MESSAGE FROM MATT

Matt Corby, CEO

boxes, broadcast logistics…the list goes on. Within that planning, we will need to give close consideration

to the incorporation, composition and make-up of the new Committee, a discussion that has already

commenced with much of the current Committee at Strathalbyn. It’s vital that we set the Club up for

success, and the Committee will play a pivotal role in that respect.

One of the key challenges that we face relates to determining the optimal weekly schedule of Sky Racing

and trialling across all four of our TAB tracks once racing has commenced at Murray Bridge. A panel will

shortly be formed to contribute their thoughts to that model. I’m happy to have my coat tugged in the

meantime by anyone who wants to put forward their views regarding the key considerations which need

to be accounted for in that discussion. That group will consist of a balanced mix of professionals and

hobbyists, northerners and southerners (and some other parts of the compass), younger and….ahh….more

experienced trainers. From GRSA’s perspective, that process will be driven by two key objectives – ease

of participation for trainers and support of continued strong wagering outcomes – but there are a number

of other factors that will also inevitably weigh in. There will be no perfect ‘one-size-fits-all’ schedule but

rather a model which creates reasonable outcomes for participants at all levels in all regions and the

opportunity for us to develop strong and functional Clubs.

Industry Information and Engagement Sessions

I’m pleased to say that, after a couple of false starts, this edition of Kennel Capers includes the ad for GRSA

Industry Information and Engagement Sessions in early June which will be conducted at Gawler, Murray

Bridge (venue to be determined) and Mt Gambier. I would encourage participants to make all reasonable

efforts to attend one of these sessions. Each event will include strong representation from the Board and

Management and attendees will be afforded ample opportunity for Q&A. The topics will be very much

geared towards participant matters and will be light on for ‘preaching’. It will also be an opportunity for

our Managers to speak on recent breeder support payments and pending stakemoney increases and

how those changes will impact at the coalface of the sport. Please mark these dates in your calendar

when they have been announced.

Murray Bridge

There is a lot happening with the Murray Bridge venture and we

continue to be pleased with the progress of works at the site. At this

point of the project we will increasingly dig down into the operational

considerations of racing at Murray Bridge such as staffing, transport from

More feature race success for Rasmussen teamThe Tony Rasmussen team claimed another feature race win at headquarters on 29th of March when Ashom Monelli claimed the third running of the $7,000 Easter Cup final. In what was an outstanding final field assembled the son of Mogambo and Jackie Bale started one of the three main favourites alongside kennel mate Zudactyl Monelli and reigning SA Greyhound of the Year. On Fire for Cameron Butcher.

From the 600m boxes, Zudactyl Monelli bounced out nicely from box 2 to be hot on the heels of early leader Emily As for Captain Abbott while Ashom Monelli worked across from his wide box to move into third. Unfortunately, for On Fire supporters he was severely checked when crowded into the front straight and was spat out the back to last as the field raced down front straight. When leading, Emily As rolled off the fence leaving the front straight, presenting Ashom Monelli with a beautiful run along the inside to move into the lead. Zudactyl Monelli moved to the outside of Emily As making him cover more ground and was checked going past Emily As into the back straight. Spring Bloom for Greg Board started to make ground into third. Ashom Monelli pinched a race winning break down the

back straight as he turned for home in no danger. He went down to the finish line to win by 1¼ lengths in a slick 34.89 from kennel mate Zudactyl Monelli who was far from disgraced in second and continued to make ground over the later stages. Spring Bloom held on for third another 4 lengths away just a head of Tyla Grace for Liz Chegia, while the luckless On Fire still got home well into 5th with supporters putting a line through that performance.

Owned by Tim Aloisi and Matthew Lehman, Ashom Monelli has now won 22 races from 59 starts with 19 placings and career prizemoney of almost $95,000. Over the 600m middle distance at Angle Park he has now had 5 starts for 4 wins with Tony Rasmussen advising on the presentation dais that he will likely be stepped up in distance and target the heats of the SA Distance Championship over 731m on Thursday, 19th April along with kennel mate Zudactyl Monelli.

HONCHO MONELLITRAINER TONY RASMUSSEN

GREYHOUND

OF THE MONTH

March

Greyhound of the month for March was the Tony Rasmussen trained Honcho Monelli who stamped himself as the best sprinter in the State with 4 wins from 5 starts. The son of Mogambo and Jackie Bale started the month of with a 5th

in a heat of the Horsham Cup before heading back to SA. He then went undefeated at headquarters running sensational times. He won a Grade 5 in 29.60 by 11 lengths, with a run home of 12.43 which only a handful of greyhounds have achieved over the last 20 years. He then won his next three in open company running 29.42, 29.71 and 29.49 with an average winning margin of almost 5 lengths.

At the end of the month Honcho Monelli’s record stood at 77 starts with 19 wins and 33 placings and earnings just over $103,000.

The Run of the Month for March was Honcho Monelli for trainer Tony Rasmussen for his performance at Angle Park on Thursday, 15th March in a mixed Free For All event. He was slow out from box 8, however, quickly mustered speed leaving the front straight where he raced to the lead. From that point on there was no catching the flying machine as he raced away from his rivals to win by over 5 lengths in a blistering 29.42 with splits of 4.54 and 16.89. To be fair, he could have won the Run of the Month for a number of performances throughout the month including a 29.60 win against Grade 5 company where he ran 29.60 with an amazing run home of 12.43.

