From The Principal BACK TO SCHOOL A GOOD START TO THE YEAR It is hard to believe that today is our ninth day of school as it feels like we have been back a while. Our students have settled in very well thanks to our teachers, administration and leadership team, and our families. It is a major exercise starting up a new school year and the number of working days from the beginning of January to the return of our teachers on the 25 th January was not as long as we could have used for our holiday clean up. Our increased numbers at the main campus, and doubling of numbers at the Senior College and our occupation of an additional floor there, has kept us very busy. We are now settling in to our routines and helping our students develop their routines, and we have been very pleased with how our students have settled in. It has been great to see students move in to their homework routines, and to see all the homework regularly being communicated on the Middle School Homework site. Thank you to all our staff members, Uniform shop volunteers, teachers, parents and students for making a great start to the year. The banner on our street corner says ―It‘s a new school year, make the most of it‖, and we look forward to now moving ahead with the many programs and activities we have been planning.

ONE YEAR SINCE THE OPENING OF OUR NEW SENIOR COLLEGE AT CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY It is hard to believe that it is only one year since our Senior College opened at Charles Darwin University. On Thursday 27

th January, 2011, at 4 pm

the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Honorable Paul Henderson, officially opened our new senior college, The Essington International Senior College, Charles Darwin University. Over 130 members of the school, university and Darwin community attended the official opening (including past parents, School Board members and Chairs, and friends of Essington). This year we have extended our programs through to Year 12 and have our Academies of Excellence Programs planned in Science, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Visual Art, Japanese and Chinese. There are also many co-curricular activities planned for our Senior College students. One of these, our Learn to Fly program, will be held in Term 3 and it will be the twelfth year in a row that we have conducted this program at Batchelor Airstrip. Our students from Essington, and our new students have settled in well to life on a university campus and are being opened up to all the opportunities for post secondary study available at Charles Darwin University.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENINGS This week we commenced our Parent Information Evenings with our Preschool and Transition Information Evenings during the week. Please note the dates and times for these information evenings (on the front page of our school bulletin, and on our 2012 School Calendar). These are important evenings as they allow you to formally meet with your child‘s teacher and other parents, and for us to share some information about our plans for the coming school year.

YEAR 6 HISTORICAL HARBOUR EXCURSION ON THE BOMBING OF DARWIN On Thursday afternoon a group of our Year 6 students trialed a history excursion on Darwin harbour that we plan to do with most of our Middle School students. Our Year 6 students explored the story of the Bombing of Darwin from the harbour where the greatest number of lives were lost on the 19

th February, 1942. We were able

to trace events that day on the harbour and compare the harbour today and on that day using archival photos taken on the day. We located the wreck of the USS Peary with the sonar and saw how clearly its stands out on the harbour bottom. Ninety one US lives were lost on the Peary on that day and few bodies recovered, so it is very much a war grave. Our students laid a wreath on the water over the site of the USS Peary wreck in remembrance of the estimated 292 people who lost their life in Darwin that day, including the 91 people on the USS Peary. Our tour coincided with the visit by the Channel 7 Sunrise morning TV crew who joined us for the excursion on the harbour. Some of their footage will be shown nationally on their special 70

th

Anniversary Bombing of Darwin coverage on Saturday 18

th and

Sunday 19th February. Thank you to

our Year 6 students who joined us for this first excursion, and to Jo Masters, Middle School teacher, for her preparation of students for this excursion.

ESSINGTON MEDICAL CENTRE Our Essington Medical Centre re-opened last week. It is open from 8 am to 5 pm. (As the year winds up, the Centre will be closed on Tuesdays in February. You will be able to access the Nightcliff Medical Centre in February if you need to see a Doctor on Tuesdays). The Medical Centre provides a great service for our families and we appreciate the support of Nightcliff Medical Centre with this project. We encourage our new families to the school, particularly our relocation families, to drop in to the Centre (near the Computer Centre, off Chapman Road) and say hello to the Receptionist. After 5 pm we encourage

