In-stock, on-time and nextday deliveries, reflectimproved Parts service

As an overview, approaching two-thirds oftractors sold in Kent today are from John Deere. One might claim that it would be relatively easy

to sell ‘the’ market leading product, but the truth isthat farmers wouldn’t buy the best unless it had theproper after-sales back-up. And after-sales is toppriority at Burden Bros Agri Ltd. A team ofdedicated parts personnel who have all undergone

thorough product andparts managementtraining, can be foundat both depots in thegroup. Expansion offacilities is already welladvanced at theStockbury depot andwill be fully operational

before harvest to increase stock levels, parts lines andfill rates. But in the rare event of a common part notbeing available, there is always emergency supplyfrom John Deere for next morning delivery.

‘There’s nothing worse than having a machinestood idle in the middle of harvest or when drillingconditions are just right, purely because a simplecomponent is unavailable,’ said Dale Burden. ‘We arefarmers too, so we know how important it is to havethe proper after-sales parts back-up to minimise anydowntime. Most machines will, at some time or otherhave a breakdown, and it’s our job and ourcommitment to make sure we fulfil the needs of ourcustomer and ensure we can provide the right back-up when it’s needed.”

Although the mainfranchise is John Deere, the parts department atboth Stockbury andFramfield carrycomponents for the fullrange of ancillaryequipment and spareparts for most other common makes of tractors, including oil filters, belts and special oils. It’s truly a‘one-stop-shop.’ If you are unable to get what youwant at your usual supplier, it’s quite likely thatBurden Bros Agri will have the right components toget you going again – so, if you haven’t already, youmight consider giving them a try.

Machine breakdowngets fast response fromhighly-trained technicians

Some farmers like to carry out their ownintermediate servicing, but when it comesdown to repairs of technical components, it’s

usually left to fully trained technicians – theprofessionals. Farm equipment today is unlike thosemachines of yesteryear, there are far more technicaladvancements and electronic gadgetry behindmuch of the operating systems today – and unlessyou are fully trained or qualified, it’s not for thefeint-hearted.

The service facilities at Burden Bros Agri Ltdare manned by fully trained and qualifiedprofessionals many of whom are qualified to LTA(Land-based Technician Accreditation) standard –the highest level in the industry. They have ayoung company, a young team of enthusiastic andvery capable technicians, with specialist skills tofocus on individual machine groups. For examplethere’s combine specialists, self-propelled forageharvester specialists, technicians for sprayers, smalltractors, large tractors and also for the latestprecision-farming systems using AMS. Astechnological advances continue to strive forward, product today is becoming less serviceable on thefarm therefore much investment has to go intotraining technicians to deal with these newtechnologies. Although machinery today is morecomplicated in construction, it’s actually becomingeasier to identify and diagnose faults or errorsbecause these technicians use the latest diagnosticequipment to access operating and error codedata.

As through the rest of the organisation, BurdenBros Agri are investing heavily in new service staff,to expand their servicing capabilities and to meetcustomer demands, especially through the peakperiods. Every time you visit their facilities, it’s likelyyou will meet new team members and this reflectsthe massive amount of investment the company ismaking in staff and facilities for the long – termcommitment to customer satisfaction and the bestcustomer experience.

Ask anyone about the attention todetail and commitment that theBurden Bros group apply to theirfarming and contract farmingbusiness and they’ll tell you that it’ssecond to none. The Burdens farmsome 1600Ha of their own, rentedand contract farming sites growingrotations of Wheat, OSR, Maize, Grassand Oats. In fact they are one of the largest Maizeproducers in the UK at 640Ha. They produce all theirown feed for a 1000 head suckler unit withfollowers, which are all grazed on 2000Ha ofconservation grass. Their operation attractsnumerous farmer group visits from the UK andEurope and also from local schools – they representmodern farming at the cutting edge. In fact, currently, they are the only farming enterprise in theUK, trialling variable nutrient application with a new,cutting-edge technology from Fritzmeier ofGermany.

