Genitourinary (GU)

Genitourinary Disorders:

• Dysuria - painful urination • Hematuria- blood in urine

• Hematospermia- blood in the semen

• Scrotal Mass• Testicular Pain

• Priapism- erection lasting more than 4 hours without sexual

stimulation• Urinary Incontinence

• Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

Pertaining to genital and urinary systems

Acute Renal Failure (ARF)

• Kidney function stops working rapidly or suddenly • Results in build up of waste products, fluids and electrolytes

Causes:• Serious drop in blood flow to the kidneys cause by injury or infection

• Damage from medication especially patients who have long term health

problem

• A sudden blockage that stops urine from flowing out of the kidneys – Kidney stones, tumor, enlarged

prostate

Chronic Renal Failure (CRF)

• Slow progressive deterioration of kidney function- long standing that

may take months or years

Causes:• High Blood Pressure

• Type I and II Diabetes

• Untreated Acute Renal Failure leads to this stage

Cystoscopy

(sis-TOS-ko-pe)

(cysto)• A procedure used to see inside bladder and urethra

• Also known as cystourethroscopy

• The tube, cytoscope is equipped with a lens and its carefully inserted in urethra

that slowly advances into the bladder

• Used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for

bladder and urinary tract disease and

conditions

Extracorporeal Shock Wave

Lithotripsy (ESWL)

• A therapeutic procedure that uses high energy waves that

breaks down kidney stones into smaller pieces to pass easily

through urinary tract

• A stent is sometimes used to hold the urethra open and

prevent blockage

• Patient may opt for sedatives or local anesthesia. Process

takes no more than an hour – an outpatient procedure
