REDLINE SRThe best selling Redline SR features an attractive ‘crescent’ grip that is almost flat. The improved banana shaped trajectory makes the SR more wind stable than ever before while for the on shot minimum weight will provide exceptional hold to the target. Suitable for fast and artificial surfaces.

BLUELINEWider than an SR – tighter than the oldVectorVS the Blueline is designed specifically for Australian and New Zealand greens. The Blueline is suited to both artificial and grass greens found in these countries. The Taylor Blueline is specifically designed for bowlers that prefer a bowl that has a slightly wider line than the SR.The latest profiling technology employed at the Taylor factory has allowed us to design a bowl that is tighter than the oldVectorVS but wider than the Redline SR.The trajectory of the SR and Blueline are almost identical, even, no hook, wind friendly and accurate in the extreme.

The Bowls SA 2010/11 Awards Night is less than four weeks away and I encourage all Members to consider attending. Not only will the achievements of bowlers from the

2010/11 season be recognised, but this year’s event will be extra special with the inaugural induction of the Bowls SA Hall of Fame. In an exciting initiative, Bowls SA will recognise those athletes and members that have made outstanding and significant contributions to the sport of bowls in South Australia for the first time. The Hall of Fame Committee has been busy working through the difficult task of deciding who will be the inaugural inductees and it promises to be a wonderful celebration of bowls in this state. Tickets are available through Bowls SA and more details on the event appear on Page 6. The Bowls SA Development department have organised two upcoming courses that will be of interest to members. The first one is a First Aid Course in May that will be run by Surf Life Saving SA on behalf of Bowls SA. Knowledge of basic first aid skills could make the difference between life and death in certain circumstances and should be updated regularly, so even if you have done a course in the past it might be time to refresh your skills. More information on the course is on Page 33.A Coaching Re-accreditation course has also been organised for June at the Hawthorn Bowling Club. The course provides an opportunity for coaches to update their coaching knowledge and accreditation status and an advert outlining the details of the course can be found on Page 33.

Nominations have closed for Bowls SA Committees with the successful candidates assuming their positions on 1 July. The support and expertise provided by committee members is vital in maintaining the services and programs that the organisation implement and on behalf of the Board I thank those that have contributed over the last 12 months, and look forward to working with the new committees.Keeping the governance of the sport progressive, efficient and productive at all levels requires a huge voluntary commitment but one that can be immensely rewarding. With that in mind I encourage all members to consider what skills and expertise they have and what they can give back to their sport at Club, Association, Region or State level. The Champion of Champion events will be run in May and with increases in participants across the Singles and Pairs events, the contest for these prestigious titles will be fierce. An added incentive for the winners will be the opportunity to compete in the Bowls Australia National Champion of Champion events to be held in Western Australia in October in which SA was well represented last year with Riina Bradbrook taking out the Singles title and Garry and Josh Thompson finishing second in the Pairs.

PRESiDENT’S message[ [

• The increase in Australian Sports Commission participation and high performance funding which will see the sport of bowls benefit from an extra $650,000. The STAs and Bowls Australia are currently working through different alternatives to utilise the funding so Member Clubs and Members will directly benefit from it.

• With the ongoing installation of synthetic greens across Australia, reports that some companies have not been providing satisfactory service to clubs is a major concern. Bowls Australia is finalising the production of a synthetic greens minimum standards document that will be a resource for clubs looking at the installation of synthetic greens. A flow on from this will be the possibility of licensing suppliers to safeguard clubs in the future.

• Donations to the Bowls Australia Disaster Fund have now reached $50,000. Clubs that have been affected by a natural disaster such as the recent floods, may make application to Bowls Australia for financial support.

While the 2010-11 season is over for most of us, the 2011-12 season is set to be a busy one with the Australian Masters Games during October and the Asia Pacific Games at the Holdfast Bay and Lockleys Clubs from 28 November to 11 December. These events are a great boost for our State, and I hope many of you can join me in providing support to our players.

Enjoy the off-season.

Ivy Kluske - President

At the Bowls SA Council Meeting on Thursday 28 April voting will take place to elect the Board for the term commencing at the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting on 5 September.I can look back over the last two years with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. The role of President is diverse with a strong emphasis on governance and putting in place strategies that ensure the long term future of the sport, while on the other hand meeting and joining with members in a relaxed social atmosphere. I have enjoyed both aspects immensely and am committed to continuing in this role if re-elected. The General Manager and I recently attended the Bowls Australia Council meeting at Nelson Bay, NSW which was held in conjunction with the Australian Sides Championship. A number of topics, programs and initiatives were discussed by the STA and Bowls Australia delegates including:

• The first Bowls Australia National Census that was undertaken last year has been completed and compiled. This census document makes interesting reading and will be distributed to all Member Clubs later this year and I encourage members to have a look at the document.

• While the Sporting Pulse suite of programs has become a well used resource for many Associations and bowlers, Bowls Australia is keen to see the system provide even more scope and will be working closely with the STAs and Sporting Pulse on expanding these resources.

kLOSE TO PERFECT AT NELSON BAY Both the Men’s and Women’s

State Teams went into April’s Australian Sides Championships at Nelson Bay (NSW) with some confidence.

