I f i rst met Pat Metheny almost 25 years ago. In 1973, I was

I in Miami, Florida playing a concert with Ornette ColemanI

I when Pat , who wou ld have been about 18 a t the t ime,I

th roughout the mid-70 's , we wou ld somet imes ta lk on the

occasions when we would play concerts opposite each other

during Pat's stay in Gary Burton's band, and mine with Keith

Jarrett. l t wasn't real ly t i l l 1980, however, when he asked me to

followed it, that we became the close friends that we are today.

Since then we have toured, played and recorded together in

Cameron and I were married in 1989, Pat was my "best man".

Ruth and I real ly feel l ike he is part of our family.

Pat and I have talked about making this duet album for

many years and now, f inal ly, we've taken the t ime to record i t .

I h a v e a l w a y s a d m i r e d P a t ' s m u s i c a l v i s i o n . H i s m e l o d i e s ,

chords and voicing are unique unto him. He is an innovator in

the sound he gets, as he is in his composing and improvising.

depth and beauty only found in the best improvised music. His 5

musical presentation is always beyond catcgory, and his sense

of the sound in music that comes f rom the f trcl ing of this country

is uncanny. Of course, he is from Missouri, as I am, which surely

has someth ing to do w i th i t . l ca l l h is sound, " t ;on tc t r rpor i t ry

Pat wanted to do a completely acoustic duet album. My

feel ing was that this would l imit the possibi l i t ies of what a true

col laboration between the two of us could be, given the range

of music that we are both interested and involved in. I wanted

to do something that would obviously include straight duets, but

would also include the more expansive use of modern musical

admired as a trademark of Pat 's own records for many years.

I have been saving songs for this recording for some t ime now'

Some are songs tha t wou ld obv ious ly func t ion we l l as duets ,

but some are songs where I could imagine an almost orchestral

approach, using the various addit ional guitars and synths that

Pat has managed to incorporate so natural ly and organical ly

in to h is sound.

add i t iona l o rches t ra t ions to f i l l the tunes ou t ; somet imes asingle extra acoustic guitar, sometimes more involved synclavierorchestrat ion, but always in the service of, and derived from, what we actual ly played.

O u r c r i t e r i a f o r c h o o s i n g s o n g s w e r e s i m p l y t o f i n dbeauti ful melodies and chords that inspired us. At the beginningof the project, I sent Pat a cassette of four songs I had beenthinking about for this record to inspire him and to give him anidea about what kind of record I wanted to make. He cal led meback right away to say that he loved all of the songs, and in fact,

we went on to record them all. They were : "The Precious Jewel'la song made famous by the Delmore Brothers, a group whoseharmony has inf luenced al l of country music from the 30's to thepresent and whose music has had an enormous inf luence on myli fe; "The Moon ls a Harsh Mistress", a Jim Webb song that

Joe Cocker played for me many years ago; a Jo Stafford/PaulWeston version of "He's Gone Away", an old folk song that mymother used to sing on our Haden family radio show in the 40'sunder the t i t le "The Railroad Man"; and the main theme from thefi lm "Cinema Paradiso" by Ennio Morricone. I also had two ofmy original composit ions, "Our Spanish Love Song" and "First
