TODAY’S STARTER: Ofelky Peralta makes his 10th start of the season for Delmarva tonight. It will be his 32nd career appearance and 31st career start. He has an electric fastball and the Orioles are hoping to see him continue his development, as he just turned 19 years old in mid-April. He has worked in rookie ball each of the last two seasons, so this is his first full season of pro ball. In 2014, he pitched for the Orioles affiliate in the Dominican Summer League as a 17 year old. Last season in 2015, he pitched for the Gulf Coast League Orioles. The Shorebirds seem to play well as a team when Peralta pitches - even though he has a 2-2 record, the team is 7-2 in games that he starts.

ARSENAL: 2-seam Fastball, 4-seam fastball, slurve, circle change

LAST OUTING: For the first time in nine starts, Peralta struggled during his last outing against Lakewood. The young right-hander couldn’t command his fastball consistently on the bottom of the zone, and the BlueClaws took advantage. Still, his defense could’ve helped him out. He allowed a pair of runs to score after an error in the second inning and he surrendered two unearned runs in the third frame. He left after throwing 81 pitches and 50 strikes in four innings and took his second loss of the season.

AGAINST THE GRASSHOPPERS: This is Peralta’s second career outing against Greensboro. His first one was memorable, as he earned his first professional win on May 12th against the Grasshoppers. In that affair, Peralta threw five innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits, while striking out six.

In his last outing though, Jimenez allowed just one run in 5.2 innings on three hits. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out four, earning the win against Lakewood last Saturday. More information on Jimenez is on the following page.

TONIGHT’S STARTER: Francisco Jimenez gets the ball from Ryan Minor this evening in game two. Jimenez was signed as an international free agent by the Baltimore Orioles in 2011 and made his debut in the Dominican Summer League in 2012. Jimenez has slowly increased his innings load and has put together a nice professional resume thus far. In his career, he sports a 17-16 record with a 3.17 ERA. Jimenez’s best outing last year came in his penultimate start when he picked up his first career win as a Shorebird. He fired seven shutout innings against eventual league-champion Hickory, scattering just two hits and allow-ing no walks. Jimenez was transferred from Aberdeen to Delmarva in mid-August and made four starts for the Shorebirds at the end of last season. This will be his 13th career start in the South Atlantic League.

ARSENAL: 2-Seam Fastball, 4-Seam Fastball, Slurve, Split Change

LAST OUTING: After struggling against Greensboro a week and a half ago, Jimenez returned home and returned to form. He found great success against Lakewood on Saturday night, allowing just one run one three hits over 5.2 innings. Two of the hits came back-to-back to lead off the third inning (both were doubles), but he answered by retiring the next 11 in a row. Jimenez only threw 69 pitches, of which 50 were strikes.

CAREER AGAINST THE GRASSHOPPERS: Jimenez has faced Greens-boro three times, all this season. In his first outing on April 20th, he shut out the Grasshoppers through six innings to earn the win. He scattered just three hits in that contest and allowed runners to reach scoring position just once in six innings. On May 13th, Jimenez was less effective, but battled through the trouble and took a no-decision. He allowed four earned runs on three hits over 5.0 innings, while walking four and fanning four. Last time against them on May 23rd, Jimenez gave up a first inning grand slam and the wheels fell off. He allowed seven runs on five hits over five innings.

MANAGER RYAN MINORMinor, 42, returns for his eighth season on the Shorebirds coaching staff, and his sixth as the team’s manager. In 2015, he led the Shorebirds to 71 wins, the most victories for the franchise since 2009. This is Minor’s second stint in Salisbury, having previously managed the Shorebirds for three seasons (2010-12) and spent two seasons (2008-09) as the hitting coach for the Shorebirds. In between, he managed the Frederick Keys (Advanced-A) in 2013.

During his tenure as manager of the Shorebirds, the team compiled 302 wins, the most of any Delmarva manager. Minor aided the development of current Orioles, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, who played for the Shorebirds in 2011. Minor, a longtime resident of Salisbury with his wife Allyson and two children Reagan and Finley, enjoyed a four-year run in the major leagues from 1998 through 2001. He spent his first three years with the Orioles and his final season with the Montreal Expos.

Minor’s playing career is best remembered for replacing Cal Ripken, Jr. at third base on September 20, 1998 when the consecutive games streak of 2,632 came to a close.

The Orioles drafted Minor in the 33rd round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma. In 1997, he played for Shorebirds and was an SAL All-Star third baseman. He batted .307 with 24 home runs and 97 RBIs. Minor still owns the fran-chise single season records for doubles (42).

Minor also owns a decorated college bas-ketball career. He is seventh all-time in scor-ing at Oklahoma with 1,946 points. He was selected in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1996 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

REELIN AND DEALIN: The Shore-birds pitching staff has been argu-ably their asset this season. They currently have the league’s second best ERA (3.14), most saved games (18), third most strikeouts (454), fewest HR allowed (20) and sec-ond fewest hits allowed (379 in 51 games).

STREAKY DEFENSE: Delmarva’s defense has either been superb or costly as the first half of the season nears the halfway point. Of the 41 errors the ‘Birds have committed, seven came in the first two games of the year and 24 have come in the last 26 contests. In the other 24 games, Delmarva has tallied just nine errors and 26 total errorless games. Catcher Yermin Mercedes is the league leaders defensively at his position.
