Stephanie O’ConnorATI

2016-2017 Board Chair

One of my greatest passions is connecting kids with the tools and experiences necessary to realize their vision of success. I find an immense amount of joy in this work; it’s a way to pay it forward. A silent thank you to all the teachers, professors and career mentors who gave me the tools, opportunities and hard truths I needed to move forward in my own life.

We’ve all heard the saying “it takes a village” and it is an ideal metaphor for the Pipeline Program; a robust partnership between the Chamber, industry, education and local government. It works well because all partners place a high value on community and understand that strong communities can only be built with good people, good jobs and the tools and training to connect the two.

Members of the village now actively supporting and funding the Pipeline Program include the Albany Chamber; local manufacturers ATI, Entek, Oregon Freeze Dry, Samaritan Health Services, Selmet and Viper Northwest; Linn Benton Community College; the Albany and Corvallis Public School Districts, Linn County, and the City of Albany. All of these partners regularly sit at the same table to review progress and expansion efforts.

In just three short years, the program has provided thousands of middle school and high school students, educators and parents from Albany, Corvallis, Central Linn and Lebanon, the tools, opportunities and experiences to discover an alternative pathway to good paying jobs. Today, more kids are realizing their vision of success because of the Pipeline Program. Here is what a few of them had to say about it:

National Manufacturing Day Industry Tours • “I learned that there are a lot of employers looking for kids like me.”

• “I would love to do this again.”

• “I learned how I could get a job that I love doing.”

Career Club Tours

• “It was very helpful; it is my dream to go LBCC. I think it is truly inspiring, please take me again!”

• “Thank you for putting up with us! You have helped me a lot and given me more career options than I ever thought possible.”

Middle School Manufacturing Summer Camp

• “I loved all of it. It was all really fun and I would love to do it next year. I also learned so much cool stuff that I didn’t know.”

• “My favorite guest speaker was Selmet because they have really cool products and they had good company benefits. I learned how they process titanium.”

To learn more about the Pipeline Program, please call the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce or visit www.pipelinetojobs.com.

The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” Steven Spielberg

“Time in a Bottle”

The focus of November’s Leadership Edge is to eliminate waste and add value. Time is money, and when time is wasted, it takes money from you, places additional burden on staffing and the ability to get work done, and decreases morale.

Join us this month to evaluate and practice your time management skills in this highly engaging presentation.

Manufacturing Day Oct. 7thA Partnership with Education, Workforce, and Industry. Manufacturing Day is a nationwide event to introduce high school students to the vast career opportunities and unlimited potential for advancement within the manufacturing and skilled trades.

Over 200 High school students and educators from Lebanon, Corvallis, Albany and surrounding schools participated and discovered the wide range of skilled trade programs at Linn Benton Community College (LBCC) and toured our local world leaders in manufacturing to learn about career opportunities; Locations included Concept Systems, Selmet, Mike’s Heating & Air, OFD Foods, W.R. Grace, L&M Fabrication, ATI Millersburg and Entek.

Lego Symposium at LBCC Friday, Oct. 14thIn partnership with LBCC and the STEM Academy, we were excited to help bring Oregon’s first-ever Creative Problem Solvers Symposium to Linn-Benton Community College on Friday, where some 50 educators took advantage of the free training to learn how to bring Lego lessons to their classrooms.

The idea was to give educators tools to use with their students, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, known for short as STEM.

STEM skills are in short supply among young Oregonians, leaving the state at a disadvantage when it comes to filling jobs, solving world problems and simply building life skills, symposium organizers said. The more teachers who get comfortable with STEM lessons, the more children might follow a STEM career path.

Students tour at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center to learn about careers in the healthcare industry. In partnership with Pipeline, Megan Konzelman, Student Services Coordinator, provided tours for students from Corvallis, College Hill, Crescent Valley and Santiam Christian Schools. Students toured and had presentations from: •Samaritan Pastega Regional Cancer Center/Radiation Oncology (SPRCC) •Physical Rehabilitation •Women’s Center They also learned about educational and advancement opportunities that Samaritan offers to students and employees.

Golden TicketRodney Wood Director of Sales & Business Development

Personal Background: I grew up on my parent’s cattle ranch located in the small town of Gazelle, CA. After

graduating high school, I moved to Salem to attend Willamette University and earned a degree in History and minor in Business. After graduating I moved to Albany, and spent a year working as a Basic Life Skills Instructor through Teach America. However, in the fall of 1999, I returned to Willamette to complete my Master’s Degree.

In the summer of 2001 I started my sales career with a technology company from Cedar Rapids, IA. and in the spring of 2002 I began my involvement in the Albany business community, as an Account Executive at Oregon Telecom. It was during my time with Oregon Telecom that I was first introduced to PEAK Internet. Little did I know that 10 years later I would be working for them.

In September of 2012 I was honored to be added to PEAK Internet’s Sr. Management Team as their Director of Sales and Business Development. It’s a very exciting time to be working at PEAK. We continue to grow the Internet Services side of the company through expansion of our Fiber Infrastructure. We also continue to grow our Professional Services Group, providing Managed IT Services for many businesses in the Willamette Valley.

Business Marketing Niche: My personal values, and that of PEAK Internet interconnect very well, with the strong belief building valuable long lasting relationships. I take pride in the relationships that I have built over the last 17 years, and I consider the customers that I work with to be my friends. On the day-to-day business side of things, I love diving into a problem and finding the best possible solution. I truly enjoy working directly with a business to tailor an individual solution that will work for them. I understand that every business is different, every situation is different, and not every company is ever the same. It’s this personal connection to the customer that sets myself and PEAK Internet apart.

Biggest Issue Facing Albany: I think the biggest issue facing Albany today is the upcoming election, and if measure 97 will pass or not. Businesses are facing a measure in 97 that without a doubt will increase the cost of doing business. I think for some businesses it’s going to force them to make some very hard choices.

Chamber Involvement: I often attend various Chamber events; Greeters, Forum Luncheons, and Business-After-Hours. I also enjoy being involved in the Chamber Golf Tournament and Albany Business Extravaganza. In the future I hope to partake in the Albany Leadership Class.
