Will you be a foster parent for a child in need?

Who Can You Help?

Why Do We Need You?

At the heartbreaking age of two, young Noah was alone, without a family to love and protect him. Luckily, Noah was placed into our foster care system and found a family that changed his entire life. As a result of the trauma and neglect he experienced in his early days of infancy,

Noah struggled in his relationships with others and had significant developmental delays. But with the ongoing support from his foster

parents and the BGCC Foster Care team, Noah has now found a preschool program tailored to his needs. He has made significant

gains in his communication skills and he has now begun to develop new relationships with both his peers and other healthy adults in his

life. Thanks to the support and love his foster family has given Noah, he has grown into a happy, curious and affectionate child.

Children like Noah need people like you to help change their stories. You can provide a vulnerable child or youth the chance for a brighter

future filled with love, support and opportunities.

coyotes are not usually dangerous to people. a potential exception is if they become habituated to people and lose their natural fear. regular coyote presence in your backyard is likely a result of a nearby food source. it is important to eliminate these sources of food.coyotes are very adaptable and though the majority of their diet consists of small rodents they enjoy fruit, birds and dog poop. these food sources also attract rodents which are the mainstay of urban coyote meals.if a coyote is in your yard, it is imperative that you make the animal aware it is not welcome there. coyotes can be scared off by waving sticks or brooms at them, and clanging pots and pans in their direction. coyotes should not be ignored on your property. they should be discouraged from being there.how can i help to reduce or avoid problems with coyotes?• Don’t approach or feed coyotes.• clean bbQs and outdoor cooking areas.• clean up your compost, garbage and other potential food

sources and store them in the appropriate receptacles.• Don’t leave food or pet food outside.• clean up after your pets, even in your own yard.• clean up around bird feeders.• clean up fallen fruit.• Keep watch or accompany your pet in your yard,

especially during the night and low-light hours.what should i do if a coyote approaches or acts aggressive?• Do not run or turn away.• try to scare the animal by shouting and waving your arms

overhead.• bang sticks or clang pots together towards the animal.• maintain eye contact with the animal and back away slowly.what else can i do to avoid a negative encounter?• never leave small children unattended.• never approach wildlife and teach your children not to either.• carry a shrill whistle or portable alarm with you in areas

frequented by coyotes.• Keep dogs on a leash – even in off-leash areas and

especially in areas frequented by coyotes.• Keep cats inside your home.• secure open areas under porches, decks or steps. before

sealing any openings ensure the area is unoccupied by all babies and adults.

renovating your home is stressful enough on its own, but include children and the pressure can

be overwhelming. here are three tips to help your family survive an upcoming renovation.

eStABlISH RoutINeS. Keeping life as normal as possible for your children will help maintain calm within your home. making meals in large batches that can be quickly reheated or prepped helps keep your days on schedule. setting a bathing

SAfety HAzARdS. ensure tools are always stored out of little hands' reach and safely put away at the end of each day. sealing off nearby hVac ducting or vents, using plastic hang sheets, and vacuuming with a hepa-filtered vacuum twice a day are integral to protecting your family from dust and allergens.

We all know that winter driving is a whole different beast with seemingly more snow, ice and slush every year to get in our way. While we can’t control the weather that Mother Nature throws at us, we can prepare for it to ensure safety on the roads.

Here are a few quick tips to ensure you’re prepared for any wild weather this season brings:

WINteR tIReS:

switch to winter tires when temperature drops below seven degrees celsius.

tIRe PReSSuRe: check it once a month, when the vehicle has not been driven for at least four hours. it’s an early warning system that will reduce the chances of low pressure which can lead to flats.

eMeRgeNCy WARMtH: Keep a warm sleeping bag, extra layers and tea light candles in the car in case of a breakdown.

fuel uP: Don’t let your gas tank get below the half full mark and keep water and snacks on hand for yourself.

as our olympic athletes complete their training and set off to compete in pyeongchang, south Korea from Feb 9 – 25th, for the 2018 winter olympics, we look back on this 30th anniversary of the 1988 winter olympics that calgary had the privilege of hosting. canada olympic park was formally known as paskapoo ski hill and was run by the calgary olympic Development association now known as winsport.

