From The Principal NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF SCHOOL MUSIC: CONGRATULATIONS TO HENRY BEALE (YEAR 9) AND OUR CHOIR Following on from the recent participation of twenty of our students in the choir of Oz Opera‟s La Bohemie, our talented singers have again been busy today celebrating National “Count Us In” Performance Day. Merrilyn Watson, our Music teacher, and our Middle School Choir today performed at Parliament House as part of this initiative. “Count Us In” Day involves half a million students and teachers from around Australia joining in at the same time to sing the same song. This initiative was introduced by the Australian Government in 2007 to celebrate the value of music education to students‟ development. This year we are honoured to have one of our students, Henry Beale (Year 9), as one of the three co-writers of the song selected to be performed by all students around Australia. Henry was one of nine students across Australia selected to attend a writer‟s workshop in Sydney in May this year. Henry and two other students composed a song, Come Play Your Part, at this workshop and it was selected to be sung around Australia for the “Count Us In” Performance. Today Henry sang this song live on the steps of Sydney Opera House as part of this national celebration. An ABC TV crew was here on Tuesday to interview Henry as part of their preparation for reporting on this event. On Friday morning 10 th September Henry will be singing his song, accompanied by The Essington School Band and The Essington School Choir, at a Special “Count Us In” Assemblies for Junior School and Middle School students. Congratulations to Henry on being selected for this significant national school music event. We look forward to hearing Henry perform his song on Friday 10 th September. CELEBRATING ASIA IN SCHOOLS WEEK At tomorrow‟s Assembly we are pleased to be highlighting modern Indian culture with two excellent performers performing some Bollywood themed Indian dances. Our Junior School Ambassador for Malaysia will also tell us about Malaysia‟s National Day, celebrated this week. Prizes will also be presented to winner students in Years 2, 3 and 4 who participated in the Asian Placemat Competition organised by our Junior School Studies of Asia Coordinator, Adene Lea, and our Indonesian teacher, Bev Wevill. You will also find in this week‟s Bulletin some information about the Japanese flag, currently flying (along with the Australian and Pakistan flags) in front of our International Studies Centre. From the Assistant Principals EARLY LEARNING Essington Early Childhood Forum – ‘Writing’ in Early Years’ Each term an Early Childhood Forum is organised on a topic of interest to parents and staff. This term our Essington Early Childhood Forum focused on the topic „Writing in Early Years‟. The session was facilitated by Ms Sophie Roxburgh former Pre-Transition Teacher at The Essington School Darwin and Mrs. Rhiannon Hale, our current Preschool Coordinator and Preschool Teacher. The session was very informative and we received excellent feedback. If you would like a handout of the power point presentation please see the Front Office. A pamphlet on „Writing In Early Years‟ is also available from the Front Office. I want to sincerely thank Sophie Roxburgh who came to Darwin from Katherine to present this session. A big thank you also goes to Rhiannon Hale. Planning is already underway for the next early childhood forum in Term 4. Details will be sent out early next term. Preschool Disco Preschool staff and parents are gearing up for a Preschool Disco which promises to be great fun for all our Preschoolers and their siblings. Date: Tuesday 7

th September, 2010

Time: 5:00-6:30pm Venue: Preschool Face painting, balloon decorating, making fairy bread and dancing are just some of the fun activities planned for this evening. This is an important fundraiser for the Preschool and we hope to see you all at the event. For more information please contact one of Preschool staff on Phone: 8985 0112. Sign in/Sign out Procedure As you know sign in /sign out sheets are located at the entrance of each classroom. It is important to sign this each and every day as you drop off and pick up your child. If someone other than yourself is picking up your child you need to let us know in writing in the comment‟s section so we are fully aware of any alterations in pick up arrangements. If you have nominated someone else other than the immediate family members, Preschool staff will request this person to present

