Reflection

We hear the story of Jesus’ death each year. What did you hear differently this year? How has your faith changed in the past year?

Identify and share one way that you personally "die in Christ."

80 South Market Street, San José, CA 95113-2321 408-283-8100 www.stjosephcathedral.org ,

“When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives,

he sent two of his disciples and said to them, ‘Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it,

you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone should say to you,

‘Why are you doing this?’ reply, ‘The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.’ So they went off

and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. Some of the bystanders said to them, ‘What are you doing, untying the colt?’

They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it.

So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road,

and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out:

‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come!

Hosanna in the highest!’” Mark 14:1-15:47

The first Gospel of Palm Sunday, pro-claimed before the procession with palms, tells of Jesus’ triumphant en-trance into Jerusalem. Riding on a bor-rowed colt, Jesus was hailed by the crowds as they blessed God and shout-ed “Hosanna!” When Jesus was arrest-

ed and brought before the Sanhedrin—the council of Jewish priests, scribes, and elders—he was charged with blasphemy, citing his threat to the Temple. Jesus’ disciples do little to invoke confidence in their capaci-ty to continue his ministry after his death. At the Last Supper, the disciples insisted that none among them would betray Jesus. When Jesus predicted that their faith would be shaken in the events ahead, Peter and the other disciples protested vehemently. Yet in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus returned three times to find them sleeping. Jesus prayed in agony over his impending fate while his disciples slumbered through the night. Just as Jesus predicted, Peter denied Jesus, and the disciples were absent during Jesus’ passion and death. Only the women who had been followers of Jesus in Galilee are said to have been present at the Crucifixion, but they remained at a distance. Jesus un-derstood his death to have been preordained, and he accepted this death in obedience to God’s will. Jewish Scripture is quoted only once, but there are several references to the fulfillment of the Scriptures. Jesus understood his anointing in Bethany as an anticipation of his burial, and he announced that this story would be told together with the Gospel throughout the world. Jesus predicted his betrayal by Judas as well as Peter’s denial. At his arrest, Jesus acknowledged that the pre-ordained time had arrived. Jesus was both confident and silent before his accusers. After he was sentenced to death, Jesus did not speak again until his final cry from the cross. The Roman centurion affirmed that Jesus is the Son of God. Nowhere was this revealed more fully than in his death on the cross. During Holy Week, we prayerfully remember the events of Jesus’ passion and death. As we meditate on the cross, we ask again and anew what it means to make the state-ment of faith that Jesus, in his obedient suffering and dying, revealed himself to us as God’s Son. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Blessed Oscar Arnulfo Romero August 15, 1917 – March 24, 1980 The night before he was murdered while celebrating

Mass, Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador said on the radio: “I would like to appeal in a special way to the men of the army, and in particular to the troops of the National Guard, the police, and the garrisons. Brothers, you belong to our own people. You kill your own brother peasants; and in the face of an order to kill that is given by a man, the law of God that says ‘Do not kill!’ should prevail. “No soldier is obliged to obey an order counter to the law of God. No one has to comply with an immoral law. It is the time now that you recover your conscience and obey its dictates rather than the command of sin. . . . Therefore, in the name of God, and in the name of this long-suffering people, whose laments rise to heaven every day more tumultuous, I beseech you, I beg you, I command you! In the name of God: ‘Cease the repres-sion!’” With this, Romero had elo-quently upheld the gospel and effectively signed his own death warrant. When appointed archbishop of San Salvador in 1977, Bishop Romero was considered a very “safe” choice. He had served as auxiliary bishop for four years before his three years as bishop of Santiago de Maria. Oscar’s father wanted him to be a carpenter—a trade for which he demonstrated some talent. Seminary clas-ses in El Salvador preceded his studies at Rome’s Gregorian University and his ordination in 1942. After earning a doctor-ate in ascetical theology, he returned home and became a par-ish priest and later rector of an interdiocesan seminary. Three weeks after his appointment as archbishop, Romero was shak-en by the murder of his good friend Jesuit Father Rutilio Grande, a vigorous defender of the rights of the poor. Five more priests were assassinated in the Archdiocese of San Sal-vador during Romero’s years as its shepherd. When a military junta seized control of the national government in 1979, Archbishop Romero publicly criticized the US government for backing the junta. His weekly radio sermons, broadcast throughout the country, were regarded by many as the most trustworthy source of news available. Romero’s funeral was celebrated in the plaza outside the ca-thedral and drew an estimated 250,000 mourners. Pope Fran-cis authorized a decree recognizing Oscar Romero as a martyr for the faith on February 3 of 2015. His beatification took place in San Salvador on May 23, 2015. At a meeting on March 6 with Cardinal Angelo Amato, pre-fect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes, Pope Francis for-mally signed a decree recognizing a miracle needed to ad-vance the sainthood cause of Blessed Romero. No date has been announced for his canonization.

San Jose Barracuda Event

On Saturday, February 3, a group of St. Joseph parishioners along with Fr. Jeff Fernandez and Deacon Greg Ortiz attended the San Jose Barracuda game. The game was fun to watch and there were other activities for the crowd. One of these activities was the “Chuck a Puck” contest. This is a game where people throw foam hockey pucks to the center of the ice and try and hit the bull’s eye. The Cathedral was the benefactor of the proceeds of this game. We have received a check for $505.50 from the San Jose Sharks. Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser and I hope that more people will consider supporting our events in the future. Tanis Zuccaro Check out the Cathedral on the scoreboard!
