Math, Physics, Technology & Engineering Science [ ]

description

This booklet is one of six in a series that offers launch points for one-on-one conversations with prospective students about the programs of study, student clubs and activities, and potential careers that are available through Corning Community College's various academic divisions. To bring this project to fruition, I identified student, faculty, alumni, and employer stories; solicited testimonials and/or conducted interviews; arranged for all photography; wrote all copy; and developed the layout and design of all pieces in this series as part of a Recruitment (sales) communication plan for this two-year State University of New York (SUNY) institution.

CCC is committed to sustainability—right down to the paint our students use in the auto body and collision repair programs. In fact, CCC is the only educational facility on the East Coast to have access to state-of-the-art environmentally-friendly PPG Envirobase® High Performance waterborne coatings system

PPG Industries provided the necessary equipment, supplies, and training free of charge. The first test of the new equipment was successfully unveiled in the presence of more than 80 local auto body repair specialists. The Envirobase® High Performance system is currently used in Europe, California, and Canada where air quality regulations mandate lower volatile organic compounds (VOC) in refinish basecoats. It is also being used by ecologically-conscious collision and automobile dealer centers throughout North America.

Use of Envirobase® High Performance waterborne coatings helps improve air quality by significantly reducing the amount of VOC released into the atmosphere. The waterborne coating is well below the National Rule for VOC and is a true stand alone water refinishing system. The paint also provides the enhanced ability to match a vehicle’s original finish.

“There’s a huge market out there where you’re competing against other people for a job. If you can demonstrate math skills you will have an advantage. Math makes you an all-around good thinker and problem-solver. These skills apply to all of life, whether it’s your job or you’re buying a car.

“I really like to see women in the classroom. I would like to encourage more females to take higher-level math and to go into math, science, and engineering. I hope I am a role model. Maybe if they see me, maybe they will think ‘I can do it too.’”

] ]“I’m a life learner—I like to learn things and I like to pass that on to students. It may not just be math; it could be anything. If I can turn them on to an appreciation of learning—how math can be fun and can relate to what they do without the fear of ‘I’m not very good at math,’—then they can break through those walls or boundaries or whatever may be holding them back. That’s when it’s rewarding.”
