When the crowd joins in the songsMarsha and Ron will be two of many voices, and themusic will become even more joyous as everyone getsinto the spirit of the season!

    REVIEWOFTHEBOOKGERUSALEMMESENZADIO.RITRATTODIUNACITTCRUDELE

    (JERUSALEMWITHOUTGOD. PORTRAITOFA CRUEL TOWN) BYPAOLACARID

In spite of its legend, quiet sunsets and enchanting dawns, Jerusalem is notthe town three times holy. The author, Paola Caridi, tells us about a townlived intimately. Jerusalem, the Holy City, is a memorable place for the beautyof the ancient walls and its whitewashed stones, but it is also a city whereIsraelis and Palestinians are shopping in the same supermarket and then shutthemselves up in their living quarters, separate and invisible to each other. The current profile of this ambivalent Middle Eastern city in the ThirdMillennium, suspended between goodness and curse, love and fear, and thatlooks like an island fortress, has been traced in the new book (published byFeltrinelli, 202 pages, 16) by journalist Paola Caridi, written and presentedin Palermo during a meeting with the anthropologist Franco La Cecla.

The author, who lived for 10 years in Jerusalem and today lives in Sicily, inSambuca di Sicilia, does not dwell on the Arab-Israeli conflict, but takesa review of the anthropological composition of this town. I thought itwas important to talk of the town, explains the author, and not about theconflict. It is precisely by observing the city that, in fact, one can see all theelements of the conflict and, paradoxically, also the possibility of a solution.By deconstructing the city you can begin to understand what you can do.

Today, notes Ms. Caridi, Jerusalem is a city still unfinished where, forexample, a shared square where all ethnic groups can meet does not exist. It

is a place where there is a rigid division in districts by religion and ethnicity. These divisions were created following the presence of British colonialauthority. For 10 years I have been thinking that Jerusalem should bedivided according to the Oslo negotiations with a two-state solution and adivided Jerusalem as the capital of Israelis and Palestinians. Today I am nolonger convinced of it. Neither the internationalization of the Holy sitescan be the solution. The Old City, concludes the author of the book, is anintertwinement difficult to manage. Jerusalem is a complex set of borders andcontaminated relations of power that cannot be unraveled but only sharedas it is. A shared square cannot exist without the resolution of the mostimportant knot, which is the mutual recognition of Israelis and Palestinians.

ITWASAVERDICELEBRATION!The talented singers from Opera On Tap~North Texas joined us at theICD Clubhouse for Cena on Octobrt 19 as we celebrated the 200thbirthday of Italys great composer, Giuseppe Verdi. Taking center stagein the Dining Room, the eight singers kicked off the first set with arousing rendition of Libiamo Ne Lieti Calici from La Traviata. Thearias name translates to Lets Drink from the Joyful Cup ~ and glasseswere raised, song filled the room, and during dinner the laughter andconversation of ICD Members and guests kept the mood, indeed, joyful!

Arias from Don Carlo, Falstaff, and Otello also filled the score for theevening. While it is almost impossible to name a best from the Verdirepertoire, Opera On Tap saved two of the most popular numbers forthe end ~ La Dona e Mobile from Rigoletto and the emotional Va,Pensiero, the famous chorus from Nabucco. ICD Members weresinging along to these iconic arias!

In Libiamo, the chorus urges the crowd: Godiamo, la tazza, la tazzae il cantico, la note abbella e il riso ~ Let us enjoy the wine and thesinging, the beautiful night, and the laughter. We certainly took theiradvice at the ICDs Verdi celebration!
