Occupation: Long Term LOA Work eperience: *For a decade, I was a nursing assistant working with severely mentally and physically challenged children and adults at Brantwood Residential Development Centre in Brantford. All aspects of care and feeding, medical care and behaviour management where required under professional guidance also. *Walsh Sheet Metal Office Manager Trained to replace the office manager for relief hours. (temporary) *Computer Systems Technician. Professional clients in Brantford under Planrite Systems Solutions included many on Six Nations, City of Brantford, County of Brant, Brantford Police Services, and numerous businesses throughout the county. *Self Employment within K&P Enterprises as a Computer Consultant part time. *Construction as aluminum installer (eaves-trough) assistant part time (5 years) *After health became an issue, a position within a branch of American Express through NCO group until July 2009 LOA from work Education: *Left Canada with family and educated in England, returned at age 15 to finish. *Two College fast track concurrently for Computer Software, and Computer Systems. Included accounting and business courses. Valedictorian and Committment to Professionalism Faculty Award. *Attained Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and other qualifications in the computer field as well as many other designations including A+ etc. Skills: My sister had an accident when she was very small, and had a devastating brain injury. I watched while the whole family did everything for her. I couldn't stand it. I taught her everything I could. Through tantrums and even some by the adults. Today, I am proud of all that she is, because she is so independent. When I worked at Brantwood Centre, it was so much more than a job to me. Advocacy was a primary and daily need by my clients as many were nonverbal. When I started to have serious health issues and found myself in a wheelchair most of the time, I realized that people could benefit by my experience. I wish I had shared myself sooner.

Interest reason: Actually I have been serving on many subcommittees for a fair while now and I really enjoy it. The current attending members seem to really need more help from members with energy, that have time to spend, and I do! When you have passion for something, you can't resist helping, and I have basically inserted myself into the whole committee already without being official. I am hoping to be of some real help as a proper member, instead of just being another body at the table with an opinion. Contributions: I have time, and energy, and technical expertise to donate freely to the projects already underway and I am currently as involved as I really can be, while just being a volunteer. I would really love to spearhead and brainstorm creative ways to link our committee with Council. The goal as I see it, is to give as much as we can of ourselves and experience as we can so that

Council can make better decisions for London. That means communicating really well with all aspects of City Hall and learning on our end how things are managed so we can participate well. Past contributions: Previously I worked with Mary Mitton and the Literacy Council in Brantford. I also ran a support group for members , to help them continue in their fight for a literate life. I invited motivational speakers and reported the effect to the Board. We shared ideas and brainstormed fresh angles to help grow the project. Education for the Board, and for the illiterate was most important. Participating in ILPs, or Independant Life Plans for my clients at Brantwood, was likely the most important input I have made. Literally life changing decisions made based on my input, and others. Interpersonal: Additionally I have had vast dealings in business with countless companies designing networks and installing hardware to meet client's needs. I have had interdepartmental meetings and held large conferences to teach new skills to employees. I have needed to work closely with other companies to share skill sets to collaborate on job sites many times. That has involved interviewing them to attain the knowledge I need to gauge where their skills stop and where I need to fill in as project manager, or fill that gap with another tradesman. Additionally I have learned a great deal from the new people I have met on the current committee. They have varied backgrounds, and the knowledge they possess is very different from my own. Listening to them has proven very educational and has helped me to put my own skills into the context of the tasks a t hand.

