Gang member takes plea deal, likely to get 4 yearsBLADE STAFF

Jones

Days before his trial, amember of the Cherrywoodstreet gang entered Alfordpleas Friday to felonious as-sault, robbery, and participat-ing in a criminal gang.

Tyler Jones, 20, of the 2700block of Brentwood Avenue, did not admit guilt but en-tered the pleas to avoid a con-viction that could result in a

more severe sentence. His trial was to beginMonday in LucasCounty Common PleasCourt.

Jones faces up to 24years in prison whenhe is sentenced May 20by Judge Ian English. The judge said he likelywould impose a four-year sen-tence and consider releasing

Jones early dependingon his conduct.

As part of a pleaagreement, MichaelLoisel, an assistantcounty prosecutor, said he would ask thecourt to dismiss a fire-arm specification.

He told the courtJones was driving a car Nov. 3in the 100 block of West Dela-

ware Avenue when MarcusDavis, 28, passed the vehicle.

“Apparently, the defendanttook exception to that [and]ultimately caught up with theindividual,” Mr. Loisel said.“Evidence would’ve shownthat ... words were exchangedbetween him and Mr. Davis inmiddle of the street and thisdefendant, produced a hand-gun, and fired at least one shot

which struck Marcus Davis inthe chest.”

In a separate incident Sept.23, Mr. Loisel said Jones andco-defendant Jarome Reese,19, confronted Larry Keys af-ter he left a carryout in the 900block of North Huron Street. The men stole gold chainsfrom around Mr. Keys’ neckand took his cell phone.

Shelton

A Toledo man first thoughtto have fired the shots thatkilled a man entered Alfordpleas and was found guiltyThursday of two felonious as-sault counts.

Prosecutors said JonathonShelton, 20, of the 900 blockof GordonStreet, firedeight shots atMartel Milleron Dec. 21,but police be-lieve the shotthat struckand ki l ledMiller, 22,came from another shooter.

Bryan Thomas, Jr., 20, ofthe 3200 block of KimballAvenue, is charged with mur-der, felonious assault, dis-charge of a firearm over apublic road, and participat-ing in a criminal gang stem-ming from Miller’s death.

Lucas County CommonPleas Judge James Bates toldShelton he faces up to 16years in prison when he issentenced May 17. He or-dered Shelton be kept sepa-rate from Mr. Thomas in theLucas County jail, whereboth are being held.

Michael Loisel, an assis-tant county prosecutor, saidShelton was at a party at 815N. Ontario St., where he hadcontact with Miller. Sheltonknew Miller had a gun, andwhen they left, he encoun-tered Miller on the street.

“Shelton saw Martel Millerreaching for a gun, so Shel-ton pulled out his 9 mm andfired at him,” Mr. Loisel said.

After watching surveillancevideo and talking to wit-nesses, police determinedthat none of Shelton’s shotsstruck Miller.

Mr. Thomas is to have apretrial hearing Monday be-fore Judge Stacy Cook.