our families to access the Nightcliff Medical Centre at the Nightcliff Shopping Centre. SENIOR COLLEGE - LAPTOPS Our students at the Senior College require their own laptops. The school was able to purchase a limited number of new, excellent HP laptops from the Government supplier in Queensland. These are on sale to our Senior College students for $820, the same price the school paid. Senior College students have been receiving their new laptops this week as they return their signed forms from their parents. If you would like to purchase one of these remaining laptops please let the Senior College office know as soon as possible. OUR NEW SCHOOL MINIBUS You may notice that we now have three new white school minibuses. Our third new 25 seater Mitsubishi Rosa Bus arrived from Melbourne a week ago and has seat belts and a reversing camera system for safety. We now have three new 25 seater buses and will shortly sell our fourth older blue bus. Our minibuses are important as we continue to expand our off-campus programs and opportunities for our students. We have also purchased a Ford Falcon ute to replace our old one tonne ute. Thank you to the Quinell family at Darwin Auto Wholesalers for assisting us with this purchase. PLANNING FOR OUR FETE AND FUNDRAISERS FOR 2012 As a school we need your support with fundraisers. Our School Fete, the Nightcliff Community Fair, is our largest single fundraiser in the year. We commence planning our next Fete as soon as the Fete finishes and the beginning of the school year is an important time in our Fete planning. Each class takes on a particular booth at the Fete and we are keen to finalise booths for our Fete. We need one or two parents in each class to act as the Fete Liaison person for that class. They work with parents in this class to help set up the booth and establish a roster for the afternoon. We appreciate your support with this significant fundraiser for our school. Remember, only twenty three school weeks to our 2012 School Fete, the Nightcliff Community Fair, on Saturday 18

th

August!

Early Learning Notices DROP OFF AND TRAFFIC ISSUES To assist traffic flows in the morning, we especially request your assistance with the following procedures when dropping off students in the morning: All Middle School students are

asked to access the school via the Middle School entrance from Chrisp Street.

All Transition and Junior School students are asked to access the school via the Chapman Road entrances or to use the Drop Off/Kiss and Go Zones in Rossiter Street.

Preschool (only) parents are asked to access the Library Carpark (off Rossiter Street) due to the need to assist students to the Preschool.

We especially ask that Transition, Junior and Middle School parents not enter the Library Car Park off Rossiter Street as this is needed by our Preschool parents and is not designed for drive-thru drop offs. Please use the Drop Off/Kiss and Go zones provided in the street. These are marked with green paint on the street gutter. Council parking inspectors and Traffic Police will be very active in the area in the first weeks of the term. David Cannon Principal/CEO

From the Assistant Principals EARLY LEARNING On Time to School It is important that your child arrives at school at the beginning of the day or Preschool session. Students are introduced to activities and explained classroom routines and program at the start of the day or session. Arriving on time also minimizes disruption to the rest of the students in the class. Preschool AM session: 8:15am - 11:00am Preschool PM session: 12:00pm - 2:45pm Pre-Transition: 8:15am - 12:00pm Transition: 8:15am - 2:30pm School Uniform School uniform is compulsory for all students from Pre-Transition upwards. It is essential that all students wear black shoes and white socks every day and runners and PE uniforms on the days Physical Education sessions are offered. Preschoolers are welcome to

wear our Preschool play shirts or comfortable SunSmart clothes. Toys at School Please note that toys are not allowed to be brought to school. This is to avoid any confusion over ownership. Young children are developing sharing skills and special toys pose challenges in terms of sharing at school. Toys can also be lost or damaged which can cause young children to become distressed. We encourage you to allow the children to keep them at home and explain to them why they are allowed at school. Special occasions such as Teddy Bear picnics etc. are organised in early childhood classrooms to offer the opportunity to all students to bring a special toy on a particular day to school. If you have any queries regarding this, please do not hesitate to come and see me. Preschool Music Enrichment Program We are delighted to have Caroline Anderson as our Music Teacher in the Preschool. We have had our first sessions with her this term and children have thoroughly enjoyed their music program with Miss Caroline. A major goal of this program is to engage the children's auditory sense and give them an opportunity to develop a sense of rhythm, interpretation of different styles music and contribution to the group and most importantly an enjoyable experience to encourage any possible future interest in music. Jellybeans – Sensory Movement Program Jellybeans, a Sensory Movement Program is offered once a week to all students from Preschool up to Transition. The program aims to support the development of the children‘s coordination, gross motor skills, ability to concentrate and to ‗warm up‘ ready for the busy and fun day of learning ahead. Jellybeans program provides children with the opportunity to participate in a variety of movement and coordination activities, whilst having fun along the way. Activities include those which focus on Locomotion, Dynamic and Static Balance, Body and Object Control Skills and regularly incorporate elements of Brain Gym. The children will roll, crawl and maneuver their way across soft mats and jump, hop, balance, run and move in so many other ways. Please check with the