Racing ReportRacing Manager Shaun Mathieson

SA Distance and SA Anniversary Cup Heats – nominations close on MondayFeature racing continues at Angle Park this month with the running of the heats of the SA Distance Championship over 731m and the Bargain Steel Centre SA Anniversary Cup over 515m on Thursday, 19th April. Both finals will be run the following week on Thursday, 26th April which are open events worth $14,500 for the Distance with unplaced prizemoney and $13,750 for the Sprint with the winner collecting $10,000.

The honour role for both events are a who’s who of greyhound racing with Bogie Bekim winning the Distance Championship and On Fire taking out the Anniversary Cup last year.

* Nominations close on Monday, 16th April with GRSA at 9.00am.

One off heats conductedWhen graded heats are programmed in the All Tracks calendar GRSA makes every effort to run as many heats as possible, however, on occasion there may only be sufficient nominations to run one heat.

GRSA supports those that nominated by running this as a heat to final, should there be ten greyhounds eligible, the reserves are then considered for the final even if they did not compete in the heat. This policy has been determined by the Grading Review Panel previously, they also determined that if there were less than eight runners then this one off heat should not be programmed. This policy was brought about due to the Grade 5 heats on Wednesday to a Monday night final being knocked about by scratching’s and injuries, where a few years ago when less than eight runners were in a heat it resulted in the final being a three dog race. If a heat is not run, then a normal graded race would then be considered. This has been put into practice for subsequent series’.

2018 Group 3 Howard Ashton The major race for Breeders 2018 is the Group 3 Howard Ashton. Trainers are reminded that the heats will be run on Wednesday, 16th May. These will be followed by the Semi- Finals on May 24th and the $37,500 final on May 31st. Total prizemoney for heats and semis will be determined by the number of races run.

The race is for greyhounds that are eligible for Breeders 2018. Greyhounds don’t have to have competed in the Preludes to run in the Group 3 Howard Ashton.

* Nominations close on Friday, 11th May with GRSA at 9.00am.

Maidens Added To Angle Park Thursday NightsIn response to the recent greyhound nominations on Thursday nights GRSA has decided to add Maiden events to Thursday nights. GRSA will continue to monitor greyhound nominations and make changes as required.

Additional Maidens -

19/4/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m

26/4/18 - $2,200 Heats Open Maiden - 515m (3,190 Final 3/5)

3/5/18 - $3,190 Open Maiden Final - 515m (Heats 26/4)

Accell Therapy Mat now available at Angle ParkGRSA have been organising access for participants to an Accell Therapy mat at Angle Park. The mat is now available in the foyer area of the building.

It is recommended that a greyhound derives benefit with a 15 to 20 minute session and is generally for recovery from racing or injury. It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.

Next Low Grade Feature Heats The next low grade series at Angle Park will be run on Thursday, 3rd May with SA Bred Grade 5 Heats over the 515m.

The $4,590 final will be run on Thursday, 10th May.

*Nominations close on Monday, 30th April at 9.00am with GRSA.

Trial fees at race meetings from 1st AprilWith GRSA allowing for trials under certain conditions at race meetings, on occasions payment of these trials may have been overlooked.

From the 1st April any trainer trialling a greyhound at the race meeting will be required to pay staff as they would at a normal trial session. This will be consistent with all our racing and trialling meetings.

Kennel Capers APRIL 2018 7

Claiming race conditions availableSpecific claiming race conditions have been released for these events, but basically, greyhounds are graded into an event with a claiming price.

Prior to the event, new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts with any prizemoney won being retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race.

These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing.

Please check the most recent All Tracks calendar for the programming of these races.

Angle Park Tuesday trials now starting at 6pm From the most recent Industry Consultative Group meeting it was determined to start the Angle Park Tuesday night trials from 6pm for a 3 month trial period, this started on Tuesday, 6th March.

It was believed this would assist with the lateness of bookings and would also provide more flexibility for participants.

Trainers can book as normal online and by phone. GRSA however will support Satisfactory trials, Qualifying trials, Unproven & Proven trials and marking off of greyhounds with a block of 25 minutes around the same time as normal. (Trainers cannot nominate into this timeslot)

Therefore, there will be two blocks of trials from 6pm to 6.50pm allowing for 20 greyhounds to trial, after this staff will then conduct the Satisfactory Trials, Qualifying Trials and mark off greyhounds from 6.50pm to 7.15pm. This also provides an opportunity for GRSA to move the Unproven and Proven greyhound trials earlier in the night, which always used to be the case, where trainers can book into these either online or by phone. Then normal bookings will again commence from 7.15pm.

2016 AGRC/Greyhound Racing SA Greyhound Auction – Racing Dates The Main race series for greyhounds that were purchased through the 2016 Auction will be $4,590 heats run on Thursday, 7th June. The $19,000 final will be run on Thursday, 14th June 2018.