proof of identity to ensure your child is being picked up by the correct person at dismissal time. Safety of our children is of paramount importance to us and we appreciate your support and understanding with this procedure. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to come and see me. Happy Father’s Day! Jaya Srinivas Assistant Principal Early Childhood Programs JUNIOR/MIDDLE SCHOOL The dominant game during recess and lunch has now been Soccer due to our House Competitions. Thank you Mr Beard for organising this and thank you to our Junior Sports Captains Liam Griffen, Jessica O‟Brien, Thomas Sweeney, Chloe Purvis, Alessandro Spadaccini, Jessica McMilan, Monty Hill, Tamika O‟Brien, Ben Shenton, Kirra Reynolds, Max Jagla, Isabella Harding and Jackson Phillips for your assistance also. The students have been learning about the rules and strategies of the game. Congratulations to a small group of students in Years 3, 4 and 5 who solved a problem with their recess time game by asking Mr Beard to borrow some cones so more smaller groups with not so many students can play safely on the oval with cones for goals. The Year 8 and Year 9 Middle School students sat the Rio Tinto Big Science Competition Wednesday 1st September. Our students do use entry into these competitions as part of their profiles and CVs developed during their Personal Learning Plan or PLP subject. The certificates gained are usually kept and placed with all their certificates and references. It was great to be present when the ABC interviewed one of our Middle School Music students Henry Beale on Tuesday. Henry is a regular performer at our Middle School Assemblies. Henry won the opportunity to participate in Australia‟s biggest school music initiative, Count Us In. At some point in the near future the ABC will run a feature on Henry, and the music initiative and we will endeavour to let people know when this may occur. In the meantime, you

can find out more of the story and hear the song at the website http://www.musiccountusin.org.au. If you search the website you can also find a web clip with an Essington Music Teacher conducting students singing. It is also possible that there will be a video of the linkup performance on there soon. Helen Dunchue Acting Assistant Principal Years 1-5

Early Learning Notices We have been looking at the last group of sounds in Jolly Phonics. We are excited to start looking at blended sounds next week! In Mathematics we have been focusing on numbers and 2D shapes and have made wonderful house collages to hang in our classroom. We have continued on with our themes also, looking at dairy products in Health, water in SOSE, and bees and worms in Science. A reminder that swimming continues this week and that students need to come in their bathers if possible. Please make sure EVERYTHING is labelled! Due to swimming our library time was cancelled this week but will go ahead in Week 8 at an earlier time. Katie Dewing Transition T1 Lenzo What a sporty week we have had! Our swimming programme splashed off to a great start. Well done for remembering the pool rules, and for fantastic listening and good behaviour at the pool. On Tuesday we had our House Soccer competition and everyone played really well. Olivia's Mum came in to help us with our spider craft this week....thank you! We made some egg carton spiders to go on our 3D effect coat hanger webs. This was messy but fun! Next week we are learning about beetles. In Maths we will be going over “o'clock” times. Louise Lenzo Transition T2 Thomson We have been working very hard this week on the sounds for the week: “l”, “f”, “b”, “it” and the “ed” word family. This week we are beginning to look at money and especially coins. We will be recognising our Australian coins and what animal is on each coin. This week in our mini beast lesson we discovered some interesting things about grasshoppers. We could not believe just how far they can jump. Swimming has started this week and will continue next week. Please

remember that we go each day except Friday. PE is still on Thursday however we will be missing Library for the next two weeks. Tanya Thomson Transition T4 Cendo We have had a very busy first week at swimming. The children are enjoying the time out of the classroom and down at the pool. This week we have been learning about recycling. We have looked at the different types of things that we could recycle, and have discussed what type of natural things we waste when we do not recycle. In Maths we have been doing a lot of work on Time. We have been looking at analogue and digital clocks and have been learning about “o‟clock” and “half past”. We have also been playing Time Bingo which is one of our favourite class games. Marijana Cendo

