Teachtaireachtan Chathaoirligh

Tá fáilte roimh go léir ar an ocáid mór seo i bPáirc Uí Rinn. Tá súil agam go mbainfidh gach duine taitneamh as na gcluichí, agus cuirim fáilte spéisialta roimh na fóirne, Uí Mac Coille, Fánaithe an Ghleanna, Ceann Toirc agus Mhicil Naofa. Fáilte fé leith roimh na h-imreoirí, na h-oifigigh, na réiteoiri agus a fhóirne – táim cinnte go mbeidh sár cluichí spóirtúil againn.

You are all very welcome to Páirc Uí Rinn today for the biggest occasion in the Cork GAA hurling calendar, our Senior Hurling Final, which is preceded by the Premier Intermediate Football Semi-Final replay between Kanturk and St. Michael’s. I would like to extend a particular welcome to our four participating teams, and to their supporters. In the Hurling Final, reigning champions Imokilly are seeking a third title in a row, a feat which hasn’t been achieved since 1982, while Glen Rovers will hope to add to their own impressive haul of twenty-seven titles. That Imokilly scuppered their own three-in-row bid in 2017 certainly adds an extra element of interest to today’s meeting.

Fr. O’Neill’s progression to the Premier Intermediate Hurling decider meant that a different curtain-raiser was required for today, and the Premier Intermediate Football semi-final replay fits that bill very well. The sides could not be separated last weekend, and both will be all out today to secure a place in the County Final.

Congratulations and best of luck to today’s referees, Nathan Wall (Senior Hurling) and David Murnane (Premier Intermediate

Football) and to their officials. It is a huge honour to be selected to referee a County Final, and Nathan is fully deserving of this appointment.

Today, continuing what has now become a regular element of County Finals day, we honour the 1994 Carbery team that defeated Midleton in the County Final that year. It’s wonderful to mark these occasions and all are very welcome to today’s game.

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the retirement of our long-time and legendary groundsman, Tommy Lynch, perhaps coming a little early as he only celebrated his 90th birthday recently! It would be impossible to put into words what Tommy has done for us all over many years, and he will be very much missed here at Páirc Uí Rinn and also at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Ní bheidh a leithéad arís ann.

Finally, and as always, my thanks to all who made the staging of today’s games possible – our administrative staff, my fellow County Board officers, our stewards and grounds staff, the Coaching and Games staff, our programme editor and all whose unseen efforts are vital for the smooth running of occasions like this. My particular thanks to the match-day team here at Páirc uí Rinn who put so much work into the planning of these events and without whom days like today would be impossible.

Míle buíochas libh go léir.

For the past two years, Imokilly have been the dominant force on Leeside and in the previous two that honour belonged to the Glen.

So, it’s only right and fitting that today’s final collision is between the two of them.

There has been a school of thought from the outset that Imokilly would not be stopped in their bid to become the first divisional unit to accomplish the three-in-a-row such was the depth of resources that they contain.

Losing three of their stars from last season, Colm Spillane, Niall O’Leary and Ciaran O’Brien has made little difference to them, they have marched into today’s final without too much difficulty.

In doing so they have seen off Midleton, Sars and the ‘Barrs and have impressed considerably.

Their greatest strength is their ability to turn the screw on their opponents in a very short space of time.

Against the ‘Barrs in the semi-final they drilled in a brace of goals after the city team had made a very positive start.

And despite the fact that it was still very early in the contest it put the writing on the wall for the rest of the game.

Their attacking unit is viewed as the best in the championship with all six capable of putting up big scores.

Declan Dalton has been a hugely significant influence in their scoring return, well capable of posting scores from 100 yards or more.

All over the field, there is quality from Colm Barry at full-back out.

Present and past inter-county players are in every line and their weak links are minimal if any at all.

But today they probably face their greatest challenge, a Glen team that will throw the kitchen sink at them.

The city team have lived dangerously on a few occasions en-route but that old Glen spirit has shone through when most required.

The side is very well balanced with Cathal Hickey in splendid form at number one.

Brian Moylan, Stephen McDonnell, Donal Cronin, Hoggy and Conor Dorris know what’s required on days like this.

Their level of consistency has been tops over the past few years and they’ll have their homework done on how to curb Dallton, Seamie Harnedy, Paudie O’Sullivan, Brian Lawton and so on.

Conversely, the East Cork side will be very aware of Horgan’s huge threat in a game that is loaded with potential.

