    FERRAGOSTO

What is Ferragosto? In the simplest terms,Ferragosto is a holiday that takes place on 15th ofAugust every year in Italy. It is, in fact, probably themost popular holiday in Italy other than Christmasday. Ferragosto coincides with Assumption Day, theprincipal feast of the Virgin Mary, commemoratingthe day of the assumption of her body into heaven. It also stems from the ancient harvest festivals FeriaeAugusti (Festivals of Augustus), from which its nameFerragosto is derived. During these celebrations, horse races were organized across the Roman Empire

and this tradition remains alive today with the Palioof Sienna, Indeed the name Palio comes from thepallium, a piece of cloth that was the prize given towinners of the horse races in ancient Rome.

Marking the end of hard labor in the fields,Ferragosto was celebrated with the best of food, wineand music. We wont be racing horses, but we willbe celebrating summer with a Hawaiian shirt conteston Friday, August 15th, at Cena. A prize will beawarded to the best and / or craziest Hawaiian shirt. You can make your reservation here on line, or callthe Club at (972) 931-9167.

    PRESIDENTSLETTER

    Dear Members,

With the summertime slowness, the Club is experiencing a severe cashflow problem and it needs your immediate help.

We need to pass the hat to help us bridge the current shortages andsustain the Club.

We have enjoyed beautiful dinners with our Guest Chef program andother activities are planned to generate proceeds. We continue to focuson expansion of rental revenue, additional fundraising, cost reduction and

various partnerships to lower our breakeven point. These efforts will notshow immediate results and solve our immediate problem - lack of funds.

We need time and additional funding to allow these actions to takeeffect.

Therefore, we are asking for donations, all of which are tax-deductible.

We are asking each member to donate a minimum of $100.00. Ofcourse, additional amounts would be helpful. This injection of cashwould give us time to effect the actions listed above. You can forwardyour donations to the Clubs address or by clicking here, to make adonation on-line.

Time is our enemy and we need you to respond immediately....we needyour help now.

Our congratulations and warmest best wishes go to Pedro and GinaLecca on celebrating their fifty-first wedding anniversary last July 6. Wewil l have to ask Pedro and Gina to divulge the secret to a long and happymarriage.

Kudos to Bianca Lucia, daughter of Al Tamez and Marguerite Buccino, upon her graduation from Chicago University on June 14 with a BAin biology and general honors. After completing an internship at anaddiction treatment outpatient facility she will be seeking employment

in Texas. Bianca was the recipient of a small, but most appreciated, scholarship from NIAF.

    DIDYOUKNOW?

that Elena Lucrezia Cornaro, born in Venice in 1646, was the firstwoman in history to be awarded a university degree? Although herstudies were in theology, the degree conferred upon her by the Universityof Padua in 1668 was in philosophy. The cardinal bishop of Padua, whose consent was required for any degree to be conferred in theology, refused to allow the university to confer one upon a woman sayingthat women were inferior and not capable of deep reflection and HolyScripture justified his decision. Nonetheless over thirt y thousand peopleattended the ceremony in the Cathedral in Padua awarding her the

degree in philosophy.that contrary to urban legend Enrico Caruso did not have 16 brothers(none of whom survived infancy) and three sisters? He actually was thethird of seven children and one of only three to survive infancy. Also, prior to marrying New York socialite Dorothy Park Benjamin in 1918who bore him a daughter, Caruso was romantical ly involved with Italiansoprano Ada Giachetti from 1897 to 1908 who, though already married, bore Caruso four sons.

that if you want a kiss from a sweet young thing in Valle dAosta youask her for a potin? And if she is Sicilian its a vasata that you wouldcrave. And of course in non-dialectic Italian its bacio.

    A SOUTHERNITALIANBEAUTY: THETOWNOFBARI

I think Bari is one of the most beautifulcities of Apulia. Its citizens are so aware ofit that they have a common say: if Milanhad the sea it would be a little Bari

Its a medium-sized city with about350,000 inhabitants and offers manyinteresting things to see.

First of all, there is the old city, with its

maze of narrow streets, ancient churches, palaces and very beautiful monumentslike the Norman-Swabian castle, theCathedral and the Basilica of SaintNicholas, both in Romanesque style,of extraordinarily simple beauty and adazzling white color. The atmospherein the old town is very special: the mazeof narrow streets is still virtually intactfrom the Middle Ages to the present dayand, combined with the smell of the sea,it seems you are able to relive that periodof history walking through the alleys andsmall squares.

Outside the old town is the so-calledMurat village, founded in the early 19thcentury and adorned with beautifulbuildings in the Art Nouveau style at thebeginning of the 20th century. Here youwil l find the main shopping streets and itis nice to take a walk among wide roadsfilled with shops. The waterfront is ofextraordinary beauty thanks to the v iewit offers of the old town. A little on theoutskirts, near the Polytechnic is also theRussian church in Bari, a strange buildingthat gives an oriental touch to the city.

Besides the monuments, Bari is famous forits gastronomy: a part of the most famousdishes, it is worth tasting some typicalproducts that are eaten as a snack cake likefocaccia barese (a local type of pizza) andthe panzerotti (sort of a calzone) which are real delights!

Getting to Bari is very simple, as there is an airport connected with manyItalian and European cities with low cost flights and the railway station, where trains stop rather frequently like the Frecciabianca (white arrow)that connects Milan to Lecce, another town south of Bari.

The best time to vis it Bari is in the spr ing, before it gets too hot. However, summer is better if you want to enjoy the nightlife along thecoastline and to take advantage of the beaches during the day.

Bari is a city where you can find all the conveniences of a city and thetranquility of the sea and it takes a whole day to visit and enjoy it. Ifyou also want to check the beautiful surroundings you must provideadditional days because ther are many beautiful places nearby. One ofthem is Polignano a Mare, a fabulous place and the city of DomenicoModugno, the singer of Volare! It is a place by the blue sea contrastedby white rocks that will leave you enchanted.

Take a trip to Bari and Polignano: you wi ll love it!Enio Elisei