Their contracting business serves the entire South-east of England where they specialise in drilling, cultivating, spraying, fertiliser spreading, forageharvesting, combine harvesting, straw baling, andmuck spreading, to name but a few. Every prime

mover in their fleet is geared-up withJohn Deere’s ‘AutoTrac’ for theultimate in precision farmingtechniques. The John Deere 7450iSelf-propelled forage harvesterboasts the latest ‘HarvestLab’analyser which enables eachcustomer to receive an accurateprint-out of factual crop data for

proper alignment to production techniques. This isan important service to their customers as theyforage harvest around 1600Ha of crop every year.

Working in co-operation with Agrovista, theBurden Bros enterprise is the only farm hosting OSRtrials in the UK, other than at agricultural colleges, and so they receive many farmers and growersthroughout the South of England at three annualopen days.

Like with all the other sectors in the Burden Brosgroup, much attention is given to expanding theteam of professional operators, who are trained toget the best out of their high output machines. Atthe end of the day, the company’s goal is maximisingcustomer satisfaction. They have an ethos that states– a good job done today, secures the work fortomorrow.

Farmers always buy from areliable, trusted source

When farmers purchase their new machineryfrom Burden Bros Agri Ltd, theyinvariably trade-in used equipment surplus

to requirements. Some of the equipment is retailedback into the area where customers are looking forgood used equipment, but for 30 years now, BurdenBros Machinery has been developing markets acrossthe UK and Ireland as well as on the internationalstage, to supply used equipment to discerningcustomers. Used machinery undergoes a carefulassessment of condition and performance capabilitiesto ensure satisfied customers, be they in Tonbridgeor Timbuktu.

“We are currently breaking over two hundredcombines , eighty tractors, tele-handlers and balersat the moment” said Guy Burden “ so there is lots ofchoice for our customers in the worldwide market. “Itravel the UK quite a lot, looking for good qualitysecond-hand farm equipment to fill the needs of mycustomers in the UK and countries all around theworld.”

Having a good outlet resource for used equipmentis essential for successful machinery dealers andBurden Bros Machinery has proven instrumental inmaintaining a good flow of equipment to strongsecond-hand markets in North and South America,Europe, Africa, Middle East, India and Australasia.Their reputation precedes them and manyestablished dealers throughout the UK have come torely on the specialist capabilities of Burden BrosMachinery, for fair prices and reliable transactions.

It’s all very well considering what you do or don’thave for now, but what of the future? We’vealready seen tremendous strides of innovation in

growing techniques and farm machineryspecification, but what does this all mean to thefarmer of tomorrow?

“Without sustainability, we have nothing” saidDale Burden. “Our ambition is to be here not onlyfor tomorrow, but for years to come, so that ourcustomers will always have high quality back-up.“We are building an enterprise that is long-lasting,something that is based on quality, that always givesthe best customer experience.”

Already going through planning stages are new, expanded facilities at the Stockbury branch, which initself will considerably increase workshop and partsfacilities. Someone once wisely said that ‘ thesalesman makes the first sale, but for subsequentsales, the parts and service departments hold thekey.’ That is not to suggest anything more thanwithout after-sales back-up of the highest level, customers will not return and invest in moreequipment. Sales, Parts and Service work together asan integrated team, providing the right choice ofmachinery for the progressive farmer, backing it upthrough the parts department with consumables andthe service department being there if there happensto be a breakdown or component failure.

New facilities will improve efficiency all round.

Better customer experience will mean more customersand greater demands on services. It’s an ever-changing cycle that needs to be planned, strategisedand managed on a regular basis. What worked wellyesterday, doesn’t necessarily mean that it will worktomorrow and so the company must grow and evolvewith the demands of the marketplace.

“We are fortunate in as much as being a family, with companies that span most of the farmingindustry” commented Dale Burden (pictured above)“ we are living and breathing the changes that areoccurring, and that helps us to see the future clearer.“Our farming and contracting business is alreadyinvolved with technologies that are under trials andtests and we can pass on that experience to ourcustomer users. “The used machinery business isgaining direct market feedback on a global basis, which means we can react faster to buyers indifferent markets. “But back here in the Kent, Surreyand Sussex area, Burden Bros Agri can pull on theexperiences of our family businesses, John Deere andall of our high-quality suppliers to ensure thatwhatever we sell, back-up, service and trade, thatthe ultimate goal has to be around customersatisfaction, after-sales service and the best customerexperience.”
