Taylors Hill is on track to sell its rst million-dollar property this year.

A 55-square, single-level property on Darwin Street is on the market with an asking price of between $1.05 and $1.15 million double the suburbs present $515,000 median house price.

e house on a 1081-square-metre block includes ve bedrooms, three bathrooms, two double garages, and in-ground pool.

Barry Plant Taylors Lakes director James

Taylors Hill hits $1m markHatzimoisis is condent the property, which went on the market just before Christmas, will go beyond the million-dollar mark.

Its a stunning home its the sort of home where you dont have to spend a cent; you just move in and thats it, Mr Hatzimoisis said.

Its a high-end property so it needs a specic sort of buyer whos going to want something that spreads out over a single level.

Real Estate Institute of Victoria spokesman Paul Bird said at least two Taylors Hill properties had sold for more than $900,000

in the past 12 months. Neighbouring suburb Caroline Springs joined the million-dollar club last year, with two of the suburbs house sales breaking the price barrier. Barry Plant Caroline Springs sold a double-storey Waterford Close property for more than its advertised price of $1.15 million on July 23, and Sweeney Estate Agents followed suit less than a fortnight aer, selling a ve-bedroom property on e Grange for an undisclosed price that was over $1 million.

Mr Hatzimoisis said when the Darwin Street

property sells, it could create a domino eect for high-end properties going on the market.

ere are certainly homes in Taylors Hill that are worth more than [a million], its just that they havent come up for sale, he said.

For homes to be at that level, theyre normally ones that people have built themselves and they tend to stay in them for a little while.

e area is relatively young so its a question of them actually putting the properties up for sale. Once theres some big sales, it spurs others to put their properties on the market.

Boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen get ready for a stellar day at the Southern Fiesta.

Southern Cross Grammar students and parents have joined forces to kick off their inaugural festival day with a big bang.

Parents and Friends Association chairwoman Leonie Harrison said the esta was about bringing community together to celebrate Australia and its multicultural life.

All proceeds from the schools festival day and fete will go towards buying playground equipment for students.

The esta at Southern Cross Grammar, 2-20 Lanceeld Drive, Caroline Springs, will start at 11am and run until 4pm on Sunday, March 22.

potentially compromising their childs school- readiness and learning outcomes.

Deer Park mother of three Zelalem Mikre said single or low-income families, in particular, might be forced to keep their children at home.

My rst child went to kinder, and it helped his development so much, she said.

He learnt things he couldnt have learnt at home. Its really unfair that not all children may get the same chance.

Brimbank council community well-being director Neil Whiteside said the council had written to the federal government expressing

Kindergarten fees could be put beyond the reach of many Brimbank parents if the federal government cuts funding, according to one of the municipalitys main childcare providers.

Early Childhood Management Services (ECMS) is urging the Abbott government to renew the plan under which it funds 4.25 hours of kindergarten a week.

Under the current arrangements, 15 hours of kindergarten are provided a week in the year before children start school, with the state government funding the other 10.75 hours.

e agreement is set to expire in December

this year, raising concerns that kindergartens will have to increase fees paid by parents and carers.

ECMS oers 1075 four-year-old kindergarten places across its 16 Brimbank centres.

ECMS chief executive Bernie Nott said if the federal funding was abolished, early learning would be out of reach for many parents.

ose working families now benetting from universal access will have to nd other arrangements for 170 hours a year, Mr Nott said. Alternatively, parents may be forced to accept fewer hours of learning and care,

dismay at the possibility the agreement might be dropped.

Brimbank council is concerned that without ongoing funding, fees will rise and, as a result, the level of kindergarten participation will drop due to its aordability, he said.

e Department of Education did not respond before Star Weeklys deadline. However, it renewed its commitment last year aer an independent review into whether the states had met preschool access targets.

Police are investigating a suspicious re in Sunshine North that burned six hectares of grassland.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokes- woman Meg Rayner said that despite being near an industrial area, the re was contained to vacant land nearby and no neighbouring properties were threatened.

Fireghters were called to the incident at Bunnett Street about 7.30pm on Sunday, February 8, and contained the re within 35 minutes.

Crews remained on scene for several hours to ensure there were no are-ups.

e re has been deemed suspicious and police are investigating.

MFB gures show that of the 648 res attended by reghters in Brimbank between February last year and January this year, more than 170 were deemed suspicious.

However, it was an electrical fault that sparked a re at a Keilor Downs property last Wednesday.

Fireghters were called to the vacant Heysham Place house about 8pm aer a smoke alarm alerted neighbours.

