OLM Music Program Announcement

As most parishioners are aware, OLM is in a time of transition in our music program and Fr. Lucas and the Music Committee want to share our plans with the Parish.

Father Lucas has announced that, during the transition, Susan Shepard will serve Our Lady of the Mountains Church as Coordinator of Music. Susan, a parishioner and longtime music program volunteer, was formerly a professional classical and liturgical musician. After earning degrees in music, she spent several years singing in Europe and the US before settling in Los Angeles to raise her family. She then served in several large parishes as a professional cantor/soloist and directed choirs in three different parishes, gaining experience in Catholic liturgical music program management. Susan and her family moved to Jackson Hole in 2002 where she operates an interior design firm.

A New and Exciting Direction for Our Parish: There has been a growing desire in our parish community to bring more uplifting Praise and Worship music to our Masses on a regular basis. Many parishioners have expressed the desire to have Masses at OLM that have a broader appeal to younger people and children. Working toward this goal during the transitional period, we are utilizing most of our existing resources, as well as seeking new faces, voices and instrumentalists to help make this concept a reality. Over the next few months, we will experiment with various ways of structuring our new program, and we encourage and welcome any and all input or ideas our parishioners have as we make our way

Our Overall Goal is to achieve a program of quality that, above all, will enhance, uplift and inspire worship at OLM.

The Future: Susan will serve as Coordinator until June of 2020. At that time, we will evaluate where our program stands and, dependent on the needs and preferences of the parish, we will recruit for an appropriate individual to serve as full-time Director/Minister of Music.

Our initial plan is as follows: 5:30pm Saturday Masses: Praise and Worship

· We are organizing a Contemporary Ensemble comprised of guitars, piano and voices who will sing/play at one or two Masses each month. · We are fortunate to have the talented Tom Holland and his daughter Madeleine, who will sing/play once or twice each month. · We are seeking to bring a second small group to sing/play occasionally.

8:00am Sunday Masses: “Meditative Mass” · The 8:00 Mass will offer “Meditative Mass”, e.g., a quieter Mass with less singing to answer many requests in the parish to offer a more reflective Mass experience

10:00am Sunday Masses · The 10:00 Mass will continue to feature more traditional music, and the Masses will be sung and led by various cantors and accompanists.

· Once each month, the Contemporary Ensemble with instruments will sing/play at the 10.00 Mass. 12:00pm Sunday Masses

· The 12:00 Mass is designed to serve OLM’s vibrant Latino Community, but know that all parishioners are welcome to join our Latino sisters and brothers in these celebrations.

Note that a schedule of groups and individual musical participants will be published monthly in the Bulletin.

The OLM Music Committee consisting of Fr. Lucas, Tom Botts, Leah Chace, Tamra Hendrickson (staff liaison) and

Susan Shepard will continue to oversee our progress. Please contact any member with your ideas, comments and

concerns as we continue to grow together in this important expression of the liturgical life of our parish.
