The AODA Act in Ontario

Making Ontario accessible

June 13, 2005, Ontario government passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005

The ActThe Act:

Makes Ontario the first jurisdiction in Canada to develop, implement & enforce mandatory accessibility standards; applies to both private & public sectors

•1.85 million people in Ontario have a disability or 1 in 7•Over the next 20 years as the population ages, the number will rise to one in five Ontarians.•Ontario needs to be more accessible to people with disabilities. It makes sense — economically and socially

Through the act and the accessibility standards, the goal is to make Ontario accessible by 2025

Meeting the requirements of the standards: Customer Service

As a first step, businesses in Ontario with at least one employee must offer accessible customer service by January 1, 2012 The customer service standard is about:

•Understanding that customers with disabilities may have different needs, and•Finding the best way to help them access your goods and services

The restaurant industry in Ontario for example•Restaurants, pubs and hotels which are accessible and provide excellent customer service to disabled people, their friends and family, will reach an estimated $1 billion market •18% of disabled customers visit restaurants at least once a week and 22% visit at least two or three times a month•60.7% of disabled customers go to restaurants to meet family and friends

Estimates project that 20% of the population will have a disability in the next several years. Logically, with the demographic trend towards a much larger senior population of Baby-Boomers, the impact of disability will be more pronounced. If you use a multiplier of just one person per disabled customer, that means that 40% of the population will be directly affected. These are your potential customers & clients with money to spend on your businesses services and products
