You’re on the road from “yes” to “Ido.” On your wedding day you’ll sharethe promise of a lifetime of love withfriends and family. Build the occasionwith the best in both of you, makingyour day a celebration of yourselves andthe love you share. Your wedding canbe traditional or whimsical and still beall about you.

As you write the story of your wed-ding day start with the basics: Who?What? Where? When? How? Why?

Is there something special to both ofyou that brought you together: a sharedcommitment to green living, a culturalcontext, a love of old movies? Perhapsyou want to build your wedding arounda theme or weave that theme into amore traditional format.

Picking your date can also say a lot

about you. Do you love to share thehush of the first snowfall, hot cider anda roaring fire? Or do you look forwardto sunny skies, warm breezes and all-you-can eat raspberries? If you wantmountains of fresh fruit, corn on thecob or fresh wild salmon, make sureyou choose a date when those thingsare in season. In Italy and France theysay a wet bride is a lucky bride, so if youwant a casino reception, maybe con-sider November. What you like, fromthe weather to the menu, should guideyou to a time and place that feels per-fect.

The Pacific Northwest is full of stun-ning indoor and outdoor locations;beautiful places to fit any budget. Win-ter and fall weddings will look for anindoor location: an elegant hall, his-

toric home, romantic chapel, water-front resort or rustic inn. Don’t dis-count the brilliant colors of fall and thestark beauty of winter – maybe youwant to find a way to bring the outsidein, whether with a great view or sea-sonal foliage. Spring and summer wed-dings can take full advantage of thenatural beauty of our area, choosingfrom dozens of public and privateparks, vineyards, gardens, farms andmeadows. Water weaves through ourregion, so consider a sunset wedding onthe water.

For travel bugs, there’s always thedestination wedding: a beach inHawaii, the deck of a cruise ship, apalazzo in Venice. It’s an option thatwill limit who can attend and whatother options you have, such as choos-ing a caterer, baker or photographer, but at least you’re already on your hon-

eymoon! Maybe you can plan a recep-tion when you return to share the oc-casion, and maybe some memoriesfrom the trip, with those who couldn’tattend.

Now who’s coming? Everyone inboth of your address books, or just yourimmediate families? Or something inbetween? The number of guests willguide a lot of your decisions, frombudget to location, but it will also setthe tone for the event. Do you want theintimacy and serenity of a small event,or do you want a big, lively crowd?

Whether you do it all yourself withthe help of friends and family, or hireplanners, caterers and photographerswill depend on your budget, but also onwhat kind of experience you want tohave. Do you want to roll up yoursleeves and work together, or do youwant to lay back and enjoy? On this

couples choosing a green weddingwill reduce their impact as they sharetheir commitment to sustainabilitywith their guests.

Green wedding guru Kate L. Har-rison, author of “The Green BrideGuide,” recommends having a localrather than a destination wedding;using local, seasonal flowers andfood; choosing recycled or vintagedresses and rings, using real flowersas cake decorations, recycled paperinvitations, and making a charitabledonation in honor of your guests in-stead of party favors as options for re-ducing a wedding’s environmentalfootprint.

If you aren’t eloping and having yourreception at a local restaurant, chancesare you will want to hire professionalsto make sure your day is just the wayyou want it: Photographers, musicians, florists, caterers, and a wedding plan-ner and coordinator.

Planners and other wedding profes-sionals take the burden off the weddingcouple, friends and family, and ensureeverything is as perfect as you wouldwant your wedding day to be.

A wedding planner may seem an un-necessary expense until you factor inhow much time and headache they cansave. Planners have done the researchyou need done, have established con-nections with vendors and can tell youwho can get you what you want, at aprice you can afford. They can keep youwithin budget and on schedule.

A wedding planner will also coordi-nate all the details on the big day, oryou may opt to do the planning your-self and hire a coordinator for the re-hearsal and wedding.

“If you have a planner, you have it allthere, all done the way you want it,without the stress,” said plannerDanielle Elder of Added Details. Plan-ners can also help you cut costs, sheadded, using a growing number of do-it-yourself options you can coordinatewith professional services. “There areso many options.”

