Class work and special student workexperiencesmustdemonstratehowtorelateeffectivelytoalltypesofpeopleandtoappreciatehowemotional,social, economic, political, and spiritual forces influence thebehaviorof thosewearehelping.We strive todevelop competent, ethical professionals with the knowledge, values and skills for effective practice withindividuals,families,groupsandcommunities,andwhocanprovideoutstandingleadershipinthefieldofsocialservices.Theprogrammissionisgroundedincoreprofessionalvaluesofservice,socialjustice,thedignityandworthoftheperson,theimportanceofhumanrelationships,integrity,competence,humanrights,andscientificinquiry.Thesevaluesareconsistentwiththeinternationalaffairsmissionoftheuniversityintermsofproducingsocialworkersmoresensitivetoculturaldiversityandcommittedintheirabilitytocontributetosocietyasawhole.Historically,competent,engagedandethicalleadersatthelocallevelhaveunderservedsouthwestMissouriandthesurroundingarea.Additionally,theregionisbeginningtoseeaninfluxofdiversecultures.Thus,themissionofthesocialworkdepartmentiswellmatchedwiththepolitical,economic,social,cultural,anddemographicenvironmentoftheregionandtothepurposeoftheprofession.SocialWorkProgramGoalsThesocialworkprogramgoalsreflectthepurposeofundergraduatesocialworkeducationandarederivedfromtheprogram’smission.Thesocialworkprogramgoalsareasfollows:1. Toprepareadiversestudentpopulationforgeneralistsocialworkpracticetoserveclientsystemsofvarioussizesandtypes.2. Toprovideaflexibleeducationalprogramthatincreasesthestudentsunderstandingofvariablesthataffect the bio-psycho-social-spiritual variables that affect the person within the environment and thecommunity,andtheglobalperspectives.3. To develop analytical skills and critical thinking that will encourage active participation in thedevelopment,evaluation,andimprovementofevidence-basedsocialworkknowledgeandskills.4. AllGeneralEducationrequirementsmustbemet2. CumulativeG.P.A.of2.75orbetterforALLcompletedcoursework3. PreferredcompletionofSW231withagradeofCorbetter;orenrollmentinthefirstsemesterConditionaladmissionisgrantedonacase-by-casebasiswhenanyorallofthethreeaboveitemsarenotmet.Additionally, completionand submissionofanapplicationpacket to theprogramby5:00p.m.onMarch15thoftheyearstudentisseekingadmissiontotheprogram.Incompletesubmissionswillnotbeconsidered.

Theadmissionsapplicationmustinclude:• Applicationform• Professionalresume• Threereferenceforms(family/friendreferenceswillnotbeaccepted)• Officialcollegetranscript• ProfessionalStatementAllrequiredformscanbefoundathttp://www.mssu.edu/academics/arts-sciences/social-work/ReceivedapplicationsarefiledandauditedforcompletenessbytheBSWprogramdirector.TheGPAand various coursework requirements are verified asmet. Complete applications,whichmeet alleducationrequirements,aredistributedtotheBSWAdmissionsCommittee,whichiscomprisedofallfull-timesocialworkfaculty,forreviewandrecommendations.TheCommitteemembersarechargedwithassessingthecandidateandselectingoneoffourdeterminations:1)fullyadmit,2)conditionallyadmitduetolowGPA,3)conditionallyadmitduetomissinggeneraleducationcourses,or4)donotadmit.TheapplicationsarereturnedtotheBSWprogramdirectorwhothengrantsadmissiontothetopcandidatesuptothenumberofadmissionssetfortheyear.Non-priority review of applications occurs for applications received from March 16th until alladmissionslotsarefilled.VariancestothisprocedureisatthediscretionoftheDepartmentChairandonlyafterapplicantshaverequestedinwritingtheirreasoningforavariance.NotificationofAdmissionDecisionApplicantsarenotifiedbye-mailoftheiracceptanceordenialintotheprogram,andifconditionallyadmitted,theexpectationandtimeframefortheiradmissiondecisiontoeitherbecomefullyadmittedorplacedondefermentuntil conditionsaremet.Applicantsare requested tosendareturnemailstatingtheiracceptanceornon-acceptanceoftheadmissionoffer.Studentsareassignedanacademicadvisorfromthesocialworkdepartmentwhomeetswiththemtocompleteaplanofstudiesthroughgraduationandtocompletetherequireduniversitypaperworkforadmissionintotheprogram.Itisduringthismeetingwiththeiradvisorthatanyconditionsonadmissionareexplainedtothestudent.Theseconditionscenteroncompletionofanyremainingliberalartscourses.Onceadmitted,studentsarerequiredtohaveaplanofstudy(eitherfull-timeorpart-time)onfileandarerequiredtocompletethecurriculuminsequenceasoutlinedontheplanofstudy.TransferofCreditCreditsearnedatotheruniversitiesareevaluatedoneoftwowaysforacceptance.Forallnon-socialworkcourses,theuniversityhasapolicyofwhatcoursestransfer,andhowtheytransferfromotheruniversities. If a studentbelieves the transfercreditshavenotbeencorrectlyevaluated, they canrequest the respective department head re-evaluate the course for credit using the standarduniversitycriteria.SocialworkcoursecreditsareevaluatedonanindividualbasisbytheBSWprogramdirector,ensuringthecreditswereawardedatanaccreditedprogramandusingacarefulreviewofthe transfer course syllabus content. Nomore than 9 credit hours of social work classes will betransferredfromanotherinstitutionsothatMSSUcanensurecompetenciesandpracticebehaviorsareobtained.Ifthestudentbelievesthishasnotbeendonefairly,thematterisreferredtotheDeanofArtsandSciencewhosedecisionisfinal.TheSocialWorkProgramdoesnotgrantcreditforeitherlifeorworkexperienceinlieuofanysocialworkcourseortheFieldExperience.Manyofthestudentsbringexperienceintotheclassroomandit

TheFieldExperienceUpon completionor enrollment in the required courses, studentsmakeapplication for the FieldExperience.AdmissiontotheFieldExperiencerequiresareviewofacademicperformance,andanassessment of the student’s professional performance and ethical conduct in the social workprogram.