Junior School Notices Year 1A McDonald, Year 1B Blokland and Year 1C Chiera Here we are at Week 7! It has been a busy start to the week with swimming lessons starting. The children have enjoyed it so far. They have, however, also equally enjoyed getting changed back into their warm clothes! Well done to all our students for remembering to bring all your swimming gear, and for being organised on time! This week, we have started our own reports about our chosen NT animal. There is a lot of work to be done in getting our information before we write up our good copy. We look forward to our finished products! We also had our House Soccer competition on Wednesday. The children all had a great time! They all worked hard together in their teams to try their best and show good sportsmanship. Just a reminder that all Wombat Stew notes need to be returned. If your child will not be attending, please let your

teacher know ASAP as seating is very limited and high in demand. Happy Father‟s Day to all our Dads. We hope you have a fun and very spoilt day! Lisa McDonald, Cristina Chiera and Heidi Stitt Year 2A Decurtins We have been very busy this week with our swimming lessons taking up most of our morning sessions. The children have done a terrific job getting themselves organized both before and after our swimming lessons. I have not had to do up a single button and have only been needed to tie up a few shoe laces! Great work everyone. Last week we made some yummy „Lemonade Scones‟. The scones were light and fluffy and tasted delicious when topped with jam and cream. We would like to thank Despina (Natasha‟s Mum) for helping us with this activity and Lucy (Ella‟s Mum) for lending us her cake tins. While the scones were cooking the children wrote some great procedures detailing how they made them. During some of our literacy sessions we have been focussing on

Early Learning Notices THE INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

CENTRE: JAPANESE FLAG You will notice that we are currently flying two flags with our Australian

flag at the International Studies Centre. In last week‟s Weekly Bulletin we described the Pakistan flag. This

week we provide some information on the Japanese flag. The Japanese flag has been flying since the visit by our

sister school students from Tamagawa University School, Tokyo,

early this term.

Japan‟s national flag is called the “Hi-no-maru” or Sun Disc, and features a red sun on a plain white field. It is a visualization of the country‟s name,

“Land Of The Rising Sun”. According to legend, the sun was ancestor of the imperial dynasty, having been

used by the Japanese emperors for hundreds of years. It was first used as a national flag as recently as 1860, on

a visit to the United States by a diplomatic delegation. The flag

became the National Flag following the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

Junior School Notices Persuasive writing. The children are really enjoying this new text type and have been able to put forward a variety of strong arguments for a number of statements. I have been very impressed with their first attempts at this new genre. Well done everyone. Please remember that swimming continues next week. Leonie Decurtins Year 2C Huggett Busy days in 2C! This week we began our swimming program and the students are really enjoying starting their day with a refreshing dip! Last week we made a delicious Chocolate Mousse for our Masterchef Maths program and worked out how to adjust the quantity of ingredients to feed twenty-four people instead of six! The mousse turned out to be delicious and was a winner with all the class! We also began our research into the Gold Rush as a significant time in Australian history, and made our own precious gold nuggets! In Week 9 we will go on an excursion to the Chinese Museum where we will learn more about some of the people who came to the Northern Territory to strike it rich in the gold fields. Cathy Huggett Year 3A Thompson Well done at the Fete everyone. Thanks to all the Mums and Dads who came to help out on the Sponge Throw Stall. Thanks to all the children from my class and Year 6 in the Middle School who happily volunteered to have wet sponges thrown at them. A special thank you to Lee Zeroni for stepping up to the plate and organising us all. We have had a great couple of weeks of swimming and water safety lessons. The water wasn‟t TOO cold and we certainly learnt some new skills! We also all did our best in the House Soccer competition which was held on Tuesday. Congratulations to everyone on their homework task for the last couple of weeks - we have some really well thought out healthy, eating board