Hiring a professional caterer andhaving your cake professionally bakedcan take a substantial load off weddingpreparations: it really takes a pro tofeed over thirty people, and they areable to buy and prepare food more eco-nomically than home cooks. The sameis true for a florist, who can save youmoney in the end by suggesting lowerpriced options for a given season andaccessing wholesale sources.

Music is a very powerful personal ex-pression that sets the tone for yourwedding. You can pop in a CD of yourfavorite songs, but you may want tohire live music or a professional musi-cian to ensure a flawless musical at-

mosphere. The DJ or musicians mayalso serve as an alternative to having amaster of ceremonies, keeping the cer-emony on schedule.

A professional photographer offers asimilar leap in quality and dependabil-

ity. Current trends have brought com-mercial wedding photography closer tofashion shots than the posed shots ofyour parents’ wedding. “I’m seeing aneffort to do something more personal,a photojournalistic approach ratherthan stopping the day,” said photogra-pher Clinton James. Choosing theright photographer will pay off withimages that are treasured for years.

Hiring any professional needs to bean early step in planning your wedding.“Find someone who has the personal-ity you can work with, the portfolio youlove, and the price you can work with, and book them now,” said James. Manysought after professionals, like choicelocations, are booked a year or more inadvance.

Family members and friends mayoffer to reduce costs and personalizethe event: decorating cupcakes for acupcake tower, preparing favors, floraldisplays on the tables. They should bewelcomed as part of the wedding teamas long as the bride and groom feelcomfortable either accepting what theycome up with, or admitting it’s notwhat they want. “Delegate, delegate, delegate,” Elder said. “Find people whowant to get involved and assign themjobs.”

If wedding dresses are an economicindicator, things are looking up.

“One of the more noticeable trendsis the return of the big, full ballgown, with the sash waistline,” said PamNeedham, owner of Alicia’s BridalShoppe and organizer of the Bridal In-spirations Weddding Expo in Belling-ham this January.

Another sign of the times is the one-shoulder dress, inspired by MichelleObama’s inaugural ball gown, a one-shouldered white chiffon dress embel-

lished with appliqués and beading, bydesigner Jason Wu.

“Flowers are very big this year,”Needham said. “Floral embellishments,three-dimensional floral accents, flow-ers in headpieces and paired withfeathers.”

Textural fabrics, such as brocade, arealso showing up in more weddinggowns for 2010.

Trends aside, whether it’s a grand ballgown or a simple sheath, there is adress for every budget and every taste.

“There are so many options when itcomes to the dress it’s mind-blowing,”Needham said.

It’s ideal to start looking for a dress ayear before your wedding and get anorder in a good six to seven months be-fore the big day to leave time for alter-ations. However, brides in a rush canstill get a great dress off the rack andhave it ready in days if you’re willing toaccept what’s available. The bottomline, Needham said, is that “when youfind something you love, buy it, don’twait,” advice she said was as relevantfor a DJ or a caterer as much as it wasfor the dress.

Perhaps the most underappreciatedpart of the bride’s wardrobe is hershoes. “A lot of girls are going with col-ored shoes this year with their whitedress,” Needham said. Strappy sandalsPh

are another leading trend, and somewedges have come out that make abride’s footing a little more sure duringan outdoor wedding but still let herhave sparkly feet.

“Your shoes are probably the mostimportant thing because you’re on yourfeet for so long,” Needham said. Sherecommends being conservative withthe height of heels you choose, andwearing them a few times before thewedding to break them in. Maybeyou’ll want to have a backup pair ofshoes, remembering to get them withthe same heel height. If you go from apair of three-inch heels for the cere-mony to flats at the reception yourdress will be dragging on the floor.

Then again you can change yourdress too! “Something new we’re see-ing a lot of this year is another little

white or ivory cocktail dress for part ofthe reception and the going away,”Needham said.

Bridesmaid dresses are getting moreflexible, with many brides opting to lettheir bridesmaids choose their ownstyles and fabrics consistent with acolor theme.

