open to visitors every Sundaythroughout the year. Lots of familiescome to visit the donkey and pony, and see all the guinea-pigs andrabbits, and lots of cats needinghomes.

We have a small charity shop open onSundays and everything in the shop isdonated by our supporters. During theweek we have a so many visitorsbringing in books, jigsaw puzzles andbric-a-brac, also dog and cat beds, toys, brushes and food when their dogor cat has died. One man rang thebell and gave me an empty egg boxwhich held an apple core and asked ifhe could go and give it to the pony ordonkey but, he left the gate openfollowing me down the garden. All thedogs went out and a neighbour rangme on my mobile to say there were alot of stray dogs out on the green. When I went out and they saw mecoming, they knew they were introuble and knew they were notallowed out, they all sheepishlyskulked back in. One visitor whomade me laugh this week, was theman who rang the bell and asked ifany of our animals would like abanana skin!

An elderly Lady being looked after bycarers took in a cat and every timethe carers asked her where the catcame from she said "Its mine, I hadher when I was a little girl". The Ladyrecently died, and we were asked totake the cat, a tabby, which possiblybelonged to someone in the

Poulters Lane area. The cat is notmicrochipped and could be partBengal.

Catherine York

It is the second year for my new roses;planted in February 2018. I had acompetition with the seven plants webought and although I loved them all, strangely I gave first place to Rosa“Surrey” even though it had the leastscent. There is so much more toconsider than you first realise: viciousthorns, dead flower heads hanging on,weak stems unable to support largeflower heads, unsightly diseases, andflowering abundance.Rosa “Surrey” was charming anddelightful with profuse clusters of 40soft-pink 2” flowers, deepening towardsthe centre, with yellow stamens, andhealthy foliage. Each flower lasted 2weeks. The bush was never scruffy andthe petals fell cleanly. It was virtuallycontinuous from June to November, withexquisite deep pink buds and unusualwavy outer petals. I am training mine tobe a climber as seen at Kew Gardens. In its first year, Clematis “Samaritan Jo”grew fast and strong in early May. At 5’tall, large flower buds appeared and justas they began to open, it drooped. Itried watering but nothing helped. I cutoff the stem at the base as there weretwo more stems. The second strongestwas almost ready and then it toodrooped. Eventually, the third stem didflower with silvery-white, star shapedflowers, with a pale-green central stripeand edged and veined in purple, withpurple stamens; flowers so beautiful thatI had to give it a second chance.Year two came with the worry of ithappening again and it did! Just at itsmost vigorous it drooped. That year Iwas moving so I took the stems off the

trellis and cut everything down to groundlevel and erected a tripod in the tub tocollect any new growth. After the move,in early August the new growth came tolife and it flowered non-stop until wellinto November. It was spectacular andonce again I gave it another chance.Early in the third year, we re-potted itinto a much larger tub with morecompost below its roots and 2” over itstop growth. Sure enough the vigorousgrowth started early and then came thewilting stem. This time I knew it was notover-watering or under-watering; it wasclematis wilt. Immediately I cut off thewilting section to a healthy leaf axil. Idid it again when the wilt went furtherdown the stem. As soon as I sawanything drooping I cut it off. Thisworked so I never lost a whole stem.Years before, when I was growing 2Etoile Violette clematis, one suddenlydrooped and dying stems dangled fromthe pergola. I cut the whole plant backto ground level. Surprisingly, 2 monthslater it grew again and produced awonderful display at the end of the year.I have always followed the rule to plantclematis 2 inches further down than thesoil level in the pot, to protect the plant ifclematis wilt strikes. New growth comesfrom the stems below the ground. Itdoes not prevent the wilt but saves theplant to grow another day. I now knowthat fast action removing the wiltingstems brings that new growth forwardmore quickly, even in the same year.Last year, I met a man in the gardencentre admiring ‘Samaritan Jo’. “Isn’tthat the most beautiful flower you haveever seen?” I enquired. “I was just

what you said.” So our jointappreciation of its ethereal beauty hadwon the plant yet another chance!

Our May meeting was our Resolutionmeeting. After some lively debating wedecided to vote in favour of bothresolutions ‘A call against the decline inlocal bus services’ and ‘Don’t fear thesmear’. Although Findon has a regularbus service there has been a massivedecline in bus services, particularly inrural areas. A local bus service can helpalleviate loneliness and promote wellbeing which is what the WI is all about.Cervical screening saves around 5,000lives a year, yet attendance is at itslowest for a decade. The WI can raiseawareness of the importance of cervicalscreening. The competition was homemadebiscuits. Tricia’s shortbread stars andmy peanut butter cookies were the tastywinners. Recipes in our next newsletter. Our next meeting is Thursday13th June. Jean East will be coming togive a talk on Parham House &Gardens. Parham is one of thecountry’s finest Elizabethan Houses, complete with a Great Hall and Long

Gallery. The gardens are set in beautifulgrounds and include a Walled Garden, herbaceous borders, a glasshouse, vegetable garden and orchard. It’s allset for an interesting talk on somewhereso close to home. The next coffee morning at the villagecafe is Thursday 20th June from 10.30 –all welcome.Visitors are very welcome – we lookforward to seeing you.Paddy Winter - President

Email receivedSirs,I collected my daily newspaper, the sunwas shining, and the world seemedwonderful, if not a bit chilly.

I looked up at Greypoint House andadmired this listed building thatdominates the Square. It is in excellent

condition. I wondered why it hadcaught my eye, and realised that forthe first times for many months therewere no advertising signs.

Oh, if it was always thus.