During the 88 winter olympics, the park was the main venue for bobsleigh, luge, nordic combined, ski jumping and freestyle skiing. calgary draws winter athletes from all over the country to take the opportunity to train at some of the top notch facilities in the world that were initially built for the 1988 olympics and have been upgraded and expanded ever since. currently the park is used for both high performance athletes training as well recreational purposes for the public. During the winter months, the park is available to the public for downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, skating, bobsledding, and most recently, tubing down the acura tube park which is the largest in western canada. in the summer months the public has access to the mountain bike trails, zip lining, and the plunge, an 810-foot, three-lane water slide. the park also hosts many winter and summer camps for athletes of all ages and interests.

in 2011 winsport opened the ice facility that includes four ice rinks – one international ice size arena and three nhL sized arenas. these arenas has been used for curling, figure skating, power skating, ringette and hockey. hockey canada training centre and winsport have teamed up to offer high performance hockey training for elite level players of all ages no matter what the position played.

in 2008 calgary was declared to be the best city to build the canada sports hall of Fame and on July 1. 2011 the 40,000 square foot facility was opened. i had the opportunity to get a glimpse of this fabulous building which is dedicated to preserving and celebrating canada’s impressive and inspiring sport history. if you have not had a chance to visit, i highly recommend it.

the markin macphail centre was opened at cop in 2014 which was designed as a training facility for high performance canadian athletes who have reached a provincial level of excellence. the center includes ice arenas, gymnasium, medical centre for treatment and recovery, and an office tower that houses the national sport school and several sport federations.

calgary signal hill is fortunate to have this facility in our back yard and accessible to all. we will continue to watch the expansion and renovations to ensure that athletes continue to have this available to pursue their dreams of someday standing on the podium in 2018 and beyond. we wish our canadian representatives good luck in pyeongchang.

Happy New year Ward 6! it has been a privilege to serve you over the last few months. the ward 6 team is working hard to continue to advocate for you and all of calgary in 2018.

What we’ve donei voted in favor of granting the calgary police service an additional $20.8 million. crime is rapidly changing in our city, and we need to ensure that calgary police remains proactive in dealing with city wide issues. this money will go towards hiring 55 new officers and equipping the cps with the tools they need to effectively do their job in a transparent manner.

i also voted in favor of the low income monthly pass for calgary transit users. calgary is a hand-up, not a hand-out city, and this program enables our citizens to get to school and work effectively – saving our city money in the long run by ensuring we keep calgarians working and productive.

What we’re doingin the next few months, there will be important infrastructure developments going on in our ward. the city will be widening bow trail to four lanes between 85th street sw and old banff coach road in 2018. construction is anticipated to start in the spring of 2018, with completion by the end of the year. the city of calgary is also undertaking a study for the sarcee trail/ richmond road sw interchange.

What we’ll doi’ve heard citizen concerns about noise mitigation with respect to the sw ring road, and i look forward to working with my provincial counterparts to find a solution that works for effected residents. Furthermore, i will continue to advocate for the timely completion of the west leg of the ring road as it is a critical piece of needed ward 6 infrastructure.

as this year progresses, i remain focused on you, and focused on ward 6!

Jeff Davison councillor, ward 6.

Happy New Year Calgary-Bow!as advertised in my December newsletter, my team and i will be opening the constituency office on Saturday, January 6th from 1-3pm for my new year open house. Light refreshments will be provided and it’s a great opportunity to chat with me, meet neighbours and to learn more about the work your provincial government is doing to make life better for albertans.

session ended in mid-December and there were a number of accomplishments made in the alberta Legislature that i would like to highlight for you here.

Bill 24: An Act to Support gay-Straight Alliances will support students who wish to create or join gay-straight alliances by ensuring every publicly funded school in alberta has a clear policy allowing them to do so. this legislation will make sure that students are the ones who decide when and how to have these deeply personal and important conversations with their parents and loved ones. gay-straight alliances create safe space for youth to access peer-to-peer support.

Following months of public engagement, the province is moving forward with Bill 26: An Act to Control and Regulate Cannabis. under the proposed legislation the province has set the legal age for purchase and use at 18, and have gave the agLc the mandate to oversee distribution, compliance and enforcement. additional aspects of the alberta cannabis Framework – such as details around drug-impaired driving, taxation and workplace safety – will be empowered through updates to other pieces of legislation before July 2018.

every year, hardworking albertans are killed or injured on the job. these incidents don’t just affect the workers involved. they have an effect on families, friends, and co-workers and employers. Bill 30: An Act to Protect the Health and Well-being of Working Albertans offers better support for workers if they get injured or sick on the job. it also amends both the ohs and wcb systems to better protect workers so they can stay healthy and safe.

these legislative changes are great foundations to start 2018 on. i look forward to connecting with you this year and continuing our shared work in making our communities strong and inclusive.

the city offers a variety of accessible services and programs that benefit people with disabilities and seniors. they include:

• accessible transit and transportation options

• accessible recreation facilities and adapted programs

• emergency preparedness tips for people with all types of disabilities

• assisted listening devices for council meetings

And much more! Visit calgary.ca/accessibility.