Name: Jim Barlen Address:

71 Blackfriars Street London ON N6H 1K8

Day telephone: Residence telephone:

Occupation: Student Health and Safety Trainer Work eperience: I work at London Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) as a Student Trainer. LOSH is a not-for-profit organization that assists injured workers and is dedicated to preventing workplace disease, injury and death. I teach a three hour awareness course about occupational health and safety for young workers between the ages of 15 and 24. Young workers have the highest rates of workplace injuries and fatalities, so the course focuses on teaching them about their rights and identifying potential hazards. I am responsible for developing and delivering this interactive training course. My other duties include goal setting and creating promotional material to raise awareness about occupational health and safety issues. Education: I am in my 4th year of a Bachelor of Arts Program at the University of Western Ontario. I am actively perusing a double major in Political Science and Sociology. Skills: I have the ability to communicate my opinion and collaborate with a group to solve problems. I am an attentive listener and enjoy discussing issues. I have had the opportunity to attend meetings of LOSH’s Repetitive Strain Injury support group and talk with workers who have been injured on the job. These injured workers are just one group that expressed accessibility issues. I have a strong knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Employment Standards Act. I feel that I will be able to apply this health and safety knowledge and provide a perspective that can assist this advisory committee.

Interest reason: I moved to London four years ago when I started university. I will be finished university soon, and I would l i e to serve on this committee because I want to stay connected to the city. I have a strong interest in local government and its ability to positively impact the day-to- day life of Londoners. Our society is plagued with inequalities, and accessibility barriers are an excellent example of inequality that continues to persist, but is seldom at the forefront of our media. I feel that eliminating accessibility barriers is necessary in order to achieve a positive and productive community environment. Serving as a member of the Accessibility Advisory Committee would give me the opportunity to apply my educational background and give back to the community. Contributions: My goal would be to raise awareness about the scope of accessibility issues and work in a team setting to eliminate accessibility barriers in London. My job at LOSH puts me in contact with various organizations within London’s not-for-profit and business communities. I am connected with Western and each year I train Co-op students in the TVDSB and LCDSB prior to their work placements. This allows me to interact with a diverse group of citizens and exposes me to the views of younger members of our community. As both a student and as young worker within London’s not-for-profit community, I can assist in developing an accessibility plan that will

serve the entire population. Past contributions: Through my involvement with LOSH I have gained experience promoting health and safety in the London community. I feel that I will be able to apply these promotional skills to raise awareness about the accessibility barriers that exist. I have not yet participated on an advisory committee, however in high school I was on my student executive for three years, including serving as president in my final year. In 2004 I had the opportunity to attend the Canadian Student Leadership Conference representing my high school. This involvement in student government provided me with opportunity to enhance the quality of life for staff and students at my high school. Interpersonal: Throughout my schooling I have had the opportunity to express my opinions and point of view with others in a classroom setting. At LOSH, I work with our board of directors, executive director, community resource coordinator and numerous volunteers to serve the London working community. This is a diverse group of individuals that excels because each person brings their own abilities and unique perspective. When I facilitate occupational health and safety training courses for young workers, each course is different. Regardless of the group, I encourage participation by creating an environment based on mutual respect. Creating this positive environment has allowed me to meaningfully connect with groups of varying ages, work experience and academic ability.

I know and understand the daily routines, the appointments, dealing with doctors, nurses, therapists, schools and more, that become a regular part of your life. For me to understand and deal with certain things, I need to have and know information. So with that, came another part or aspect of my life. Finding out as much as I couldkan about things my son was going and does go through. I am the biggest advocate for my son and over the years, I have become more than just Mom. We all know that Mom's have many titles. I'm proud of all mine. Over the years, I have helped other families in their struggles by sharing information and resources as well as advocating with/for them and their families. This passion has led to a bigger decision for me. This past year, I have taken this passion and turned it into a business - a service to help others who have gone through and/or are on the same journey, of raising someone with special needs. I provide customized seminars/workshops and speaking engagements. I advocate for people who have and/or are involved with special needs, and also help families program DynaVox communication devices, for those who use that particular augmentative communication device. My vision is to bridge the gap of communication and information for individuals affected by/with special needs, to make the voices of individuals with special needs heard and included. Having a special needs child and being passionate about the needs of him and others in similar circumstances, I have a wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding of different situations that cadmay arise within families.

Interest reason: To increase my knowledge and share with others what information and resources are out there. Awareness is important and what is going to help bring things closer to where they should be. Contributions: Great communicator, good with resources, passionate, personable.
