Redesigned Website Coming Soon When the Rains Begin and the Ants Come Marching In

Have you ever woken up to find ants have invaded your kitchen? Studies show people in the West Valley have trouble with ants when the rainy season begins. When this happens, people often end up using strong pesticides.

Although some of the stronger pesticides have been banned, now the substitute pesticides are showing up in waterways at levels that can harm aquatic life. The good news is that there are ways to control ants without using these toxic chemicals.

The most common ant in West Valley is the Argentine ant. They are small (1/8 inch) and are drawn to sweet foods, especially sugar (sucrose). Here's a quick and safe fix for your next ant emergency:

1. Find what ants are after (usually food) and where they’re getting into the house.

2. Before removing food that’s attracting the ants, clean up lines of ants with soapy water, vinegar or cleaning spray. Wipe the area well to destroy the ‘scent trails’ that ants leave for their nest-mates to follow.

3. Block their entry point temporarily with a smear of petroleum jelly or piece of tape. Use silicon caulk to permanently close entry points.

4. Place a bait station along the ant trail. Remove the bait station when the ants have disappeared, so you don't attract more ants into the house.

For additional information on this topic, please visit www.mywatershedwatch.org.

If you’re a user of the City’s website, good news is just around the corner. The City is in the final phase of finishing a redesigned website which is expected to be completed this winter. The redesign includes new functionality that will make it easier for the public to navigate the site and locate desired information. The new website wi l l be the “hub” of City of Campbell’s new integrated e-government efforts and will link information on the website to a new City Facebook Page as well as Twitter account.

Navigat ion has been simplified by utilizing a drop down “mega-menu” that wil l allow visitors to quick ly locate the information and services they need. Additionally, a new section, “I Want to…?” offers simple and straightforward instructions on how to obtain a variety of City services. Another new feature, “Noti fy Me” wi l l al low individuals to sign up to receive alerts about public meetings, special events, job opportunities and numerous other City activities. How to Winterize Your HouseBuilding Official Bill Bruckart suggests some routine tasks homeowners should undertake at this time of year as we all prepare for the colder winter months.

Simple tasks such as having a chimney professionally cleaned prior to the first use of the season, making sure your water pipes are insulated prior to first frost, cleaning out gutters to allow proper drainage of rainwater, ensuring that you have emergency lighting (flashlights and candles with matches) available in case of power outages.

One important task is to change the batteries in home smoke and carbon monoxide detectors twice each year. He cautions that in the event of a power outage, it is important not to utilize gas powered generators within a structure. Doing so presents a huge risk of asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Other suggestions include stacking firewood off the ground to help eliminate drawing rodents from moving in for the season. It’s always good to evaluate your first aid kits and make sure you have an emergency supply of food and water to help your family survive for several days if it ever becomes necessary in an emergency. Stay safe and be prepared.

Sign-up for Emergency Notification

CodeRED® and AlertSCC

The City of Campbell uses a Community Emergency Notification System called CodeRED®. This system is used to notify Campbell residents by telephone of important information in the event of emergencies within the Campbell city limits. Some examples of these types of emergency notifications are earthquakes, fires, situations involving hazardous materials, hostage situations, barricaded subjects, etc.

Additionally, the City of Campbell has joined thirteen other Public Safety Agencies in Santa Clara County in implementing a regional mass notification system called AlertSCC. AlertSCC is used to provide critical information to residents of Santa Clara County in the event of an emergency. The AlertSCC system can also be used for priority messages that do not rise to the level of emergency notifications and Community Outreach messages. Participation in the County regional mass notification system is helpful in the event of incidents involving multiple jurisdictions or incidents that occur near a shared border with another City.

Campbell recommends that residents register with both systems. Additional information on both systems is available at:

h t t p : / / w w w.c i t yo f c a mp b e l l .c om / Po l i c e /CommunityNotificationSystem.htm

Register your phone number to receive notification of an emergency in your area.

It’s easy! To register, visit the City’s website at CityofCampbell.com and click on the Emergency Preparedness link.

The City uses the CodeRED® system to send emergency notifications to Campbell residents in the event of emergencies that occur within the City limits.

For more information on how the CodeRED® system works, you can visit the CodeRED®website at www.coderedweb.com.

What is a Community Development Department?

Campbell’s Community Development Department consists of the Planning, Building, and Code Enforcement Divisions.