classroom teacher to find out more about this program. Jaya Srinivas Assistant Principal Early Childhood Programs YEARS 1–12 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT A Great Start to 2012 Classrooms are now beginning to take shape with the students‘ work on display and classroom procedures and routines established. Teachers have also been busy assessing the students to determine their learning programs and individual requirements. Initial assessments are also important to ensure that all classroom activities and excursions are relevant and meaningful to the varied learning experiences that are being offered to students. If you would like to discuss any issues with your child‘s teacher, please contact them to make a mutually convenient time to meet with them. Parent Information Evenings We look forward to seeing many of the parents attending the upcoming Junior and Middle School Parent Information evenings next week. The evening is most informative, providing an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers and discuss learning programs, curriculum, classroom routines and activities pertaining to either the Junior or Middle schools. Please refer to the front of this newsletter for dates and times. Please note that a free childcare facility is available on these evenings but bookings are essential through the Front Office on 8985 0100. We also look forward to meeting our new families at our ‗New Families Welcome Night‘ at the Trailer Boat Club this Sunday 12th February 2012. Food at School We all enjoy celebrating birthdays and class parties. Please feel free to bring in cupcakes to share, but see your classroom teacher to organise a good time to do this. Cupcakes are much easier to distribute and also for the children to eat. The Essington School Darwin has a small number of students who suffer from severe nut allergies. In order to provide a safe environment for these children the School is promoting a nut-free environment. Therefore, ensure daily lunches and any treats brought into class contain no nuts.

Early Learning Notices Please see your child‘s teacher if your child has any specific food concerns. Remembering 1924: The Bombing of Darwin, February 19th 1942 On Sunday 19

th February, we

commemorate the 70th Anniversary of

the Bombing of Darwin at the Cenotaph on the Esplanade, Darwin City. On this day in 1942 Darwin was directly attacked for the first time by an external enemy. A few minutes before 10 o‘clock, a force of Japanese aircraft swept over Darwin to begin the first of two raids on that day. The commemoration aims to pay tribute to those who served on this day and in the 20 months of bombing which followed. We particularly honour those Defence people and civilians who died on our land and gave their lives so far away from their homeland in defence of ours. To commemorate this day, staff representatives will be taking approximately thirty students from Years 5—12 to represent The Essington School Darwin at the service. Natalie Hyde Assistant Principal Years 1-12

Early Learning Notices Preschool What a lovely week we have had at Preschool. It has been wonderful to see some sunshine and for the children to enjoy exploring our backyard and all of the exciting things they have found. We were very lucky to find some tadpoles living at Preschool and we are looking forward to watching them grow into frogs. On Thursday for cooking we made delicious pancakes in class. As our taste of the week is sour lemons we were able to make lemon and sugar pancakes to eat. They were delicious! Each week we ask that the Preschool children provide 3 pieces of fruit or vegetables and/or a packet of healthy biscuits to share. Please can you assist your child to place these items in the fruit bowls provided. Thank you to our classroom helpers this week: Sally, Leni‘s Mum from Preschool 1; Danielle, Lucy‘s Mum from Preschool 2; Mandy, Holly‘s Mum from Preschool 3; Danielle, Amelie‘s Mum; Michelle, Pia‘s Mum and Carolina, Stella‘s Mum all from