At the previous event at Holdfast Bay both had performed well. The Women had grabbed second spot, beating NSW and Queensland for the first time at that level and the Men had finished a close fourth. To put the icing on the cake Penny Landherr picked up seven wins from seven games taking out the coveted “Top Skip” position.Men’sThe Men’s team selected for Nelson Bay was unrecognisable to that which took to the greens at Holdfast. The retirement of Dave Stockham and the unavailability of Jeff Aworth saw the side enter the competition with three new Skips. We should add that Ashley Klose was to put in his final appearance in South Australian colours before his shift to NSW and he was selected as three to 21 year old Max Kleinig who would take on the responsibility of Skipping the third rink. After an excellent performance against Victoria earlier in the year, Marc Evans retained his spot at two to Scott Thulborn and Grange’s Carl Schapel debuted in the same position for Wayne Ruediger. The team under the guidance of Manager Trevor Lloyd and Coach Dave Stockham finished in fourth spot as they did at Holdfast, but there are some real positives to come out of what was an excellent overall

performance and Stockham was full of praise for his playing group.“It was an excellent performance” he commented. “We needed one more win to get second spot and there is more to it than meets the eye. Statistics show us that SA finished second in rinks won and second in shots up and these stats are a credit to the playing group.” In season 2008/09 Kleinig Skipped for Somerton in the Metropolitan Premier One competition and ended the minor rounds with one loss and rated as top Skip for the year. In 2009/10 he returned to home town Laura and Skipped alongside his father in a team that took out the local Pennant for the first time in 90 years. On his return to Adelaide he chose to join Marion and was an integral part of the Club’s Grand Final side. At the Sides Championship he Skippered his rink of Klose, Kane Coulls and Simon Dorr to five wins from seven games and won the first four on the trot. He would go on to finish third on the Skipper’s table and take out the Super Six Pairs title with Ruediger. As a 21 year

old it was an eye catching performance that will surely put his name firmly

before the Australian Under-25 selectors.South Australia opened the tournament with a narrow and in many ways unlucky four shot loss to old foe Victoria. With the rinks of Kleinig and Ruediger gaining hard fought victories, Victoria did enough in the third rink to secure a 57-53 win. It was not the ideal start for our team but it would prove to be the only rink loss on a competitive day of bowling. Despite the first round defeat the playing group recovered quickly to

record a comprehensive 92-32 win over Tasmania in the afternoon game.

In a dominant performance Ruediger and his rink of Mark Haines, Carl Schapel and Daryl Steinwedel secured a 45-8

win while Thulborn with Andy Hill, Evans and Col Saltmarsh recovered from the morning’s loss to record a 28-9 victory over Mark Strotchnetter. Kleinig and his four put the icing on the cake with a 19-15 win.

On the Sunday morning South Australia lost a tight game against Western Australia 64-59 but picked up two rinks along the way. Wins to Kleinig and Thulborn all but pulled the side through and in a repeat of the first day’s recovery the team went on to record a solid 59-47 result against the ACT dropping only half a rink. With threatening rain and on holding greens the players faced a daunting task on the Monday. A first up game against a powerful Queensland combination would be followed by a key encounter with an equally imposing NSW in the afternoon. South Australia lost both games and failed to win a rink on the day but Thulborn and his four took Brett Wilkie to the line in an 18-16 loss against Queensland and again were highly competitive in a 19-17 loss to a talented NSW outfit in the afternoon. In the final game South Australia finished the Sides Championship with an emphatic 72-35 defeat of the Northern Territory to gain fourth spot overall.Super SixesOur Super Six side consisted of Ashley Klose in the Singles, Kleinig and Ruediger in the Pairs and Thulborn, Andrew Hill and Col Saltmarsh in the Triples. It would prove to be a lethal combination with Klose defeating Aaron Sherriff in the Singles Final and Kleinig and Ruediger recording a brilliant win in the Pairs. Thulborn, Hill and Saltmarsh missed the play off by the barest of margins, eventually finishing in fourth spot. The success of our six a side team is a great indication of the core of experienced and competitive bowlers within State ranks with many still young and with their best bowls ahead of them. women’s As with the Men, the Women’s State side included changes with Berri’s Kerry

Treloar taking on a Skipper’s berth, Lockley’s Di Green slipping in at three for Kelli Wray, Modbury’s Cherie Morgan selected in a similar role for Treloar and Holdfast Bay’s Wendy Clarke at two to Penny Landherr. The job of Managing State teams either away or at home has many facets and during the opening ceremony Di Green became ill and would ultimately be unavailable for the first three games. SA Manager Denise Amos, who was already dressed in our colours, stepped into the breach and was immediately given the title of “Super Sub.” It was a rare occurrence and after recovering Green would reappear in game four and go on to bowl well during the remainder of the competition. In her absence the experienced Riina Bradbrook moved to three for Kelli Wray and would hold that position for the remainder of the tournament. In game one South Australia went down 65-54 to Victoria before bouncing back in the afternoon to record a 65-51 win over Tasmania. Wray and her rink obviously settled well as they followed up a 29-18 win in the morning with an equally impressive 26-16 score-line in the afternoon. After a first up loss, Treloar with Morgan, Clarke and 15 year old Breeanna Dickson on board posted an excellent 21-9 win. In Sunday morning’s game Western Australia would again prove to be a tough opponent and after battling hard for much of the game the Sandgropers came out on top to the tune of 62-56. In a close encounter the rinks of Penny Landherr and Wray both drew while Treloar and her four went down to noted WA skip Therese Hastings by six shots. To this point Wray had posted two wins and a draw from three games and in the afternoon session

continued on with a further win against the ACT as SA took control winning on all three rinks.Monday morning ushered in what was always going to be a hard day against a crack Queensland outfit followed by a match against a star studded NSW combination. The day began badly with Queensland proving too strong in a 73-41 overall win. It was the first time at Nelson Bay that the SA women had failed to win a rink although Wray and her four went desperately close in an 18-17 loss to Maria Rigby. To recover from such a loss would prove to be a difficult task and few would have predicted the result of the afternoon game. Against a NSW combination which boasted nine Australian representatives South Australia excelled on all rinks and walked off the green with a 57-51 victory. The results will show that once again Wray’s rink were to the fore with a 25-15 defeat of Beth Quinlan, but the match ups of

