Chapter Director’s MessageBy: Carolyn & Ted Russell, Chapter Director’s

I found myself sitting at a restaurant at lunch beside Gary and across the table from Mary and Gary. It was rhyme city that day. As the lunch conversation meandered from one topic to another we started commenting on how to judge a good restaurant. I shared with them my 5 Star System.

My Five Star Rating is very simple. One Star for GOOD FOOD. That includes not only well cooked food but their menu in general. I like to have a variety to choose from and I want it to be tasty and delicious. Star Two is for GOOD SERVICE. My time may not be valueable to others but it sure is valueable to me. I don’t want to sit and wait a long time for service. I also don’t like to be interrupted when telling a story to see if I want more water in my glass. If it’s low, just put some in. You don’t have to ask me. Keep it professional. I don’t want to hear about your past experiences. Save them for ‘your’ friends. I’m here with ‘my’ friends right now. Star Three: CLEAN ESTABLISHMENT. Now I don’t know what the kitchen looks like, but I do know what my plates, silverware, table, floor, windows, and bathrooms look like. I judge accordingly. Star Four: GOOD PRICES. I know. I want all this and I want a good price to boot. But it’s true. I don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for a meal. I don’t want the cheapest prices, but I do think that the two of us should be able to eat a meal without breaking our wallets. Afterall, I want some money to buy gas on the way home. Star Five: GOOD PARKING LOT. You can have a great place, with good food, prices, great waitstaff, and if I have trouble parking, I might just not come back. On a motorcycle I like paved parking versus stone or gravel, or heaven forbid, sugar sand. I’ve been to some places that I wonder if they have something behind the kitchen to help folks that got stuck getting out of their parking lots.

Restaurants have a hard time staying competitive with all the places we as patrons have to choose. I never complain, be rude, or become loud. I’m not a food critic writing for a newsletter, but if I give a restaurant 5 Stars, then I share that place with my friends and tell others they might want to try it. Word of mouth is a powerful tool.

I tend to frequent restaurants that I have given five stars. I think everyone has their favorite places to grab a good meal. Being a motorcycle rider I have the opportunity to try a variety of restaurants on my excursions around the state. I’m always on the lookout for a 5 Star restaurant.

Happy riding and eating!

Individual of the Year2013

Gary HoopHow do you say thank you to honor a person for their hard work for the chapter? Gary Hoop is just that person. As Chapter W’s Ride Coordinator, he has done an outstanding job of coordinating rides and events for our chapter. Many of those rides he had lead himself picking routes that show us the beauty of Central Florida. He’s positivity rubs off on those around him and he invites anyone he meets to our meetings and rides. Gary is a vital part of the Chapter W team and we thank him for the efforts and work he continues to provide for the chapter. Congratulations, Gary!

Happy Valentine’s DayIn the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine's Day.

Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800s.

Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the telephone, an "Improvement in Telegraphy", on Valentine's Day, 1876.

The oldest surviving love poem to date is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians around 3500 BC.

In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future husband.

More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold for Valentine's Day each year.

About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged in the USA each year. That's the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.

Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentine's Day each year.

...in the RearviewShrimps R Us - First Ride of 2013By: Sue Larson, Member

The First Ride of 2013 was on January 1, 2013. We rode to Shrimps R Us restaurant in Welaka, FL. It was a beautiful day, sunny and warm, unusual for a New Year’s Day in sunny Florida. It was our first ride since returning to Florida from our home state of Minnesota. We joined the group on SR 44 and CR437. We were happy to see old friends and new. We had 22 people on this ride. We all rode along enjoying the sunshine and anticipating our lunch at Shrimps R Us. When we arrived there were Gold Wings of all color and ages. Both bikes and trikes were a sight to see! There were about 200 people in attendance, but the buffet line moved along quickly. The food was great and I’m sure everyone left there stuffed. We all enjoyed our time visiting with our fellow bikers. This was our second trip to Shrimps R Us and we will try to fit it in again next year. It was a very enjoyable way to spend a New Year’s Day.

...in the RearviewNick’s Family DinerBy: Carolyn Russell, Chapter Director

We said we would meet at Nick’s on SR441 in Lockhart for breakfast and then if the weather was good we would go for a ride. Sixteen showed up and we just kept putting tables together. Thank goodness Fannie and Mickey had stopped in the day before to let them know we were coming. After we ate we took off for a ride. We stopped off at Claire Lang’s workplace to drop off her lunch. Then we headed south. Welcome to Mary! This was her first ride with us. And we did two u-turns when we hit dirt roads. Of course, on the way home we stopped off for a treat of ice cream. It was a great day!

