The Vietnam War is a 10 part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. An immersive 360-degree narrative, the series tells the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 80 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides.

Ten years in the making, the series brings the war — and the chaotic era it encompassed — vividly to life. Written by Geoffrey C. Ward, produced by Sarah Botstein, Novick and Burns, it includes: rarely seen, digitally re-mastered, archival footage from sources around the globe; photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th century; historic television broadcasts; evocative home movies; and revealing audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations. The series features more than 100 iconic musical recordings from many of the greatest artists of the era and original music from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as the Silk Road Ensemble featuring Yo-Yo Ma.

The Vietnam War airs Sundays – Thursdays over two consecutive weeks, beginning Sept. 17 at 9 pm and 10:30 pm (11 pm some evenings – check listings) each evening.

KSPS Community Advisory Board

The KSPS Community Advisory Board provides valuable input to the Friends of KSPS (the station’s governing Board) about KSPS programming, community service initiatives and how the station’s outreach and other decisions impact the communities we serve.

For more information about the Community Advisory Board, or to apply for a spot on the Board, visit ksps.org and click the ‘About’ tab or email us — [email protected]

From the Board…Hello Friend,

The dog days of summer are dwindling at a rapid rate and so are our hours of daylight. I’m not happy about the decreased daylight but I’m not going to dwell on that. Instead, I’m going to remember a few special moments this summer — like the Fourth Annual KSPS FitKids Day. The event has grown from just a couple hundred attendees to just shy of 1,000; and I’m sure we would have had more if event access had not been complicated by road construction. It was so fun to see kids of all ages, from 3 weeks old to 75 years, playing games and delighting in meeting Daniel Tiger, Nature Cat and Aqua Duck!

And let us not forget the The Wall that Heals, the 250 ft. replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Spokane was so very fortunate to host this travelling memorial and mobile education center and pay tribute to all who served in the Vietnam War — especially those from the Inland Northwest. The timing of this event couldn’t have been more perfect, as Ken Burns’ 18 hour documentary The Vietnam War premieres Sunday, Sept. 17. You won’t want to miss a single minute of this extremely contemplative show.

If you have children that are Wild Kratts fans, be sure to get your tickets to their live performance in Spokane. The show is Sunday, Sept. 24 at the INB Performing Arts Center.

Lest you think summer was all play and no work, I want to reassure you that the Board and staff have been working very hard to create a fiscally sound and balanced budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. The Governance Committee identified a new slate of officers: Chair – Ann Hurst, Providence Health Care; Vice Chair – Nancy Ledeboer, Community Volunteer; Secretary – Linda Finney, Community Volunteer; and Treasurer – Don Anderson, Washington Trust Bank.

Please join me in congratulating Ann, Nancy, Linda and Don!The KSPS 50th Anniversary year continues and we look

forward to receiving your “Happy 50th” greeting to the station. Please send it to [email protected] as soon as possible.

As I mentioned earlier, with the diminishing hours of daylight we seem to be spending more time indoors, which means more TV time. Check out the schedule for new shows and new seasons of all of your favorite shows. You won’t be disappointed.

While this is my last message as Chair, I’m not going far away: I will continue to serve on the board for one more year; and I will continue to volunteer. I invite you to do the same.

All the Best,

Pati DahmenChair, Friends of KSPS Board of Directors

Leaving a Legacy…Ms. Doreen Hopton of Calgary AB, was

passionate about the education, preservation and the rights of First Nations people. She also was a long-time member of KSPS who never missed a year renewing her donation.

Mr. Darryl Troutman chose to remember KSPS in his will as a first-time donor. We are so grateful to each of them for counting KSPS as family and helping to protect and provide the programming they loved for generations to come.

For more information on how you can plan a gift, call Sandra Kernerman, CFRE — 509-443-7717, or contact your financial planner.

