WINTER/SPRING

2016

144 S. BROADWAY

Page 2: City of Turlock Winter Spring 2016 Guide

My name is Gary Soiseth and I was elected to serve as your Mayor. Turlock is a great City and it has been an honor to work for you throughout the past year. Our City is facing a lot of challenges: we are in the fourth year of a drought, we have neglected roads that need to be fixed, and we need more police officers and firefighters. On top of all of this, our City Council is trying to balance the budget within one year!

Like many people that run for public office, these are the issues that I talked about while I walked door-to-door during the campaign. We still need to focus on these large issues facing our City, but there’s also room for us to focus on an equally pressing question: how do we create a stronger, closer, and kinder community? To answer this question, I’m challenging every citizen of every age to meet a goal of a “Million Acts of Kindness” here in Turlock!

My inspiration for this new campaign did not start in our City; it started halfway across the globe. While I was born and raised here in Turlock, I also spent four years in small villages throughout Afghanistan serving some of the poorest members of our world community. While I didn’t speak Pashto or Dari, I was able to demonstrate through actions a message of compassion, hope, and—most importantly—a message of kindness.

Acts of kindness come in all forms and many efforts are already underway: from the annual “Love Turlock” effort by our churches to help those in need, to the “Random Acts of Kindness” effort by Turlock’s Firefighters, to the daily efforts of many non-profits like the Salvation Army, Jessica’s House, Westside Ministries, We Care, and Turlock Gospel Mission. The Make-A-Wish foundation was also in Turlock this past November, granting a little boy who is battling Leukemia with a train-themed room that he has been dreaming about and making him “Mayor for a Day.”

Acts of kindness also include simple gestures of inclusion and acceptance, like inviting a new student to sit with you at lunch, or visiting with a lonely neighbor, or befriending a fellow classmate that might appear different.

This spring, I will be teaming up with many of these ministries and groups to further this campaign of making our City a kinder, stronger, more welcoming community. This campaign will start with the City of Turlock’s Afterschool Program, where I will work with Turlock’s youngest citizens to define what it means to be a “City of Kindness.”

Turlock is a giving community that doesn’t need to be instructed to “be kind.” However, we can always increase our efforts in making our City a kinder, stronger, and more welcoming community.

My message above is focused on Turlock’s youngest citizens, so if you are a parent or relative of a young person in Turlock, please share this article with them and discuss what it means to be a kind citizen. Together, we will meet this challenge of a million acts of kindness over the coming years!

Gary Soiseth
