The Best Is Yet To Come!

As far as the weather goes, late October is probably my favorite time of the year. Now the “Dry Season” is

here we should have many more days of riding. October has been a very good riding month for us. We started

out this month in Eufaula, Alabama at the Alabama Monster Mash Rally at the Lakepoint State Park. Alabama

District Directors Carl & Janis Breeding and the Alabama District Team put on an outstanding Rally. It was so

great to hook up with so many of our Alabama friends again as well as those friends from the surrounding

states who came to have fun.

Then there were the outstanding Chapter Rides, the Freedom Rides – Because we can and the “Footloose

“Rides, that we like so much every week. In addition to the ride to Doug & Lil’s Potato Patch Restaurant, in

Deland and the Kick Tire to the Olive Garden in Palm Coast. Then there was the Biketoberfest Activities in

Daytona Beach and surrounding areas. The Biker Breakfast at the United Methodist Church in Edgewater is

always a fan favorite.

We can never say enough great things about the Mississippi District

Pajama Party in Gulf Port, MS on October 21, 22 & 23rd. Things got off

to a wild and raucous time at the pajama Party Costume Contest on

Thursday evening. I was super proud of my outfit taking First Place

again this year. I will wrap up this article but presenting the beautiful

Jeanette and I at the Pajama Party. Thanks to District Directors Charles

and Melinda Lipe and their Team for putting such an excellent rally.

We hope you making plans to attend the 42nd Annual Florida

District Gathering of the Wings, March 17, 18 & 19th, 2022, at the

Altamonte Springs Hilton for the Florida District Rally and Wing your way to Emerald City and have Fun with the Wizard of Oz. Information about Hotel and Rally registration are on the District Website @

gwrraflorida.com.

We hope to see you at a GWRRA event in 2021,

Couple of the Year Bob & Linda Coulson

Time for the Holidays

It seems like on September 1, the world, or my world, shifts: it’s no longer time to hit the beach or nap by the

pool, or travel to fun spots. Beginning in September, there are a multitude of holidays, celebrations, memori-

als, etc. And with that, there will be lots of gatherings, travel and/or yummy food and drink.

In September, of course, school starts: and the kiddos are back in session learning (hopefully) from those

we’ve entrusted with their education to grow into productive, knowledgeable, compassionate and empathic

young men and women (along with, of course, plenty of opportunities for fun and play).

September 11 brings a recall of how evil and dangerous the world can be. It can also show us how, when

something horrific happens, the world can pull together and show support, as strangers around the globe em-

braced us with their tears and prayers. We remember those who passed in the collapse of the towers and on

the planes; and we remember those who gave their lives in the rescue and recovery operations.

Then comes Halloween. Yes, it’s fun to see the kids all dressed up and so proud of their costumes; their faces

full of excitement as they parade up and down the streets, yelling out, “Happy Halloween!” Then they arrive

home, proud of their stash of scrumptious and oh so not healthy Halloween candy (which mom/dad secretly

inspect to insure its safety; and to, maybe, sneak a piece or two or several for themselves – yep, been there,

done that).

Veteran’s Day gives us an opportunity to honor those who have served in our military branches; and who con-

tinue to honor us with their presence.

Then comes Thanksgiving: a day on which we should give thanks for all of our blessings. Hopefully, that’s

not overlooked by all of the food placed on our tables, and all of the family and friends gathered around it. I

would like to think that we all stop and give thanks throughout the year, every year for our blessings, big and

small.

And with all of that, there will be lots of opportunity for laughter, hugs (hopefully so this year after almost two

years of virtual embraces), and the exchanging of fond (and maybe not so fond) moments of times gone by.

So……. Now, you may be asking: what does this trip through the Holidays run down have to do with motor-

cycles and riding?

Not much. Sorry. I guess I got preachy. That happens in my line of work sometimes.

If I were to try to relate the holidays I’d say this:

Back to school: get on that bike, practice your skills and become, or continue to be, a safe rider/passenger.

September 11: remember friends, family and fellow riders always in your thoughts and prayers. Celebrate

their lives.

Halloween: just as the kids have various costumes and collect a multitude of candies, every bike seems to be

decorated a bit differently with accessories. It’s so much fun to go to gatherings and see how beautiful (and

sometimes crazy) bikes can become as extension of their owner.