The free-taking of Dalton and Horgan will be crucial too and there’s no reason at all why the Glen cannot come through.

However, there is still the slightest of tendencies to fancy Imokilly on the basis of their greater attacking potential.

But this Glen bunch of players want this title as much as any of their previous 34, maybe even more.

Fasten the seat belts for an old-fashioned Cork County final, no quarter asked or given.

hurling FinAl preview■ GLEN Rovers completed a hat-trick of Cork County SHC titles in the

years 1958, ‘59 and ‘60 and today they will be trying to thwart Imokilly in a similar quest.

A few words with ....

Fr O’Neill’s & imOkilly

Declan DaltonWE are all well aware of dual players but it’s not too often that you have a dual position on a Cork side. But that’s exactly what Declan was in his second year involved in the U21 side (now U20).In his first year involved with the squad he was one of the goalkeepers and in his third year involved he was an outfield player. But in his second year with the squad he was both an outfield players and sub-keeper, something you don’t see too often at club level, not to mind inter-county sides. But Declan takes it all in his stride and says he just loves to play hurling and has done since he was about four years-of-age.He recalls going down to the pitch since then and to this date, some 17 years later. Even though he is only 21 Declan has been around both Fr O’Neill’s and Imokilly sides for some time. With his club he picked up county medals at U15 and U16 and followed that up with two minor county titles as well.Up until U15 he played in goal for his club, but after that he opted to play outfield with the club, but continued to play in goal with both Imokilly and Cork. One of the reasons he decided to come out of goal was he wanted to do so for Cork long-term, something he has achieved and no doubt will have plenty more days in the red jersey yet.He has represented Imokilly from U14 up and this is his third year on the senior squad, thus making him one of the players in search of the three in-a-row today. He has countless medals at this stage and picks out his first county senior medal with Imokilly as one of the memorable moments on the pitch. He says you can add in the U21 county win with the club last year as another game he will never forget. But amongst the highlights of his sporting career to date he goes all the way back to an U11 East Cork final against Sars. He recalls they were 11 points down at one stage in that game and with time running out they had narrowed it to two points.

Declan came out of goal to take a free about 65 metres out and he says he was going for a point, but it dropped into the back of the net and they won by a point.Whilst he doesn’t consider himself to be superstitious he did say that anytime leading up to the county final last weekend with Fr O’Neill’s and today’s game that he would touch wood if he was thinking about them.He would be thinking about the game and then would have to ‘touch wood’ but he wouldn’t touch his hurley as the wood.Over the years Declan said he had plenty of great coaches/managers and is thankful to them all for their work with him. On top of them he says his parents, Rob and Mary and his sister, Donna, have all been a huge support to him. He has a special mention for his grandfather, Jerry Dalton, who he says was a massive influence on him, on and off the pitch.Away from hurling Declan likes to play a bit of golf and is currently playing off 7, which shows he is as good with the golf club as he is with a hurley. He is currently serving an apprenticeship an an electrician with RMC Electrical in Midleton and no doubt they and his team-mates will be hoping he is sparking against the Glen today.

He may be only 23-years-old, but the defender would be considered a character in the dressing-room and he will be hoping to add to his collection of senior county medals today having been part of their side that won in 2015 and 16.

Like many players, the electrical instrumentation technician at Pfizers, first put on his boots at four years of age in the street leagues and is thankful to his parents, Donal and Olive, for all the support they have given him.

He can recall going to blitzes to represent the club, with early influences on his career including the likes of Pat Horgan snr, Mick Kenefick and Paddy Barry.

Whilst he didn’t enjoy too much success at underage level he still recalls with pride winning a Sciath na Scol medal with Scoil Oilibheir.

He was involved in a city and county win at U14 level and like all those present he remembers the county final, not just for the win but also for the torrential rain that fell on the night.

Aside from the obvious players he looked up to he also has great respect for Graham Callanan, who David described as ‘someone who would always have your back on the pitch.’

Outside of the club amongst his sporting GAA heroes were the likes of Seán Óg Ó hAilpin and Joe Deane.

In his first senior game for the Glen he ended up marking Joe, a game he will always recall

with special memories.

His first senior county final, which they won, was a day he described as out of this world and ‘unreal’ to be part of and scoring a goal that day made it extra special, a moment to treasure long after his playing days are over.

Away from GAA David is a big fan of the Irish soccer team as well as Liverpool.

