Southern District Update—Jane Snyder, Southern District VP The Southern District is the smallest District in the NJSFWC composed of 7 Clubs, Woman’s Club of Absecon, Women’s Community Club of Cape May, Colony Club of Ocean City, Country Shore Woman’s Club—Marmora, Woman’s Civic Club of Hammonton, Millville Woman’s Club, Woman’s Club of Vineland and the Affiliated Club – Ex President’s Club of the Southern District for a reported total membership of 396. We are spread over 3 counties, yet our District is a very busy and productive District considering all the activities that are accomplished, all the fundraisers, all the collections of like kind donations, fashion shows, GCI delegates, scholarships, and support to all the local charities.

Our District strongly supports the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC (NJSFWC of GFWC). Part of your dues goes directly to the Federation and in turn, the Federation does so much for all the members. As with individual Clubs, the success is dependent on the members participation and involvement. Lately it seems that membership has been dropping throughout the State. So, you are all being asked as proud members of our Colony Club to step up, get involved, participate, take on some type of leadership role. Think of whom would benefit by joining our Club and how our Colony Club can benefit them. Why did you join? Share that with your chosen guests. Get them to join us at our next meeting and function. Show off our Club. Be proud of the Colony Club and the NJSFWC.

Think about this, without your support and the support of so many Club members throughout the years with the NJSFWC there would not be Douglas Residential College. The Palisades would not have been saved, the Haversack would not have existed, the support of so many organizations and charities would not take place. Could you imagine the State Projects, ie: NAMI, Prevent Child Abuse, and now CASA-NJ having no support?

Each of you can make a change. Where do you want to take our Club to keep it vibrant? Think about it. A few members in any environment can not do all the work. It takes everyone’s participation to keep things going. Share your thoughts and ideas your President, Cathi Ferber or your Membership Chairperson, Diane Mozzo. Help the membership numbers increase. Also think about attending District functions. The Council meetings are held quarterly, 3 daytime ones and 1 evening one. Think about attending State Federation functions too. Come out and support your DVP (me) and your State President, Mary Wolfe, who reigns from the Woman’s Club of Vineland, in our District.

We all enjoy desserts, refreshments and camaraderie. The Federation is hosting its Annual Open House and Tour at Headquarters on November 15th from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Reservations are a must. You’ll be glad that you plan to go.

The generosity of the District included delivery of stockings for Boatsie Boxes and 30 pounds of tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. At the September Council, the District collected and donated 133 duffel bags and 4 book bags and gift cards for the Local CASA’s. There is considerable excitement building for Women Who Reach for the Stars Campaign.

The Federation’s website was hacked 4 time this year. One of them completely wiped out information and the site had to be completely rebuilt. Many hours and patience went into this effort. Some items may still need to be updated. However, now when you log into the site, you can click onto the Materials section without a separate log in.

I hope that you all enjoy the fast approaching Thanksgiving, Christmas and Jewish Holidays.

Next month I’ll have an update for you on the resolutions that are being discussed and in process. Much is being accomplished.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS—Diane Mozzo, Membership Chairperson On Friday, November 16 from 10 AM to 1 PM we are holding a Colony Club Informational Open House in Room 116 in the library. Since the Community Center is the hub of so many activities, we are hoping some ladies will be curious and want to check us out. I need some members to help for each hourly time slot—especially for 12-1pm. Let Cathi or me know if you can assist.

Welcome Night—which is a great way to let folks know about the club—attracted many ladies who seemed interested. Let’s hope a few attend our November meeting. Thanks go to Linda Gronert, Jane Snyder, Dot Aitken, Barbara Weber, Tina Cortese, Judi Levy, and Cathi Ferber for helping me set up, clean up, and enthusiastically describe the club and its activities.

Finally, some membership facts for September and October. We have two new members, Kathy Diana and Dawn Melsheimer. Forty members attended the first meeting in September and twenty-eight in October. One guest, Deborah Neri, attended in September.

The national (GFWC) and the state (NJSFWC) federation have their two year goal to increase membership, and we need to do our part. Please let your friends, neighbors, and acquaintances know about the Colony Club and our accomplishments and activities. Invite them to attend our November 16 Open House, which is also NJSFWC Day. There will be cookies!

Fun For Us— Marita and Sue As we approach the Christmas holidays let us share one of the many customs of the holidays. On December 5 at 7 PM we will meet at 72 Walnut Road to exchange our favorite Christmas cookies. Please bring 5 - 6 dozen cookies and copies of the recipe—so all will be able to make and know what ingredients are used—and a container to bring home your cookie choices. Also, if possible bring an appetizer to share, we will provide the beverages. If you are not a cookie maker please feel free to join us for this fun evening of sharing.

Literature Department—Elaine Novello The Colony Club's Literature Group met on Wednesday October 10 208 at the beautifully decorated home of Mary Hughes. Co-hostess was Rose Marie Duncan. Thunder Dog was the book under discussion and also the choice for Our Community Reads. Author Michael Hingson was born blind, not allowing anyone or thing to stop him from pursuing his education and his passions. While the book was a quick read there were so many facets to this biography that it engendered much discussion: about his becoming a professor of Physics, an aide to invention of tools for the blind, his teaching himself to ride a 2 wheeler bike when he was young and especially his journey through life with his several guide dogs. While all enjoyed the book we each took away different aspects of the story. His dog, himself and his partner were present when Tower 1 was hit on 9/11 and made it safely down 78 floors of that building. They were luckily on the other side of the building when it was struck. Michael's parents treated him the same way as his older brother and encouraged him to enage in life and he did so with gusto! When the Library hosted a Meet and Greet the Author members of our group were there to listen to this terrific speaker. It was a great experience and our club was glad Thunder Dog was this month’s selection.  Of course nibbles and lovely desserts were provided  by our hostesses. Thank you Mary and Rose Marie. Thank you members of the Literature Club for another great meeting.

Travel Club—Carolyn Lothian On October 23rd several members of the Travel Club went to the Willow Creek Winery in Cape May Courthouse. After a nice lunch at the Winery—where we celebrated Colleen Snodgrass’ birthday—we took a buggy ride through the vineyards where the guide gave us a lot of information of the vineyard’s history along with an education on the growing of grapes. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize that they could only accommodate eight people in the buggy—a mistake we will never make again! It was a gorgeous day and a good time was had by all. Next month—November 20th, we will meet at Mary Hughes house, 26 E. Aberdeen Rd, OC at 2:00 PM. There will be no meeting in December.
