CAROLINA STARTING PITCHING NOTES

BURNING THROUGH: Corbin Burnes was promoted to Double-A Biloxi on 5/29. Burnes was 5-0 over 10 starts with the Mudcats and left the Carolina League as the league leader in earned run average (1.05), WHIP (0.88) and fewest baserunners/9ip ratio (8.25). Burnes was also second in the league in lowest average against (.181), third in innings pitched (60.0) and fourth in strikeouts (56) before the promotion. He was later named the Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May. YOUNG ROTATION: The Mudcats feature one of the youngest starting rotations in the Carolina League with five of their regular starters all 21 years of age or younger. Carolina’s current starting rotation of Marcos Diplan (20), Kodi Medeiros (21), Freddy Peralta (21), Trey Supak (21) and Jordan Yamamoto (21), account for five of the Carolina League’s top 10 youngest pitchers. PROSPECTS GALORE: The Mudcats currently have 10 players ranked on MLB.com's list of top 30 Brewers prospects (four of which ranking in the Brewers top 10). The plethora of top rated Brewers prospects with Carolina include pitchers Marcos Diplan (11), Cody Ponce (15), Kodi Medeiros (18), Freddy Peralta (19), and Trey Supak (30). The list also includes outfielder Corey Ray (2), infielder Isan Diaz (5), outfielder Trent Clark (6), third baseman Lucas Erceg (7) and infielder Jake Gatewood (25). MUDCAT NO-NOs: Marcos Diplan (5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 SO) and Freddy Peralta (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) flirted with franchise history as they carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a 2-1 victory on 4/10 in Wilmington. Peralta gave up three straight hits to start the Wilmington eighth while losing the no-hit bid… Nic Ungs owns the only individual no-hitter in Carolina Mudcats franchise history. Ungs no-hit the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on July 29, 2005 and was the last Mudcats pitcher to complete a no-hitter. Ungs' no-hitter is one of four in Mudcats franchise history. The other three were all combined and included no-hit efforts from Mike Zimmerman and Dennis Tafoya versus Chattanooga on May 8, 1992... Ryan Snare (5.0 IP), Steve Kent (1.0 IP) and Ryan Baker (1.0 IP) versus Mobile on April 9, 2003... Trevor Hutchinson (8.0 IP) and Kevin Cave (1.0 IP) versus Huntsville on April 14, 2004.

BREW OF THE MONTH: Jake Gatewood was named the Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for April. Gatewood finished the first month of the season batting .329/.433/.573 with 19 runs, eight doubles, four home runs, nine RBIs, 15 walks and in an 10 game hitting streak. Gatewood closed the first month of the season 9th in the Carolina League in batting average (.329), 3rd in OBP (.433), 5th in SLG (.573), 2nd in OPS (1.006), 1st in runs scored (19), 4th in hits (27), tied for 2nd in extra-base hits (12), tied for 3rd in walks (15), tied for 2nd in home runs (4) and 2nd in doubles (8). HIDDEN-BALL TRICK: Lucas Erceg successfully executed the hidden-ball trick on 5/3 at Five County Stadium against the Buies Creek Astros and outfielder Kyle Tucker. Tucker, and trailing runner Dexture McCall, had just stolen third and second base respectively when Erceg attempted the play. Erceg applied his tag (on a throw from catcher Mitch Ghelfi) and then bluffed his throw back to pitcher Wuilder Rodriguez before then waiting patiently for Tucker to leave third base. It took approximately :35 seconds for Tucker to step into his lead at third before Erceg applied the tag. Umpires Austin Jones and Ryan Wilhelms (plate) consulted after Erceg applied the tag and eventually decided that Tucker was out. Buies Creek Manager Omar Lopez was ejected after arguing the result of the decision. The out was the second of the seventh inning, in a game the Mudcats eventually won 3-0 (they led 2-0 before the play). The play was featured on MLB Network, SportsCenter, Around the Horn, Highly Questionable and several other television programs. THE STREAK: Jake Gatewood was held hitless on Monday, May 15 and snapped a 23-game hitting streak. The streak was the longest of Gatewood’s career and matched the Carolina Mudcats franchise record for consecutive games with a hit, tying Bryson Myles of the 2013 Mudcats (7/15/13-8/11/13). Gatewood hit .372/.443/.628 (32-for-86) with 18 runs, 10 doubles, four home runs, 14 RBIs, 11 walks and a 1.071 OPS during the streak. A NOT SO HUMBLE DEBUT: Catcher Cooper Hummel made his 2017 season debut on May 18 and finished a single shy of the cycle while going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, a home run (attached), two runs and two RBIs. He doubled and scored a run in the third, tripled and drove in a run in the fourth, walked in the sixth and hit a two-run home run with two outs in the eighth. He also caught five pop outs, picked off a runner at first and reached base safely in all four of his at bats. PROSPECTS GALORE: The Mudcats currently have 10 players ranked on MLB.com's list of top 30 Brewers prospects; 4 of which ranking in the Brewers top 10. The plethora of top rated Brewers prospects with Carolina include outfielder Corey Ray, infielder Isan Diaz, outfielder Trent Clark and third baseman Lucas Erceg. Ray is currently ranked as the 2nd best prospect in the Brewers system by MLB.com, followed by Diaz (5), Clark (6) and Erceg (7). Each of which are also ranked in the top 10 among Brewers prospects according to both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus. Also ranking among MLB.com’s top 30 Brewers prospects are pitchers Marcos Diplan (11), Cody Ponce (15), Kodi Medeiros (18), Freddy Peralta (19), Trey Supak (30) and infielder Jake Gatewood (25). FIRST TIME: The Mudcats are currently in year one of a two-year player development agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee’s previous Class-A Advanced team was the Florida State League’s Brevard County Manatees (FSL, 2005-2016). The 2017 season marks the first year that Milwaukee has had a MiLB affiliate in the Carolina League.