Treloar versus Katrina Wright and Landherr versus Karen Murphy were equally important as both fours went down by a mere two shots. It was a classic example of how to play as a team and such an attitude bodes well for the future. For the second successive year our women have defeated NSW in the Sides Championship and this in itself is an indication of the growing confidence within the playing group. On the final day South Australia produced a dynamic performance out pointing the Northern Territory to the tune of 91-45 with all three rinks finishing on strongly. The combination of Wray, Bradbrook, Green, Prosso and “Super Sub” Amos were never out classed and with five wins, a loss and a draw took fifth spot in the top rink table. Above them were the names of Rigby, Wright, Hastings and Lyndsay Armitage and we can ask no more.Super SixesIt had been a long week and South Australia’s Women’s “Super Six” side was set to come up against strong combinations from all States and Territories. Once again Bradbrook was to perform well in the Singles finishing in a creditable fourth position whilst the Pairs combination of Landherr and Dickson and the Triples side of Treloar, Wray and Katrina Miller both finished in sixth position.Bowls SA High Performance Manager Harvey Jolly, who comes from a cricketing background with SACA and was attending his first Sides Championship, was on the sidelines during the week and made the following observation. “Bowls is truly an amateur sport” he commented at the completion of the event. “The players who make themselves available for such events do so because they want to be there. In professional sport it is easier to set out training schedules and expect a 100 percent attendance. Most of the bowlers are working men and women and give what time they can and sacrifice a great deal to represent their state.” These athletes once again did SA proud, on and

off the green.

Marion’s Matthew Northcott has defeated team mate Adam Forbes to take out the Bowls

SA Under 35 Singles Championship title at Kensington/Marryatville for 2010/11. Following a delay of almost a month due to excessive heat and a full calendar, Quarter-final action eventually got under way with Nathan Pedersen (Rosewater) defeating Bradley Pech of Tanunda 8-4, 12-6. A tie-breaker was necessary for Matthew Northcott (Marion) to defeat Mark Haines (West Lakes) 11-9, 7-13, 5-1. Adam Forbes recorded a win when Ashley Klose forfeited due to NSW Premier League commitments and Brandon Whiley of McLaren Vale eventually won in a very close match against Zane Cini (Semaphore) 8-8, 8-8, 6-0.U18 team mates Nathan Pedersen and Matt Northcott battled in the Semi-finals with Pedersen taking the first set 9-6, then Northcott

fought back to win the second set 8-7, before dominating the tie-break 5-0 to secure a place in the Final. Adam Forbes looked set to be the other Finals contender after he took the first set from Brandon Whiley 11-5, but then a loss in the second set 4-7 necessitated a tie break which Forbes was able to claim 5-1, realising Whiley’s first tie-break loss after four straight successes in the event. With Marion dominating the event for another year Northcott bolted to an early 7-2 lead in the first set before Forbes reeled off five straight shots to claim a 7-all draw. The second set was a similar story with Northcott leading 5-1 early before Forbes got back to 5-6 with two ends to play. However a three on the 9th put Northcott

in the box seat and a final three on the last handed Northcott a 12-5 set victory and the Under 35’s trophy for 2010/11.

Disability bowlers represented South Australia with great pride and commitment at

this year’s Australian Open. After playing sectional games, blind bowler Neil Cundy only just missed out on playing for Gold when he won the first set of his final game but was unlucky to go down in the second set. Neil displayed some outstanding draw bowling throughout the tournament and is a credit to his State. Kath Murrell, representing the women’s blind bowlers, delivered some outstanding bowls and showed great spirit on the green, while wheelchair champion David Bailey had to retire due to injury after the first day of the competition.Rosemary Lane narrowly missed out on winning her section after a victory over Queenslander Crystal Martin.

However, Michael Lawrie showed great form throughout the tournament, only dropping one game in a tie break. Playing off for a Gold medal against Victorian bowler Ross Brown, it came down to the tie break to decide the winner and on the last end he drew shot to force it to an extra end. Holding three seconds with his last bowl he missed sitting shot bowl by only centimetres, to come away with a Silver medal. Thank you to the supporters that helped during the event including coach Stephanie Simms who coached and encouraged the participants and also directors Ron Fawkes and Beryl Woodall of the Blind Bowlers Association.

Another day of stunning weather greeted 18 teams from around South Australia to the Walkerville Bowling Club for the State Night

Owls Final on Sunday 2 April.Teams from Ardrossan, Tanunda, Mintaro, Mallala, Murray Bridge, Willunga and Morphett Vale represented the country regions while West Lakes, Modbury, Semaphore and Ascot Park were the

metropolitan contenders. After two of the three matches, played over six ends each, only three teams had won both games, showing the evenness of the competition. The final game saw By Us 4 (West Lakes) lose to Morphett Vale Red 4-5 and Bowlerama (Murray Bridge) have a 5-5 draw with Tanunda Crownies. That left The Havens from West Lakes as the only three game winners after they came back from eight shots down to defeat In the Pink (Ardrossan) 10-8 to claim the State Night Owls event.

Located in the Brisbane Valley, Esk has a population of around 2,000 including outlying areas, and the Bowling Club has 55 full and junior members. In a

diary the Club Secretary recorded events over the days leading to the devastation caused by the Queensland floods. The green was rapidly filling with water and creeks in surrounding areas had broken their banks and merged to become an inland raging sea that cut the Brisbane Valley Highway. The road south of Coominya to Fernvale closed due to flooding from the Wivenhoe Dam and Brisbane River and members who were planning on going to Toowoomba and on to their homes, were stopped when the Toowoomba emergency happened and the wall of water flowed down the range through Murphy’s Creek, Withcott, Helidon, Grantham and Gatton causing enormous destruction and loss of life.Torrential and unrelenting rain continued and unable to get home, some members took refuge at the clubhouse. The already stressful situation intensified when a four foot wall of water hit the Club with force.