In a lead up to the main series there will be a heat and final run at Angle Park over the 388m in May.

The $1,025 heats will be run on Wednesday, 2nd May with the $3,000 final the week later on Wednesday, 9th May.

There will be another series to be run in July or August over 515m for $1,130 heats and then the final is worth $5,000. These dates are yet to be confirmed.

Syndication interest from trainersGreyhound Racing SA is interested in gaining feedback from trainers who would be interested in having their details made available to any prospective syndicate groups.

GRSA receives a number of query’s from owners about getting involved with their friends however it is quite hard for them to find a trainer. Those trainers who are comfortable with this please respond to Shaun Mathieson via email [email protected] or phone (08) 8243 7100. These details would only be made available to syndicate groups.

Handling greyhounds at the trials while lure in motion A reminder to participants that when on course for any trial sessions that the lure could be in motion at anytime. Please be mindful of your surroundings and also with your greyhounds ensuring you have full control at all times.

Along with the white caps GRSA has now approved that black caps can be worn by participants.

Both black and white caps with GRSA logos are available from GRSA at a cost of $10.

INTEGRITY

GRSA has a fundamental responsibility to ensure full rehoming of greyhounds and we have committed to that outcome being delivered. As of 1 May 2018, GRSA will introduce Local Rules ensuring every greyhound in this state has the opportunity to be rehomed. As a result, the only acceptable reasons for euthanising a greyhound in South Australia will be because of serious injury, serious illness, by court order or because of an unsuitable temperament for rehoming (as identified by GAPSA).

In order to accommodate all greyhounds, GAPSA has made significant progress in terms of GAP resourcing, reduced waiting times for foster care and the subsidy for greyhounds on the waiting list beyond six weeks. Testing opportunities have been increased in all parts of the state. Participants have seen these positive changes rolling out for some time. This preparation means that whilst an increase in the number of greyhounds requiring assessment is expected to increase, GRSA is ready to implement the new Rules and be able to ensure all participants are able to comply with the requirements. The impact upon assessment and availability and waiting times will be monitored and resourcing adjusted as required.

GRSA participants should take pride from the fact that our state holds animal welfare at the highest standard and requires, expects and encourages all participants to take responsibility for their greyhounds – during and after racing. Our approach to rehoming is the foundation from which the SA industry can move forward with confidence and respect.

In an effort to provide information about the Local Rules, a number of Frequently Asked Questions have been addressed below:

Q: Why are these Local Rules necessary?

A: GRSA has a fundamental obligation to every greyhound to ensure that it has the opportunity to be rehomed.

Q: What does this mean for me?

A: A majority of industry participants have been doing the right thing and have been rehoming their greyhounds – either through GAP or third parties. If you have been doing this, then it won’t affect you.

Q: I have always attempted to rehome my greyhounds with owners or third parties. Can I continue to do this?

A: Absolutely! This is so important and a large number of greyhounds find suitable homes post-racing through the hard work of Trainers and Owners. These numbers contribute to a significant number of rehomed greyhounds.

Q: If my greyhound has been rehomed to a third party, does it need to be GAP assessed?

A: No – we trust Trainers and Owners to ensure they are responsibly rehoming greyhounds to suitable homes. However, we would always encourage the new owner to contact GAP to consider options for obtaining a green collar.

GRSA regularly contacts the new owner of a greyhound which has been retired through a Trainer or Owner as part of its broader tracking requirement. This also gives the opportunity for feedback about the interaction during the rehoming and information about how the greyhound is settling in to their new home.

Q: I am a Trainer. Can I keep my greyhound as a pet myself?

A: Absolutely! The greyhound does not need to be assessed for GAP. Please lodge a Notification of Retirement form within ten (10) working days of the retirement.

Q: I want to retire a female greyhound for breeding. Does she need GAP tested to become a breeding female?

A: No – lodge a Notification of Retirement within ten working days of the retirement. You would then need to apply for a Pink Card which will register her as a breeding female.

Greyhound Rehoming Obligations resulting in new Local Rules

Continued next page..

I NTEGRIT Y

Q: What if I have an unraced, unnamed greyhound which will not be suitable for racing? What are my options?

A: The greyhound can be rehomed to a third party. If this is not an option, the greyhound must be assessed by GAP – this will give direction on whether it is suitable to be rehomed by GAP.

Q: What if my greyhound has a serious injury or illness and it needs urgent medical treatment?

A: Your first responsibility is to ensure the greyhound has appropriate veterinary treatment. If in the opinion of the treating Veterinarian that the greyhound injury or illness is so severe that it is in the best interests of the greyhound for it to be euthanised, then this is an acceptable reason. A veterinary certificate of euthanasia (with information detailing the injury or illness) must be provided to GRSA with the prescribed Notification of Euthansed Greyhound form. GRSA will follow- up with the Veterinarian for more information, if necessary.

Q: How long does my greyhound have to stopped racing for before it can be assessed by GAP?

A: A greyhound must have not raced for a period of ten (10) days before being assessed.

Q: My greyhound is aggressive and I know it won’t pass GAP. Can I just get it euthanised?