Preschool 4. Also thank you to Nanna Sue, Cooper‘s Grandma from England for reading a story in the library this week. A reminder that we are selling Preschool Cookbooks for $18.00 each. If you would like a copy please see Miss Rhiannon or Miss Christine. Miss Rhiannon and Miss Christine Transition T4 Lenzo We have had a very smooth start to Week 2. The children have met all their specialist teachers and have been very excited about going to art. The art teacher Miss Bignall, made some paper plate faces with the children which you can see on display in our classroom. We have also been to the computer room where Mr Lineham showed the class all the parts of a computer and the children have also been using the iPads. A reminder that all homework books are due back on Friday so I can mark them and add the new homework for the next week. Louise Lenzo

Junior School Notices Year 1A Van Bodegraven, Year 1B Pendergast and Year 1C McGilchrist Wow, what a great start to the year! This term we are focusing on sustainability and environment through looking at recycling and the effects on rainforests. We will also be learning about Narratives and will be writing our own. In Health, we are exploring friendships and the core values that are important for creating a supportive and positive environment in the classroom. Homework has now started and readers will follow next week. As a general reminder, we will be sending home Magic 100 words for the students to revise. It may be that some students have to revise previous levels for fluency. Classroom books will be sent home over the next few weeks. Could you please cover them with clear contact and return to school. It would be greatly appreciated if each student could bring in an old shirt or art smock to keep their uniforms protected during craft lessons in the classroom.

Specialist timetables have now been confirmed: 1A Miss Heidi – PE Tuesday, Library Thursday 1B Mrs Pendergast – PE Tuesday, Library Friday 1C Miss McGilchrist – PE Tuesday, Library Thursday Heidi Van Bodegraven, Kristen Pendergast and Melanie McGilchrist Year 2A Hartley, Year 2B Stewart and Year 2C Ryder Year 2 has had a very busy week. We are enjoying the start of our ‗Under The Sea‘ theme, learning about all the different Oceans in the world. The children have also been enjoying creative writing activities about the ocean. Our classes have been reading ‗The Rainbow Fish‘ and have been taking part in discussions and activities based on friendship, team work and positive behaviours. In Maths, we have been reviewing numbers to 100 and patterns. Our classroom routines are nearly all organised and our specialist lessons have started, which the children have enjoyed. A Year 2 Parent Information Evening will be held on Monday from 7pm—8pm. If you are unable to make it that evening, please see your teacher in regards to any questions. Christina Hartley, Rebecca Ryder and Sara Materazzo Year 3C Thompson Welcome back to school everyone and a warm welcome to all of our new students – Adeen, Bayley Ethan, Kyra and Tessa. You have made a great job of settling in. This term we will be learning about inventions. We have already started thinking of inventions that would help improve our own lives by doing our chores for us or helping around the house! We have had everything from chairs that help you eat, to vacuum cleaners that suck up toys from the floor and fire them into the right spot in the cupboard. We have also done some revision and have remembered that adjectives are describing words and verbs are doing words. In Maths, we have worked quite hard at ordering 2 and 3 digit numbers on number lines. We discovered in Science that there is more friction

Junior School Notices when you rub rough surfaces together and when there is more friction there is more heat. Keep up the good work 3C. Our music time has now been confirmed as 8.20am each Wednesday morning. It is really important that on these days you remember to bring your musical instrument so that you can take part fully in these lessons. Heather Thompson Year 4A Noonan We have had a busy and productive week in Year 4. We have dived into our Unit, ‗Protecting the Planet‘. We have been looking at food chains and food webs, water cycles and the differences between consumers, producers and decomposers. Displayed in our windows and inside the classroom are the students great posters showing how the water cycle works. We also started our Oral program with Weekly NEWS topics. Please remind students to check the topic listed in their homework books, think about what they are going to say and to have a short practice before their NEWS day. Students do not need to provide a written copy of their information. NEWS should be spoken not read. It was great to hear all the facts about other cities or countries the children shared this week. Marie Noonan Year 4B O’Connor This week we have begun discussion on ‗Our Environment‘. We are experimenting with bean seeds so if you notice bags hanging along the rails outside our classroom then you will know that they are our experiments in progress. We are observing and taking data on growth. The class has been enthusiastic about fundraising for an endangered Australian animal and have chosen the Tasmanian Devil. The Tasmanian Devil is at serious risk of extinction from the highly contagious ‗Devil facial tumour disease‘ and therefore funds are required to ensure the survival of the species. During Week 5, our class will be holding a raffle so that they can raise money for donation and bottles of sweets will be made up as the prizes. The class will be making posters to advertise our raffle and will be on a rostered rotation during recess and lunch to sell the tickets. It will be a great experience for the class to make