games in the classroom and have loved playing them. Miss T is looking forward to seeing all the Asian menus this week. Mmmm. Finally, it is really exciting to see everyone improving in our 5 minute Maths drill... every single person in the class has managed to either improve their time, the number of questions they answer correctly, or the number of questions they can answer in five minutes. Well done! Heather Thompson Year 3B Gibbs We have enjoyed a busy past two weeks in Year 3 Gibbs. The Fete Stall was a fantastic success. Thank you to all the parents who helped out on the day and leading up to the Fete. You are stars! The children were still searching for treasure tokens on Monday. Last week, we had a visit from Simon's Mum, Jane. She helped the children create some beautiful collages depicting bowls of fruit. They are very effective. We also had Katelyn's Mum, Jess, come in with some old teeth to conduct experiments. We are soaking the teeth in milk, coke, water and orange juice for a week. We are observing the teeth each day and we are looking forward to discovering what happens to them in the different liquids. In Maths we have been focusing on Time. We are learning to tell the time in 5 minute intervals using analogue and digital clocks. We have also been practising our Mental Maths and revising our four times tables. In English we have been developing our comprehension skills through the use of the strategy 'fact or opinion'. Distinguishing between facts and opinions helps us to become critical readers. The comprehension activities have helped us to read texts with a questioning attitude and critically judge and evaluate what we are reading. In our advertising focus in SOSE, we have been exploring how advertisers love to use opinions more than facts. I hope you all enjoy Father's Day on Sunday! Emily Gibbs

Year 4A Noonan This week we were back into our normal routine after our two weeks of swimming. In our Literacy Centres we read a play called “Don't Wake The Mummy”. We answered comprehension questions, then we completed editing activities about The Trojan Horse. We also continued looking at opinion and persuasive writing ideas in our Grammar lesson. In our theme, Ancient Civilisations, we began looking at The Egyptians. We drew and painted a pharaoh's mask. We used Egyptian measures such as cubit, palm and span in our Maths lesson. We constructed 3D pyramids and other shapes to make buildings, and had a 'Magic Lesson' on Egypt on the computers. We had to read lots of information and complete challenges. Do not forget the Ancient Civilisation Board Game projects are due next week. It is great to see more students completing their homework tasks more regularly. Keep up the hard work. Marie Noonan

Middle School Report

MIDDLE SCHOOL REPORT This is a very busy time for all Middle School teachers and students as Interim Reports are written, and preparation is made for Parent Teacher discussions coming up in the next two weeks (Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th September). We look forward to seeing you at Parent Teacher discussions. We have welcomed Ms Kellie-Ann Headifen to Essington this term. Kellie-Ann is our Mathematics teacher for 8B, 8C and 9C classes. Kellie-Anne is also our Homework Centre supervisor. We are all very happy to have Kellie-Anne with us. She comes from New Zealand where she worked in a number of schools on both the North and South Islands. Kelli-Anne is finding our Darwin weather a little challenging but is enjoying her time here with the Essington Students.

You are reminded that the Homework Centre for students in Years 8 to 10 is open from 2.45 to 3.30pm each afternoon from Monday to Thursday in MS1. Kellie-Anne is on hand to offer student assistance, as are a number of teachers who are assisting students with completing some of their special work at the moment. This week I would like to showcase some of our very talented Year 6 students – Mr Connor‟s Year 6A. As sometimes occurs, Mr Connor was needed at the Office and I was fortunate to be able to release him from his class for a short time at the end of last week. Thinking „on the run‟ I asked Mr Connor‟s students to write „Once Upon a time‟ on a piece of paper, and then use exactly 10 words that would start an interesting story. When completed, each student was asked to pass their „story starter‟ to their neighbor, and that student was asked to continue the story using exactly 9 words. Passing their piece of paper to the neighbor again, the students then had to continue the story using exactly 8 words. And this continued until there was exactly one word needed to finish the story. They did such a great job with this activity and enjoyed doing it so much, that they all had another try, and here are some of their very clever results! Thanks to the students of Year 6A who obviously have very vivid imaginations. This might be something you would like to try with some friends. We are very excited that the second edition of the Middle School Science magazine, ‘Essence’, is almost ready for