He goes over to Anfield when he can and like many of their fans will be hoping that this season brings an end to their long way to land the league title, something he has never seem them do.

He was lucky enough to be there when Robbie Brady scored his famous goal against Italy.

He recently became a fan of the NFL and will be hoping that he and his team-mates touchdown in Blackpool with the cup after today’s final.

to close the decade! At the outset of the Senior Hurling C’ship it was generally agreed that Imokilly would make it 3 in a row, the question been asked was could anyone stop them.So far this year a few have tried, but failed, among them Midleton, Sarsfields and St Finbarrs. This afternoon it’s the turn of Glen Rovers to try and deny them a 3rd successive title. In many ways it is fitting that is famed Glen Rovers who stand in their way, as these two sides have shared the last four C’ships.Glen were champions in 2015 and 2016, ironically it was East Cork sides they defeated in those finals, Sarsfields and Erin’s Own respectively. Imokilly were impressive winners in 2017 over Blackrock and equally so last year against East Cork rivals Midleton. So, whoever wins this afternoon could very well be described as the team of the decade. It is also Glen’s 5th appearance in a final this decade, 44th in total, 2 wins 2 losses is their record.Another aspect to the decider, is that it is the last in the current format of the C’ship.Next year it will be played on a group basis, and whether that will impact on the appeal of the competition remains to be seen.Personally I am not a fan of the new format, it could very well be that we could end up with a number of meaningless games in the groups, however that is what the clubs voted for, but it will be interesting to see how it pans out.It is also fair to say that the C’ship has failed to ignite this year, the structure built around the Inter-County season made it difficult for the competition to gather momentum and good games have been far and few between.

A couple do stand out, Newtownsahndrum’s win over Blackrock and Glen’s dramatic 1 point extra-time win over Charleville. It must be said that the North Cork side, last year’s Premier Intermediate Champions and Munster Champions must be considered the unluckiest team in the competition that despite their heroics under the points system devised they find themselves out of the main C’ship after just 1 season, seems a bit unfair. The Cork County Hurling C’ship has a long and fabled history a look at the record books will tell us that. The big 3 in the city, Glen, Barr’s and Blackrock have made wonderful contributions, but so to have several other clubs, among them, Midleton, Sars, Newtownshandrum, Erin’s Own, Na Piarsaigh, Carrigtwohill and many more including UCC all of whom have carved their name of the base of the Sean Og Murphy Cup.The Final usually attracts many from outside the county such is its appeal, dubbed the ‘Little All-Ireland’ it more often than not lives up to that billing, hopefully it will continue to do so, as County Hurling Final day on Leeside is and always will be special.Imokilly are, and rightly so are favourites, but Glen in a final are imbued with a tradition that is unmatched in club hurling.Quality players on both sides, Bill Cooper, Seamus Harnedy and Paudie O’Sullivan for Imokilly, Patrick Horgan, Brian Moylan and Stephen Mc Donnell for Glen Rovers, which should make for an intriguing encounter.Let’s hope it’s a game in keeping with the wonderful tradition of the C’ship. So who will win, well in my opinion, the famed Cup will head to ................Best of luck to both sides. An Ghleann Abu, by the way.

GleN rOvers A Special time for..

To have started the next chapter in our history as County Champions was very special and to have retained they title when we overcame Erin’s Own capped a tremendous two years for our club. In 1934 the year the GAA celebrated its Golden Jubilee we won our first Cork County senior hurling championship captained by Joe Lee. We went on to retain the title and then record a historic eight in a row a feat unequalled to this day in Cork and as the words of our famous club song goes “Where we have medals by the score won eight counties in a row and here to the boys of sweet Blackpool.” We are privileged to have had some of the greatest hurlers wear our colours Paddy “Fox” Collins, Din Joe Buckley, his brother “Sonny” who was the only man to play in all eight finals, Josie Hartnett, Jack Lynch and Paddy O’Donovan, Seanie Kennefick to name a few, while

Christy Ring is immortalised in song and story and he was without question the greatest ever to have worn the jersey. We became the first and only club to win Senior County Hurling title in Pairc Ui Rinn in 2015 and 2016. Today marks our fifth senior final of the decade and our 44th Senior County Final appearance and it comes in an era of new heroes and players now making their mark and writing themselves into our clubs history books. Players such as Graham Callanan who joined an elite group of men to have led Glen Rovers to two senior county championship titles when he led us in 2015 and 2016. Stephen Mc Donnell, Patrick Horgan, Robert Downey, Simon Kennefick are the latest to wear the red and white of Cork as they represented our club with great distinction on the inter- county stage.