They can make a fashion statementof their own. 2010 is seeing a return tothe black tuxedo, after a trend towardearthtones last year. It’s the accessoriesthat personalize the groom’s wardrobe.Cumberbunds are making a comebackin 2010 as the partner to the fairytalelook of a bride in a full ballgown.Grooms can also inject splashes ofcolor with a tie or a vest.

“Really, a couple can choose from allspectrums depending on what they en-vision for their day,” Needham said.

Accessories Accessories can feel like a real splurge that won’t take too big a bite out of

your budget.Birdcage veils have been popping up on some of the hippest heads in Hol-

lywood. This classic pairs a short face-covering veil with a headpiece deco-rated with crystals, a swirl of feathers or silk flowers dappled with pearls.Mantilla veils are in style this season, and a sumptuous lace mantilla pairsperfectly with a simple dress. Some brides are opting to skip the veil andchoosing from a dazzling selection of hair jewelry incorporating feathers, flowers, crystals, anything you can imagine.

Wedding jewelry is a way to express yourself and add some zing to a sim-ple outfit. Maybe both bride and groom want to pick out a special piece towear on the big day, and maybe even the day after! Couples have been choos-ing wedding gifts for each other that are very personal and can be part ofeveryday, but still express the specialness of your commitment.

Colors Colors are a very important part of the thematic continuity of a wedding,

from flowers to wineglasses to dresses. Choose colors that work in your lo-cation and are compatible with your wedding season and theme.

Current autumn and winter trends are warm shades: pinks, burgundies, browns in shades reflecting natural light and richness. Gold is also makinga comeback. For spring, designers are forecasting the pairing of mood-lift-ing brights with rich bold colors: chocolate and turquoise, raspberry andlime green. A favorite for warm summer themes has been orange and fuschia,or the traditional black and white with a pop of a single bright color. Somecouples have been choosing a monochromatic color theme: choose a singlecolor and use it in a full spectrum of shades. Think pale pink to deep red, orapricot to burnt orange.

An ongoing trend in every aspect ofmodern weddings is to make themmore personal and more intimate, evenif the couple is exchanging vows infront of hundreds.

The bride and groom often choose toface their guests, rather than turn theirbacks to them in the traditional man-ner. Children and other family mem-bers are also playing more prominentroles in the ceremony. If a couple is alsobringing together two families, theymay ask the children to join them in acandle ceremony, in which they light acandle together to honor their unity asa family.

Many couples choose to write, mod-ify, or supplement their own vows, de-pending on the religious practices thatwill be part of the ceremony. Writingyour own vows is extra work, but it canadd emotional intensity and honesty tothe ceremony.

Your officiant can help you write yourvows and integrate them into the cere-mony, one of many reasons to choosesomeone who really clicks with youpersonally and spiritually.

Emergency kit Your wedding is supposed to be fun, not a headache. That said, the

event can be overwhelming and little glitches can seem like mountains. The first thing every bride and groom needs in their emergency kit is adeep breath. Remember to breathe and enjoy; details are just details; remember the big picture.

On the more practical side, have a little bag of goodies ready to coverthe rough spots. Have something on hand for a headache or indigestion. For wardrobe failures pack up some double-sided tape and safety pins, clear nailpolish for runs if you’re wearing hose, maybe even a tiny sewingkit. Your feet need to be your friends. Some spray antiperspirant on theirtootsies to keep them dry and comfortable and keep straps from slidingand causing blisters. Pack some moleskin or pads just in case. Finally, ifyou don’t have a wedding coordinator make sure you or someone youdelegate has a charged cell phone and a list of all the vendors involved, just in case.

Florists and caterers report that re-cent trends for the wedding receptionshave been for smaller, simpler, moreeconomical but also more personalizedand informal weddings.

“Family style has been a good way togo,” said Market Street Catering exec-utive chef Bryan Weener. “It’s more ca-sual, more intimate and a little morerelaxed,” than a buffet style or platedmeal. There is still a beautifully settable and food is served on platterswhich diners pass to each other, creat-

ing a homey, holiday atmosphere andserving as an ice-breaker for guestsseated next to a new face.

Fondue is another fun, relaxed andcosy idea, whether cheese fondue aspart of the meal or a chocolate fonduestation as a substitute for cake.