a big effort, take responsibility and develop money handling skills for this worthy cause. We will keep you informed of the end result and which organisation the money will be donated to. During Week 6 we will be performing an assembly item so we are busy putting our ideas together to see what we come up with. Selena O’Connor Year 5C Lea 5 Lea have started learning about the Bombing of Darwin this week in the lead up to the 70

th anniversary this

month (19th February). We have

looked at the lead up to the war entering our shores and will be doing some mapping activities to look at the dates each event occurred. This week in Maths we have been concentrating on Triangular and Square numbers. We have found out that it is important to know our tables for this task. Project sheets will be given to the students soon. The project sheets will comprise of two separate projects. The first will give the students a choice of project presentation and the second will involve a persuasive talk (with supporting text). I will go through the tasks with the class and have students tell me their individual choices so that they can follow a criteria sheet aimed at their decision. Next Tuesday (14

th February) at 7pm

there will be the Year 4 and 5 Information Evening. Adene Lea

Middle School Notices Year 6A Dumesny Wow! Time is flying in 6A! In our second week, we have been getting our brains working early in the morning by playing ‗Letters and Numbers‘ (the T.V. game show). Students are really enjoying this and some students even beat me at it! Also we have decreased our time for Mental Maths by five minutes already. This week in class we have been doing a variety of activities including writing a narrative, reading a novel about the Bombing of Darwin and watching a video about the war. We have also learnt about the ‗Six Thinking Hats, played some educational games and discovered how a Suduko works. Can you please make sure that your child has all the required exercise and text books needed for Year 6. Also, a water bottle and a hat is needed each day at school. All our new students have settled in well and are making new friends. The uniforms are looking superb! Even the homework is coming in early. Keep up the good work 6A. Neisha Dumesny Year 6B Dearden Hello 6B community! What an amazing and busy week we have had! Everyone is settling into the work load and timetable, as well as having enjoyed some more ‗first‘ specialist lessons of the year. These include ICT, Indonesian, Art and Library lessons. Students have been reminded that they should have all their equipment and to start their art homework. This is to collect portrait picture/s of a soldier or soldiers for Monday. In class, we are getting stuck into our units of work. In English, we are starting to write and plan our own information report on the Bombing of Darwin. This has links with both our unit and ‗Inquiry into World War Two‘ for SOSE. We have covered the timetable from 1939 – 1945 and the causes of World War Two. In Maths, we are reviewing our understanding of number and place value. We will have a revision test next Friday and students are completing work on example questions and problem solving tasks. In Science, the students are very excited to be learning about their different learning styles. They are creating a ‗Learning Profile‘ which explains each student‘s inclination towards their multiple intelligences, thinking hats and sensory preferences. Congratulations to the students who participated in the Bombing of Darwin excursion on Thursday. I know everyone enjoyed learning about the historical significance of the 19th of February 1942 and the boat ride around the waters of Darwin. All students will be enjoying this amazing experience in the upcoming weeks. Remember that I can be contacted anytime and that there is an information evening on Wednesday next week (15th February). I look forward to seeing many of you soon. Rebecca Dearden

Year 6C Morvant This week certainly has been busy in MS19. As well as

settling into the new routine of Middle School, students

have been learning new study habits, research skills and

are becoming more organized with their time management.

All students are commended for their terrific effort and an

enthusiastic start to the year. We have continued to study

World War II and The Bombing of Darwin in SOSE and an

impressive array of information has been uncovered in

student research. Some students are looking at their family

tree and discovering some very interesting facts about their

relatives.

