THE IT TEAM: WHO WE ARE

• The IT team stand for "Information Technology"

• We explore & study the use of system technology

• Especially ones related to:

(computers, telecommunication, system software, networks, hardware

data manipulation / distribution)

• - Pretty much anything that deals with technology.

• " Unfortunately, If electricity runs through it, then we are responsible."

THE IT TEAM WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE:

3D Printing

OVERVIEW

• What is 3D Printing ?

• Brief History

• Technology of 3D Printing

• Industrial V.S Personal printing

• Current Applications of 3D Printing

• Future Of 3D Printing

WHAT IS 3D PRINTING?

• It is a new technology introduced to creating 3D printed objects.

• It works the same way as a regular printer except it creates 3 dimensional objects.

• 3D printing is also known as "Additive Manufacturing."

- It uses a process to create an object, by laying down successive

layers of material until the whole object is created.

Page 6: Career Prep Exit Project

BRIEF HISTORY

• Problem with Manufacturing:

- Subtractive Methods

(The province of machining and generating exact shapes with high precision)

• MIT developed new technology at company called 3D systems (1980s & 1990s)

• CAD or "Computer Aided Design" is a software created to aid machinery.

• Result: Additive Manufacturing AKA 3D manufacturing

• - Rapid Prototyping

( Manufacturing is no longer limited by subtractive methods when generating complex shapes with high precision)

TECHNOLOGY OF 3D PRINTING

3 Methods for 3D Printing

1. FDM: "Fused Deposition Modeling"

2. SLA: "Stereo-lithography"

3. SLS: "Selective Laser Sintering"

Page 8: Career Prep Exit Project

FUSED DEPOSITION MODELING (FDM)

• Technology uses plastic filament or metal wire unwound from a coil.

1. coil is unwound to extrusion nozzle which can turn flow on or off.

2. coil is heated to melt the material and can be moved in x y plane.

3. Operated by CAM software

4. Material hardens immediately after extrusion.

• FDM was invented by Scott Crump in1988

• Also known as (FFF) Fused Filament Fabrication

STEREO-LITHOGRAPHY (SLA)

• Main technology use “photo-polymerization”

(Producing solid part from a liquid)

1. Employs liquid ultraviolet curable photo-polymer resin.

2. UV laser to build the objects layers 1 at a time.

In summary: The liquid being exposed to UV laser solidifies the liquid

and help join layers below.

• Technique was invented in 1986 by Charles Hull.

SELECTIVE LASER SINTERING (SLS)

• Technology uses high power laser to fuse small particles:

( Plastic, metal, ceramic or glass powders )

• Produce mass that has a the desired 3D design.

• Laser selectively fuses the powdered material by scanning cross sections.

• All untouched powder remains as it becomes a support structure.

• No need for support structure ( SLS & SLA )

• Developed by Dr. Carl Deckard in 1980s.

CURRENT APPLICATIONS

• While Home and office printing is still experimental and creative

• Industrial application of 3d printing takes on new innovation

• Some of the industrial uses of 3D printing today includes:

- Medical usage

- Automobile

- Construction

CONSTRUCTION

1. "New York City architect/contractor Adam Kushner begins construction of the first ever 3D printed estate, which features a 3D printed swimming pool, 4-bedroom, 2400 square foot home, and more."

2. "Chinese company Win Sun decoration & design engineer has constructed a set of ten single story, 3D-printed homes which it produced in under 24 hours. The homes, printed in prefabricated panels which fit together on site, were created using Win Sun's custom-built 3D printer which measures 10 meters by 6.6 meters, and took the company twelve years to develop."

FUTURE OF 3D PRINTING

FUTURE OF 3D PRINTING

3D printing tests the limits of human creation and may even go further.

Possibly beyond our understanding.

The freedom to create objects without limitation in shape creates an array of infinite results

There are creations that can be patterned in computers that go on beyond the limitation of human understanding.

The IT team cannot express these thoughts with simple words, we must show you ........
