Book Club

Our next meeting for the book club is Thursday, February 16 at 4 PM in the rectory base-

ment. The book club selection for February is ‘The Two-Family House’ by Lynda Loigman. The story takes place in Brooklyn, 1947. In the midst of a blizzard, in a two-family brownstone, two babies are born, minutes apart. The moth-ers are sister by marriage: dutiful, quiet rose, who wants nothing more than to please her dif-ficult husband; and warm, generous Helen, the exhausted mother of four rambunctious boys who seem to need her less and less each day. Raising their families side by side, supporting one another, Rose and Helen share an impene-trable bond forged before and during that dra-matic winter night.

Peter’s Pence Collection

This weekend, our second collection will be for Peter’s Pence, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charita-ble works around the world. The proceeds ben-efit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victim of war, oppression and disasters.

Welcome to our Neighborhood Ministry

If you know someone new to your neighbor-hood, please contact the rectory to obtain a “Welcome to the Neighborhood” packet which includes a welcome letter from Fr. Jerome, a bulletin and a bottle of holy water. In the spirit of hospitality, your new neighbor does not have to be Catholic, we just want to welcome them to the neighborhood. We ask that all of your, our parishioners, be the “welcomers”, but if you do not feel comfortable visiting a new neighbor, let us know and we will take care of it, care of our welcoming committee.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

CHRISTIAN PARROTS… I heard a story recently about three sons who left home, went on their way and prospered. Getting together after some time, they discussed the gifts they were able to give to their elderly mother. The first said,, “I built a big house for Mom!” The second said, “ I sent her a Mercedes and a driver.” The third smiled and said, “ I’ve got both of you beat! Remember how mom enjoyed reading the Bible? And you know she can’t see very well. I sent her a remarkable parrot that recited the entire Bible. It took the priests three years to teach him. He’s one of a kind. Mom

just has to name the chapter and the verse and the parrot recites it. Soon thereafter, mom sent a letter to each son. “Matt,” she wrote one son, “The house you built is so huge, I live on only one room, but I have to clean the whole house!” “Gerald,” she said to another, “ I am too old to travel. I spend most of my time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes and besides the driver is so rude! “Dearest Donald,” she wrote to her third son, “You have the sense to know what your mother likes. The chick-en was delicious!” That story came to my mind when I read about what the Holy Father Pope Francis had to say in the Vatican recently about some Catholic Christians. Pope Francis criticized believers who talk a good show in terms of their faith, but then do nothing in reality. He stressed that we must accompany our faith with good deeds in order to serve God better. Pope Francis said, “If I say I’m Catholic and every Sunday go to mass but then I don’t talk to my par-ents, I don’t help my grandparents, the poor, I don’t visit the sick, then there’s no point,” he said. “In that way, we’re nothing but a Christian Parrot-words, words, words!” I think that Pope Francis is really on to something here. Obviously there should not be a disconnect between our profession of faith and then our practice of it. There was a rhyme that went something like this: “Mister Smith went to church on Sunday. But Mister Smith went to hell for what he did on Mondays!” Mr. Smith’s worship had no practical effect on his life! When we receive holy Communion on Sundays, we are receiving the Body of Jesus Christ within us. It is more than just a piece of bread and sip of wine. Communion means union with Christ and so we should be becoming more like him or at least trying to do that. There’s an intertia in our nature that makes us lazy in combatting the faults that all of us have. The saints often had the same failings that we do, but because they were so devoted to Christ and their faith, they were able to overcome them. Take for example Saint Francis de Sales whose feast we celebrated on January 24th. Francis de Sales was a Bishop of the Church and a great teacher. But he also had a very hot and explosive temper. Many times the blood would rush to his head when he suffered some humiliation and he would have to check himself. It took him twenty years to do it, but he conquered that bad temper and he became known as the “Gentle Saint.” No one suspected that he even struggled with that problem. Now for you and me, it might be something else that we have to address spiritually speaking. Let us not be “Christian Parrots” with just nothing but words, words, words! Rather let us live out our faith con-cretely in the practical, every situation of our lives! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