Smoke and ames were belching from the two-storey brick unit, which is the middle one of three, when reghters arrived.

e re took 25 minutes to bring under control and was contained to the lounge room on the lower level.

Commander David Woods praised the eorts of the reghters in ensuring the res spread was minimised.

Extensive smoke damage throughout the unit has made the property uninhabitable for its ve occupants.

Sick kids across the west will benet from state-of-the-art facilities at Sunshine Hospitals upgraded childrens ward.

e new ward was opened last week.It will care for more than 7300 sick kids a

year and includes a renovated bathing room, a negative-pressure room for infection control, a ve-bed day procedure recovery unit, a high-care unit with new monitoring systems for patients with asthma and other respiratory problems, and a child-friendly sta centre.

Before its redevelopment, the ward, the only dedicated childrens health care centre in the region, was in desperate need of an upgrade.

A healing haven for kidsRonald McDonald House Parkville chairman Mark Hookey, Alex Cockram, Western Health Foundation board chairman Bob Scarborough, Jenny Sadler and Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia chief executive Malcolm Coutts. (Supplied)

Local businesswoman and mother of three Jenny Sadler, who owns eight McDonalds franchises across the west, worked closely with the Western Health Foundation on a year-long public appeal that raised more than $1.1 million.

Ms Sadler herself raised more than $118,000 from a fundraising dinner at the Moonee Valley Racing Club.

e hospital raised money through the annual Western Health race day at Flemington, community events such as the Walk West along the Maribyrnong River, and signicant donations by local businesses.

Ronald McDonald House Charity donated $200,000 to fully fund a family room to create

a temporary home-away-from home for the families of sick kids.

e transformation is amazing, Ms Sadler said.

Western Health chief executive Alex Cockram said the upgrade meant Sunshine Hospital was better equipped to deal with rising demand for paediatric care across the west.

e childrens ward has been transformed from one of the most rundown wards within Western Health, to one of the most engaging, she said.

Watergardens Town Centre and nine McDonalds stores in the west raised $8000 last December by running a gi wrap service in the lead-up to Christmas.

Melbourne Water (MW) is under pressure to remove a stockpile of asbestos-contaminated sediment dredged from Stony Creek.

e water authority has been delivered a clean-up notice from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) the third such notice since November to manage the risk of asbestos contamination along a stretch of creek from the Laurel Street Bridge at St Albans to the creeks junction with the Yarra River near the West Gate Bridge.

MW has until June this year to assess the areas where dredged sediment has been stockpiled to determine the level and extent of any contamination, and to provide a human health risk assessment.

MW must also submit a plan for the ongoing management, reuse or disposal of any waste sediment.

e asbestos is not in a form that can be breathed in, and air monitoring conrms it is below detectable limits. Independent testing has advised that the risk to human health is negligible to low.

EPA chief executive ocer Nial Finegan said the new notice built on the prior notices requiring Melbourne Water to investigate all previous dredging activities.

[It] complements the earlier work by [assessing] any risks from asbestos posed by the practice of reusing some of the dredged sediments on land abutting the creek, Mr Finegan said.

A big, loving family and lots of good, home-cooked meals have taken lovebirds Carmen and Henry Busuttil from the altar to an anniversary of diamond proportions.

e St Albans couple will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this ursday aer a chance encounter in their native Malta turned into a lifetime of happiness.

e pair met when Henry was on leave from the British navy and have been inseparable ever since.

I was at my brothers place, and I saw her [across the street], he said. We met that day, and I took a liking straight away.

e pair dated for two years before tying the knot on February 19, 1955.

e Busuttils did not get the chance to go on honeymoon because Henry was stationed in Egypt.

Son Philip was born in December that year. Six other children Tommy, Mario, Leon, Joey, and twins Helen and Gracie followed. e couple now have 16 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In 1959, the Busuttils moved to Australia and lived in Deer Park for 11 years before building their own house in St Albans, which theyve lived in for the past 45 years.

Carmen, 78, said the way to her husbands heart was through his stomach.

When I cook, he eats everything; theres no complaints, she said.

According to Henry, 82, for cooking, shes a champion.

e couple have been back to Malta twice since coming to Australia and occasionally they visit their son Philip in Queensland. Daughter Gracie Caruana said her parents had always put their burgeoning family before travel.

Catholic Regional Colleges Sydenham campus is all smiles aer its trade training centre received a glowing endorsement from the federal government.

e centre, which operates ve businesses on-site, was lauded by a federal government independent review into the Trade Training Centre in Schools program as an international showcase for entrepreneurial eort in the delivery of trade courses in schools.

e campus opened in 2010 and delivers qualications in bakery, construction, hospitality, manufacturing and printing, aiming to address national skills shortages. It received $6 million in federal funding for its programs.

