Diocese of Rockville Centre Announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catholic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initiative is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parishioners. We value your input, so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org for more information, and email [email protected] to give feedback or find out more ways to get involved.

Parish Ministry Spotlight

LectorsHoly Spirit’s Lectors welcome the congregation and share any special announcements before Eucharistic celebrations, then proclaim the Word of God during Mass by reading the first and second readings. During the Prayer of the Faithful or General Intercessions, the lectors present the petitions and Mass intentions.

The lectors are lay individuals in our parish that receive some training and assist with readings at Holy Spirit’s weekday and weekend Masses.

Loretta Kusk, Anna Rosamilia and Phyllis Thomas coordinate the weekday schedule, and Jim McCabe prepares the weekend schedule for the lectors. We are grateful to those responsible for coordinating the schedule, as well as all the lectors who volunteer their time by participating in this ministry.

Any lay person interested in learning more about becoming a lector should contact Father Grieco by e-mail at [email protected], or Jim McCabe at 516-358-5082.

- Jim McCabe, Weekend Lector Coordinator

If your child is 11 years of age or older, and interested in serving as a lector at our Family Mass on Sundays at 9:30 AM, please email Fran Wisnewski at  [email protected].

AND THE WINNERS ARE:

The three winners of the Respect Life essay contest will be announced, and the gift card prizes will be awarded at the

FAMILY MASS, 9:30 AM, JANUARY 26, 2020.If you wrote an essay, make sure to attend the Family Mass to find out if you won.

Thank you to all the students who took time from their regular schoolwork, sports, and after school activities to research and write an essay on the sacredness of all

human life, from conception to natural death.

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE Coordinator: Florence ScarinciMARCH FOR LIFE

It has been 47 years since the Roe v. Wade decision made abortion legal. Every year near the anniversary of that momentous decision tens of thousands of people, young and old, travel to Washington D.C. to protest, to lobby, and to try to change hearts and minds.

This year the March for Life will take place on Friday, January 24, 2020 in Washington D.C. If you are able to attend, there will be a bus leaving from Our Lady of Victory church in Floral Park at 5 a.m. The cost of the bus is $25.00. The cost is the same for families as well as individuals.  If you wish to attend, please email Florence Scarinci at [email protected] and she will see that your reservation is made.

Most of us, however, will not be able to attend the March. If you cannot attend, but wish to be in solidarity with the marchers, please join the Respect Life Committee members in Holy Spirit church at 1 p.m. for a holy hour on January 24. In addition to silent pray and meditation, we will be reciting the Rosary, the Litany of the Blessed Mother, and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, asking that the efforts of marchers will bear fruit and the attitude that life is sacred from conception to natural death will prevail.

Sunday, January 19, 2020 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time(Lec. 64) 1) Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 2) 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 3) John 1:29-34

FOCUS: By virtue of our baptism, we have been called to be servants for the Father’s mission. As followers of Jesus, we are duty-bound to bring the good news of salvation to a world very much in need of saving. As disciples of the one true God, we must find our voice and speak his holy truth even when it may be inconvenient or unwanted.

LITURGY OF THE WORDIn the first reading, God reminds Isaiah that Israel is the Lord’s servant. Paul greets the Church of Corinth, announcing he has been called to be an Apostle. In the Gospel, John announces Jesus as the Lamb of God.