Meanwhile, the water and smelly and slippery mud had inundated the main street of Esk and caused irreparable damage to homes and businesses over a huge area surrounding the Brisbane River. Over the following days, with the water receding a team of willing volunteers set to work to pump the water off the green, pull up the sodden carpet, wash the floorboards with bore water, and remove garden waste from around the plants which had previously been located near the fence which no longer existed.Ironically a broken pipe was found and the water metre had been ticking over since the first event on Monday. Jaimee McDougall, a 14 year old student at Xavier College and junior member of the Wasleys Bowling Club, was like all of us, horrified at the devastation wreaked on communities by the January floods. While watching the news coverage Jaimee saw senior members of a bowling club trying desperately to save photos and pumping water from their green, and at this point she decided to conduct a raffle to raise money for victims. With generous donations from local businesses and individuals she

obtained prizes for her raffle. Via the internet she found Esk Bowling Club, a small club 100km Northwest of Brisbane, one of three bowling clubs seriously damaged by the January floods. Brad McDougall, Wasleys Club President and Jaimee’s father, contacted the Esk Bowling Club on Jaimee’s behalf and asked if they would be willing to accept Jaimee’s donation. Club President, Laurie Thomson and club members, touched by Jaimee’s compassion and ingenuity, gratefully accepted her offer. With total support of the Wasleys members, a donation bottle was placed on the bar and money from weekly spinning wheels was added to the proceeds from the raffle.A total of $1,002.35 was raised and forwarded to the Esk Club which it is hoped will not only financially assist the club but highlight the unity of the bowls fraternity.Congratulations Jaimee.

BLUESkY HEALTHCARE: HELPiNG YOU AND BOWLS SA!

When I was asked if I could research and write an article on Encounter Bay Bowling Club I thought how timely the request

was. The Club, one of four which sit along the coastline at the base of the Fleurieu Peninsula, had recently installed synthetic greens and two weeks prior to our conversation a soft covered booklet had been handed to me as I sat beside the clubhouse at McLaren Vale. It was from an old mate of mine, John Althorp and was entitled “Encounter Bay Bowling Club, the First Fifty Years -1959-2009”. It seems that this article was meant to be written. On the first page of the booklet is an acknowledgement from Althorp which reads in part as follows:In 1989 Arnold Brown, who had been secretary of the Encounter Bay Bowling Club from 1972-80 wrote a history of the first thirty years of the club’s existence. A typewritten copy of this was placed in the clubhouse, with the idea that at sometime it would be published. Twenty years later, Arnold’s history has become the first part of this book’s acknowledgement of the foresight and hard work of those members who have made this club what it is today. In March of 1959 after securing council approval for the development of bowling greens adjacent to the Encounter Bay

Oval one Mr A L Sedunary, a member of the Victor Harbor Bowling Club organised a public meeting for those interested in such a proposal. A small advertisement in the local newspaper read as follows: Bowling Greens at Encounter Bay. A meeting of bowlers and persons interested in the game of Bowls will be held in the Newlandtown Memorial Hall on Thurs., 19th March at 7.30 pm. Business to consider forming a bowling club at Encounter Bay, and to elect a committee to select a suitable site for bowling greens. All interested persons are invited to attend. A. L. Sedunary, Convenor.Present at the meeting were a large number of Victor Harbor Bowling Club members including Len Read who, like Lyall Sedunary, had been a stalwart and committee man at the Victor Harbor Bowling Club for many years and it was he who presided over that first meeting. It was a time when women were first offered the opportunity of joining bowling clubs as full members throughout the State and this along with a chance to play night bowls saw 28 Victor Harbor members join the newly formed club for its first season. At Victor Harbor heavy dew at the coastal club prevented night play and the women bowlers were still part of a separate club. These two issues and the interest of local people saw Encounter Bay members on the

greens in 1960. It should be stated here that both Read and Sedunary continued to bowl at Victor Harbor and both would become Life Members of their home club but their important roles in the formation of Encounter Bay Bowling Club is indisputable. In 1960-61 the subscriptions were 5 guineas for men and 4 guineas for the ladies who were full members and therefore had full rights at all meetings. From 1959-60 the Club has had 27 Presidents and for the first ten years there were 10 individual Men’s Singles Champions. For the women J Puckridge won three of the first 10 and E McDonald two. It is from the Honour Boards that we can capture the history of bowling clubs and the gold print keeps alive memories of those early days. From these beginnings Encounter Bay Bowling Club prospered and by 2009 more than 230 members were enjoying the facilities. There is little doubt that the decision to form a new club 50 years previous had been vindicated. For the record the club went into the first year (1960) under the guidance of President, Morrie Wilkinson, Vice President, Fred Nunn, Secretary, Hedley Vawser, Treasurer, Lyall Sedunary along with a committee of 11.In August 2008, President Peter Newton and his Board created a new position within the club, namely EBBC

16 SA Bowler April/May 2011

Development Co-ordinator with strict terms of reference. This was drafted with the assistance of Board member Jack Wells and included the formation of the EBBC Future Directions Development Committee. In June 2009 a well attended “Think Tank” was held with City of Victor Harbor Economic Development Officer Roy Ramage facilitating and members were encouraged to think big and outside the square. This meeting was soon to be followed by a Feasibility Study into future options for providing the club with all weather greens which would offer the facilities for winter bowls. In early 2010, under then President Rod Jarvis a Special General Meeting of members was called and at this meeting it was decided by a majority of members to install two synthetic greens at the club. At the Development Committee’s instigation and with Board approval an independent consultant, Janice Blair was employed to assist with the study and again in early 2010 the Club’s new Business Plan evolved. This plan was at the centre of the Club’s application to the City of Victor Harbor to guarantee a loan for the conversion of two grass greens to synthetic and with the assistance of many members the new synthetic greens were put down during the winter of 2010. The project would include a specialised drainage disposal

pump and a completely new lighting system. The reasons for going synthetic were many and varied and included a wish to offer year round bowling on a good surface, to gain substantial savings on green keeping costs and to lift revenue over winter months. The facilities would also offer ideal conditions for “Night Owls” and for non-members who wished to continue bowling in the off-season when their home greens are unavailable. The benefits of a change to synthetic greens at Encounter Bay and the resultant increase in participation over the winter months make interesting reading. The membership of the club has grown by 30 over the first 12 months and an increase in revenue of $23,000 over that period has exceeded expectations. Along with these benefits is the involvement of The Investigator School with 25 young students between the ages of 12-14 playing Friday afternoon Triples in the first and third terms of the school year. A letter from Junior Co-ordinator, Yvette Wells tells of a further advancement in the junior ranks. At a meeting on Friday 28 January of this year the colours for and the name of the ninth “Henselite Junior Development Squad” were decided and the note proclaims that the “Fleurieu Falcons” are to take flight. The Falcons which will draw players from the Fleurieu Peninsula

