FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

THE SPIRIT AT SAINT CHARLES… Last Friday, April 28th the Sacrament of Confirmation was administered to 96 of our seventh graders here at St. Charles Parish by our “Own” Bishop John O’Hara. The Holy Spirit came, not with tongues of fire and a strong wind, but ra-ther gently with the bishop’s anointing of chrism and laying on of hands.

In his excellent homily to the children, Bishop O’Hara used the illustration of a cell phone. That is very appropriate because as we all know many of our young people today are attached to their cell phone and are always glancing at them! The bishop asked the children this question, “What happens if you don’t charge your cell phone?” Of course, the answer came back: “It won’t work!’ Bishop O’Hara then went on to use this analogy and apply it to our Catholic faith. He said, “Unless you plug into your faith by going to Mass on Sunday and receiving the sacraments, your faith will die out, just like an uncharged cell phone!” I think that made a great impression on the kids. It certainly made an im-pression on me! Confirmation is the sacrament that completes our initiation as Catholics. On the Pentecost, 120 fear-ful disciples gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem and received the Holy Spirit. Tongues of fire, like so many flaming chandeliers, hovered over their heads. The Spirit empowered these men, so weak of themselves, to become extraordinary witnesses to Jesus Christ and His Church. Through them the Church started. Pente-cost could be called “The Birthday” of the Catholic Church. Certainly we need the spirit of those first disciples in our own day and age. Many Catholics do not tap into the graces received on confirmation day and so the flame of the spirit can “peter out” just like a dying cell phone! Speaking to confirmation candidates, I always emphasize the fact that it’s not “Graduation” from the Church; it’s a beginning not an end. In that regard, I heard a story about a pastor who had trouble with squir-rels in the Church. They had invaded the sanctuary and it was tough getting them out. The priest tried all kinds of practical ways to get rid of these pests but to no avail. They always returned to Church. Finally, the pastor had an idea. He had each of the squirrels confirmed and they never came back to Church again! Of course we know that’s not a true story. But it is true to say very sadly, that for so many of our Catholic youth, after confirmation they may not “darken the door” of the Church for many years thereafter. We need to remedy this situation. One way to do this is for all of us to follow Bishop O’Hara’s advice and “Plug Into” our religion and live out our faith a bit more enthusiastically. Think of the power of example. Parents are the first teachers of the children in the ways of faith. But if the adults are not setting a good exam-ple by praying and going to Mass on Sunday, then how much can we expect from the kids? Something to think about! Congratulations to all our boys and girls who received the Holy spirit on Friday. May this special gift of God empower them to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ, not for just one day but throughout their whole lives! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