Students get practical experience working at one of the ve on-site businesses: the CRC Bakery, Quatrefoils Restaurant, Sydsigns, Frames @ CRC, and the Crate eatre.

e government review found that the

Sydenham campus could claim ongoing success stories, with past students progressing into apprenticeships at Sotel, Ferguson Plarre Cakes, continuing in and completing certicates in patisserie at William Angliss Institute, apprenticeships in signage with further studies at Victoria University, and many more.

CRC Sydenham principal Brendan Watson said it was no surprise the school had been singled out. ere was always going to be a risk opening ve businesses let alone handing over the businesses to students so they could make mistakes and learn, Mr Watson said.

e model was sound, as was our resolve to provide every educational opportunity to the students. While the rst year was a challenge to build the businesses the local community was fast to respond with their patronage and support.

A Sunshine West woman is living in fear aer two attempted burglaries at her house in less than six months.

e womans daughter, who did not want to be identied, said her mother had been distressed and paranoid since the most recent attempted break-in on January 11.

About 10pm, she heard noise outside and, because the roller shutters were down, she went to check it out and could hear someone running away, the woman said.

We denitely recommend alarms; theyre the best thing and can alert the family that someones inside. CCTV is great, too, but alarms are the rst line of defence, Senior Sergeant Symons said.

e woman says her mum, aged 55, is particularly fearful given her home is close to

e rst attempt was on September 1 aer the family had gone out for dinner.

We le the roller shutter open and arrived home about 9.30pm, the daughter said. eyd managed to open the screen door with a crowbar and had tried to break into the sliding door. Its been a bit scary since we repaired all the damage from last time, and someones already trying to break in again.

Brimbanks Senior Sergeant Shannon Symons conrmed the womans reports and said the house had been scanned on both occasions for forensic evidence.

Allison Street, where a man was shot dead by an armed intruder in his house on February 3.

Police are still searching for the killer, who they believe may still be armed aer they failed to nd a weapon at the address.

Its still not known if it was a targeted attack, so its frightening to think theres a burglar out there with a gun, picking random houses, the daughter said.

Anyone with any information about the shooting or attempted burglaries can report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Caroline Springs hairdresser Shaun Broadbent uses his skills to provide a special service for young people facing cancer treatment.

e 23-year-old has joined cancer charity Challenge and goes to the Royal Childrens Hospital on the last Tuesday of every month to give children and their parents a haircut, styling or shaving in the privacy of their hospital wards.

I really wanted to give back to the community, Mr Broadbent said.e haircuts can help families step out of reality for 10 minutes, half an hour or an hour. Any time away from reality is good in those situations.

Caroline Springs teenager Bianca-Rose says such a service would have been treasured when she was undergoing treatment for stage 2 Hodgkins lymphoma.

Like any 14-year-old teen battling cancer, all she wanted was to be able to save her long, silky, brown hair.

I didnt think I was going to lose my hair, said Bianca-Rose, who is in remission.

I went to the salon of a lady I know, but it was quite traumatic. ere were people waiting for their appointments, people having their appointments it was like a shbowl with everyones eyes on you.

Challenge chief executive David Rogers said having a hairdresser come into the hospital was a great way to assist during dicult times.

For more information about the service, call Challenge hospital activities co-ordinator Renee Charlton on 9329 8474.

e tragic death of a ve-year-old boy found living in squalor in Brimbank has sparked a change in the states birth registration practices.

Spencer Oatley (a pseudonym used by the County Court) died in 2012 aer cutting his foot on an open cat food can on the oor of a lth-ridden house, but authorities didnt even know he existed as his birth was never registered.

Spencers death was the trigger for the state government to implement recommendations from an inquiry into very isolated children, requiring every birth at a Victorian hospital to be automatically registered.

Child protection authorities will also receive alerts if children miss key milestones, including immunisations, maternal and child health check-ups, and enrolments at kindergarten, primary and secondary schools.

Children and Young People Commissioner Bernie Geary, who conducted the inquiry, said it was astounding none of the new practices had previously been in place, and he called Spencers death a wake-up call.

We are thankful that the one positive thing that comes out of this little boys death will be some positive change, so there is a degree of honouring his life, Mr Geary said.

Currently, midwives and nurses at Victorian hospitals give parents a birth registration statement form to lodge within 60 days of their childs birth.