Floral designer Pat Jones echoed atrend towards personalized details andnatural simplicity. “They are lookingfor small bouquets with more texture, greens, more natural products, evenrocks and moss, shells,” she said. “It’s

classy but it’s woodsy too.” Bringingthe outside inside is a theme withmodern wedding décor, Jones said:branches of native, locally grownshrubs; candles set in sand and shellsto reflect our shorelines. “People areasking for more locally grown flowers,so it’s very seasonal,” she said. A springwedding will have Skagit Valley tulips, while a summer bride will carry abright bunch of dahlias, a fall bride canopt for golden leaves and richly coloredasters, and winter brides can use sea-sonal greens with floral accents.

Both Weener and Jones said they areseeing growing demand for seasonal, locally grown products. Weener alsosaid some couples are celebrating theirancestry by including ethnic foods intheir menus.

2009 was a year of belt tightening forweddings and while professionals areseeing an upswing in 2010, there is stillan interest in being cost-savvy. Weenersuggested couples budget $35 to 40 perguest as a minimum, whether for a sit-down dinner or a cocktail party with aspread of appetizers. “Appetizers are

ten times more labor intensive,” he said.“It’s not the cheaper way to go.”

Because there are more choices insummer, flowers can be less expensive,Jones said. Hand-tied bouquets insteadof a formal bouquet in a holder can bea beautiful and cost-effective way to go,and the bouquets can be placed invases, becoming floral displays for thereception.

Couples can also save money by get-ting married midweek, or even on aFriday when you can get discountsfrom rentals, caterers, even a band or aDJ. A midweek wedding also takes lessadvance notice. A summer Saturdaywedding will need to be booked ninemonths to a year in advance, but a Fri-day in fall can be put together muchcloser to the wedding day.

Jones said turning to the pros forsome but not all of the wedding décoris one solution for cost-conscious cou-ples.”

A realistic budget from the begin-ning will make planning more fun andmore fruitful, they both agree. “Youshould price out your flowers beforeordering your dress,” Jones said. “Leav-ing things for the last minute will leaveyou disappointed.”

After the bride and groom, the starof the reception is unquestionably thecake – even if it isn’t cake!

Most couples still are looking forsome version of the classic tier cakebut it’s coming with more and moreoptions.

“We do a lot of different flavorsnow,” said cake designer and bakerBarb O’Brien of Barb’s Pies and Pas-tries. “It’s not your dry white cakeanymore.” You can find a B-52 cakeor spice cake for fall weddings, lus-cious fresh berry cakes in the summer.Couples can keep costs down by sup-plementing a smaller cake with sheetcake. “You can get your cake for halfthe price and for many people that’swhere their budget is,” O’Brien said.

Fresh flowers have become the pre-ferred decoration for a wedding cake, and are often complemented byfrosted floral designs. Gold is alsomaking a comeback for details oncakes, especially for cooler seasonweddings. While cake designers areseeing couples asking for smallercakes in a tighter economy, they stillwant it to be extravagant.

More and more couples are opting

for an alternative to traditional cakes. The cupcake tower is well estab-

lished as a fun and inexpensive op-tion that you can do yourself with alittle help from your friends and yourlocal craft store. You can buy thestand to set the cupcakes on mimick-ing the traditional tiered cake, and ei-ther bake them youselves or buyblank cupcakes. Using preboughtdecorative elements, get some friendstogether for a cupcake-decoratingparty! Make a super-sized super-spe-cial cupcake for the bride and groom.

Wedding favors run the gamutfrom a box of candies to a charita-ble donation. Your favors are a wayof thanking your guests for sharingthe day with you.

Recent trends on the sweet sidehave seen candy bars – a stationwith bowls of unique candies andcolorful takeout boxes whereguests can help themselves – and

It’s also important to remember sea-sons when choosing where to go. Asummer wedding in the Northwest islovely and sunny, but a summer honey-moon in the British Virgin Islands canbe sweltering and uncomfortable.

With the green wedding trend comesthe green honeymoon, and it also hap-pens to be budget friendly.