and Kangaroo Island will be competing at Bowls SA Junior Development days and will attend training sessions at various clubs in the Region. With Bowls SA Development Officer Kelli Wray also involved you can bet that those “Falcons” will be up and flying in their new green and gold colours and the new facilities at Encounter Bay Bowling Club will offer the perfect home base.If decision making, hard work and endeavour have anything to do with it the members at this club have a rosy future ahead of them. At a time when bowling clubs are competing with a wide range of leisure pursuits for that elusive disposable income, up to date facilities are important as is the year round participation of members and visitors. The lift in revenue over the last 12 months indicates a change in emphasis and a willingness to meet the future head on. One wonders what Matthew Flinders would have thought of such a project had it been there when he met with Nicholas Baudin in 1802 off the coast of what in the future was to be known as Encounter Bay. He was a man whose vision and endeavour led to the mapping of much of the coastline of Australia and I’m sure he would have applauded the efforts of the Board and members of Encounter Bay Bowling Club over the last 52 years.

As the 2010 Pennant season winds down throughout South Australia there are wonderful stories coming in from all points

of the State. We have said many times that our great sport keeps throwing up unique scenarios and although we haven’t the space here to recount them all the following is a sprinkling of situations that have arisen in Grand Final action. Jervois Bowling Club, in the Lower Murray Association, celebrates its 50th year in 2011 and the Women’s Division 1 side took out the Pennant for the first time in its history. Among the players was that hard working Bowls SA President Ivy Kluske and you can bet that the clubhouse would have been rocking that night.Happy Valley has a shorter history than Jervois but the Division 1 ladies would have been equally exuberant after a one shot win over McLaren Vale. Once again it is the team’s first win since the Club was formed and with the Southern Association ceasing to exist this year the shield will remain in the clubhouse for posterity. Men’s Grand Finals from Kangaroo Island to the Riverland were forced to an extra end after a draw at the completion of the match while the Division 1 Women’s side from Cowell celebrated

its third win on the trot. This feat was emulated by the men from Mt Gambier Red and Kadina while Minlaton’s Division 1 side grabbed its first title in 10 years. A great story comes out of the rural district of Jamestown with the Men’s top side taking out its first Pennant since 1956, the year of the deluge which put large tracts of SA under water. On the opposite end of the scale Hamley Bridge has won its seventh Pennant from seven starts. In the metropolitan area the weather for the Thursday Premier One Grand Final between Prospect-Broadview and Modbury at Holdfast Bowling Club offered little comfort to the 24 bowlers who had earned the right to compete. During the hard fought encounter Prospect-Broadview handled the passing heavy showers and fluky winds well and proved too tough on the day, securing a 73-49 win over its cross town rival. Modbury had reached the Grand Final for the fifth consecutive year picking up two titles along the way while Prospect-Broadview was looking for its first win as a combined side. Both Clubs had produced excellent seasons with Modbury securing six Pennants on Wednesday and Saturday and Prospect-Broadview after an influx of nine experienced male bowlers during

the off-season had picked up three. And so there was much to play for. This season’s Saturday Premier One Grand Final between Grange and Marion promised to be a classy encounter and the game lived up to all expectations. On the green at West Lakes were nine current State or former State representatives. Marion had beaten Grange in the first Semi-Final to progress through to the Final while the Dolphins having taken care of Lockleys the previous Sunday had earned the right to contest their second Grand Final in two years. After the allotted 84 ends Grange won the game 78-71 having led for the entire day but in difficult windy conditions the Hurricanes fought every inch of the way. Ultimately three or four great shots during the day got Grange over the line, but Marion with such a young side should learn from the experience. When three rinks lose by a shot it has been a great game of bowls and Grange are congratulated on their win.Doubtless there will be many more stories told of tight wins and devastating losses over the winter months as players reflect on 2010/11 and psyche themselves up for another battle next season. Congratulations to all winners.

South Australia’s Renee McPharlin has joined Australia’s next generation of stars debuting in the green and gold

at the Under 18 Trans Tasman series against New Zealand at Lockleys, alongside Western Australia’s Kristina Krstic, Queensland’s Scott De Jongh and Victoria’s Dylan Fisher. Australia relinquished the Junior Trans Tasman Trophy for the first time in Auckland last year and while early showers greeted both nations, the weather was not about to dampen the fierce rivalry. With the 2012 World Championships, the sport’s showpiece event, also to be staged at Lockleys in 18 months time, players possessing higher ambitions were out to show National Coach Steve Glasson that they can perform in the international arena and be worthy Australian representatives. It was a perfect start for Australia with a 16-12 win in the boys’ pairs, while Kristina and Renee made a fairytale start to their careers with a 35-3 demolition of New Zealand’s Lanah Craik and Brittany Tyson. In the girl’s Singles Renee managed a convincing win against Tyson 21-16 as did her Pairs partner Kristina when she recorded a solid 21-2 win over Craik. On day two, in front of a 50 strong Balaklava cheer squad, Renee and Kristina again showed their talents registering a 19-13 triumph against the Kiwi duo. During the afternoon Singles, Kristina prevailed 21-15 against Lanah and Renee defeated Brittany 21-19, to take Australia to a 5-1 lead, asserting its dominance of the under 18 series with a test to spare. On Monday morning, keeping their unblemished records intact, Kristina accounted for Brittany Tyson 21-11, while Renee registered a 21-12 victory against Lanah Craik in the Singles