Some Year 6 students went on the Bombing of Darwin

Harbour cruise on Friday, which all Year 6 classes will be

participating in over the following weeks. Our class

displayed some incredible creative talent by choosing

foliage and flowers to create a memorial wreath which was

placed on the site of the USS Peary ship, where 91 people

lost their lives. Thanks to all students who assisted with the

wreath and to Ms Masters for overseeing the wreath

building. Both MS19 and MS20 smelt like a florist shop on

Friday which was just delightful!

We have started to study the Human Brain in Science and

have been looking at Edward De Bono‘s theory of 6

Thinking Hats. Students have enjoyed working in groups to

discuss different types of thinking and applying their

findings to different situations.

Well done to students who have worked hard with

homework and have handed in all tasks last week. The

study load does increase in Middle School, so it is fantastic

to see so many students and parents using the Student

Diary to assist with study planning.

Please remember to bring a water bottle to class each day

as it is important to rehydrate and to feed our brains. It is

also important to rest up over the weekend so that you are

fresh for a new week.

I look forward to seeing you next week at our Parent

Information night, Wednesday 15th February (7—8pm).

Donna Morvant

Year 6/7D Connor Congratulations to all of the students in 6/7D who have

settled in extremely well to the new routines and structure

of the Middle School. It is a very exciting time for our

students and they are handling the change with aplomb.

We welcome Ms Jo Masters to Year 6/7D. Ms Masters will

be teaching English and Studies of Society and

Environment (SOSE). This is in line with our Year 7 model

where each subject area is taught by a specialist teacher.

The students are thriving in their new environment and are

looking forward to the challenges presented.

In Science this term we are going to be studying the brain.

To begin with we are looking at different types of ‗thinking

tools‘ that can help us become better thinkers. There are

Middle School Report many different theories on how thinking can be described,

organized and stimulated. To begin with we have been

looking at De Bono‘s Thinking Hats. These hats can help

us to use different types of thinking when approaching

problems. In this way we can come up with solutions that

are balanced and well thought through.

Remember that students need to wear their Sports Uniform

for P.E on Thursday. Students must always have a hat, a

drink bottle at school and a piece of fruit to eat during our

‗fruit break‘.

Email is a great way to keep in contact so please drop me

a line on [email protected].

Year 7B Kidd

Welcome back to the new school year and an especially

warm welcome to Alecsandria Apresto, Rhys Davenport,

Jacquelyn Sedunary and Gabriella Sharp who have joined

our class.

I will be teaching English in Year 7 and will also be the

homeroom teacher for 7B. Our room is MS2.

Our busy schedule has already begun in English with our

novel study The Silver Sword, poetry writing about The

Bombing Of Darwin, and a unit of work entitled Me, Myself

and I all well under way. We have also been completing

our ―Time Capsules‖ which will be sealed up and not

opened until Week 9 of Term 4. We will see how many

things have changed and how many of our expectations

and goals have become a reality by the end of the year.

An English sheet will be given out on Mondays listing the

work that will be covered for the week. The same

information will be listed on the school website. Students

are required to make maximum use of their diaries to assist

in organizing homework schedules in order for all work to

be completed by the due dates. Parents should sign diaries

once a week.

If any parents would like to contact me or ask any

questions, please email me on

[email protected].

Middle School Report Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE)

All of our SOSE classes are studying The Bombing Of

Darwin as part of our History Course this year. As it is the

anniversary next week we have started the year with this

topic across all year levels. Our Year 6 students are very

excited today as they are the first group to go on The

Bombing of Darwin Boat Tour. I am sure we will have some

photos to share in the Bulletin next week.

Electives: Nearly Finalized The process of allocating electives for our Year 8 and Year

9 students is nearly finalized. After an initial allocation

through our new Timetabling Program, we have had

individual interviews with students to check allocations and

ensure a good balance of Elective Subjects. All students

have been asked to copy their allocations into their Diary.