A: No. We all have an obligation as part of the greyhound racing industry to ensure every greyhound is given an opportunity to be rehomed. The greyhound is required to be tested by GAP to assess its suitability for rehoming.

Q: What if my greyhound fails its GAP assessment?

A: The success rate of passing assessments are high. For the small number of greyhounds that fail the testing, GAP staff will provide the Trainer with paperwork detailing the fail. Once in receipt of this paperwork, the Trainer and Owner have the option to euthanise the greyhound without breaching GRSA Rules. A Notification of Euthanased Greyhound form, a Vet Certificate of Euthanasia and the GAP paperwork must be submitted to GRSA within two (2) working days.

Q: What if GAPSA advises me at the first assessment that the greyhound needs to come back for further assessment?

A: The greyhound must then be presented for reassessment. If a greyhound has failed the first assessment but the GAP assessors/staff have indicated the greyhound should be represented, this must be done in accordance with the timeframe indicated. GAPSA will provide a realistic timeframe for reassessment.

During this period, GAP will provide information on how to work with the greyhound to prepare it for success at its second assessment.

Q: What are my options when a greyhound fails its second GAP assessment?

A: On the second fail, GAPSA will advise the Trainer in writing of the greyhound’s unsuitability to be rehomed through the program. The Trainer and Owner will have the option to euthanise the greyhound on behavioural grounds.

Q: What if I can’t get an assessment with GAP? Can I euthanise my greyhound?

A: No – you will be committing a breach of the Rules.

Q: What if I choose to euthanise a healthy greyhound without going through the process as specified?

A: The matter will be referred to GRSA Stewards as you may have breached either Local or National Rules. The matter will likely result in a Stewards inquiry. Strong action has been taken in other states for participants who have failed to comply with similar rules – including disqualification of licenses.

Q: The owners told me to euthanise a fit and healthy greyhound as they don’t want to put it through GAP. What do I do?

A: A direction of that nature from the owner does not circumvent the requirement to rehome. The Rules state that the Responsible Person is the person who has the care, custody and control of the greyhound. The Trainer will be required, as well as the Owner, to ensure they comply with the relevant Rules.

Kennel Capers APRIL 2018 11

Q: I have been asked to provide more information in relation to the euthanasia of a greyhound. Do I have to?

A: The GRSA Integrity department monitors the euthanasia rate and reasons for all registered participants. On occasions, participants will be asked for more information or evidence in relation to reasons for a euthanasia of a greyhound. Sometimes this is asked to be provided in a Statutory declaration. If you have been directed to provide this information and fail to do so, you may be in breach of GRSA Rules and your licensing conditions.

Q: Does GRSA has the right to order an autopsy on a euthanised or deceased greyhound?

A: Stewards can order an autopsy, if they believe it is warranted.

Q: Have the timeframes in relation to the reporting of retirement and euthanasia changed?

A: No – the Controlling Body must be notified within ten (10) working days of a retirement and two (2) working days of a euthanasia.

Q: Where do I find a copy of the new Local Rules in relation to Greyhound Rehoming Obligations?

A: A copy is on the GRSA website under Integrity – Rules and Policies. As of 1 May 2018, an updated Rulebook will be available on the website or at GRSA. Information will also be distributed during kennel inspections.

Q: Who should I contact at GRSA to find out more information?

A: Any member of the Animal Welfare team on 8243 7100 or [email protected]

Yeardley is a fawn bitch out of Bartrim Bale x Sealin' the deal She raced 32 times for 9/2/4 best time at Angle Park 29.84

Yeardley's mother Sealin' The Deal was a flying machine. She won her first three races in emphatic style taking out the heat/semi/final of Vic bred Maiden series at Shep with a combined winning margin of 26 lengths. She

unfortunately broke down in just her 4th start and had to be retired.

Sealin' the deal had 3 litters in total and her litter to El Grand Senor was an outstanding litter. She produced:

Valladares - 40 starts 16/5/2 Highlight being a finalist in the 2014 GROUP 1 Adelaide Cup - won $33,000 in prizemoney

El Grand Seal - 43 starts 19/9/5 Highlight running second in the GROUP 2 Healsville cup - won $63,000 in prize money.

In total there was 9 in the litter and they won a total of 71 races.

Given the 'click' with the line we have decided to go back to El Grand Senor with Yeardley in the hopes to produce another nice litter.

2 Bitches (1 Black and 1 fawn) remain from a litter of 9 and are sensibly priced for a quick sale at $2000 each. Pups have turned 14

weeks and they are ready to go now.

!JOKE OF THE MONTH

A lawyer and a blonde woman are sitting next to each other on the plane from Cairns to Perth. That's a very long flight so in the end the lawyer decides to make some conversation and asks the blonde if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde is tired and just wants to take a nap, so she politely declines and tries to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists, that the game is a lot of fun. "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me only $5; you ask me one, and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you $500."This catches the blonde's attention, and- to keep him quiet- she agrees to play the game. The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the Earth to the Moon?"The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches in to her purse, pulls out a five-dollar bill, and hands it to the lawyer. Now, it's the blonde's turn. She asks the lawyer, "What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?" The lawyer uses his laptop, searches all references. He uses the Airphone; he searches the Net and even the Library of Congress. He sends e-mails to all the smart friends he knows, all to no avail. After one hour of searching he finally gives up. He wakes up the blonde and hands her $500. The blonde takes the $500 and goes back to sleep. The lawyer is going nuts not knowing the answer. He wakes her up and asks, "Well, so what goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four?"The blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5 and goes back to sleep.