Former community services minister Mary Wooldridge ordered the inquiry at the

time of Spencers death. She called the case bewildering.

Its unusual that children would be completely o the radar, she said.

e boys parents pleaded guilty to criminal charges over the hazards their son and a surviving brother faced at home. e mother told police she had a hoarding problem but the family had never sought help.

Hoarding is estimated to aect about one in 20 households in Victoria. Salvation Army Social Housing Service support co-ordinator Keith Hunte said the Brimbank-based service gets several referrals a week from the Department of Human Services for tenants who have hoarding issues.

We engage with them and conduct a safety check to see if there are working smoke detectors and safe exits [in their homes], he said.

Brimbank council community well-being director Neil Whiteside said if the council was made aware of hoarding behaviours, it could involve other family members to connect with appropriate support services.

If [we] have concerns about the hygiene and safety of a child following a maternal and child health home visit, [we] report these concerns to child protection, Mr Whiteside said.

Keilor Park Cricket Club members are tickled pink with their plans for Pink Stumps Day on Saturday.

Keilor Park Recreation Reserve is the venue for this breast cancer fundraiser, with an aernoon of ne dining, champagne, giveaways and live entertainment ready to go.

Event organiser Kylie Garth says the annual event is always a hit, and last year it raised more than $2000 for the McGrath Foundation.

Its always a really fun day. Although we encourage everyone to bring along their mums, sisters, daughters, aunties and girlfriends, its not necessarily girls only, Ms Garth said.

e clubs second division mens team will play a Pink Test and Brimbank-based band Wheres Wally will perform live.

Rae and giveaway prizes include an

overnight stay at the Parkview Hotel, a $300 voucher for a blinds store, Fisher & Paykel kitchen cooking vouchers, Salt & Pepper home- wares, and Ooh La La handbags and wallets.

e McGrath Foundation, in its 10th year, is aiming to increase the number of foundation-funded breast care nurses across Australia to 110, to support 10,000 families this year. Foundation ambassador and director Tracy Bevan says Pink Stumps Day will play a vital role in reaching this goal.

Our McGrath breast care nurses are at the heart of what we do at the foundation, she said. Together, theyve helped support more than 30,000 Australian families.

With more than 156 nationalities calling Brimbank home, its only natural this is the perfect place to host a cricket World Cup.

Parsons Reserve, in Sunshine, will bring the world together on March 1, with friendly cricket matches as well as sideshow fun, a jumping castle, face painting and sausage sizzle to raise funds for the new childrens ward at Sunshine Hospital.

Funds raised will also go towards the purchase of a debrillator for Grand United Cricket Club.

World Cup of Sunshine organiser Simon Vallone said there were already a few teams onboard.

Weve got a mixture of community and multicultural teams joined up. Western Health are putting together a doctor and nurse team, weve got another team from Victoria University, and an Indian and Muslim team, the Ardeer community worker said.

It will be more of a family atmosphere rather than professional, and we want to bring the local cricketing community together. I think sometimes we lack that unity in Sunshine, and Im hoping this is a step towards it.

Entry is $5 a player and $35 for a team of seven. Teams are welcome to sign up on the day.

e childrens activities, including Milo Cricket, are by gold coin donation and have been provided using grants from Lead West and the Commonwealth Bank.

e event begins at 10am on March 1.

A Melbourne Airport bus service from Sunshine railway station could be on the cards if Brimbank council has its way.

e council has called on the state government to introduce the airport bus service following its review of the governments new Project 10,000 Trains, Roads, Jobs transport policy.

Council administrator John Tanner said the recent change in government had meant a change in transport projects aecting

at would be a great step forward in not only servicing Sunshine and Brimbank, but also the regional rail network from Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo, he said.

It opens up great opportunities for Brimbank as a result of that and certainly meets the criteria to improve public transport to the airport.

e council report praised the governments decision to remove the Main Road and Furlong Road level crossings at St Albans, and the Melton Highway level crossing at Sydenham, and advised it would be best to remove all three

Brimbank. He said while a Melbourne Airport rail link was not a high priority for the state government, a bus service from Sunshine to the airport was an alternative way of improving public transport access for people in the west and regional areas.

level crossings simultaneously to minimise these disruptions to the travelling public.

e council also: Called for electrification of the Melton

    train line and grade separations at the Calder Park Drive and Station Road level crossings;

Voiced its ongoing support for the western section of the East West Link and called land in Brooklyn to be reserved; and

Highlighted the need for safety improve- ments at the Kings and Taylors roads roundabout and the Sunshine Avenue and Old Calder Highway intersection.

