Notes from the Prez: October brings cool crisp mornings and nice clear evenings, I hope some of you were able to go out and see the Fall colors. I had Vickis brother and his wife visiting a week ago and got to take them up to see the trees in full color. One of their comments was You just cant see all of this glorious color from the ground, how very true!
This month is our Annual Auction Fundraiser on meeting night the 26th. We will again have Jim from JJs Auction Service doing the auction. We plan to have many items with some thing for everyone. This includes a number of aircraft plans donated to the chapter at the last breakfast.
Please keep in mind that elections are coming up in November and we have opportunities for more members to get involved in the leadership of the chapter. Officers and board members are needed as well as Newsletter Editor, Program Chairperson, Workshop Chairperson, Food and Coffee team, Young Eagles Team Leaders, and other areas to help staff the chapter. Talk to other members and be ready to nominate them at the Nov meeting.
Our November speaker from Alaska cannot make the meeting, however, I think he is still donating a certificate for the auction. We will have lots of fun at the auction on Monday night, bring a friend and a checkbook!
This month we had an EAA Chapter 237 members aircraft featured on the front cover of Sport Aviation Congratulations to Al, Jack, and the team!
Happy landings, Bob

Date- Time- Webinar Subject
10/28/15 7 pm Flying the Tailwheel Airplane: Key Points for Becoming a Great Stick and Rudder Pilot (W) Master CFI and experienced tailwheel instructor Jim Alsip, suggests that weak stick and rudder pilot skills and/or bad habits inhibit a pilots ability to become a proficient tailwheel pilot. This presentation is based upon Jims book Flying the Tailwheel Airplane, and seeks to identify and offer solutions to the basic, yet elusive, stick and rudder skills. The subjects discussed are applicable to all pilots, regardless of what kind of an airplane they fly.
11/4/15 8 pm Carbon Monoxide - Silent Killer (AW) Maintenance expert Mike Busch illustrates the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) in the cockpit by reviewing a number of CO-related accidents. He discusses the physiology of CO poisoning, sources of CO in the cockpit, and provides specific recommendations on the best CO detectors for cockpit use.
11/11/15 7 pm Precession Precision: Taming Turning Tendency (W) Many pilots report (especially when flying Light Sport Aircraft) that raising the nose causes the plane to yaw in one direction, and lowering it yaws them in the opposite direction. This gives LSAs a reputation for being instable (or squirrely). In fact, these aircraft are merely obeying natural laws. Retired physics professor Paul Shuch will teach you how to anticipate, detect, and conquer gyroscopic precession.
11/24/15 7 pm Drones: The New Frontier? Scott "Sky" Smith discusses the ever growing field of Drones or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Sky will talk about common questions such as: How will drones affect us as pilots? Ways to use that new drone? Do you need an exemption 333? Review of rules for model aircraft vs. commercial or government use. Additional information on the basics of risk management as an operator.
12/2/15 8 pm Piston Engine (In)Efficiency (AW) In today's world of $5/gallon avgas, it's a painful truth that our piston aircraft engines only convert about one-third of the fuel's energy into useful power. Mike Busch explains why the other two-thirds of the energy is wasted, and what we can do to reduce that waste and maximize engine efficiency. Qualifies for FAA Wings and AMT credit.

John Hopkins (EAA Director of Aircraft Maintenance) needs our help!!
I spoke with John a last month, and the EAA Weeks Hangar personnel are swamped with projects that need to get done! The EAA Tri-Motor is in parts all over the hangar and Tom, Gerard & Mike are doing there best to get it back together and keep up with other required maintenance issues. They need to be rescued!
The weekend of November 13th-15th we will be heading to Oshkosh again to help in any and every way we can. Everyone (including female members) is invited to participate...experience not required. This past January and February our participation was outstanding and 20+ members make the trip each time. EAA supplied us with free lodging, a few prepared meals at the Air Academy Lodge, and movie nights & behind the ropes access to aircraft at the museum. We worked hard, accomplished a lot, and had a great time!
Let's have an even bigger crew lend a hand this time! John will be extremely appreciative and he said the beer will be on ice and the grills fired up!! Also, it might even increase our chance of hosting the Tri-Motor in 2016. (hint, hint...Kristy & Olivia)
Please let me know, at your earliest convenience, if you're interested in volunteering with this November work party. Other EAA MN chapter members are also invited. You will have until November 1st to make your decision. EAA will need to be notified of the numbers by then so preparations can be made.
Kirk E. Fjetland, email: [email protected] USN (Ret.) Events and Communications OIC - EAA Chapter 237 (ANE) Young Eagles Coordinator - EAA Chapter 237 (ANE) Discover Aviation Days (ANE) Board Member EAA #867374, AOPA #03396989
Kirk talked with Pat Harker about his B-25 and getting part for the one we're working on. Pat is more than willing to work with us and selling parts that we may need. He is not sure exactly what parts he has available, but we will get that figured out at a later date.
We have started laying out our "game plan". Bob Heavirland and Curt Stolz are experienced project managers that have begun the process. Pictured below, at left, is the B25 nose holding fixture built by Ron Fitchner at the chapter hangar!