publishing. Please be on the lookout for a „magical‟ edition of this publication soon to be headed your way. Lyn Hollow Head of Middle School

necessity! We also created a story board on the journey of a refugee in comic life during ICT and wrote a dialogue. In Science we have been learning about the different types of graphs. In groups the students did the “bouncing ball” experiment where they had to measure, graph and analyze their data. The class also discussed the importance of prioritizing their homework as well as consistently completing homework and having their diaries signed. All students were relieved with the suggestion of having homework handed in on a Monday instead of Friday. Keep up the good work 6B! Leanne Bakker Year 6C Morvant It has been a very busy time in 6C and in the school in general. Many thanks to all our families who assisted with the Fete. We certainly had a busy stall and the help is very much appreciated. In class, we have been researching Aid agencies which help refugees, and beginning an Oral Report on a chosen Asian country. We will be listening to these presentations next week – with either a poster or a PowerPoint slide show. Your child should be working on this at home and rehearsing with a captive audience. Our poetry books were due in this week. I have been impressed with the tremendous effort some of the students have taken with their work. Thanks to the parents and family members for taking the time to read the books and to write some comments in the critique area. Report writing is underway, and parent/teacher interviews are approaching quickly. These take place in Week 9 of this term. Thanks to the students who have been making a great effort to hand in their diaries signed – the amount of homework being handed in has increased, and all students have made an effort to be more consistent with study patterns. Well done! Please remember to have a hat every day, not just on sport day. I look forward to touching base with you about your child. Donna Morvant Year 7A Hogg Students completed their Area, Volume and Capacity test this week and we are now studying Patterns and Algebra. Well done to all the students who worked extremely well throughout the last five weeks. Students received their second Mathematics Assignment. The assignment promises to be challenging and fun. It is based around the concept of length, area, volume and capacity and it requires students to design a house floor plan. This assignment is designed for the students to see how Mathematics is used in real life. With only four weeks until the end of Term 3. It is important that all students continue to work diligently and complete all assigned homework and assignments. Thank you to all the

parents who have been working with their children to assist with this process. Congratulations to Amberlyn Pratt and Monique Joyce for their Merit Award they received at last week‟s Middle School Assembly. Daniel Hogg Year 7C Tapp A huge thank you all of my fabulous parents who assisted on the Crazy Hair Stall at the Fete. It was terrific to see so many 7C students spray painting everyone‟s hair with bright colours. Unfortunately we had to close up shop early because we ran out of spray paint. This week students in 7A and 7B have presented interesting, and quite humorous, skits of our novel, „Holes‟. We have also celebrated the end of our novel study questions by watching the DVD. They have also submitted and received their grades for their Who‟s Who Poster/Presentation. There was some outstanding work produced and the students should be congratulated for their efforts. Students are also reminded to continue to work on their Holes Mapping assignment which is due Monday, Week 10. In 7C and 7D we are still busily working on a class skit of Johnny Cade‟s murder trial. Due to absences in both classes the script is not quite finished and it will probably be another week or two before we can complete this task. These students have also been working on their Trial by Jury persuasive writing task. Published pieces are due on Monday, Week 8. Renee Tapp

CAREER CORNER – SPECIALIST AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING

A career as an automotive mechanic is a favourite with young people interested in a wide range of motor cars. But have you ever wondered about a career in motor mechanics where the motor cars are not your everyday vehicle – in fact they may well be vehicles of which we see very few on our roads everyday! The major companies marketing international vehicles all run Automotive Apprenticeships aligned to their vehicle companies. In Australia, a lot of the programs run out of New South Wales. For example, joining the Volvo Modern Apprenticeship Program will see you gain Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology and Volvo Service Technician Status. Other companies involved in this initiative include Audi, Subaru, Land Rover, Mazda, Jaguar, and Volkswagon. The Apprenticeship programs are designed to train and develop Apprentices to keep pace with advancing technology and high levels of customer service. If you are interested in finding out more information on these specialised training programs the following web site is available: www.vantageautomotive.com

General Notices Music News Our cake stalls continue to be very popular. This week it is the turn of students of Anissa Hogbin and David Carey. Last Friday we raised $132.00 and we appreciate the support of children and parents. Please remind your child to collect the container afterwards.