It would be a great idea to discuss allocations with your

children to ensure you are also happy with their overall

programs. If there are any concerns please ask the

students to pop in to see me at recess to discuss

possibilities. We are trying to develop self-responsibility

with our older Middle School students in Year 8 and Year 9

and this is another aspect of this goal.

Homework Centre: Homework Centre started this

week. Homework Centre operates from 2:45pm until 3:30pm

every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon.

This is every day except Wednesday as this is Staff

Meeting Day.

Homework Centre is open to all MS Students (Year 6 to

Year 9), and will be held in MS9 at present. Whilst there is

an open invitation to attend, please email Roisin McCann

at [email protected] should you wish

your child to attend on any particular day.

Diaries It has been terrific to see that most students have been

utilizing their diaries from Day 1 this year. In one Year 9

class, every single student has been using their diary

effectively during Week 1 and Week 2. Congratulations to

9A!

As mentioned before, diaries are an important study and

organisation device. Parents also are encouraged to use

this as a convenient method of ongoing communication

with your children‘s teachers.

Communication Teachers have been contacting parents to develop the

most convenient lines of communication. Please work

through Subject and Homeroom teachers in the first

instance. If the problem cannot be solved through this

communication, please contact myself or one of the MS

Management Team by email or through the MS Office,

phone 8985 0020. My email address is

[email protected].

Teachers can be contacted through emailing either

[email protected] or using the standard

address format of

[email protected].

I look forward to meeting you at the Parent Information

Evenings next week.

Student Achievement and Involvement Report ―Slick and Shmick‖ We are running our ―Slick and Shmick‖ competition again

this term for our best dressed class. This week has been

our first week of competition and our classes are looking

great! Homeroom teachers give out 50 points during homeroom if all students are in correct uniform and then

each class teacher can give out 10 points if everyone has

their shirts tucked in and ties correctly worn for the entire

lesson. There are also spot checks by a teacher. This week Mr Connor (Year 6/7 Coordinator) had the honour and was

very impressed with our students and also the tidiness of

the rooms. Classes with a tidy room gained a bonus 50

points!

Weekly winners will be announced in Assembly each

Friday. The highest scoring class for the Year 6/7 and the

Year 8/9 category respectively, will win a trophy of a framed Essington shirt to display in their classroom for the

term.

Student Representative Council In the coming weeks students will start getting information

about Student Representative Council elections and

Student Representative Council will start planning and running events. If you are interested in the Student

Representative Council but do not know much about it or

what it does, please speak to Mrs Harvey. Mrs Harvey will

be overseeing the Year 8/9 Student Representative Council this year or Mr Connor who will be overseeing the

Year 6/7 Student Representative Council. Being an

Student Representative Council member is a great

opportunity to get to know students of different year levels, work with people that you may not usually work with and

learn new leadership, organization and public speaking

skills. It is also a great way to help out your peers, school

and community! From time to time we seek the involvement of students who are not Student

Representative Council members, so if you do not get

elected you can still be involved. Come and speak to Mrs

Harvey or Mr Connor if you are interested.

Internet Safety Personal Development classes have been focusing on

Internet Safety this week: how to safely use social pages, email and the use of chat rooms. What some of the

students have learnt has seen them heading home to

change their privacy settings and defriend anyone that they

are not friends with in real life! As adults, it is sometimes easier to think, ―leave it up to the kids, after all they know

how to use computers better than most of us‖. However,

even though they can hit a few buttons and achieve

something that may take us half an hour, they do not have the life skills to identify some of the dangers that are lurking

for them on the internet. The following link is a fantastic

resource for parents and teachers who wish to generate discussion with teenagers about internet safety or learn

about safe and unsafe internet usage themselves, so they

can monitor their children: http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/.

Year 7—9 students will be further investigating the topics of

internet safety, cyberbullying and internet stalking over the next few weeks. Please contact Allison Harvey on Phone:

8985 0164 if you have any questions or concerns regarding

this topic.

Senior College Report It has been amazing to see the way all of our students have settled into their academic programs. All students

should have a current timetable. Spare copies are kept at

the Senior College office.