January’s GatheringBy: Connie Miller, Couple of the Year

On Saturday January 12, 2013 we had our monthly Chapter Gathering. The afternoon started at Perkins with visiting each other and enjoying dinner. Carolyn and Ted (our Chapter Directors) were both feeling under the weather and yet they managed to keep us all laughing and having a great time. They introduced Gary Hoop as the Individual of the Year for 2013. Thank you Gary, for your time and dedication it takes to plan and lead some exciting rides. We also had candy flying in the room. Whenever Ted or Carolyn would say “Chapter W,” the group responded with “W,” and they would throw a few pieces of candy into the crowd. It was a great way to keep everyone involved and having a good time. We ended the gathering with Kevin conducting the traditional drawings, door prizes, chapter pride and 50/50. Michelle Mowat and Ruth Polley won the drawing for Chapter Pride. Cliff Hotchkiss and Diane Andberg won the 50/50. Congratulations to you all.

Carribean Jack’s Lunch RideBy: Claire Lang, Assistant Chapter Director

Rarely do I get the opportunity to participate in a week day Wing Lunch Ride; however on Thursday, January 17th, I was able to take a day off work to join a group of Wingers on the Lunch Ride to Caribbean Jack’s in Daytona Beach. Just the name, Caribbean Jack’s unleashes visions of fun in the sun, with friends. The morning began gloriously as Kevin Lang, Road Captain, escorted us through some scenic back roads through Seminole and Volusia County.  Gary Miller, Michelle, Doug, Sue, Dick and Denny Champ joined together for this ride.  Gary was an awesome Tail Gunner. Food for thought: Caribbean Jack’s has some of the best tasting clam chowder we have ever eaten. Towards the end of our meal, the weather outside turned ugly with increasing winds, as cloudy grey skies turned cold. Thus a group decision was made to skip the Helmet Shop visit. Dick and Sue went shopping and the rest of us headed back towards home to avoid any further foul weather.  It was a great day.

Multi-Chapter Breakfast RallyBy: Michelle Mowat, Member

On Sunday, January 20th, the Multi-Chapter Breakfast was held in Titusville. There were 3 bikes and 4 people that left the Mobil in Apopka at 8:30: Doug and Michelle Mowat, Angelo and Karen Messano. We arrived at the North Brevard Shrine Club about 10 and headed in for breakfast. The first people we found inside the door were Ruth and Nolan Polley, who were more than happy to accept our payment. Breakfast was good and then we took a wander around and checked out the games and prizes. About 11:30, we decided to head out and after a parking lot meeting we had a plan of action. We had a late lunch at Squid Lips in Melbourne, which was very good, and then we turned north towards home. At the end of the day the trip meter read 275 miles, so all in all it was a great day.

Chapter Ride to Stumpknockers on the RiverBy: Kay Ethridge, Member

On Saturday, January 26, sixteen of us on eleven bikes rode to Stumpknockers in Dunnellon..  It was a perfect riding day, sunny but cool.  KSU (Kick Stands Up) at the Mobil at 9:00 a.m.  Our Road Captain, Gary Hoop, had planned a beautiful, meandering route through the countryside.  We stopped at a Sunoco about halfway for refreshments and a break.

Stumpknockers is uniquely comfortable and located on the  Withlacoochee River.  It is noted for its delicious seafood.  The food was varied, and our waitress made sure we wanted for nothing.

We stopped, of course, for dessert (ice cream at a Mickey Dee's) on our way home.  We had an awesome almost 200 mile ride.

Front Porch Restaurant & Pie ShopBy: Carolyn Russell, Newsletter Editor

What a glorious day to get your nose in the wind! The sun was shining brightly as eleven of us made our way to the Front Porch Restaurant & Pie Shop on Rt. 41 just south of Dunnellon. We followed our Road Captain, Kevin Lang, as he led us through Lake Panasoffkee area where spanish moss draped the trees. We rode through a canopy of tunnels made by the branches and leaves of large Florida oaks. We stopped for a break near I-75 to get warmed up and put on more layers. The restaurant was a hive of activity but we had called ahead and they reserved a place for us to sit family style. Some got pie after the meal and it stands up to the boast. The pie was so good that Kevin and Ted bought takeout pie for later at home. We zipped home afterward in warmer temperatures, but that wonderful Florida sunshine was with us all day. It was a great day to ride!

Fort Gates FerryBy: Kevin Lang, Assistant Chapter Director

Since 1853, the Fort Gates Ferry has transported farmers, soldiers, livestock, wagons and now motor vehicles from the Salt Springs area of the Ocala National Forest to the little community of Fruitland to the east. In the old days the ferry pilot employed a long pole to push the little barge and cargo across the wide river. After the Civil War, a steam-driven boat nudged the barge from bank to bank. Now, Dale Jones is at the wheel of a little tugboat powered by an internal combustion engine. The tug and barge are almost a century old. Dale Jones and Dick Hackett, a relative, own the ferry and the Fort Gates Fish Camp on the Fruitland side of the river. They also rent boat slips and cabins.