and then finished off the series by outgunning Lanah and Brittany 21-13 in the Pairs. Likewise, the U18 boys fared well through the whole series against their NZ rivals, Monte Pawa and Ryan Khan, winning all three Pairs. In the Singles Dylan recorded another three wins while Scott was not so lucky. Overall, the Australians dominated and claimed the Under 18 Trans Tasman series 3-0.However, Australia’s under 25 bid to make it a clean sweep received a hit when New Zealand countered during the morning session of the third and final Test of the Women’s and Men’s series when the Kiwis went into the lunchtime break with the upper hand. As a result, the series was down to the wire, and Australia’s long standing dominance over New Zealand at U25 level was erased when the Kiwis secured both the Men’s and Women’s U25 Trans Tasman trophies. Adding injury to insult, the series loss in the Men’s competition is the first time Australia has seen the prized silverware head across the ditch and from a home soil loss no less. To New Zealand’s credit they handled the conditions, particularly the wind, a little better than Australia did, but there was very little in either series as a 2-1 score lines attest. In summing up the series, Australian Coach Steve Glasson said “Overall I’m very proud of the way they fought, it’s a great learning curve for all of our players, and these series are all about development, so I’m sure they will benefit immensely from it.”

With all the Bowls Grand Finals around South Australia won and lost over the last couple of weeks there will

be many great stories to come out of season 2010/11, but you would go a long way to better one that comes out of the Happy Valley Bowling Club. Nestled alongside tennis courts and a BMX track in Aberfoyle Park the club was formed in 1984. It is a young club when compared to others but this season the First Division Women’s side and members within it have carved out their own special piece of history. For 27 years the ladies have competed in the Southern Association pennant competition without picking up a first division flag but this year all that changed with a 46-45 win over McLaren Vale Green. As the scores indicate the game was hard fought and the result came down to a measure on the final end, but there is much more significance to the story of a one shot win. One centimetre was the difference between heartbreak and ecstasy. After this season the Southern Women’s Association will no longer exist with teams joining either the Metropolitan or

Great Southern regions and so Happy Valley has taken out the final Pennant to be played. In the past the winning side has earned the right to display the Pennant Shield in its clubrooms for the ensuing 12 months and in this case the trophy will remain on display for posterity. This is great news for the Club but the story doesn’t end there.During the season seven members of the Division 1 team completed the remarkable feat of winning all four Southern Women’s Association shields for the nominated events. The Senior Fours was won by Avis Steer, Sandy Barnes, Gillian Lee and Judith Pike and Val Puckridge joined Steer, Barnes and Pike to take out the Fours. Barnes and Pike won the Pairs for the second year whilst Robyn Mazey, Rosemary Gage and Pike topped the season off with a win in the Triples. Once again all trophies won will remain with the Club and when we spoke to President Puckridge she was delighted with the Club’s achievements over the year.“We (Division 1) had a slow start to the season” she commented. “Selection changes were the catalyst for what was

a great recovery as the season went on and we wound up in second position at the end of the Minor rounds. In our first Final we beat Minor Premiers McLaren Vale Green by 10 shots to go straight through and then met the same side in the Grand Final. It was so exciting to win 46-45 and it came down to a measure on the last end.”Happy Valley Men’s Pennant sides already compete in metropolitan competitions and have done for many years and the women, with younger bowlers coming through the ranks look forward to a new phase of their bowling lives.

HAPPY VALLEY - A STORY WORTH TELLiNG

A South Australian group of 16 “Firies” and CFS personnel took part in the Australasian Fire Services Bowls Carnival

against approximately 200 bowlers from all States and New Zealand at Echuca, Rochester and Lockington Clubs in early April. The best performed were an SA Four, a family of two brothers, and two in-laws - Greg Edmonds, Trevor Hunter, Wayne Duncan and John Edmonds. The bowl that all Skippers dream

of came true for Langhorne Creek member John Edmonds on the Wednesday against Tasmania. Down two shots on the head and all square on the card, John played the winning bowl which was a magnificent draw shot to place his team in the Grand Final of the Fours.

The other Fours were Kenn Rogers, David Benton, John Peterson, and Gerrald Peterson; Paul Lewis, Tony Whenan, Garry Ryan, and John Guppy, and the fourth side John Hines, Darryl Smith, Mick Pavli, and Wally Tarca. After the Fours on Sunday, three bowl Pairs were played on the Monday, and Singles in sections of three on Tuesday. Play continued on Wednesday with Quarter Finals, followed by a ‘lay day’ and then the Finals on Friday. On their free day players joined their

partners on a paddle steamer trip on the River Murray and a barbecue lunch at Morrison’s Winery. In the Final the Victorian side Skippered by Alan Drury jumped away to a good start and led 14-6 at the 14th end of the 21 end game. John Edmonds’ South Australian four fought back to be down 15-17 on the 20th end. They held one shot with a toucher in the ditch and wanted the second wood in the ditch to force another end, but unfortunately, their winning streak did not hold out when they went down by one shot to the Victorians 16-17.The event is open to all ‘Firies’, current or retired and social members. Anyone interested in joining the contingent to Tasmania next year should contact Greg Edmonds stationed at the Glen Osmond Metropolitan Fire Station or email [email protected]

SaPSaSaThe annual SAPSASA Bowls Championships were conducted on Friday 11 March at the Lockleys Bowling Club, with clear blue skies providing perfect conditions for what would turn out to be a great day of bowling. There were 42 Triples and 37 Singles entries received for the annual carnival from schools covering all areas of the State. The morning started with teams in groups of four playing a round robin competition to determine who would make it through to the Finals in the afternoon.Throughout the day the hotly contested race for the Finals produced some fantastic games, however, in the end, as it always does, it came down to two teams/players.In the Open Triples, the two teams were Lenswood Primary School (Team #5) and West Lakes Shore School (Team #3) who produced one of the tightest finishes possible, with the game coming down to the very last bowl when on the second last bowl, Lenswood looked as though they might have stolen the win. However, the bowl agonisingly rolled a centimetre or two too far, giving shot and the win to West Lakes. In the Boy’s Singles it was West Lakes Shore again, with Aaron Fuss winning all his games en route to claiming his

first SAPSASA Gold Medal. In the Girl’s Singles the battle came down to Tayla Schrapel and Lynsey Trenorden, with Tayla emerging victorious in another close battle.Bowls SA would like to thank the Lockleys Bowling Club, Trish Fuss, all the schools, teachers, parents, volunteers and the students for making the day the success that it was.