Please feel free to contact your child‘s Mentor or Subject

Teacher on Phone: 8946 6821.

Student Timetables All students have been issued with their timetables. The

timetable operates on the same seven period time table as

the Middle School. Each student has been allocated seven blocks of subjects that they complete throughout the week.

Due to increased demand we are now offering Stage One

(Year 11) Biology, Chemistry and Physics classes from

2.45 pm to 3.30 pm each day.

Student ID Cards All second and third year students have completed their

enrolment forms for Academic Literacies and have their new 2012 Student ID. All first year students will be issued

their cards once they have completed their VETIS

enrolment forms. We are aiming at getting these finalized

within the next few weeks.

Access to Charles Darwin Internet All students have been issued with an Acceptable Usage

Policy and Application Form for parents to sign. This allows their children to access the internet and Charles Darwin

University website. This is required for their academic

studies. Can you please ensure the form is returned to the

Senior College Office ASAP.

VETIS (CERT 2 and 3 Vocational Education Training in Schools) Our Hospitality and Agriculture students began their courses this week. The Business course will begin next Monday. Business and Enterprise: A New Subject on Offer in 2012 at The Senior College Business and Enterprise is a new subject being offered to Essington senior students. There is now the opportunity to enrol in and study Stage 1 (Year 11) or Stage 2 (Year 12)Business and Enterprise. Business and Enterprise is considered to be an academic subject and contributes towards the students‘ NTCET (Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training). The subject is an ideal choice for students who are interested in furthering their studies through Undergraduate Law, International Studies, Commerce, Business, Accounting, Tourism and many others. The subject focuses on learning about the successful management of business and enterprise issues in personal business and the related local, national and global social contexts. Students gain an understanding of business operations and practice, develop an awareness of financial, and technological skills, participate in planning, developing, and controlling business activities, and evaluate decisions on business practices. They have the opportunity to reflect on current issues in business and enterprise, and to make informed decisions. There are a variety of topics covered across the year such as Marketing, Financial Planning and Management, Business and Enterprise in Practice, People, Business and Work and Business and the Global Environment. If you would like any more information or to discuss the possibility of enrolling in the subject, please contact me via my email [email protected] Student Assessment Items These need to be handed in at the Senior College Office and dated. Senior College assessment dates/homework can be found on the Senior College Homework website. If you have any questions regarding assessment dates or homework please make contact with the appropriate teacher by phone on 8946 6821 or by email [email protected]. Peter Moore Acting Senior College Coordinator Welcome back to all of our returning and new students for 2012. This year is shaping up to be a very exciting one with all the trips and opportunities on offer at The Senior College. Over the past two years we have seen over one hundred Dukes Awards attained by our students and we are looking to add to that tally this year. Throughout the year students will be provided with the opportunity to participate in expeditions, varying from local bushwalks to interstate and international tours. One of the focuses this year is to provide our students with experiences that allow them to step outside their comfort zone and grow mentally,

socially and physically. It is important to cater to everyone‘s needs as the award is an individual one, molded around the participant. If any student is struggling to choose a service, fitness or skill please make contact with Mr Theiber at The Senior College. Over the coming weeks students will be involved in selecting their College leaders for 2012. These elections will take place during mentor group and assembly. I hope that all students who are interested in becoming a college leader nominate themselves and wish all students the best of luck. ZEN SUI MARTIAL ARTS In 2012 Zen Sui Martial Arts will begin classes for children at The

Essington School Darwin. Zen Sui will be taught by Adam Gulla

(Essington Physical Education Teacher).

Children will learn the fundamentals of martial arts and self defense. The program will keep them physically fit and help with the benefits of good

behaviour, teamwork, good manners, patience and trying their best. The

program covers valuable lessons on bullying and stranger danger. Children learn that consistent

attendance creates perseverance and the ability to over come

difficulties. Developing an ―I CAN‖ attitude and having it reinforced in class, opens the door to the gift of self esteem, confidence and self

respect that will stay with your child for life. Zen Sui represents an

evolving way of practicing Martial Arts whilst holding onto traditional

values.