We take huge pride in our jersey the green, black and gold stripes are worn by the men and women, boys and girls of our club with a pride we instil in every boy and girl privileged to take to the field representing Glen Rovers. Originally the stripes on our jersey were green, white and gold but the white hoop was replaced by a black one to honour the fallen heroes and heroines of 1916 the year of our founding.Best wishes to our team and mentors who represent our club Glen Rovers this afternoon we know they will do so with honour and distinction. It would be remiss of me not to mention Eoghan Cronin who immigrated to Dubai recently. Eoghan played no small part in preparing our team in the earlier rounds of the championship for which we were most grateful. We wish Eoghan

and Stephanie the very best in their new life in Dubai. We also thank our superb sponsors Blackwater Motors and our club supporter Sports Direct and all of our members and supporters who are with us on our journey. Our captain Brian Moylan carries o a rich family tradition today as he leads his clubout today, He is the grandson of the legendary Glen Rovers hurler Dan “Copper” Moylan who gave outstanding service to both Glen Rovers and St Nicks, whilst his granmother Essie was also a legendary camogie player with the club and his brother Gavin is a member of the squad also today. Fanaithe An Ghleanna Abu. Mary Newman PRO, Glen Rovers Hurling Club

2016 marked a special year for Glen Rovers as we celebrated one hundred years since the foundation of our club.

Going all out for the 3 in a row

The panel has members from clubs who are not ranked as senior clubs and this gives these players the chance to play at the top level of Cork hurling where they can represent their club and division. Currently, we have players from the following clubs; Aghada, Castlelyons, Castlemartyr, Cloyne, Cobh,

Dungourney, Fr O Neills, Lisgoold, St Catherines, St Itas, Watergrasshill, and Youghal, along with our selectors and backroom staff from Aghada, Cobh, Castlermartyr, Lisgoold, Castlelyons, and

St Itas.

Speaking with players and the mentors, one of the main driving forces behind everything they have done so far is the continued support they receive from supporters, both young and old alike, from all the different clubs in the Imokilly Division. These supporters get to see their own club players playing against the top teams in Cork. For some of the players, this is what makes playing for Imokilly so special, being able to represent your club against the

A week later saw them back in Pairc ui Rinn on Tuesday 02 April for the Second Round where they overcame Carbery on a scoreline of Imokilly 0-24 to 0-10 for Carbery.

Imokilly had a break until Sunday 1st September where they played Midleton in an East Cork derby in Carrigtwohill with Imokilly coming out on top on a score of Imokilly 0-34 to 4-16 for Midleton

On Saturday 21st September we were at the County Quarter Final stage where Imokilly overcame Sarsfields on a score of 1-17 vs 0-10 in Páirc Uí Rinn

Two weeks later Imokilly returned to Pairc Ui Rinn for the County semi-final, which saw Imokilly take on St Finbarrs and coming out on top on a score of Imokilly 3-19 to 1-19 for St Finbarrs

Imokilly had reached their third County final in a row where they face tough opposition in Glen Rovers today.

PROUD TO BE OFFICIAL HYDRATION PARTNERS OF

CORK GAAA few words with ....

sT micHAel’sShane O’Keeffe

AS a dual player Shane has been around St Michael’s and Blackrock since he was about five years of age.

Shane says he started out in the street leagues at U6 level, and bar one year, the 26-year-old has been playing with both clubs ever since.

One of the early influences on his football career was Connie O’Leary who was involved in many aspects of the club over the years and was one of his first coaches in the street leagues.

The dual star has his fair share of medals at hurling, two minor and two U21 county titles, as well as two senior leagues titles, sadly football medals are a bit shorter in supply.

However he does have two moments that he fondly remembers on the football pitch – winning the Corn Uí Mhuiri with Chriost Rí in 2010 and a Junior B city division medal from last year.

Shane currently works at Waterford General Hospital where he is an anesthetist.

His busy work schedule sees him doing at least one 24-hour shift a week as well as being on call other evenings and weekends when not on duty.

He interned at the Mercy Hospital and after qualifying headed to Australia for a year to gain some experience before returning home to work.

His schedule means he doesn’t get to train as often as he would like, but he makes a point of making it down at least once a week.