Racing Statistics - March 2018MARRING: 3 FAILING TO PURSUE: 5 SWABS TAKEN MARCH 2018: 144

Bed and bedding requirements for all greyhoundsRecently, during a small number of kennel inspections, Welfare Compliance Officers have been disappointed to find a number of racing greyhounds and other greyhounds without appropriate beds or bedding.

Your attention should be drawn to The South Australian Greyhound Industry Animal Welfare Policy which states:

All housing areas must be provided with a weatherproof sleeping area containing raised beds to insulate greyhounds from the floor. Appropriate warm, clean, vermin resistance bedding must be provided and maintained. All bedding must be cleaned regularly and kept dry.

Failure to adhere to the policy is a breach of licensing conditions and in the first instance, the issue will be addressed verbally and followed-up in a letter. Repeated breaches of this requirement and failure to comply can result in further action being taken.

Marking officialsRecently, GRSA has become aware of some delay in the booking of marking officials to undertake microchipping and ear branding of litters.

Breeders should be ensuring they are allowing plenty of time to ensure litters are marked within the timeframes specified under the National Rules. As advertised recently in Kennel Capers, fines have been increased for the late lodgement of paperwork.

Participants should also note GRSA is considering options in relation to increasing numbers of marking officials. Any participants interested in being considered to be trained to undertake these duties should make an expression of interest in writing to Lisa Michalanney by 30 April 2018.

Satisfactory trials over shorter distancesTrainers should be aware from November 2016, in an effort to give greyhounds which have failed to perform over a longer distance, Stewards do allow greyhounds to re-qualify over a shorter distance.

Please advise the Stewards at the time of the trial of your intention as you will have the successful trial distance recorded for the greyhound. After requalifying, greyhounds will only be permitted to nominate for races upto that requalifying distance.

Changes to RulebooksAny industry participant with a Rulebook is welcome to drop in to GRSA reception for it to be updated with the 1 April 2018 changes. This service is provided free of charge.

Auditing of third party retirementsParticipants should note greyhounds which have been retired as pets to third parties (owners, friends, through internet ads), the Animal Welfare department regularly contacts the new owner to ensure these are genuine adoptions.

As much contact information should be provided as possible to GRSA to ensure this process is able to be undertaken and provide certainty around the rehoming of greyhounds.

Elective testingThe Integrity department can provide assistance for any trainers who want an elective sample collected from a particular greyhound for testing.

This is particularly useful for new greyhounds coming into kennels from other trainers. The process from collection of the sample to notification of results takes about two weeks. This can be organised by contacting the Integrity department.

Marketing MattersMarketing Manager Dianne Dumanovic

Greyhound Racing South Australia recently announced an exciting new partnership with locally based Operation Flinders Foundation, a South Australian based charitable organisation which transforms the lives of young people through world leading outback intervention programs. The money raised from GRSA’s fundraising endeavours will go towards the funding of wilderness treks in the far northern Flinders Ranges, providing young men and women who have been identified as being ‘at risk’ with demanding outdoor challenges with the aim of personal development so that they can grow to become highly valued members of the broader community. This unique program is typically a life-changing experience for the young people that it seeks to help.

During the month of April, GRSA will donate $250 every time the Number 1 (red rug) dog wins a race at any meeting across South Australia. Additionally, Operation Flinders will be provided with fundraising opportunities at GRSA’s Angle Park headquarters to further support the program. To date (as of April 11), $6250 has been raised.

Operation Flinders is dependent upon the partnerships that it forms with South Australian businesses. The ongoing support that it receives through those organisations enables it to offer life-changing opportunities to more than 500 young people annually.

We will be sure to keep you updated on the fundraising initiative’s progress.

Record crowd attends Mount Gambier Cup

Before a record crowd, Portland greyhound Xtreme Caution won Mount Gambier’s richest-ever race when leading all the way in the $22,000 Group Listed Mount Gambier Cup final over 512 metres at Tara Raceway on Sunday, 18th March.

Trained by Brian Weis and owned by Matt Morris, the $14 chance Xtreme Caution made full use of box one, defying Lektra Stomp and Galactic Panther in the home straight to score by three-quarters of a length in 29.95 seconds – the fifth-fastest time recorded in the 22 cups run at Lake Terrace East.

For Weis, it was his second Mount Gambier Cup win with Drone successful in 2009 and also finishing third the following year behind Kirkstall Jane.

Weis, who is currently training six of the “Xtreme” litter for NSW breeder Morris, makes no secret of the fact that he believes the cup winner, in his kennels since October last year, still has plenty of improvement in him.

“To be honest, I believe his potential is untapped,” he said. “I still reckon his condition is not quite right and as such there should be more improvement to come.”

For Weis, it had been a case of being reasonably confident in his cup heat the previous week but after being run down by Blazing Moment and qualifying for the final on the strength of one of the fastest seconds, he was the first to concede that the black dog would probably have the job ahead of him.