We were also delighted to be presented with a cheque for $100 by Darwin South Rotary Club. Mr Douglas Gorry, Club President, attend our Assembly last Friday and filled in a further two notes on our keyboard. Community support such as this is always gratefully received. His wife Marietta, also a member of Darwin South Rotary Club was present also.

Henry Beale will fly to Sydney on Wednesday to take part in the „Music Count Us In‟ event on Thursday 2nd September, 2010 on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. He will be singing with the many school children there and also be involved in media presentations. Watch it on the news in the night or go to: www.musicplayforlife.org. We congratulate Henry on this wonderful achievement.

We have postponed our band and choir performance of this song until Henry is able to play with us which will be Friday 10th September. We hope you will be able to attend this Assembly.

Our Middle School Choir will be singing this song at Parliament House this Thursday 2nd September along with many other schools. As students in these choirs are representing the school, we ask you to be aware that full and correct school uniform needs to be worn in order to attend. This includes white socks and all black shoes with no hair ornaments other than black hair ties. Thank you to Merrilyn Watson for preparing the students.

It is an exciting time for music teachers and students through Australia as we all combine in a single event commemorating music!

Junior School Ambassador for Malaysia On Thursday 31st August 1957, Malaysia gained its independence from the United Kingdom. Malaysians celebrated it this week on Tuesday. They display public performances at Independence Square. The whole city of Kuala Lumpur is decorated with coloured lights and other decorations. The independence of Malaysia is different from that of other countries because it was a peaceful independence attained by holding talks with the British.

Malaysia is a multicultural country that features people of different religions, countries and races which live in a peaceful atmosphere.

Kanga 8’s Cricket On Thursday 26th August, I took a group of young boys from Year 5 and 6 to Marrara Cricket Ground for a Kanga 8‟s competition. When we arrived at the oval the other school was running a little late, so the boys had a practice in the nets until the Victorian Bushrangers Cricket team asked them to help field while they had batting practice. For 30 minutes the boys had the opportunity to field while Brad Hodge and David Hussey had a bat. Marrara Christian School arrived and boys started the competition. They played 3 games, winning all 3 convincingly. After the games had finished eight Victorian Bushranger Cricketers came over and talked to the students and played a couple of games. They also signed autographs

and had photos with all the students and teachers. It was a very fun day, with all the boys representing our school well. Thank you to NT Cricket for organizing this day and to the Victorian Bushrangers for giving up their time to meet and mingle with our students.

Duke of Edinburgh Notices As the Term 3 break is quickly approaching students are encouraged to start to get their assessor‟s to sign them of in their relevant areas. To date we have approximately 45 children who have completed or will complete their skill, service, physical recreation by the end of Term 3. If any participant is unsure as to how to add an assessor, please go and see Mr Theiber and he will assist you in this matter.

This week we are proud to announce that our second Year 9 student has achieved their Bronze Award, Luigi DeRubeis. For his skill Luigi has dedicated many hours to learning Italian, making great progress over the last six months. For his physical recreation Luigi has completed the fitness training associated with the Junior Police Rangers and for his service he has also given up his time to help mentor some of the younger kids at the Junior Police Rangers. Everyone here at the Essington School would like to congratulate Luigi on his efforts this year and we wish him the best of luck on completing his Silver Award.

Once again students are encouraged to keep up the good work as consistency is the key to achieving the Award. There are only fourteen schooling weeks left in the year so if any participant has not yet started or finished one of their sections they must start to do so now so they can finish by the end of the year. Enjoy the rest of the week participants, keep working hard and remember to log those hours. Shaun Theiber Head of Outdoor Education Duke of Edinburgh Award Coordinator
