So far the forecast is looking promising so it’s an ideal time to remind your friends, family and neighbours about the market. A few people were confused by the three week gap between markets so any PR you can do on the markets behalf would be much appreciated. Thank you to all who have donated lemons - we are getting just the right amount at the moment. If you have lemons, or any other fruit to donate then please leave it in the box in the school office. We are running low on jam. If you have a keen jam maker in your family and have some spare to donate to the pancake stall that would be great. Again please leave any donations in the school office (with the makers name on it if you want a credit on the posters at the stall). This week it is the turn of Prep B to run the stall. If you are a Prep B parent and haven't volunteered for a shift its not too late to call Liz on 0400 197 732 and arrange a time. MUSIC NEWCongratulations to Grade 1A who played up a storm at Assembly on Monday. This term I will try to get as many grades as possible to do a musical item to show off all the great work we do in the Music classes. Parents, we need a bit of help with the decoration of the music room door. If you are able to help with this please contact me at [email protected]

Thanks, Stephen

Our next meeting will be Monday 5th August straight after assembly – we’d love you to join us! FITNESS TUESDAYWe had our first Fitness Tuesday class yesterday and I’m not sure about the other mums but I can definitely feel it! The morning was a great workout and I think we will all be back again next week for some more. If you would like to join us the classes will be held every Tuesday meeting in the amphitheatre for a 9.15 start and will run for approximately 45 minutes, they cater for all fitness levels and younger siblings are more than welcome to attend (the kids had great fun yesterday!) Classes are run on a casual basis with the first class being free (see flyer in this newsletter) and all subsequent classes at $17, all equipment is provided and a % of all costs goes back to the school. ICT (INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY)Studyladder:

Welcome Preps and their Families to Studyladder! Last week both Prep Grades had their first session learning how to log on, basic site navigation, and completing some Set English and Mathematics tasks. Students will be doing this in the classroom and soon for regular homework. The first few weeks they will have tasks that are very easy - to build confidence and success. Soon the prep students will bring home their logon user name and password so they can do tasks at home. Older siblings who already do Studyladder at home, are encouraged to share access to the family computer, and support younger siblings during their first sessions at home.

To see what the tasks are for this week’s Set number 20, check it out on the ICT blog.

“Jeans for Genes Day is a national day when people wear their jeans to raise much-needed funds for research into birth defects and diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, and a range of genetic disorders.” -Children’s Medical Research Institute

On Friday 2nd August workplaces, schools and streets will become a sea of denim in a united stance against childhood disease. To raise money for Jeans for Genes Day, we invite all staff and students to wear jeans to school and bring a gold coin donation to support CMRI’s aim for healthier kids and brighter futures. Just a reminder to teachers and parents that students are still required to wear school uniform shirt and jumpers, as it is not a free dress day. So set the trend and wear your jeans to help support a good cause!

Sarah, Courtney and the JSC representatives.

ASTHMA TIPS FOR PARENTS AND CARERS THIS WINTERWinter can be a hard time for people with asthma as cold weather, coughs, colds and the flu can bring on more symptoms and attacks.

The common cold is caused by a virus and it is important to try not to cough and sneeze near other people, and to wash hands properly to prevent passing on the infection. The flu is different to the common cold and can be a much more serious viral infection.

People with asthma are recommended to have an annual influenza vaccination (the flu shot). Preventing the flu protects people with asthma, as those with asthma are often unwell for longer and have a much harder time recovering from the flu.

Make sure your child’s asthma is well-controlled; this will help them to bounce back quicker from a cough or cold and will help prevent asthma attacks when they are unwell.

Some medications and herbal remedies that we use for colds and flu can make asthma worse. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about any concerns you may have.

Antibiotics are not normally prescribed for the common cold, or influenza, as these medications will not help a cold get better. Effective medications may include paracetamol and decongestants; however seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before purchasing them for your child.

Suggested remedies for the flu and the common cold are: rest, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, staying away from cigarette smoke, using steam inhalation, gargling with salty water for a sore throat and seeking medical advice if concerned at any time.

For more information on the common cold, medications and references used in this article please see the Better Health Channel (State Government of Victoria) - www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au and the NPS website - www.nps.org.au.