“I have to admit, though, after he drew box one in the final I thought that he might be some chance if the race was run to suit,” he said.

The cup win was a tremendously popular result with Weis a regular at Tara Raceway for a number of years.

“I can remember when we used to come over here to get the kibble money, such was the standard of racing. That’s not the case today, though, with the class of greyhound now significantly better.

“But for all that, this is a beautiful club and I love coming here.”

Weis also paid tribute to the support of his family – wife Sally and daughters Mandy and Sam.

“And I suppose I should mention my granddaughters, Alex and Zoe, they try to help.”

The cup winner collected $15,000 for connections, along with a service to the Group 1 winning champion Worm Burner.

Looking at the minor placegetters, the Phil Lenehan trained Lektra Stomp, lining up from box five on the back of a track record run the previous week in a heat, found himself well back early after a tardy start before storming home for second while Galactic Panther was always handy, eventually being beaten by only 1½ lengths

for trainer Steve Bartholomew.

Blazing Moment was another finalist well back early before working home strongly to finish fourth for Tracie Price. Race favourite, the locally-owned Print The Money, who once again drew a big crowd of supporters to the track, finished on in fifth spot.

Meanwhile, Hutch, who never really got into his heat last week when finishing fifth behind Print The Money and failing to qualify for the final, made amends in the Mount Gambier Cup Consolation.

Trained at Portland by Robert Halliday, Hutch, who was a finalist in last year’s cup, led all the way to defeat hot favourite Henry in a best of day 29.56 seconds.

Port Augusta returns to day meetings after twilight run

Port Augusta returned to day meetings on 7th April following a very successful twilight season which continues to attract Sponsors and local sporting teams and their supporters creating a wonderful atmosphere.

Next meeting is on 21st April featuring 447m Glad Butterfield Memorial, 591m Commonwealth Hotel Stake and 503m "Lest We Forget" Anzac Feature.

Acknowledgements and achievements for 2017 -

• Firstly, sincere thanks to Greyhound Racing SA for continued support. Without this support it would be impossible to continue greyhound racing in the north of the State. It is greatly appreciated.

• Leading Trainer award went to the very supportive Graham Brown from Whyalla. Graham also trained Greyhound of the Year with "Aussie Steel".

It was a special moment for the entire Brown family when "Aussie Steel" saluted the judge in the final event of the year to win the Max Brown Memorial named in honour of Graham's father - a long time supporter of greyhound racing in the north and in particular Whyalla. This win enabled Graham to hold on and win Greyhound of Year.

• Sincere thanks to Port Augusta City Council for continuing with their generous sponsorship of the Port Augusta Cup. Ben Rawlings was the winner with "Marley Bale". It was good to see good representation from Greyhound Racing SA on the day.

• The Patron's Cup sponsored by our very supportive Member for Stuart, Dan van Holst Pellekaan, was won by "Dundee Cobra" trained by Rolland Parry. Although Dan represents a huge electorate he always finds time to attend as many race meetings as possible and it is great to have him on our side. Thanks so much Dan.

• On Melbourne Cup Day we hosted new sponsor Lance Simpson from "On The Lure Transport" and the SGFL Premiers (South Augusta Football Club) and there is always plenty of atmosphere when they are around.

• Whyalla Cup saw victory to "Scottish Thistle" trained by the much travelled Michael Stewart with "Bangor Springs" trained by Ray Burgess winning the Glad Butterfield Memorial. To Gary and Lois Rawlings in partnership with Whyalla Funerals - thank you so much for your very generous contribution by way of sponsorship and general help.

• Terminal Operations and East West Social Club sponsored a wonderful Memorial day to support families of their departed members and Port Augusta Correctional Services Social Club were our guests to open the twilight season.

• To Tony and Christine Mitchell from Crossroad Concepts - thank you so much for your support with arranging race meeting promotions and any printing requirements.

• Sincere thanks to the following sponsors and supporters: Cunningham & Harvey Accounting, Pastoral Hotel, RadioTab, Port Augusta Veterinary Services, Ian's Chicken Hut, Commonwealth Hotel, JB Radiator and Windscreen Services, Fire & Equipment Maintenance Group, Augusta Can & Bottle Recyclers, Robert and Joan McSporran, Scott Feltus, Kay Versari, Pridham Family, Yvonne Maxwell, Don Turner, Gina and David Hall, Larry and Neeleen Thompson.

• We fare-welled long-time Stewards Dave Clayton and John Tee during the year. Thanks for the laughs and dedication over many years.

• On a sadder note we remember Lenny's brother Harold "Socky" Grantham - a leading trainer for many years and his success was instrumental in helping Port Augusta become a venue for greyhound racing in the north.

• To all the Trainers and Owners who regularly attend our meetings - thank you - your continued support is invaluable.

• Finally, to our amazing volunteers - it would be impossible to operate without you. A big thank you to Jenny, Vilma, Jane and Peter in the Canteen, Luane and Peter running the bar, Robert and Joan (publicity), Michael (photo finish), Kevin (race- caller), Daryl (photographer), Catherine (kennel-house), Lenny, Della, Eric, Ivan and Kathy.

