Dear Fellows and Members, It gives me great pleasure to report that the 46 th Annual Academic Sessions of the College were successfully conducted on 12-14 th September at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo under the theme “Physicians for the Future”. is year, the Sessions were a joint academic activity held in collaboration with the Royal College of Physicians of London. e RCP delegation was led by its Academic Vice President Professor John Wass, and included Dr Fraz Mir, the new Associate International Director for South Asia, and his predecessor Dr Nick Beeching. We were particularly pleased that, for the first time, the CCP sessions were approved for CPD accreditation by the RCP for its members. I take this opportunity to thank the RCP London delegation for their unstinted support in making this a truly collaborative academic activity. A pre-congress workshop for postgraduate trainees and trainers was conducted jointly with the RCP. is was designed to cover many areas which are traditionally not addressed in the postgraduate training programmes, but are vitally important for the development of a compassionate and caring physician.. Another pre- congress activity was the Immunology Day conducted in collaboration with the UK-Sri Lanka Immunology Foundation. Again for the first time, an essay competition on clinical immunology was held for medical students and postgraduate trainees. e sessions were a great success, due to the vital contributions made by local and overseas resource persons, chairpersons, judges of free papers and reviewers of orations and free papers. I was particularly happy that a research paper first presented at one of the Regional Meetings was adjudged the Best Poster presentation. A record number of delegates attended the meeting, and record numbers of submissions were received for free papers and orations. e sessions were approved for duty leave by the Ministry of Health this year, another first. I sincerely thank the Joint Secretaries, the Organising Committee and the Office Staff for their untiring efforts in the successful conduct of the sessions. e sixth in the Regional Meeting Programme was conducted in Batticaloa on 4-5 th October in collaboration with the Batticaloa Clinical Society. Five different programmes were successfully conducted over the two days - clinical meeting for medical professionals, symposium on NCDs and a workshop on disability and rehabilitation for nursing officers, community awareness programme on NCDs, workshop on medical teaching for staff of the fledgling Faculty of Medicine of the Eastern University, and a workshop on enhancing skills on insulin delivery for nursing officers. ree more regional meetings are planned for October and November - in Kalutara, Ratnapura and Badulla. e completion of these will enable us realise our goal of having one regional meeting in each province. is has been a busy year for the College, and on behalf of the Council of the Ceylon College of Physicians, I thank all of you for the support you have extended to us in all our activities.
