President Jeff Adams: Jeff’s membership of the Balgowan Progress Association included the 2009/2010 & 2010/2011 terms on the committee followed by 2011/2012 as Vice President & Treasurer.2013/2014 until 2015/2016 as Vice president, & BPA President from 2016/2017 until 2019/2020. Some of the achievements that Jeff has been involved with are the comple-tion of the community tennis court, extension of the Rec.shed (plus improve-ments including air conditioning, extra freezers & fridges, activities equip-ment etc), upgrade of the entrance to the Rec shed & Bingo events. The new “Welcome to Balgowan” sign design & erection was overseen by Jeff. He was involved with the camping ground & playground improvements in-cluding working bees, upgrading the sites & parking area, installation of out-door gym equipment, permanent shade over the playground, a defibrillator located at the camping ground along with general maintenance of the ablu-tion block. New Year’s Day breakfast with the Balgowan CFS involved Jeff’s support as well as Citizen of the Year awards presentations. Other items that involved Jeff was the installation of a new flagpole & replacing the flag when re-quired, camping ground machinery purchase which included a new ride on mower, brush/hedge cutter unit, blower & other various items. Ice & gas cyl-inder exchange was also made available with Jeff as a contact to provide this service. The people’s choice community lottery was organised & adminis-tered by him. Possibly the biggest task for Jeff & the BPA committee was the negotiations with the Yorke Peninsula Council for the re-establishment of the north beach access ramp & south beach access steps after severe storms had destroyed the existing facilities. Jeff represented the BPA at various events (including the ongoing lobbing for the boat ramp to be upgraded), assisting with the south beach temporary shade installation, arranging the floating of the pontoon for the summer peri-od & general repairs & maintenance of BPA assets. Running the family farm “Bingo” would have taken up most of Jeff’s time, but he managed to enjoy participating in a variety of sporting clubs including football, cricket, golf & bowls not only as a player, but in management roles as well. He was involved in the Maitland Apex & Rotary service clubs, the Balgowan CFS, as well as a participant in the Variety club bash. Jeff always made time to enjoy family & friends. He will be sorely missed, but the legacy of his input to Balgowan & the wider community will remain.

A good man gone too soon.

BALVIEW HAVEN - Bill & Olive Braund’s Escape Having spent several years sitting on the North Beach at Balgowan while Bill went fishing we decided to establish a Shack. The McKnight and Bourne Families had already done so. In 1952 Bill acquired an annual lease for a block along the dune adjacent to the south beach. We were told by the Lands Department to measure it ourselves and no survey was required. Several other local families were also interested in acquiring a block. (Huntley & Jessie Moody, Jim & Shirley Francis, Osters, Ron & Nancy Klaebe, and 2 other spare blocks.) As measuring & establishing the blocks was so difficult Bill got a local earthmoving contractor (Bakers) to level off the top of the dunes. This of course would not be allowed today. Bill bought a 1909 “Bouncing Billy’ tramcar from the MTT as did Huntley Moody. Bill had our tram placed on stilts in the back yard of the E.J. Braund & Sons Bakery in Roberts St. Maitland where he renovated it. Miss Pearce’s Grade 3 class at Maitland Area School had an excursion to visit the tram before it was shifted down to its current location at 10 Esplanade Balgowan.

The class competition came up with the name for the Tram. “Balview Haven”

Renovations over the years included the repair & relocation of the public toilet from Pt Warrenne (someone pushed it over the cliff on New Years Eve) a double car shed made from iron from the grain stacks, a new roof and a back porch that housed the shower and laundry. After the Government of the day offered Life Tenure Shack Owners, Freehold, the 13 shack owners on the dunes presented their case to the Maitland Council. 10 years later we were successful in gaining freehold of our shack sites. Part of the responsi-bilities of Freehold was to establish a STED Scheme which we did on Old Dump Rd. This has since been gifted to the Council. Bill & Olive passed the tram to daughters Helen & Christine and their Families.

In 2010 with freehold we had the ability to put our powerlines underground, replace the car shed & add solar panels, reroof the tram and add a deck, bedroom, family room, inside toilet and a bathroom with HOT running water. Much of the Trams internal work, done by Bill and using original components, is still in use today. We are eternally grateful to Bill & Olive for their forethought and hard work in establish-ing and maintaining Balview Haven. In 2021 the 5th Generation will be using it. John & Christine Parry