GAWLER

From left to right; Jayne Jarman, Sean Nathan and Adam Manton with Rip It Ralph after a win at Gawler.

Kevin Murnane with Kansas Lane after a recent win at Gawler.

From left to right, Leanne Fagan, Greg Burrell, Danny Formosa and Goose Buzz after a win at Gawler.

The Paul and Leanne Fagan team enjoyed a great result at Gawler on Tuesday March 27 when they were able to lead in four winners for the day.

The first winner was Soi Si Bonne, which was able to lead all the way in race 3 over the 400m journey, to score at the big odds of $31 from Victa Caleb and Zipping Kim.

In race 6, also over 400m, Cash Producer from box 4, took over after the start to lead and achieve a three length victory over Desert Missile and Zoometrical. Cash Producer recorded the win at the good odds of $23.

Prancer Dancer was able to repeat the dose in the next event, again leading all the way from box 1, but this time in a much closer contest with the margin being just a neck. Second was Magical Strike and third was Wilby Dusty.

The final winner for the day was Goose Buzz, which like two of his kennel mates, led for the whole trip, this time from box 8, defeating Brilliant Bails by over two lengths into second place, with Emerley Jose third.

Goose Buzz is owned by Greg Burrell of Gulfview Heights, and is one of four greyhounds he has racing. Purchased as one of a pair of pups from Queensland, Goose Buzz has shown a liking for the Gawler track and the 400m distance, missing a place only once there in eight starts, winning four with three placings. Greg has been interested in the racing sports and decided on entering the greyhound industry as it is very affordable. He gets a big kick from having a runner, with a win putting the icing on the cake and still has his first greyhound, named Murrell Burrell, as a retired pet at home.

Fagans to the fore

The four winners are trained by Paul Fagan at Calomba, but in true teamwork, the duties of handling the dogs at the track fell to his wife Leanne today, as Paul was ill. Leanne is a trainer in her own right and was surprised at the odds on offer for the first two winners, but not the results. They had been running without success over the 500m trip and they had both appreciated the shorter distance today.

Paul and Leanne have a busy time with twenty greyhounds in work, plus rearing pups and looking after greyhounds awaiting placement in the Greyhound Adoption Program. However they still enjoy the industry and having this sort of result certainly helps. As for “Goose”, Leanne hopes to move him up to the 500m journey soon.

ANGLE PARKQUALIFYING TRIALS – NOW WEEKLYAngle Park Qualifying Trials are run weekly on Tuesday night, for the corresponding Monday APM meeting and the Wednesday APD meeting. Trainers must be specific on their nominations about which day they are trialling for and what distance. (ie Wed 388m, Mon 515, Mon 600m etc)

Tuesday Angle Park Qualifying dates are:

April 17th (for APM Monday meeting on 23rd April – no APD Wednesday meeting on 25th April due to Time Grading meeting) April 24th (for APM Monday meeting on 30th April – for APD Wednesday meeting on 2nd May) May 1st (for APM Monday meeting on 7th May – for APD Wednesday meeting on 9th May) May 8th (for APM Monday meeting on 14th May – for APD Wednesday meeting on 16th May) May 15th (for APM Monday meeting on 21st May– for APD Wednesday meeting on 23rd May) May 22nd (for APM Monday meeting on 28th May – no APD Wednesday meeting on 30th May due to Time Grading meeting)

Nominations close with GRSA at 12.30pm on the Tuesday of the meeting.

NOMINATING ONLINE FOR QUALIFYING TRIALS For Angle Park, Gawler and Strathalbyn qualifying trials the nominations must be lodged with GRSA by 12.30pm on the day of the meeting. To nominate online however you can only do this up until 11.59pm the day before. Due to a system security policy you cannot nominate on the day for these trials online. Please contact our staff if you have any issues with these nominations prior to them closing.

SINGLE TRIALS A reminder to trainers that single trials can be booked with two greyhounds however you need to advise when booking of your intention to do this. If you wish to put three or more into this trial then a field trial will have to be booked.

BOOKING NUMBER FOR TRIALS Participants wishing to book trials are required to ring 8243 7172, this phone line will only be used for trial bookings and will queue participants. By having this one number with participants queuing makes this process to be a more efficient way of booking trials.

There will be NO trials accepted through the normal administration number. To be fair to everyone GRSA will only accept bookings using the new number.

POLICY FOR TRIALS IN PLACE

Remember trials will only be taken from –

* 11.30am Monday for Angle Park Tuesday nights

* 11.30am Tuesday for Gawler Wednesday nights

* 11.30am Thursday for Angle Park Saturday morning (day earlier due to being morning trials)

* For Public Holidays it will be the working day before ie if Monday is a Public Holiday then bookings taken on the Friday

*trial days that are not booked in with GRSA remain the same process (ie Gawler Thursday)*

POLICY FOR TRIALLING AT ANGLE PARK AND GAWLER BEFORE THE RACE MEETINGRACE MEETING TRIAL POLICY Angle Park Monday & Wednesday along with Gawler Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

Two fields from the boxes with a maximum of four (4) greyhounds will be conducted immediately following the completion of the kennelling procedure for the Race Meeting.

