In front of the fourth-largest Southern League crowd in the 15-year history of the ballpark and the largest since 11,837 attended on April 18, 2008, the Jumbo Shrimp’s Independence Day Eve included a pregame Stahl-Meyer All-American Eating Contest, a patriotic Jumbo Shrimp cap giveaway and the postgame fireworks. The Jumbo Shrimp (3-9 second half, 31-49 overall) took the lead in the bottom of the third inning against Montgomery left-hander Matt Krook. Right fielder John Norwood doubled down the third-base line, went to third base on catcher Rodrigo Vigil’s sacrifice and scored on third baseman Brian Schales’ RBI single. Serving as his team’s opener, Krook allowed three hits and no walks with five strikeouts the first three innings. Right hander J.D. Martin (5-9), normally a starter, pitched five innings in his first relief outing of the season, scattering four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Right-hander Yoel Espinal pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save for Montgomery (8- 4, 45-37). Jacksonville right-hander Jeff Brigham (3-1) held the 1-0 lead until the fifth inning, when Biscuits right fielder Nathan Lukes hit a one-out single, catcher Mac James hit a two-out infield single, and designated hitter David Rodriguez hit a game-tying RBI single. In the sixth inning, Biscuits shortstop Jake Cronenworth hit a one-out single, Brigham hit second baseman Nick Solak with a pitch, and Lowe hit a two-run double to right-center field. Brigham allowed a season-high three earned runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in four innings. Miller has hit safely in 11 of 12 games played for the Jumbo Shrimp since joining the club in the second half, and is currently riding a five-game hitting streak, reaching safely in the final five games of the Biscuits series. Additionally, three of the games that he has hit safely he has had multi-hit games against the Biscuits. Miller was a 2018 Florida State League Midseason All- Star with Jupiter, where in 62 games hit .324 with 29 runs batted in along with 13 doubles, three triples, and 19 stolen bases. At time of promotion ranked first in the Florida State League in hits (83), third in FSL in average (.324), second in at-bats (256), third in stolen bases (19). Miller was selected by the Marlins just last year in the 2017 draft, picked in the first round. Roster Moves: Right-handed pitcher Jordan Yamamoto has been transferred from High-A Jupiter to Jacksonville. After beginning the season on the disabled list, Yamamoto was 4-1 with a 1.55 ERA in seven starts for the Hammerheads. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Ryan Newell has been transferred from rookie level Batavia to Jacksonville. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet has been transferred from Jacksonville to High-A Jupiter. Poteet has made 15 stars for the Jumbo Shrimp, going 2-9 with a 5.95 ERA in his 75 and two-thirds innings of work. Also left-handed pitcher Chris Reed was released by the Marlins. Hello BayBears: Today begins the third of four series this season between the Jumbo Shrimp and the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. Earlier this season the Jumbo Shrimp won three out of four games played in the first home series of the year from April 11-14. The game on Sunday April 15 was postponed due to rain, creating the need for a doubleheader on Friday May 18. During the second series, the BayBears won four out of six games against the Jumbo Shrimp from May 18 to May 21. The BayBears do not return to Jacksonville, and the Jumbo Shrimp will make a return trip to Mobile from July 28-August 1. Last year Jacksonville had a winning record against Mobile, going 14-7 overall. The clubs split the two series at Hank Aaron Stadium 5-5, while the Jumbo Shrimp were 9-2 against the BayBears at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville last season. TONIGHT’S  JUMBO  SHRIMP  STARTING  PITCHER  43  –  MAX  DUVAL,  RHP                                    2-­7,  7.11  ERA,  14  games  and  10  starts   2018: 2-7, 7.11 ERA (45 ER/57.0 IP) in 14 G and 10 GS. 2018 vs. MOB: 0-0 3.60 ERA (2 ER/5.0 IP) in 1 G and 1 GS. CAREER: 10-14, 4.33 ERA (84 ER/174.1 IP) in 35 G and 28 GS. CAREER vs. MOB: Same. BACK IN ROTATION: Duval makes the start tonight against the Mobile BayBears after he was recently back in Jacksonville’s bullpen. During the last series against the Biscuits he took the loss in Game Two of Jacksonville’s doubleheader on Sunday July 1. In that outing he worked an inning where he allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits with a walk as Jacksonville lost 18-9 in the seven inning game.

