Jaguar recently teased us with the new XFR-S and at the LA Motor Show they showed it in its full powder blue glory. It’s not your normal Jag, you get 542bhp through the rear wheels, bigger wings, more vents, a splash of carbon fibre and a lot of noise. Under the bonnet is a 5.0 ltr supercharged V8 which allows it to reach a top speed of 186mph.

Bentley won a string of Le Mans victories in the 1920s, and since then it’s been trying to convince us that its luxury cars are actually sports cars. It raced and won at Le Mans in 2003, and now Bentley is back withthe Continental GT3 concept. Bentley did not divulge any mechanical details, but the word is it’s likely to borrow the 6.0ltr, twin turbocharged W-12 from the Continental GT Speed from which it is based upon. It produces 616bhp and 590 lb-ft of torque in stock form.

Since the internal combustion engine was invented and fitted within a car like structure man has strived to make it go faster than any other vehicle on the road and track, thus motor racing was born!

The Early Days of European Motor Sportby Jill Carter

The French were the world leaders in car manufacture and at the forefront of motor racing organisation. Marcel Renault, together with his brothers Louis and Fernand founded the car manufacturer Renault in late 1899. Like all car builders he wanted to show case his cars by racing. In 1903 he entered the Paris-Madrid race, starting in 60th position and was almost up with the leaders by his arrival time at the Poitiers control point. Sadly he crashed at Cohué Vérac due to impaired visibility from excessive dust clouds whist overtaking. He was critically injured, dying the next day without regaining consciousness.During the race eight people died, three spectators and five racers. An inquiry showed that bad organisation, a general lack of under-standing of the dangers of motor sport and a poorly policed event contributed to the death toll. Some of these racers were capable of speeds exceeding the steam trains of the period, an unbeliev-able 140 kph plus! The race was called off at Bordeaux by order of the French Government. It would not be until 1927 with the Italian Mille Miglia, that open-road racing returned to Europe.

On July 23, 1894, the Parisian magazine Le Petit Journal organized what is considered to be the world's first motoring competition from Paris to Rouen. The race started from Porte Maillot and went through the Bois de Boulogne. Count Jules-Albert de Dion was first into Rouen after 6 hours and 48 minutes at an average speed of 19 km/h. He finished 3’30” ahead of Albert Lemaître (Peugeot), followed by Doriot (Peugeot) at 16’30”, René Panhard (Panhard) at 33’30’’ and Émile Levassor (Panhard) at 55’30”. The official winners were Peugeot and Panhard as cars were judged on their speed, handling and safety characteristics, as De Dion's steam car needed a stoker which was forbidden. A number of other races were undertaken of varying distances on the open-roads. In 1907 the Peking to Paris race covered 9,317 miles over some of the roughest terrain on Earth. Five cars took part in the race, which was won by the Italian Prince Scipione Borghese in a 7,433 cc (453.6 cu in) 35/45 hp model Itala.

This sculpture was exhibited at the Goodwood 2010 Festival of Speed on the Media Centre lawn with the permission of the owner Mike Timms. It is a life-size depiction in Corten steel of the last moments of Marcel Renault, whose eponymous racer crashed just before reaching the Bordeaux checkpoint. As well as testifying to the courage of those who risked their lives with similarly heroic feats in the early years of the 20th century, Jules Parker’s sculpture expresses the human struggle to control the machines we create. The contrast between the hurtling car and the fragility of its occupants is plain to see: the car itself is simplified into its essen-tial shapes, from the characteristic coalscuttle bonnet shovelling its way through the air to the curved discs of its spinning wheels. It looks unstoppably weighty in sculpture form as in reality, note the sculptor in the second photograph.

I chose to write about this subject because the sculpture and the Paris-Madrid race demonstrated so well human determination to develop technology to the full and the inborn need to succeed.

2. In section 12, (Circumstances) the numbered column on the left describes the manoeuvres of car A

and the one on the right those of car B. If you are unsure which box to mark, leave it blank. Make a

drawing of the accident in section 13 indicating the manoeuvre of each car.

3. If anybody has been injured or if you think they might have been injured, complete section 24.

4. If there is more than one car involved in the accident, also complete section 23, on the reverse side

of the form, and include it in the sketch.

5. Sign the form and keep a copy.

Volvo is Developing a Crashproof Car.The ever safety conscious Volvo are claiming that within 8 years they can produce vehicles which drive them-selves and are totally crashproof. The computerised vehicles will be fitted with many high-tech sensors and will 'refuse to be steered' into other objects. The sensors will detect poten-tial collisions and take action.It is part of the race by leading car manufacturers including Volvo, Ford Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Vauxhall and even Google to build fully automo-mous ‘Robo-cars’ that can drive them-selves. The biggest issue is not the technology, as you would probably expect, this has largely been devel-oped. It's the public acceptance of it and issues of who would be liable if a crashproof car did actually crash: the driver or the manufacturer?

The New BMW 4-Series Coupe.This year will see the end of the 3-series coupe and the intro-duction of the 4-series replacement. This concept car is already production-ready and will be seen first at the Detroit Motor Show later this month. The coupes are expected to be ready by the summer followed by a hard-top folding convert-ible. Also in the pipe-line is a Gran Coupe with four doors. You can expect to pay around 2,000€ more than the equivalent 3-series.

HRT not returning to Formula One11 teams are set to compete in F1 next season after struggling Spanish-based HRT were not included on the official entry docu-ment for 2013. The HRT team was founded by Spanish ex-Formula 1 driver Adrian Campos in 2010, but did not score a single point in these three years. his second year of competition in 1971. Funding himself, he won the Brazilian SuperVee Championship in 1976, then went to Europe on the advice of Emer-son Fittipaldi. Piquet took the record number of wins in Formula Three in 1978, defeating Jackie Stewart's all-time record. In 1979, he joined the Brabham F1 team and finished the runner-up in 1980 before winning his first championship in 1981. He repeated the feat in 1983. After a poor couple of years, he moved to the Williams team in 1986 and was a title contender until the final round in Australia. Piquet took his third and final championship in 1987 during a heated battle with team-mate Nigel Mansell. After stints at Lotus and Benetton he retired from F1 in 1991, a triple title-winner. Piquet competed in the Indianapolis 500 for two years and is currently retired and runs several businesses in Brazil and manages his son Nelson Piquet Jr.

Following a delayed decision on a New Jersey Grand Prix, the FIA has added a new window for a Grand Prix to be held on July 21 and seem to favour a comeback at Istanbul. Last month Red Bull suggested having a GP at Red Bull Ring in Austria but had not discussed with FIA.

The Maroc ChallengeThe Maroc Challenge is a 3,700km event across the mountains and deserts of Morocco. Starting in Javea and taking the ferry from Motril to Melilla with a finish line at Essaouira beach in Morocco. There are timed stages throughout the course which is on secondary roads and dirt tracks. Now in its thrd year, the Challenge is open to anyone with or without experience in rally driving. Cars can be two or four-wheeled

For the last 10 years there has been a greatevent in aid of children with special needs. I am delighted to say I was invited to attend this fabulous and very worthwhile event by Antonio Marti, a member of the JEC, but also a member of the Club de Automoviles Antiguos de Valencia, a major sponsor of this event. Over 150 classic car owners volunteered to take part. and 500 children enjoyed being driven very fast around the circuit. Brass bands, police and fire sirens all added to the electric atmosphere. I will certainly be encouraging other members of the JEC in Spain to give up a little bit of their time next year to provide some lessfortunate children the thrill of a life time. Eric Arnold