Thanksgiving: give thanks that we have had the abilities to own a bike, to make it an extension of who we are;

and, of course, to still be riding after all these years.

May you wander in life, curious enough to know all of its riches and blessings. And stay connected: it keeps

your mind healthy and your heart happy.

Level’s Classes Available

Hello all,

Florida District Riding and MFA Classes are available upon request to maintain you Levels status. For

ARC and TRC Classes contact Dominick at [email protected]. For MFA Classes contact Claudia at

[email protected]. Watch for upcoming Riding Class and MFA Class Announcements on Group

Works.

ENGINE BRAKING…..OR NOT Let’s first define what Engine Braking is. Engine Braking is slowing down your motorcycle or trike by down

shifting into a lower gear and letting the clutch out slowly to slow down the bike.

Now let’s talk about different reasons Riders Engine Brake. Some do it for the noise. If they have loud pipes

on their bike they like the loud backing down sound of the engine. Some Riders Engine Brake to help aid the

braking system of the bike to slow the bike down during slowing or stopping. Other Riders Engine Brake to

slow the bike down to a proper entry speed for a curve and choose the gear they want to enter the curve with.

You might also Engine Brake to slow your bike down when you are approaching a stale red light anticipating

the light will turn green before you arrive and thus you will be in the correct gear to continue on your way

without stopping.

Let’s now discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the examples I have given. If you are Engine Braking

for the noise that is your choice as long as while you are doing so you are not also compromising your safety

as I will explain. If you are Engine Braking to aid with your stopping think about what mechanically you are

doing to your bike. When you routinely Engine Brake for normal stopping you are putting unnecessary wear

and tear on your bike’s drive train components. That means extra stress on your engine, clutch, chain, shaft or

belt. The chain or belt is being stretched unnecessarily or your drive shaft u-joints are being put under extra

stress. The clutch is engaging a moving fly wheel to slow the bike down adding extra contact and wear on it.

To replace any of these components I have listed costs much more than Just having to replace a set of brake

pads. You are talking hundreds if not thousands of dollars to replace the engine and drive train components as

opposed to replacing a $40.00 set of brake pads.

Now let’s discuss the safety aspect in Engine Braking to slow down your bike. If you have to brake hard you

should be using the Threshold Braking Method. That means you are putting the brakes on as hard as you can

to the point just before the tires begin to skid. If you also Engine Brake you are risking breaking the rear tire

loose and skidding because of the extra stress you just added to the rear tire. Most of the modern day motorcy-

cles have ABS (Antilock Braking System). That means the braking system will take over if you accidentally

apply too much brake pressure and either tire begins to skid. The ABS system will not let the tires skid if you

are using brakes only. If you add Engine Braking incorrectly at the same time you are using the brakes you

could lock up the rear tire. You have defeated the purpose of having an ABS System. The ABS System cannot

correct the rear wheel skid if the reason you are skidding is because you let the clutch out too fast or at the

wrong speed in the wrong gear. Remember if you are using Engine Braking to set up a proper entry speed be-

fore entering a curve, get the clutch back out before you begin to lean. When you lean over for the curve your

rear tire is now on its edge with much less tire surface area touching the road. There should be no more Engine

Braking stress applied on your rear tire once you are in a lean. The extra stress on the rear tire caused by En-

gine Braking along with the centrifugal force being applied to your rear tire could cause the rear tire to slide

out from under you.

Engine Braking…..or not. Now you know the pros and cons. What will be your choice?

We are here to assist you with your training needs.

On the Lighter Side

Commandments For Seniors

#1 – Talk to yourself. There are times you need ex-pert advice.

#2 - "In Style" are the clothes that still fit.

#3 – You don't need anger management. You need people to stop irritating you.

#4 – Your people skills are just fine. It's your toler-ance for idiots that need work.

#5 – The biggest lie you tell yourself is, "I don't need to write that down. I'll remember it."

#6 - "On time" is when you get there.

#7 – Even duct tape can't fix stupid – but it sure does muffle the sound.

#8 – It would be wonderful if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes then come out wrinkle-

free...and three sizes smaller.

#9 – Lately, you've noticed people your age are so much older than you.

#10 – Growing old should have taken longer.

#11 – Aging has slowed you down, but it hasn't shut you up.

#12 – You still haven't learned to act your age and hope you never will.

And one more:

#13 - One for the road" means peeing before you leave the house.
