    tion to our board of directors.Dan Sharp is the President of

    tion building.Their communica-tions work and writing hasearned more than 20 industryawards, while winning dozensof victories in both publicaffairs and political campaigns.

    A Solano County native, Danwas raised on a walnut orchardin Gordon Valley.His careerhighlights include serving asChief of Staff for then-UnitedStates Congressman Doug Ose,as a senior advisor to Californiastate Senator MauriceJohannessen, as an aide to now-Congressman Tom McClintock,as a public policy research asso-ciate at the Claremont Institute,and as a consultant for dozensof political campaigns in theWestern United States.

    Following his work in Congress,he served Of Counsel to VanScoyoc Associates,Washington,D.C.s largest independentGovernment Relations firm.

    Dan is the former Chairmanof the Vacaville PlanningCommission, a member of theAdvisory Board for the SalvationArmy and KROC Center and for-merly served on the ComstocksBusiness Magazine EditorialBoard.

    Dan and his wife,Amy, met atSacramento State while studyinggovernment.They live inVacaville with their sons, Zackand Jakob, who attend VacavilleChristian High School.

    To better understandways to prevent cancer,the American CancerSociety is recruiting men

    and women across the UnitedStates and Puerto Rico for alandmark new research study

    Cancer Prevention Study-3(CPS-3).The NorthBay CancerCenter has agreed to assist inthe effort, according to BradGould, director, service linedevelopment oncology andcardiovascular services.

    Past CPC-3 studies haveenabled researchers to studyindividuals and understand howcancer develops in a popula-tion, identify causes of cancerand ultimately, learn how to pre-vent i t. CPS s tudies have made

    major contributions to publichealth, such as linkage betweentobacco use and cancer.Participating in the study offersothers a chance to play a role inshaping the future of cancercontrol.

    Enrollment of Solano Countyresidents will be held at theGreen Valley AdministrationCenter between 10 a.m.and2 p.m. on November 7, 2013.NorthBay is one of five sitesthroughout the county to host

    enrollments.Individuals may choose toparticipate if they are willing tomake a long-term commitmentto the study (which involvescompleting follow-up surveysperiodically over the next 20-30

    years), are between the ages of30 and 65, and have never beendiagnosed with cancer.

    NorthBay employees andtheir friends and families are alsoencouraged to consider partici-pating in the study, Brad noted.

    orthBay Adult Day Center staffershope to assemble a large team ofparticipants for the Alzheimer

    Associations Walk to End

    Alzheimer fundraising event,to be held onOct.26 in Suisun City.The more moneyNorthBay team raises, the more funds willbe returned to the Adult Day Center to helpits program participants and their families,

    says Sandy Perez,manager of the Adult DayCenter.

    The Alzheimer Association has promisedto send back as much as 50 percent of all

    funds collected by any team who raisesmore than $4,999 during the event.If theteam surpasses that amount, 60 percent ofall funds will come right back to the organi-zation.It would be really good for us to get

    those funds, says Perez.We could usethem for scholarships for our families, andin so many other ways.

    The Solano County Walk to End

    Alzheimers event, set for Saturday, Oct. 26at Harbor Plaza in Suisun City,begins withan 8:30 a.m. check-in.Walkers take off onthe three-mile route around Harbor Plaza,beginning at 10 a.m.Everyone who signs

    up to walk with the NorthBay team willreceive a NorthBay t-shirt, and anyone rais-ing more than $100 earns an event T-shirt.

    The Solano Small BusinessDevelopment Center (SBDC) canprovide access to a number of

    financing options available to localsmall businesses.These options typically fallinto 3 categories:SBA loans, localmicroloans and the Solano MicroenterpriseLoan Fund.

    SBA loans are probably the most com-mon, with the SBA offering several differentloan programs to meet different small busi-ness financing needs.To be eligible theapplicant business must:

    Be a for-profit,small business underSBAs size standards

    Not have the internal resources (busi-

    ness or personal) to provide thefinancing

    Be an eligible type of business, and

    Be able to demonstrate repaymentability.

    Additionally, lenders consider the appli-cants character and credit, managementcapability, collateral, and owners equitycontribution.

    There are 4 general SBA loan programs:1) SBA Microloan Program

    (up to $50,000)2) The Community Advantage Loan

    Program (up to $250,000)3) The 7(a) Guaranty Loan Program

    (up to $5,000,000)

    4) The 504 Loan Program(for long-term financing)

    Local Microloan Programs provides

    very small loans to start-up, newly-estab-lished, and growing small business con-cerns. Loans may be used for typical busi-ness purposes such as working capital,machinery and equipment,inventory andleasehold improvements.Typical loanamounts range from $1,000 to $50,000, andare structured to meet almost any businesscondition.The most common providers are:

    1) Celtic Bank2) Oakland Business Development Corp.3) Opportunity Fund4) Safe-Bidco

    5) Superior Financial Group6) Working Solutions

    The Solano Microenterprise Loan

    Fundprovides loans from $5,000 to$50,000 to low-moderate income house-holds who operate or start a business, with5 or fewer employees,located within theunincorporated areas of the County.
