CROMER AND SHERINGHAM ARTS FESTIVAL

Page 2: COAST 2010

The first Cromer and Sheringham Arts Festival

23-31 October 2010

Sceptics might carp: ‘Not another Festival! Aren’t there already enough to go round?’

To which I’d reply that festivals make things happen that we’d otherwise not have the chance to enjoy.

Festivals focus the mind in a way that scattered, individual events do not.

They punctuate the year.

They put a place on the map.

They enhance a sense of community.

I think we’ve got a long way to go before we suffer from ‘Festivalitis’.

Page 3: COAST 2010

And if ever somewhere deserved an arts festival, it must be this favoured stretch of North Norfolk coast.

Things have come a long way since, over a century ago, Clement Scott, with his lyrical evocation of the delights of ‘Poppyland’, made it a magnet for art makers and art lovers of every stripe.

So it’s great that erstwhile rivals, Cromer and Sheringham – the Crab and the Lobster – have now got together to celebrate and show off the creative vitality of this area - perched, in Ian Collins’ fine phrase, ‘on the brink’.

TO COAST!The organisers have worked hard to ensure that there is a rich and varied programme in store for us in the last nine days of October.

So much so that, even though ‘Coast’ is a first, it’s already generated that indispensable complement to any arts festival worth its salt: a Fringe!

Robert Short Hon. President.

C O A S T G L A S S Contemporary Glass Events and Exhibition

Demonstrations, using a unique mobile hot glass unit, by international artists Scott Benefield (U.S.A.) and Andrea

Spencer (UK) will take place in the Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand, from 23rd – 31st October. The Centre will be open from 10.30am – 4.00pm.

On Wednesday 27th October the artists will be giving an illustrated talk at 2pm in the Little Theatre Sheringham. There will be no demonstrations in the Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand, on that day.

Accompanying this will be an exhibition featuring the work of the resident artists Scott Benefield and Andrea Spencer as well as work by artists from the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Scott’s work draws on the traditional Italian techniques of glassblowing, using coloured canes to form intricate patterns in the body of the vessel. The result is a contemporary updating of the traditions of Murano glass, with sleek modern forms adorned with complex decorative details.

Andrea’s glass has the material properties of transparency and fragility. The flameworking process used allows a great degree of fine detail. This process evokes both science and craft and becomes a metaphor that carries a multitude of interpretations.

The exhibition will be open from 10.30am – 4.00pm and will continue until the 12th November.

You don’t need an encyclopaedic knowledge of poetry to join - one of the many pleasures of belonging is finding out about poets new and old, established and rising stars.Throughout the year we organise poetry events where we like to give a “leg up” to those starting out on their chosen path. We have been meeting for over 60 years and in addition have organised the prestigious Cley Little Festival of Poetry.
