PAGE 2 PRAYER & WORSHIP

FROM THE DESK OF OUR PASTOR

Jesus came not to abolish the Old Testament law but to fulfill it. In this weekend’s Gospel, He reveals that love—of God and of neighbor—is the fulfillment of the whole of the law and the prophets. The Israelites if they were faithful, were to keep all 613 commands found in the Bible’s first five books of the Old Testament – “The Pentateuch. Jesus says today that all these laws, and all the teachings of the prophets, can be summarized by our love of God and our neighbor. This summarizes the two stone tablets on which God was said to have engraved the Ten Command-ments. The first tablet set out three laws concerning the love of God, The second contained seven commands regarding love of neighbor. Love is the hinge that binds the two tablets of the law. For we can’t love God, whom we can’t see, if we don’t love our neighbor, whom we can. This love we are called to is far more than simple affection or warm sentiment. We must give ourselves totally to God—loving with our whole being, with all our heart, soul, and mind. Our love for our neighbor must express itself in concrete actions, such as those set out in today ’s First Reading. We love because He first loved us. As we sing in today’s Psalm, He has been our hope, our strength when we could not possibly defend ourselves against the enemies of sin and death. We love in thanksgiving for our salvation. And in this become imitators of Jesus, as Saint Paul tells us in today’s Epistle—laying down our lives daily in ways large and small, seen and unseen; our lives offered as a continual sacrifice of praise.

FINANCIAL REPORTS CAR SHOW & FIRST DRIVE-THRU SPAGHETTI DINNER

With what has turned out to be a very challenging year with COVID-19, we were very blessed to be able to finally enjoy our 9th Annual Car Show on Sunday, September 27, 2020. We had perfect weather for the day and a total of 180 cars were on our grounds for everyone to see and enjoy. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic restrictions, we were unable to include our annual indoor Spaghetti Dinner with this event, but with a lot of help, and following the CDC guidelines, we were able to have our very first Drive-thru Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, October 11, 2020. On behalf of our fundraising committees, we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and a big “Thank You” to everyone would helped in any way to make both of these events a success. Even though these were one day events, it still takes a lot of hard work to get things set up and cleaned up on the days before and after these fundraisers. We took the health and safety of all patrons and all volunteers very seriously by following all the necessary guidelines and our parish safety plan that was approved by the Diocese. While it is impossible to thank everyone by name who shared all of their “Time”, ‘Talent” and “Treasure”, a special word of thanks goes out to Karen Bennett and Angel Gillott who coordinated these events.

We would especially like to express our gratitude to everyone who brought their classic cars, trucks, and bikes out for all to see. We had a great deal of spectator’s who were having a good time checking them all out. Congratula-tions to all of our winners and we are hoping to see all of you again next year. As you can see by the breakdown below, we had two very profitable events. This would not have been possible without all of your help, so again “THANK YOU”.

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND

RETIRED RELIGIOUS COLLECTION

OCTOBER 31 - NOVEMBER 1, 2020

The collection for Retired Religious and Dioce-san Priests will be conducted in the Diocese of Greens-burg next weekend. Since 1999, this collection has helped support the retired diocesan priests’ fund. Twenty-five percent of the total of this year’s collection will be designated for that purpose, and the remainder of the collection will be passed on to the National Religious Retirement Office for distribution to the various religious communities applying for assis-tance. Today, the majority of women religious in congregations and men in religious orders are past age 60, and a significant number are past age 80. Many institutes do not have the resources to meet the dramatically escalating costs of care for their growing populations of elderly. This collection helps meet that need.

HEROES CORNER

I am excited to share with you the newest Beatified young man in the Universal Church. The step before a person is canonized a saint is when, through intense investigation of the candidate along with evidence of a miracle is confirmed, the candidate is officially beatified, called Blessed Carlo. We can ask for their intersession in our needs. I am excited about our newest blessed because he is not only the most recently acknowledged by his holiness through this elevation but because he has just recently died.

Blessed Carlo Acutis was born on May 3, 1991 and died from leukemia on October 12, 2006. Even though his parents were not especially religious Carlo always had a deep love for God and desired to faithfully serve him. After receiving his first Holy Communion at the age of seven, Carlo would frequently spend a few moments in adoration before the Blessed Tabernacle either before or after Mass. He would go to confession once a week recognizing not only the forgiveness of his sins but the grace he also received in the sacrament keeping him close to God and His Holy Will. Carlo had a great devotion to many of the saints including Saints Francisco and Jacinto Marto, the children of Fatima blessed to see the Marian Apparitions in 1907; Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Bernadette, the visionary from Lourdes, France, Saint Dominic Savio just to name a few. Blessed Carlo is the perfect role model for today’s youth as he lived life to the full in both the natural and spiritual order. He loved being with his friends. He loved playing Super Mario and Pokemon and was drawn to programming internet sites to honor our Blessed Mother and Jesus. One of his websites catalogues all the Eucharistic Miracles throughout the world, he began this undertaking at the age of eleven and completed the site in 2005 at the age of fifteen. He said, “the more Eucharist we receive, the more we will become like Jesus, so that on this earth we will have a foretaste of heaven.” Another website was designed to catalogue all the approved Marian Apparitions. Blessed Carlo understood the value of suffering to build up the Church. After he was diagnosed with leuke-mia, Carlo said, “I offer all the suffering I will have to undergo for the Lord, for the Pope (who was Benedict XVI at that time) and the Church.” Once, when his doctor asked Blessed Carlo if he was in great pain he replied, “there are people who suffer much more than me”. The cause for his canonization was opened almost immediately. He received the title, Servant of God in 2013, this is the first stage on the path to sainthood. Pope Francis confirmed his life to be a life of heroic virtue on July 5, 2018 and declared him Venerable. The miracle that was credited for his Beatification happened in 2019 when the mother of Mattheus Vianna prayed a novena for her son’s defective pancreas which made eating very difficult for Mattheus. The miracle was approved in February 2020. Blessed Carlo Acutis was beatified on October 10, 2020 in Assisi, Italy by Pope Francis. Blessed Carlo Acutis has been dubbed the patron of the internet. Blessed Carlo Acutis pray for us!

Quotes for Blessed Carlo Acutis:

“The Eucharist is my highway to heaven.” “To be always united with Jesus, this is my life program.”

“The Virgin Mary is the only woman in my life.” “Sadness is looking at ourselves, happiness is looking towards God.”

“I am happy to die because I have lived my life without wasting a minute on those things which do not please God.”