Planning staff reviews proposed development and or new businesses for compliance with the City’s zoning and land use regulations.

Building staff issues construction permits and inspects construction at specific intervals to ensure that the current building code standards are being met by job contractors.

Code Enforcement is charged with seeking compliance with the regulations of the City of Campbell for issues such as signs, graffiti, improper site uses and substandard housing conditions.

Specific questions can be referred to [email protected].

Website (Continued from Page 1)

Search has also been enhanced using “key word” functionality and will display results by category, pages, documents and forms.

According to City Manager, Mark Linder, “making these enhancements reflects Campbell’s long-standing commitment to provide outstanding public services, information availability, and responsiveness. This is in alignment with our Council’s priorities, and I am excited that these enhancements are available to the community”Many of these new and enhanced features are currently available; however, additional new functions and applications are being developed and will be released in the near future.

The website redesign culminates six months of effort by City staff and members of the City Council.

Property Owner Graffiti Prevention Training

Code Enforcement staff is developing a training program geared toward property and business owners of sites often tagged by graffiti. The first session will be set for early 2014. One specific target area includes the industrial buildings along McGlincy Lane backing onto Highway 17. These large walls draw routine tagging and oversized graffiti that often must be covered.

Techniques will be suggested to prevent site access in order to reduce opportunity for graffiti. Suggested barriers to graffiti could include guard dogs, site security services or guards, and fencing including, if necessary, barbed wire fencing to keep trespassers off the property after hours. The Campbell Police Department will provide related expertise to develop this graffiti abatement and prevention session. If you are interested in being informed of this training opportunity, e-mail your contact information to [email protected].

How to Search for Affordable Living UnitsBMR stands for “below-market rate” housing units. These units have been established as “affordable” units with rents that fall below the market norms. There are also BMR homes sold to qualified lower-income home buyers. To search for BMR units located within Santa Clara County, there are two websites available www.scchousingsearch.com or www.charitieshousing.org/availablehousing.htm.

There’s one new development underway in Campbell that will include some BMR units for both purchase and rent. The site is at Hamilton Avenue & San Tomas Expressway and is in the early stages of construction at this time. Interested parties can contact the following person for qualifying information both for purchase and rental BMR units: Leslie Harvey, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Consultants, (925) 460-2821, [email protected]. An apartment project at 1677 S. Bascom Avenue is in the early stages of development and will also have BMR units available. Information will be made available once a contact person for the project is established.

If you are seeking a BMR unit, check back periodically via e-mail to see if any new developments with below-market units have become available at [email protected].

Be part of the “Parks Make Life Better” movement! You may have noticed staffmembers from the Recreation and Community Services Department wearing “Parks Make Life Better” t-shirts and sweatshirts around town. It’s a way to acknowledge the importance of Parks and Recreation programs in our lives. Parks and Recreation programs give us safe, clean places to gather with friends; unstructured play for our kids; exercise and recreation classes to nourish our minds; and social connections that improve our lives.

Coming up, there are many events sponsored by the Recreation and Community Services Department that will make your life better! Enjoy the holiday decorations at the historic Ainsley House through December 19th; take part in the Valentine Fun Run scheduled for February 8th in Campbell Park; and be sure to register for a fitness class to give your new year a healthy start!

I personally invite you to join me at the 10th Anniversary of the Heritage Theatre on Saturday, March 1st with a sensational performance by “Under the Streetlamp”. You will enjoy retro songs from the ‘60s performed by the recent cast members of Jersey Boys. A pre-show gala will be held at Orchard City Banquet Hall and tickets for both events are limited. Don’t wait--it will be a night not to be missed. This type of cultural event provides social connections, memories and the opportunity to celebrate the preservation of a historic Campbell landmark.

Lastly, help spread the message of why “Parks Make Life Better” here in the City of Campbell by purchasing a “Parks Make Life Better” sweatshirt. Order forms are available at the Community Center Office.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and peaceful New Year!

Kind regards,

Regina MaurantonioDirector, Recreation & Community Services

muSIC TOGETHER (NEWBORN-6 yRS)This is the essential Music Together class, one that a child can attend from birth through age six – and through all nine song collections (rotated over three years). This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers – grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers may bring children with no limit to the number of adults who attend with each child. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience. A $50 lab fee per family is due the first day of class. Monday classes held in E-44, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday classes held in E-42.