He says it is a great way of relieving stress to get out on the pitch and have a bit of banter with the lads. Considering his workload it’s no mean feat to get to training even once a week, as it’s roughly a four-hour round trip and to help keep him in top condition he has taken up yoga in recent times to keep fit and help with injury prevention.

Although Shane says he is not very superstitious he does have one. Shane will never go to watch a game in the championship he is playing in, be it the PIFC with St Michael’s or SHC with the Rockies.

Shane says that he would only be thinking about who will be marking him so never goes to see any side they will be facing.

He may work as an anesthetist who whatever defender is marking him today better not be asleep!

WHILST Lorcan will be known up and down the country as a Cork hurler and his exploits with them, like all players it's with the club he started and will finish.

The Kanturk dual star has played for more then 22 years in their colours, starting out at U10 level, when he was a few years younger than that.

It didn't take long for Lorcan to start collecting his vast array of medals and titles as he recalls they won the Brian Cronin U10 competition.

From U10 up Lorcan has had plenty of coaches and he is thankful to them all for the part they played in making him the club dual star he now is. He also made mention of Tom O'Connell who was one of his coaches at Colaiste Treasa, another he has great respect for.

One of his earliest memories is a county U12 hurling championship title win over Valley Rovers and even now he still recalls the game fondly.

Lorcan said it was a very close game and there was only a point or so in it at the final whistle and puts it down as one of the games he will never forget.

At underage, and still to this day, Lorcan says he has been lucky enough to play with the likes of Aidan Walsh and they won U14, U16, minor and U21 championships.

Can you imagine as an U14 player having to start six or eight points down, well that's what they had to do in the Duhallow division as a form of a handicap such was there determination and prowess at the time.

2009 was a big year for Lorcan and the club as they won the Duhallow championship for the first time in more than 40 years and move on a few years to 2011 when they won the county championship.

Lorcan says 2013 is a year he will never forget with the club winning the intermediate football championship and the premier intermediate hurling championship, no mean feat considering

the amount of dual players they have.

He also won the intermediate All-Ireland hurling title, beating Kilkenny club side, St pat's Ballyraggett, in the final, a game he scored 0-7 in.

With Cork he won an All-Ireland U21 football medal in 2009 and with the senior hurlers he won the Munster championship in 2014, 17 and 18.

Away from GAA he likes to try and play a bit of golf, badly he says, but with two young children that's easier said than done.

He is grateful to his parents, Sean and Mairead, for all their support over the years and also to his partner, Karen, whom he said has made lots of sacrifices so he can play.

He has two young children, Caoimhe aged six and Ryan, aged 18 months, which keep him busy when he's not working or playing GAA.

Lorcan works in sales with the Ayrton Group, which are health and safety specialists and no doubt he will hope to sell the Michael's defence a few dummies today to pop the ball over the bar!

Rebel Óg coaching activities are overseen by Games Manager Kevin O’Callaghan and Ronan Dwane as Coaching Officer. The newly appointed GPO in Carbery, Paudie Crowley, now brings the full time coaching to staff to 10 (1 Games Manager, 6 GDA’s, 1 GPO and 2 Third Level Officers) and there are also six part time coaches working at grassroots level. The recent appointments of Conor Counihan as Football Project Coordinator, Aidan

O’Connell as High Performance Manager and former GDA Shane Supple as Junior Administrator to align the underage fixture programme are key moves that will improve structures even further. The main aims of Rebel Óg Coaching are to increase participation while optimising playing standards. When one casts an eye over participation figures, there are some interesting changes in the last 10 years.

While the statistics over show serious progress, the real impact of investment in full time coaches is seen through workshops with club coaches and teachers in schools and the coaching best practice messages that help volunteers improve the effectiveness of their own sessions and produce better players. County Coaching Officer Ronan Dwane feels “the work going on in Cork GAA at all levels is massive and there is great credit due to the volunteers throughout the county who are working to develop the game in their communities.” He also notes that the change to the u 14 regional football development squad

programme at u14 level in 2019 which doubled the number of boys being involved (4 teams to 8 teams) as a major step in the right direction for Cork as more boys will be exposed to playing at a higher level which will improve the standard of club and county players. This trend will continue for 2020 with Cork fielding 4 Regional teams at U15 level in both codes rather than the 2 teams fielded in previous years. If you wish to find out more about the work of Rebel Óg Coaching please log on to their excellent website www.rebelogcoaching.com