Election 2017 Specials on KSPSFall is here; and even though it is an “off year” for elections, politics…well…never takes time

off, really. That’s why it is important for us at KSPS to keep you on top of things and informed, no matter the year or time of year. KSPS will bring you two election debates in October, on issues and/or candidates yet to be determined — but you can be sure that their local/regional scope will be timely and informative: Monday, Oct. 16, 8 pm

Looking Back — And Looking AheadAs you read this, we’ll have just finished another fiscal year or just started a new one. Looking back,

most of this past fiscal year was about:Celebration — Our 50th Anniversary as a station (with a visit from PBS President Paula Kerger) and another Emmy nomination (this time for our Documentary Carl Maxey-A Fighting Life);Community Outreach — from MediaFest, where high school students learned about job opportunities in broadcast, print and online media, to FitKids Fest where nearly a thousand kids of all ages spent the day running, jumping and playing; andCommemoration — honoring those Vietnam War veterans who sacrificed so much for our freedom with The Wall That Heals and helping survivors of the WWII Japanese Internment Camps tell their stories.

None of this would be possible without a great team here at KSPS and the support of Friends Like You!

So…What’s Next?

First things first — we’re adding a new channel to our lineup! PBSKids 24/7 is exactly that — a channel devoted to the PBSKids Programming all day, all night, every day. PBS Kids 24/7 will debut on September 4 and be available over-the air as well as on Comcast Cable. We’re hoping to expand the service into Canada in the near future.

The big PBS event in September will be Ken Burns’ The Vietnam War: a two-week look at the war and the people who fought it, survived it and sacrificed for it. We’ll also be airing a special program that will focus on the challenges faced by those veterans after they came home.

In November, our documentary Hidden in Plain Sight: Fighting Homelessness in Spokane will look at the problem, the efforts and what it will take to address it. The documentary will be followed by a live town hall meeting to talk to those affected and those who can effect change.

And yes…Fall brings back…Poldark(!), The Durrell’s in Corfu and Anne of Green Gables will also return; and Astronaut Captain Scott Kelly continues with Beyond a Year in Space, about how his life has changed now that he’s back from his epic journey.

And there may a few other surprises on the way, so stay tuned.

But, as we wind down our 50th year, we’re reminded that there are always challenges ahead, including the uncertainty of our continued federal funding support. As always, your help on this is greatly appreciated — you can find out how at Protect My Public Media (protectmypublicmedia.org).

Finally, I’d like to say a special thank you to our outgoing Friends of KSPS Board Chair, Pati Dahmen. During her many years leading the Board, she has been a true Friend of KSPS — serving on every committee, leading our Strategic Planning effort,

recruiting new Board members and volunteering for every event…every year. Pati, from the KSPS Team, The Board and Friends of KSPS in U.S. and Canada, we thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do to help set us up for the next 50 years.

Sincerely,

There were so many encouraging results and revelations that highlighted our recent August Membership Campaign. One was that digital communication tools are starting to come into their own. Another is that KSPS Sustainers are on the rise. In the August campaign alone, 27% of donations took the form of long-term Sustainers. In fact, Sustainier donations now account for about $1 million of the KSPS income stream!

We hope by now that talk of being a KSPS Sustainer in Prevue amounts to "preaching to the choir;" but in case you just joined — or have somehow missed the message — a KSPS Sustainer is a member who commits to monthly, ongoing and automatic giving from a bank account or credit card. Not only that, the amount you give keeps on giving year-to-year — until you want to make a change.

For you, it cuts down on the time and the paper…the monthly writing of checks, addressing envelopes and attaching postage. For KSPS, it gives a stable source of income for the station — an income we can count on to be there month after month, year after year and build upon as we draw new members into the KSPS family of supporters.

If this sounds like a concept you can get behind; if you'd like to give in a way that will have even more lasting effect for YOUR station, please consider becoming a KSPS Sustainer today. To find out more: ksps.org/support-ksps; email [email protected] or call to talk with someone from our friendly and helpful membership team at 800-735-2377.

If you are already a Sustainer, Thank You! If you give by credit card, consider switching to automatic withdrawls from your checking account. It will save KSPS from paying the credit card fees. Regardless of your donation method, please know that we appreciate you!
