Reflection

The disciples had a very intense experience of Jesus on the mountain. Have you ever had a "mountain top" experience? What was it like? In what ways does Jesus speak today, ways in which you can truly

"listen to him?"

“Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.

And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.

Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, ‘Rabbi, it is good that we are here!

Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.

Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, ‘This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.’

Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain,

he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.”

Annual Diocesan Appeal 2018 A collaboration in which every parish contributes to-ward the support of ministries and services rendered by our Diocese of San Jose. The Cathedral goal this year is $135,500. Each household taking part in the cam-paign helps the Cathedral parish reach its goal toward funding education, training and service to the faithful of our Diocese. If you have not received an information packet in the mail, we have them available in the church. If we achieve 100% participation, we will not only match but surpass last year’s success! Contribu-tions that surpass the goal are rebated to our parish di-rectly. You can make it happen!

This year we hear Mark’s version of Jesus’ Transfiguration. The context is similar to that found in both Mat-thew’s and Luke’s Gospel. It occurs after Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus’ prediction about his passion. In each Gospel,

there follows a discussion of the cost of discipleship. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John to a high mountain. There, Elijah and Moses appear with Jesus. In Mat-thew’s and Mark’s Gospel, there is reference to a con-versation among Jesus, Elijah, and Moses. Moses rep-resents the Law that guides the lives of the Jewish people. Elijah is remembered as one of the most im-portant prophets of Israel who helped the Israelites stay faithful to Yahweh. Some Jews believed that Eli-jah’s return would signal the coming of the Messiah for the Jewish people. This belief is evidenced in the question posed by Jesus’ disciples after witnessing the Transfiguration. The appearance of these two im-portant figures from Israel’s history with Jesus signi-fies Jesus’ continuity with the Law and with the prophets and that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was promised to the people of Israel. On seeing Jesus with Elijah and Moses and having witnessed his Transfiguration, Peter offers to build three tents for them. Mark reports that the disciples are terrified by what they have witnessed and that Peter’s offer is made out of confusion. Also, Peter has reverted from his earlier confession that Jesus is the Messiah, calling Jesus rabbi instead. As if in reply, a voice from heaven speaks, affirming Jesus as God's Son and commanding the disciples to obey him, recalling the voice heard at Jesus’ baptism. In his Transfiguration, we see an antic-ipation of the glory of Jesus’ Resurrection. In each report of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructs the disci-ples to keep secret what they have seen until after the Son of Man has risen from the dead. The disciples’ confusion continues as they wonder what Jesus means by rising from the dead. They cannot possibly under-stand Jesus’ Transfiguration until they also witness his passion and death. Hearing of the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration early in Lent, hindsight allows us to anticipate Jesus’ Resurrection, even as we prepare to remember Jesus’ passion and death.

Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio January 20, 1502 - February 25, 1600

Sebastian’s roads and bridges connected many distant places. His final bridge-building was to help men and women recog-nize their God-given dignity and destiny. Sebastian’s parents were Spanish peasants. At the age of 31, he sailed to Mexico, where he began working in the fields. Eventually he built roads to facilitate agricultural trading and other commerce. His 466-mile road from Mexico City to Zacatecas took 10 years to build and required careful negotiations with the in-digenous peoples along the way. In time Sebastian was a wealthy farmer and rancher. At the age of 60, he entered a virginal marriage. His wife’s motivation may have been a large inheritance; his was to provide a respectable life for a girl without even a modest marriage dowry. When his first wife died, he entered an-other virginal marriage for the same reason; his second wife also died young. At the age of 72, Sebastian distributed his goods among the poor and entered the Franciscans as a brother. Assigned to the large (100-member) friary at Pueblo de los Ángeles south of Mexi-co City, Sebastian went out collecting alms for the friars for the next 25 years. His charity to all earned him the nickname “Angel of Mexico.” Sebastian was beatified in 1787 and is known as a patron of travelers. Reflection According to the Rule of St. Francis, the friars were to work for their daily bread. Sometimes, however, their work would not provide for their needs; for example, working with people suffering from leprosy brought little or no pay. In cases such as these, the friars were allowed to beg, always keeping in mind the admonition of Francis to let their good example commend them to the people. The life of the prayerful Sebas-tian drew many closer to God.

Matching Gifts to the Cathedral

Did you know that many employers match charitable donations for their employees? In the past we have received matches from Apple, Texas Instruments and will be receiving one from Intel. If you aren’t sure whether or not your employer will match to a church we also have the San Jose Cathedral Foundation. The Foundation benefits the Office for Social Ministry, Arts and the preservation of the Cathedral and it has a different tax ID number. Most programs will require that we provide them with our 501(3) C tax documentation which we are happy to do. Please check with your employer. If you need any help with this, please feel free to call me in the business office at (408)283-8100 ext 2228. The Cathedral parish tax ID number is 94-2734503 The San Jose Cathedral Foundation ID 77-0208232
