A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 27, 2019 “The Lord is a God of justice, who knows no favorites. Though not unduly partial to the weak, yet he hears the cry of the oppressed. The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint. The one who serves God willingly is heard, his petition reaches the heavens…. Oh God, be merciful to me a sinner.” The parable of Jesus provides a clear and poignant teach-ing. We can identify only with one of the two persons. The writer from the Jewish scriptures provides us with the op-pressed or the one who serves God willingly. I too can identify as one of them. If God hears the cry of the poor, can I as a willing servant hear and listen to their voice? Christians throughout the world are suffering great hardship, precisely because of their faith. Do I respond to their need? I may not know them, their language, or culture, but they are victims of oppression and neglect. From earliest times the bible re-sponds to the widows and orphans. Those detained at our border are sufferers and seekers of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Can I see them as us? Pope Francis stated that God’s last name is ‘Mercy’. Does the word of God today call me to compas-sion and action?

A Message on Marriage from The Catholic Bishops of New Jersey

What is the Catholic Church’s Teaching on Marriage?

The Catholic Church teaches today and has always and everywhere taught for 2000 years that marriage is the union of one man and one woman as husband and wife. “Marriage is not just any relationship between human beings. It was established by the Creator with its own nature, essential properties and pur-pose. No ideology can erase from the human spirit the certainty that marriage exists solely between a man and a woman, who by mutual personal gift, proper and exclusive to themselves, tend toward the communion of their persons. In this way, they mutu-ally perfect each other, in order to cooperate with God in the procreation and upbringing of new human lives.” (Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, June 3, 2003) This great truth about marriage is not some obscure doctrinal fine point but a fact of human na-ture, recognized from time immemorial by people of virtually every faith and culture. God made us male and female; only men and women cooperating in marital love together can truly become one flesh, and only marital unions further God’s purpose of cre-ating new life that is welcomed, loved, nurtured and educated by their mother and father. The church teaches that man and woman are equal. However, man and woman are different from each other but created for each other. This com-plementarity, including sexual differences, draws them together in a mutually loving union that always should be open to the procreation of children (see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos. 1602-1605)

News from the Academy of Saint James of the Marches Weekend of October 26/27, 2019

Many new things are happening at the Academy of St. James. The students have adjusted to school life and are settled in for the year! The “Grandfriends” had the Totowa Fire Dept. stop by last week and gave the 3rd graders a rare treat to check out the fire truck! The 8th graders are prepping for the High School test which is given Nov. 8th. The Kindergarteners presented a Fall Assembly full of music and dancing for the entire school this past Thursday. Student Council officers were elected for the upcoming school year: Gabriel Gachette was chosen to be President. Linda Weil – Vice President, Alyssia Dilone – Secretary and Ruby Penney was selected to be Treasurer! All students in grades 4-8 were able to vote for the officers after they gave a speech. It is an excellent opportunity for children to get comfortable with public speaking. Fourteen children ran for positions and we were so proud of all of them. We were sad to say goodbye this past week to Mr. Andrew Rohloff who is pursuing a career change in Florida. He has been the Science teacher for the past 2.5 years. The school community sends him best wishes for the future. Anyone who would be interested in teaching at St. James, please contact the school office at 973-956-8824. If you know someone just out of college who could be thinking about teaching – let us know. Our Family Halloween Happening was this past Friday and a fantastic time was had by all. The Halloween Parade will be Oct 31st at 1:45 at the school. Please join us, it is really enjoyable to watch the little children all “dressed up” parade around. Don’t miss it!
