On April 15, seven youth (Emma, Faith, Haliegh, Isaac, Jimmy, Reece, and Tyler) three adults (Naomi, Zipper, and I), and one child (Elijah) traveled from Centerville to Fredericksburg for Mission Madness weekend. That night, at Fredericksburg Baptist Church, we joined over two hundred and fifty other youth and adults for an opening worship service that emphasized being neighbors. We heard a sermon on the parable of the Good Samaritan, reminding us that the one who acted like a neighbor was the least expected one according to Jesus’ hearers. Then we were challenged to think of the ways that “fences”, literal and figurative, keep us from being good neighbors to others. The next day, we would put these lessons to practice as we served a Fredericksburg community.

I’ve been to Mission Madness—sponsored by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia—and I’ve been to other youth mission camps like it a number of times in my life. I’m familiar with the combination of worship, fellowship, and hands on ministry that encourage youth to think about what it means to share Christ’s love with others. For me, however, this particular camp was different. There was a personal touch to the idea of serving our neighbors.

On Saturday morning, we pulled out of the hotel parking lot, drove through the outskirts of Fredericksburg, and pulled into my parents’ yard. Dozens of other cars, trucks, and church vans covered their yard and the Sylvania Heights Baptist Church parking lot across the street.

Fourteen and a half years ago, my father was called to be pastor of Sylvania Heights Baptist Church, a smallish church in a working class neighborhood. He and my Mom moved into the parsonage across the street. Several streets of modest homes run through the Sylvania Heights neighborhood. Within Sylvania Heights is a trailer park, River Heights, which runs behind my parents’ house, but is separated from the rest of Sylvania Heights by fences.

When my parents moved in, the community was changing and it has changed even more since. What was originally a fairly homogenous neighborhood of working-class laborers for the nearby Sylvania plant, now closed, is today a multicultural, multi-economic, multinational, and multilingual community. Amongst the many changes over the past few decades, is the fact that Sylvania Heights and River Heights are home to a sizeable number of Spanish-speaking families, many of who are new to the States.

This year for Mission Madness, we, all two hundred and fifty of us, served that community. We practiced being neighbors to my parents’ actual neighbors, to people with whom my parents have been sharing hospitality for years. We practiced reaching over fences in places where Christian neighbors have been working tirelessly to break down fences—Christian neighbors like Mom and Dad, their church, Fredericksburg Baptist, and LUCHA, a ministry which provides a wide-range of services to Latino families in Fredericksburg.

We spruced up yards of kids who have come to Study Buddies, the LUCHA-sponsored tutoring program where my parents volunteer . We repaired steps of adults who go to LUCHA’s ESL program, which, like Study Buddies, is offered at Sylvania Heights Baptist. We painted the home of a young family that my boys and I have hung out with at Mom and Dad’s house. We got to meet many from Sylvania Heights and River Heights who with surprised joy asked their neighbor, Pastor Paul—as my Dad is affectionately known, why all of these young people would donate time and money to be in their neighborhood for a weekend.

Like all youth mission camps I’ve been a part of, I rejoice over observing our young people and adults learning to give of themselves, gaining confidence as they pick up new skills, developing new relationships, and stretching past their comfort zones to share and experience Christ’s love in new ways. This time, however, I had a unique appreciation for the community we worked in. I had a better, more personal understanding of the ongoing work in the community that extended way before Mission Madness and will continue long afterwards.

Forgive me if I sound self-indulgent, but my self-indulgence has a point. We often talk about how we need to take our mission experiences home with us. We talk about serving in our own back yard. We talk about breaking down fences right next door. And I know how true this needs to be and can be, because it is literally happening in my parents’ back yard. There is nothing extraordinary about Mom and Dad or Sylvania Heights. Like everywhere, however, there are needs and opportunities. Like everywhere, however, God is at work in and through the lives of neighbors. God is at work in my parents’ back yard, God is at work in the youth ministry of Centerville, and God is at work in your life and community too! Won’t you practice loving God and loving neighbors where you live right here and right now?

April Showers Brings May Flowers And Happy Mother’s Day to ALL! With the warm weather and sunshine brings about a lot of activity at the Extended Child Care. Summer plan-ning is in full swing. All the fieldtrips are scheduled. Please view the calendar for all the fun. Over time you will see more and more upgrades being done on the old wing. Things are looking really good with the new windows and doors. If anyone would like to contribute time or funds to assist with the upgrades please feel free to see me. The Property committee cannot do all that is needed to meet the upgrades neces-sary. Mike Weeks made a presentation last year discussing major repairs. I wish to contribute to those repairs but there is still a lot of funds needed. In the next month there will be some reconstruction on the big playground due to the slide having a crack. So be patient through this process. Mulch will be delivered for all playgrounds. I will be soliciting help to spread the mulch. Does someone have a bobcat or small tractor? Russell’s Heating and Cooling will also be installing a split unit in the kitchen of the old fellowship hall. Norma Harrington Extended Child Care Director

It’s that time of year to start planning for CBC’s Fall Festival. Last year’s

festival was a great success and we’re looking forward to this year’s being

even better, but we need your help.

Volunteers are needed to be a part of the task force for

this event. If interested, please see Judy Caldwell.
