A B O U T T H E R O L E Canoe Wales is seeking a new Chief Executive Officer to provide inspiring leadership for our staff team and develop the partnerships and programmes needed to get more people on the water and ensure a sustainable future for the organisation. As the national governing body for paddlesport, our mission is to inspire and support more people across Wales to go paddling. We are nearly two years into our current strategic plan, and despite the impact of COVID-19, we are in the middle of exciting changes to how we work and what

we offer to members, new paddlers and partner organisations. We are also seeing unprecedented demand for outdoor recreation, and your job as our new CEO will be to position Canoe Wales to make the most of this unique opportunity to get more people than ever onto the water.

You will be a thoughtful and caring leader, with the ability to listen to staff, members and directors and translate this insight into a strategy to drive growth and improve the quality of our services. You should have a talent for diplomacy, the

confidence to make tough decisions and a knack for building consensus around solutions to contentious issues. With outstanding organisational and communication skills, you should enjoy forging and nurturing partnerships with a diverse range of organisations and funding partners. And, you should be comfortable working with senior leaders and key partners, including Sport Wales and British Canoeing, to ensure we maintain strong and productive relationships.

As part of our commitment to the highest standards of governance, you will ensure we continue to have a strong policy framework and excellent systems and procedures for safeguarding and child protection. You should be comfortable with budgets, ensuring our income and expenditure stays on track and allocating resources where they’re needed most.

Most importantly, you will be an expert at helping others be their best – supporting your team to use their talent, passion and experience to continue to

improve the quality and impact of our programmes. You must also have a strong commitment to equality to continue the momentum behind our innovative work to make sure everyone has the opportunity to find a lifelong passion for paddlesport.

As a small organisation with a unique work culture, this is an exciting opportunity for an experienced senior leader. We have a policy of fully-flexible home working, where employees have the freedom to set their own hours to deliver their objectives. While

most of your work will be done from home, you will also need to travel throughout Wales from time to time to meet with staff or partners, attend events and represent Canoe Wales. You do not need to have a background in paddlesport – what matters most is your ability to bring inspiring leadership to a talented team.

We also strongly encourage women and other people who are under-represented in paddlesport and sports leadership to apply.