The following lists the order in which greyhounds will be selected in the event if more than 8 greyhounds nominated.

1. Reserves at the Meeting that do not obtain starts.

2. Trainers that have greyhounds engaged and are located in an area affected by track closures.

3. Trainers that have greyhounds engaged.

4. Satisfactory trials.

5. Other greyhounds.

PROCEDURE/CRITERIA

1. For Monday nights trainer to contact GRSA between 10.00am and 11.00am on the Monday to nominate. Should the Monday be a public holiday bookings are to be made between 8am and 9am on the scratching line.

2. For Angle Park Wednesday, Gawler Tuesday & Friday trainer to contact GRSA between 4.00pm and 4.30pm on the day before.

3. For Gawler Sunday trainer to contact GRSA between 8.00am and 9.00am on the scratching line to nominate.

4. Other than reserve greyhounds Trainers will be restricted to trialling one (1) greyhound unless nominations determine otherwise.

5. Stewards allot the Box for the Greyhound.

6. Trials will be 515m & 531m in distance as first preference. Other distances considered depending on nominations.

7. Greyhounds currently under suspension or not cleared to race are not eligible to be nominated (these trials are conducted as if they are at a race meeting so all greyhounds need to be eligible at nomination time).

8. Greyhound registration certificate or cards must be produced at kennelling time.

9. Trainers with other greyhounds engaged can utilize the extra kennel space until such time they are ready to leave OR trainers with no other greyhounds will be free to leave following their trial.

Kennel Capers APRIL 2018 29

If there are 12 races at Angle Park or Gawler there will be NO trials.

The Vet Clinic at these meetings cannot be used to accommodate any greyhounds to allow for extra trialling greyhounds. This policy has been introduced so that participants book in under the policy. The Vet Clinic needs to be available for the Vet and Stewards at race meetings

EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY–

• Thursday nights are kept available for the option for Interstate greyhounds to solo trial in a lead up to our Group races and also local greyhound’s trialling for Group racing interstate.

• Local greyhounds will be allowed to solo trial in a lead up to a feature race upon request and they will take one of the eight kennels available for trialling ahead of the policy and sit separately to the 4 dog trials. Feature races are considered to be – Adelaide Cup, Gawler Cup, Oaks, Derby, Howard Ashton, Brian Johnstone, SA Sprint, SA Distance Championship, SA Anniversary Cup, SA Country Cup, National Finals & any Group race Interstate.

• Local greyhounds will be allowed to trial on a race night, where they are in preparation for a feature event and nominated for a meeting and the race does not stand up. This will include all distances and also take precedence over the policy.

• If a greyhound qualifies for a feature final and requires a trial in between this will be conducted as a solo trial and sit separately to the 2 four dog trials.

It is extremely important that trainers book in to trial at these race meetings. If unable to book in at these times then please contact GRSA where permission may be given to accept a booking outside of these times. .

GAWLER QUALIFYING TRIALS AT GAWLER

Qualifying trials are held every Wednesday for the corresponding Tuesday.

MURRAY BRIDGETrials are held on SUNDAY MORNINGS, from 9am to 10.30 am. Bookings MUST be sent via Telephone to Kay Burns 0437 497 554 or Bob Harris 0410 668 682 or email to [email protected]. If there are no bookings there will be no trials.

MOUNT GAMBIERThe Mt Gambier GRC committee advises that satisfactory trials can be run in the summer months under the criteria below.

1. On race days when there are less than 12 races.

2. On race days with 12 races when the temperature is 30 degrees or less trial can be run before the first race but greyhounds must leave the track straight after the trial to head back to their home kennel.

3. On a Saturday trial session when stewards are available.

These trials will have to be booked in with GRSA in consultation with the Mt Gambier GRC.

STRATHALBYNAll bookings for normal trials will be taken by the Club. You can book trials via text MSG / or call Yvonne King at the Club on 0407 334 349 between 9am and 11am on the day of the trials. The following dates are for the next trial sessions - Wednesday 18th April Wednesday 25th April Wednesday 2nd May (qualifying trials) Wednesday 9th May Wednesday 16th May Wednesday 23rd May Wednesday 30th May

DEMONSTRATING EXCELLENCE AT EVERY LEVELEstablished in 2001, we are an ever-growing, family-owned business with an enduring commitment to demonstrating excellence to each and every one of our customers, on each and every level. As a starting point, we offer our customers quality and selection; we offer a complete range of eminently affordable, quality steel products including fencing (including neighbour friendly, custom-made pool and post/rail options), verandas, sheds/outbuildings, roofing, miscellaneous materials and tools. To this we mix in a dose of convenience: not only do we offer a range of steel services, but have also expanded our facility over time, in order to offer our clients a still better selection across our product and service lines.

We know that maintaining our status as a leader in the industry doesn’t only involve maintaining a substantial product line — this is why, true to our Bargain Steel Centre name, we unceasingly work to keep our prices as affordable as possible, while also ensuring exceptionally good service, too. Simply put, we owe it to our customers to offer the best of all worlds through substantial selection, quality products, affordable prices, and exceptional service.
