ChristChurch Transitional Cathedral

CATHEDRAL CHOIR MUSIC LIST

Term One, 2019 (30 Jan – 1 Mar) Updated 29 January 2019

WELCOME FROM THE DEAN Welcome to the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral. This is an exquisitely beautiful place in the heart of the recovering City of Christchurch. This building exists for the glory of God in Jesus Christ and for the good of all people. It is the newest Cathedral in New Zealand and stands as a sign of hope and as a place of prayer for everyone. Cathedrals are places of spiritual exuberance, and yet there is a simplicity in this building that calls us to the peace that God longs to give. This is a place where worship takes place in countless forms and music pours forth in daily offerings of resonant beauty. As the psalmist says:

Through all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy, The praises of my God shall still My heart and tongue employ. (From Psalm 34, Nahum Tate and Nicolas Brady, 1696)

You are invited to come and be part of this daily offering of worship and prayer which is offered in this Cathedral. St Augustine said, “Whoever sings [to God in worship], prays twice.” Our prayer is that everyone who joins in worship in this place will not only experience the love of God in the worship itself, but also hear the Good News that this love is available for you. Love is our origin, love is our constant calling, love is our fulfilment in heaven. We pray that this love will be your experience as you join in with the worship and singing in this Cathedral. May God bless you here at this Transitional Cathedral, as you join us to sing and to pray, and to offer our thanks and our praises to God.

The Very Rev’d Lawrence Kimberley Dean of the Transitional Cathedral, Christchurch.

THE CHOIR OF CHRISTCHURCH CATHEDRAL The ChristChurch Cathedral Choir has sung choral services since the Cathedral opened in 1881. The Cathedral Grammar School was established some months before the Cathedral was opened to train choristers to sing at the Cathedral services. This choral tradition has been maintained through the subsequent 130 years, maintaining this unique English choral tradition in the Southern Hemisphere. The full choir consists of twenty boys and ten men. The boys receive scholarships to attend The Cathedral Grammar School. The men of the choir are either Lay Clerks (professional singers, highly skilled in the art of Anglican choral tradition) or Godley Wakefield Scholars (college or tertiary students - talented young singers, many training for careers as professional singers).

CHORAL SERVICES ARE SUNG AT THE FOLLOWING TIMES:

CHORAL EVENSONG Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at 5.30pm; Friday at 4.30pm;

Sunday at 5.00pm

CHORAL EUCHARIST OR SPECIAL SERVICE Sunday at 10.00am
