HEIGHTS HYPE
21st May 2015 Newsletter 8
Our school’s Open Day was a wonderful event. This week, being Education Week, our school invited our families; mums, dads and grandparents to visit our classrooms in action and join in celebrating excellence at our school. I was thrilled to see many visitors attend in the morning and spend time helping the children with their learning activities and being involved in their lessons. I enjoyed chatting with some of our guests over morning tea and discovered that some families were visiting from Western Australia, which was most impressive. After morning tea our choirs sang a mixture of upbeat and sentimental songs ranging from our Anzac Day, this year’s school production and some regular favourites. The afternoon was of particular fun, with all children participating in a Mathematics Scavenger Hunt around the school. This was a great challenge and I was impressed by the mathematical knowledge the children demonstrated to solve the clues of the quiz. For future years, we will plan our Open Days during Education Week to become a significant annual event for our school community, in which our families join with teachers and students to celebrate excellence in all facets of education at FHPS.
Book Fair- Last Day today for sales [Thursday 21st May] I thank Jan Gallagher for all of her hard work in setting up the Book Fair this week for our children which provides a wonderful opportunity for families to view quality literature and reading material for purchase. All grades visited the Book Fair on Monday and took home their ‘wish list’ for parents to also view. As well as families being able to buy quality reading material from the Book Fair, all proceeds the school receives from sales, enables additional reading resources to be purchased for all students in the school to enjoy. If families are still wishing to purchase books, please do so today as the book fair closes promptly at 3.45pm
Walk to School Day– Friday 22nd May Tomorrow we encourage families to ‘Walk to School’ to support this annual event nationwide. Our school promotes health and wellbeing and by being an active traveller to and from school, children not only benefit from the exercise, but more importantly, parents can actively teach children about how to safely commute to school each day. Here is a link to the website for further information. http://www.walk.com.au/WSTSD/
Yr 5/6 Sovereign Hill Trip- Monday 25th May
Our Yr 5/6 students will travel to Sovereign Hill this coming Monday to consolidate their understanding of the ‘Gold Rush’, the unit of inquiry being studied this term. As it is a long trip, the children have an early start to the day. Children need to be at school no later than 7.45am as the bus leaves promptly at 8am. The expected arrival time back at FHPS will be 4.30pm. This will be a wonderful excursion for the children, who will gain a ‘first hand’ educational experience from this program.

Café Reading On Tuesday our teaching staff completed their first day of learning about a reading program that will be implemented throughout the school in the coming weeks. The children will soon start to share their understanding of the program will parents as they begin to incorporate the key elements of the program into their daily literacy learning. The initial focus will be on children’s sustained reading on a range of texts to continually practice comprehension, accuracy and fluency. Children will be expected to borrow more books to read each day and over the school week. Research proves that children get better at reading by practising their reading. Hence the importance of promoting reading, both at school and in the home. Parents can help beginning readers by discussing the story with the children and reading to children. As children become more capable, the reading can be shared and independent readers are encouraged to discuss the book with parents as they independently practice
each night.
Lazy Town On Monday our Prep to Year 2 students were involved in the Lazy Town Incursion. Lazy Town is a global sensation children's program that engages and inspires children to be healthy and active. As you will see from the photos below, the students had a great time.
Kind Regards, Cheryl Clark, Principal

Message from the Assistant Principal Congratulations to all the Year 3 and 5 students and teachers for making it through NAPLAN testing. All the students worked well and I am confident they did the best they could on the day. Last Wednesday night all staff attended a Professional Development Session with Nadia Walker an Educational Consultant. All staff enjoyed working with Nadia and found it a valuable experience. We developed our math's mission statements and looked at the structure of a math's lesson to get the best learning out of our students. All math's lessons will be broken into :
1. number fluency,
2. launch (explicit teaching of topic) ,
3. discover (students exploring and on task) and
4. summarise (explain and elaborate).
We want all our students: to experience success in mathematics, to be able to use multiple strategies, to have an inquiry mind, to make connections with math's in the real world, to be risk takers, to be able to demonstrate and explain understandings, to be persistent, to be willing to have a go, to have a strong number sense.
We are looking forward to working with Nadia more in the future.