SaSSSaWith 11 teams entered there was always a fair chance that Woodcroft College would emerge victorious at the 2011 SASSSA Bowls Championships, and that is exactly what occurred. The Final saw Woodcroft College Team #4 pitted against Woodcroft College Team #1 in a highly competitive battle. The game came down to the fifth and final end, with scores locked at 3-all. Eventually though it was Woodcroft #4 that prevailed by picking up two shots on the final end, capping off a fantastic day at Holdfast Bay. With close to 100 students participating from over a dozen different schools in Open Triples and Open Singles competitions, the day was a big success. The Open Singles contest was intense throughout the whole day. Brother and sister, Jono and Sara Voigt, faced off in the Semi-finals for a place in the Final with Jono taking home the bragging

rights after a 7-1 victory. Jake Golding, his opponent in the Final, also had a comfortable Semi-final victory over Pru Goonan 5-1. The Final between Jono and Jake was however very close with Jono taking the win 4-3 after five ends to be crowned the Open Singles Champion. Thank you to the schools, teachers/coordinators, students, volunteers and members of the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club for a fantastic day.

With floor plans still being discussed, quotes to be obtained from builders, and the months of rebuilding, the new Clubhouse is still a long way off.Despite this members have continued to bowl throughout the season with the assistance of the Millicent and Naracoorte Clubs and two very successful tournaments were held on our behalf. A sincere thank you to all the South Australian Clubs that have come to our aid with donations and help; this generosity has added to our building fund quite considerably. The Club is waiting on the outcome of a submission for a grant from the Tornado Relief Recovery Fund made available to organisations in our area, and hopefully this will enable us to commence building before the 2011/12 season. To get through, local members and friends have erected a temporary Clubhouse/Kitchen, Bar and storage area using shipping containers. These ‘cosy’ buildings enable us to carry on with meetings, entertain our night bowlers and have some social time together after games. Our greenkeeper and his workers have the greens running very well, and we’re pleased to report that we have gained four new members through our well run Night Bowls competition.

The last decade has seen the erosion of civil liberties and rights of the individual within the community to a worrying degree from my perspective. On 23 December 2010 the Supreme Court of South Australia handed down a decision in a matter where a question of law had been reserved. In that case an accused was charged with two counts of rape of his wife. The alleged offences occurred in 1963. An issue was whether the offence of rape by a spouse was an offence in 1963. As repulsive as it may seem now, the common law did not recognise rape within marriage at that time.In amendments in 1976 of the Criminal Law Consolidation Act, the presumption of marriage of itself meaning consent to sexual intercourse was abolished. A complaint was made almost 50 years later from the date of the alleged offending. Had the husband been charged shortly after the events, say within five years or so, the defendant would have had available to him the presumption at common law that sexual intercourse with the wife was consensual. Having had that defence abolished in 1976 the defendant was placed on trial in 2010. Should the defendant be put to trial on standards which changed some many years after the alleged offending and where a defence was available at the time? The Supreme Court of South Australia in the 2-1 decision found that the effect of the rule change in 1976 had a retrospective effect, not just into the future, from the time of the amendment. What this means is that the defendant could be charged with offences which at the time he committed the offending were not offences against the law as it then stood.

The nature of the alleged offending does add difficulty to discussion of the principle. Rape in marriage is something that should never have been tolerated but for whatever reason it did form a peculiar aspect of the common law for a long time.In 1976 when the amendment was made, it was not clear that it was only to effect conduct into the future. The court referred to authority that said the common law, once abolished is retrospective as well as prospective in its application to conduct in the community. It raises an interesting conundrum.

In the case before the Supreme Court the defendant has now returned to be tried on the original charges, the court having stated that it was possible and appropriate to do so. In the modern context we do not have to look too far for a similar occurrence. David Hicks was charged by an American Military Tribunal for conduct which offended laws that were only created after his conduct had occurred. In that case it was clearly intended that the laws would have retrospective effect. The rights of the individual in the community can be diminished in many ways. Retrospectivity is yet another one. Before the parliament currently is a Bill to amend the Motor Vehicles Act. In the original Bill there was an intention apparent for the law to have a retrospective effect. That will potentially prejudice claims that are already in the system. This shows a leaning towards the aims of the government and its agencies and the State outweighing the rights of the individual. Is that how it should be? Workcover Corporation sent a concern through the injured workers fraternity in 2010 when it indicated that it was going to change a particular policy it had. The policy was to change a rule with respect to how they dealt with claims for negligence against host employers or third party wrong doers. This policy had been in place for many, many years and worked well to the benefit of the system the injured and ultimately Workcover Corporation by way of its recovery. The decision by Workcover Corporation regarding its policy took over 12 months to be clarified and injured workers had been given advice and had acted accordingly with the former policy. Retrospective change or even an abrupt change to policy regarding claims that already existed would have had a disastrous effect on a number of entitlements that the injured may have had potentially. It would make many

cases potentially non viable or too risky for the clients to continue to deal with. It is difficult to imagine that Workcover Corporation were unaware of what that effect might be. Ultimately they nominated a date, relatively late in 2010 from which a new policy would exist. The point is that retrospectivity needs to be clearly considered and in most cases outlawed. People’s rights can be eroded subtly by that mechanism as they are by others. We as individuals need to be conscious of this issue. If you went through half a season playing bowls in accordance with the rules as they were in existence at the start of the season then the executive in its wisdom changed the rules mid season which meant that some points were lost for past victories, you would be suitably annoyed. The motivation for retrospectivity and legislation needs to be considered on each occasion. Governments are concerned with matters bigger than individual rights. That is why retrospectivity should not form the part of any laws that affect individual behaviour and entitlements unless it is completely and absolutely necessary, not due to some political expediency or a presumed economic benefit. Retrospective Amendments have the same effect as do more blatant removal of rights and entitlements. This can have a drastic affect on the way you live your life. Just ask the husband charged with rape 50 years after the event. Or the injured worker who brought a common law claim against the wrongdoer in good faith and spent 18 months wondering whether he had wasted his time, money and effort. Or perhaps even David Hicks. The State and its agencies are undoubtedly made up of good people but their objectives and aims can conflict with the protection of rights which requires vigilance and a balancing act on a full time basis. The battle for them is constant.