Before it was a fish camp and before the ferry began operating, Fort Gates was a federal encampment during the longest Indian uprising in U.S. history, the Second Seminole War, which lasted from 1835 to 1842. During the Civil War the ferry transported Confederate troops. Once there were dozens of Florida ferries, but now only four remain. The Fort Gates Ferry transports about 1,500 vehicles a year across one of the most remote sections of the St. Johns. It takes about 15 minutes to make the 1-mile crossing. Otherwise, you have to travel 50 miles, by roadway, to make the same crossing of the St Johns River.

The ferry operates as needed between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. every day except Tuesday. At the fish camp side, just knock on the office door. From the Ocala National Forest side, customers have three options to alert the ferry pilot. You can call their cell phone (386-467-9414) and hope for the best. Or, you can blow your horn and hope the wind is blowing toward Jones. But, the time-honored way is to drive to the river bank and turn on your headlights.

There are no paved roads leading to the ferry on either side of the river. On the fish camp side, the 1-mile-long dirt road is always passable and close to civilization in an emergency. On the Ocala National Forest side (off of Highway 19), a motorist requires a sense of adventure. The yellow sand road to the river weaves through wilderness for 7 miles. The road is known as National Forest Road 43, Salt Springs Road, Fort Gates Road and Florida Bear Scenic Highway. Motorists who break down are more likely to see bears than tow trucks. The dirt roads on both sides are hard packed and are just a little challenging by motorcycle but passable.

Look Twice, Save A Life Motorist AwarenessBy: Ken and Mary Ann Long, Ride Educators

The District conference was held January 5-6. After attending the Rider Educator part of the agenda, I had time to sit in on the Motorists Awareness meeting. At this time FL1-W does not have a Motorists Awareness Coordinator (MAC). The MAC of a chapter maintains a supply of hand out items. These items are then distributed at events a chapter, or any of its members may have or may attend.

As an example, I was thinking I might set up a card table at one of the flea markets our subdivision holds each year. Believe me, there are plenty of Motorists Awareness opportunities living in a 55 plus community. What community activities might you attend that could give you an opportunity to distribute educational items and answer any questions? I’m sure you could think of at least one event where Motorist Awareness could be promoted

The bottom line is: This is a call for ALL of FL1-W to get involved in Motorist Awareness. If we find one individual, or couple, to fill the MAC position they would just need to find a few appropriate times, places or events for our members to take a turn distributing valuable information. They would also maintain supplies (pamphlets, bumper stickers) obtained from our District officers. We would be making more motorists aware that we are out there and want to stay safe! For more information go online to the new District website. http://fla.gwrra-regiona.org/index.html Please see Carolyn Russell if you would like to step up and become the MAC for FL1-W.

Wing Ding 2013, Greenville, SC

By: Paul and Diane Andberg, MEC

I notice that GWRRA is launching into high gear in their advertising for Wing Ding 2013. They say “Don't forget to take advantage of our preregistration bundle. A $108 value for ONLY $83! Visit our web site www.wing-ding.org for more information.”

“Registrations continue to pour in and are up over 200% compared to last year at this time so be sure to join your friends, and make new ones, at what is bound to be a great event - Wing Ding 35 this July 3-6, 2013 in Greenville, South Carolina!”

They are also promoting their demo programs. “More Demo's Than Ever! Wing Ding will again be a great opportunity to test ride the latest and greatest models from more providers than ever before!  American Honda Motor Company will again lead the charge with their all new 2013 Gold Wing and many other models!”

“We are also pleased to announce the return of Harley Davidson Motor Company as they will again be offering demos of their latest touring models and more!  You can also experience the latest trike conversions and other offerings from these great providers:

Bushtec ProductsCalifornia SidecarChampion Trikes

Hannigan MotorsportsLehman Trikes

Let’s Go For A RideBy: Gary Hoop, Ride Coordinator

Before I joined GWRRA, I was riding regularly with a local group of motorcyclists in Tavares. Most riders lived in my retirement community (Royal Harbor) and other similar communities nearby. We met every Wednesday morning year round. Fact is, we still do and I continue to ride with them. We have 10+ bikes in the summer months and often 20+ bikes in the winter months. All makes welcome. That is a little background to tell you about two Wednesday rides in January.

My mother was with us for a month’s visit in January. I took her for a short ride last year when she was down from Ohio in March. She liked it and said she wanted to go along on one of my Wednesday rides this visit! “Mom, we’ll be gone most of the day!” She said okay; she still wanted to go. We were blessed with great weather on January 9th with afternoon temperatures in the low 80’s. Our ride was to Ormond Beach that day with a stop at J&P cycle. We got home around 3:00 pm and had covered 150 miles. She loved it, so there was no doubt about the next Wednesday ride. She was in! We had great 80’s weather again, so it worked out well. This ride was to “Shrimps-R-Us” in Welaka. We got home around 4:00 pm this time and covered 160 miles. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. Mom is 88!

This month our Saturday ride will be to Titusville on the 26th. We will eat at Dixie Crossroads, famous for their shrimp!

Come join us as we always endeavor to Ride Safe!