This term has been a busy time in the
Here are some of the highlights so far:
NAPLAN
Our year 5 students have successfully completed their NAPLAN testing for this year.
We were so impressed by the way they worked during this time, showing great
concentration and ability to stay focused. All students approached this years test with
a great positive attitude and we are very proud of their efforts. Well done!
INTERSCHOOL SPORTS
This term we have begun our interschool sports competition with our first round
being held at Woodleigh Junior Campus. Our students had the opportunity to compete
in Aussie Rules, soccer and netball. We had great results with a win in soccer, but the
standout effort came from the way our students represented themselves and the
school. There was a great display of sportsmanship and teamwork by all participants
and we couldn’t have been happier with the way our students performed. Training
sessions are being held weekly to help improve our skills with home and away games
held on Fridays. Thank you to Mr. Hampton for the organization and running of this!
INQUIRY UNIT This term we are exploring the Gold Rush as our unit of inquiry. The students have
been working independently and in small groups to research our key questions. They
have gained knowledge of important dates and events, tools used during this time, the
lifestyle of the miners and how this period of time helped to shape the state of Victoria.
Students have been given a project that will be completed over the coming weeks and
will have a great opportunity to further their knowledge on our excursion to Sovereign
Hill on Monday!
DANCE Our resident dancers Miss McIntosh and Mrs. Kroenert have launched our lunch time
Dance Club each Wednesday in the Senior Homestead. With a combined 30 years of
experience both teaching and performing, the students will be provided with a great
opportunity to learn skill and technique whilst having fun with these two teachers. The
student participation has been fantastic so far and students will have the chance to
perform their routines throughout the year for the school.
The children have been looking closely at Italy and the major cities. One city
that they have focussed on has been Venice. We have explored many of the
regions of Italy and unpacked the language to describe the landscape. Here is our
snapshot into Venice and the contrast to our city of Melbourne.
The children have been exploring their use of language to describe the scenes that they have encountered on
their journey through Italy.
Years 1 and 2 collaboratively created their descriptions with the teacher, after exploring the nouns
and adjectives of the scenes they saw.
Here are a few of the vivid and imaginative descriptions:
1B – In Sicily the buildings are squashed together. Around the buildings are steep, rocky
mountains and dangerous cliffs.
1K – In Rome there are many broken buildings. There are also humungous stone
statues, pretty fountains and strong, curved bridges.
2H – In Venice there are banana-shaped boats. People travel in these boats because there
are not many roads. These boats are called Gondolas.
2S – In Florence the land has tall, leafy trees and green, overlapping hills. The bright
sun helps to grow yummy olives.
In Liguria the never ending lush land scape grows into the big castle like a house formed into the mountain. The mountains fall into the rocky hills and the crystal
blue water surrounds the rock walls of Liguria. The grey, twisted road crawls
around the steep beautiful cliffs. ~ NOAH 5/6 B ~
As the sun descends, the beautiful pink and purple colours create a clear and vibrant sunset in Venice. The old buildings and majestic towers stand guard by the
shimmering blue sea. The strong gate protects the pear shaped boats from being
stolen and being used to get to Venice. The few green trees that you can see look beautiful against the pastel coloured sky.
~ Vani 5/6 M ~
In Liguria sunbathing people lay on the yellow sand. In the bright blue water, red,
round buoys bob in the gentle waves. Humungous mountains cover the sky. Small
blue boats lay in the bright blue water. ~ Anthony 3/4 H ~
Surrounded by the forest green trees is a cramped city sitting next to the still and
ghostly ocean. Sitting in the water is a deserted boat floating to shore with jagged
cliffs surrounding it. The sunset slowly gleams on the crowded city as night transforms into morning.
~ Samuel 5/6 B ~
In Rome the bright sunset shines beautifully over the water. Amazing, rich buildings are surrounded by old statues and the streets are covered with green mould.
~ Liam J. 3/4 M ~
In Venice there is an old, rustic arched shaped bridge hovering over green, calm
murky water in which two long black majestic like gondolas float past. People are dressed in thin summer clothes watching the long black gondolas flowing down and
under the Rialto Bridge.
~ Kaden 5/6 B ~
The humble region of Piedmont is guarded by two beautiful, old rock statues.
Beyond the luscious, calm, blue water are an assorted range of old, brick houses cramped below the wavy, blue hillside, surrounded with tall, leafy, green trees.
~ Beth 5/6 K ~
ICT
With ICT (Information and Communication Technology) an ever expanding and changing world, we need to ensure we are keeping well-informed. Our main priority is to not only teach our students how to use and create with technology, but also to stay safe when engaging online. Frankston Heights has registered to become an eSmart School. This entails completing several modules, through various stages to gain our accreditation. We are excited to not only bring more technology and skills to our students, but also to ensure they are well equipped with life-long skills to maintain safety and respect online. Each newsletter will include some cyber-safety tips to help you, as parents and carers, to be aware of what’s happening online and how to monitor and keep your children safe. We all ensure they are safe in the physical world, discussing topics like ‘Stranger Danger’ however we need to be just vigilant with the online world. Please read the attached brochure and discuss some of the topics with your child. Below is a glossary of terms so you can be up with the lingo!

Inappropriate material – means material that deals with matters such as sex, cruelty, discrimination or violence in such a manner that is likely to risk student safety physically or emotionally, or is incompatible with the school environment.