Following country and metro qualifying events, the Modbury Bowling Club played host to the final two days of the Bowls SA State Triples on Sunday and Monday, March 6 and 7, 2011.Scott Thulborn, newly appointed as a State Skipper, teamed with his father Dave Thulborn and Brett Davis to win the Men’s title; the Adelaide threesome defeating State teammate Wayne Ruediger’s triple 24-9. In the Semi-finals, Ruediger teamed with Luke Pietersma and Simon Dorr (Payneham) to defeat Modbury’s Craig Mills, Rhys Taylor and Matt Romaine 23-18. Ruediger’s team broke out to an early lead before Mills’ front end found their range to put the home club triple in front with three ends to go. However, the experience of Ruediger, Pietersma and Dorr showed through at the end to secure a Finals berth with a five shot victory. The other Semi saw Thulborn’s triple struggle early before defeating Marion’s Ken Holtham, Rex Whitehead and Scott Andreassen 25-14.

The Final was set to be a thriller but from the outset the Adelaide trio was awesome. Dave Thulborn on the mat set up Brett and Scott all match and with six ends to go, the game was over and the Adelaide greenkeeper secured another title, while father Dave Thulborn and Brett Davis realised their first State event win. With entries in the Women’s draw down on previous years, the Semi-finalists were known after the knockout rounds at Kensington/Marryatville a week prior. After an eight day break, Payneham’s Laini Murray Skippered clubmate Joan Prosser and Hawthorn’s Susan Jenkins to a seven shot win over Ascot Park’s Kelli Wray 22-15 to claim the Women’s trophy. The closely contested

Semi-finals saw Murray’s team come through by one shot, 16-15, over the Brighton trio of Heather Souness, Susan McAndrew and Ann Duddy while Wray teamed up with U18 stars Renee McPharlin (Balaklava) and Breeanna Dickson (Payneham) to record a two shot win over Modbury’s Jackie Barber, Sandy Weinert and Robyn Stanbury (Modbury) 19-17.The Final saw Murray get out to a good lead early and they seemed to be cruising until a late surge by Wray’s team. Being down five shots, Murray’s last bowl killed what was the pivotal end to spur her team on to victory and sink any possible chance of Wray leading her junior teammates to victory.

Mt Pleasant Bowling Club’s Annual Hotels Day was held on Tuesday 8 March 2011, which also happened to be

International Women’s Day.Bowls is above all a traditional sport. It is claimed that Sir Francis Drake played bowls as the Spanish Armada sailed up the English Channel in 1588. However, many of the somewhat more recent traditions of the Australian game have long since gone by the wayside. No more is it all whites on the greens, no more the careful measuring of the height of ladies’ skirts above the grass before every game. The choice

of bowls was black or maybe dark brown, but now all range of colours are on offer. There is however one tradition which still thrives in some areas, in particular the Hills and outer metro clubs; that is the grand old tradition of Hotels Days. The Mount Pleasant Bowling Club had its Annual Hotels Day in March and everything was carefully arranged with a team roster on the blackboard, and a hot roast lunch being prepared in the kitchen, however, the only snag was the weather, which was atrocious. While the dismal skies and incessant rain put a severe damper on

weather and with wonderful hospitality from the host clubs, Past Presidents from Ceduna to Port MacDonnell enjoyed four days of great bowls and even greater fellowship.Twenty-eight teams of Men’s Fours commenced the Carnival at the Clarence Gardens on Tuesday 5 April and at the end of the day, seven teams had won both games, with the metropolitan team of David Partington, Gary Nichol, Ian Cox and David Plunkett leading the way.On day two, at Lockleys the Yorke Peninsula team of Murray Gerschwitz, John Kwarterski, Brenton Rowntree and former State President Vic Brown, was the only team to have won all four games. The Lower North team of Gordon Brooks, Ian Dinham, Grant Croser with Skipper John Hill, was in second spot with three wins and a draw. With a further six teams having three wins, the stage was set for a tight finish. However, positions did not change on the last day at Hope Valley, with Vic’s

and John’s teams winning both games.Twenty Women’s Fours teams played at Lockleys, with four teams winning both games. However, the metropolitan team of Dot Parry, Doris Thomas, Jan Underdown, Skipped by Maxine Savage, had a big shots up margin over the Lower Murray team of Kristeena Kirchner, Fay Bolton, Dianne Leathers and Skipper Faye Campbell. A record 34 teams competed in the Mixed Fours event, played at Clarence Gardens on the last day of the Carnival and in a closely contested competition, the metro team of Bev Maddocks, Colleen Dunn, Ian Cox, and Skipper David Plunkett just edged out the Lower Murray team of Mavis Lock, Deane Makin, Bev Makin and Skip Dean Lock. The Carnival concluded with a presentation dinner attended by 140 bowlers and special guests, Bowls SA President Ivy Kluske, her husband Des; Association Patron Bob Cooper and Rhonda; and sponsors Lawn Bowls Online’s Selwyn Child Snr and Jnr. With the assistance of Selwyn Snr, President Ivy presented the prizes to the winners to wrap up a thoroughly enjoyable week,

the highlight being the great day at Lockleys when 192 bowlers from all over the State joined together for fun and fellowship. The Past Presidents Association thanks sincerely the Bowling Clubs of Clarence Gardens, Lockleys and Hope Valley for their tremendous hospitality, great greens, great lunches and of course morning and afternoon tea, which no doubt contributed to the success of the Carnival.