BACK AND FORTH: Duval continues to shift back and forth between the starting rotation and the bullpen. Duval recently was in Jacksonville’s bullpen, going 0-2 with a 15.95 ERA in his four relief outings. Duval’s first eight outings this season were starts in Jacksonville’s rotation, going 1-5 with a 6.42 ERA, striking out 38 batters in his 40 and two-thirds innings of work. Jacksonville was 2-6 in those starts. Overall as a starter Duval is 2-5 with a 5.80 ERA in his 10 starts.

MINOR LEAGUE CAMPING PROJECT: During this past offseason, Duval lived in an RV given to him by his mom to use as a home, he was trying to avoid signing a lease for the offseason. Duval lived in the RV with his friend and trainer Kevin Mixon, with the 29-foot motorhome parked just outside of Salinas, California and near their training facility. The RV did not have a shower or toilet, but found ways to make it doable. Duval detailed his offseason in the RV with a blog “The Minor League Offseason Camping Project” which can be found online at minorleaguecampingproject.wordpress.com., and he has continued blogging into the 2018 season, giving insights on his experience as a Jumbo Shrimp pitcher.

Signed by the Marlins as a minor league free agent on July 28, 2017. 2017 Highlights: Started the season pitching for the Evansville Otters in the independent Frontier League. With Evansville, Duval went 8-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 14 starts, striking out 113 batters in 87 innings of work and he won the 2017 Frontier League Brian Tollberg Award for Most Valuable Pitcher, and he was also a Frontier League All-Star. After he signed with the Marlins on July 28, he went 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in six starts for the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. Came within two outs of a seven inning perfect game on August 9, 2017. He retired the first 19 batters he faced before ultimately allowing a run on two hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game win. 2016 Highlights: Started the season pitching for the Evansville Otters in the independent Frontier League, where he was 4-1 with a 4.40 ERA in seven starts. Signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a minor league free agent on June 23, 2016. Pitched at four different levels of the Diamondbacks organization, making one relief outing with High-A Visalia where he was 1-0 with a 9.64 ERA, going 2-6 with a 3.02 ERA in 10 starts for the Single-A Kane County Cougars, then with Short Season Class A Hillsboro had no wins or losses and a 7.36 ERA in two appearances and one start, then also two appearances and a start for the AZL Diamondbacks, going 1-1 with a 1.13 ERA in two appearances and one start. All of his moving around different affiliates mainly happened in a 14-day span in late June and early July. 2015 Highlights: Split the season pitching in the Frontier League, making four appearances with the Shaumberg Boomers where he had no wins or losses and a 13.50 ERA. He also pithed for the Frontier Greys, where he was 1-3 with a 3.51 ERA in 15 appearances and eight starts. The Greys were a team that played strictly road games in the Frontier League, hence the name Greys after the traditional road jersey color. 2014 Highlights: Duval made his professional baseball debut pitching for the Schaumburg Boomers in the independent Frontier League, with no wins or losses and a 6.75 ERA in three relief outings. College: Started college career at Cuesta College before transferring to Hawaii for his junior season. At Hawaii in 2012 he hit .186 with one home run and 18 RBI as an infielder. At the plate in 2013, Duval hit .192 with no homers and 3 RBI. He also pitched that season, with no wins or losses and a 6.48 ERA in six games in relief. After college considered quitting baseball but mom encouraged him to keep playing, which landed him in independent baseball to give pitching a real chance. Personal: During this past offseason, Duval lived in an RV given to him by his mom to use as a home, he was trying to avoid signing a lease for the offseason. Duval lived in the RV with his friend and trainer Kevin Mixon, with the 29-foot motorhome parked just outside of Salinas, California and near their training facility. The RV did not have a shower or toilet, but found ways to make it doable.