Every fortnight for the past 25 years, the Sunshine Stompers have put on their walking shoes and gone for a stroll.

It all started in 1990 when the then-Sunshine council started up a walking group at Brimbank Park.

Sunshine resident Gilbert Bell, who was there at the rst walk, remembers more than 60 people coming together in the early days and travelling all over Melbourne by train to walk around dierent locations.

Numbers diminished as the years went by, but the group, which became known as the Sunshine Stompers, still draws at least a dozen faithful walkers every fortnight.

Mr Bell, 93, has stayed on for the entire quarter-century, as have original committee members Arthur and Shirley Anstey.

Mr Bell said the group usually walks up to eight kilometres before stopping for lunch.

Weve been to Ferntree Gully, he said. e other day we went to Williamstown. Were going to the Botanical Gardens next we go all over the place, he said.

Ive always enjoyed it. I enjoy the people and Ive made quite a few friends.

e Sunshine Stompers will celebrate their 25th birthday on May 11.

For more information about the Sunshine Stompers, call Mr Bell on 9311 4103.

Fines, debts and expensive mobile phone plans are the issues that most lead Brimbanks young people into legal trouble, according to the Sunshine Youth Legal Centre.

e centre provides legal advice and support to people aged 15 to 25.

e services clinical legal supervisor, Nareeda Lewers, said young people getting numerous infringements and then struggling to keep up with paying them was a common scenario.

is includes public transport nes, trac nes and tollway nes, she said. We work with disadvantaged youth, who are oen

Another big one is young people living in share houses, where the bill is in one persons name and another person refuses to pay.

We help people negotiate with companies, seeking a way to resolve the issue in a way thats feasible.

e Sunshine Youth Legal Centre is run by youth service e Youth Junction, which also deals with heier criminal matters through

dealing with homelessness, serious addiction or mental illness, so theres a provision to apply to court to have nes reduced.

Oen theyve accrued the nes as a result of one of these factors.

For example, they might spend time on public transport because theyre homeless, which also means they cant aord a Myki.

Ms Lewers said the free centre could help young people to apply for a payment plan if there were no special circumstances surrounding their infringements.

We also see a lot of minor-debt issues, where young people are signing up to mobile phone contracts they cant aord and things just get out of hand, Ms Lewers said.

a Youth, Community and the Law Program. e program works with young oenders for three-month periods before they are sentenced, aiming to reduce risk factors and causes of reoending behaviour.

e Sunshine and Werribee magistrates courts refer young people to the program, which Sunshine court co-ordinating magistrate Norine Toohey says is about preventing recidivism.

ese programs arent just looking at someone who comes before a court with no prior criminal history, she said.

Were dealing with young oenders who do have criminal histories, so other things havent worked.

Accountant Greg Ziegler is always dealing in dollars. But theres one gure the Hillside resident has focused on since last September he wants to raise a whooping $10,220 for youth suicide awareness and prevention.

Mr Ziegler was spurred into action aer a seemingly happy 19-year-old work colleague took his own life last year.

We had no idea there was anything wrong. He was one of those guys who tted in with everyone, really sociable and smart, the business owner said. One Tuesday morning, we got a call from his aunt telling us the bad news.

He said it shook up his young team pretty badly and, as a parent of 15-year-old twin sons

and a 10-year-old daughter, it really hit home.My personal thing was if we couldnt help

this kid, how could we potentially help others in a similar situation? the 42-year-old said.

So I thought Id go on this journey and raise as much as I could for others who may be in the same place.

Mr Ziegler has completed the Noosa triathlon, the Ballarat Half Ironman and is now preparing for the Melbourne Ironman in March. Funds raised go to ReachOut.com, an online mental health service for young people. Donate at give.everydayhero.com/au/greg-34. Lifeline: 13 11 14 or www.reachout.com.

Ruling the roost as a grade 6 pupil in primary school then moving to the bottom of the ladder in year 7 at the secondary stage can be a challenge.

The transition from primary to secondary school means separating from friends, adapting to a new environment and new teachers, and becoming more independent all of which can be daunting. But there are ways parents can support their children to help make the changeover easier.

Firstly, parents can tell their children about the positives associated with starting secondary school, to get them excited rather than just nervous.

Discuss making new friends, learning a wider variety of subjects and having contact with more teachers who can provide extra learning support. Its important to talk about what the child is most looking forward to as well as what worries them.

Attend an orientation day or take a school tour with your child. This way, they familiarise themselves with their new learning environment, thereby feeling less overwhelmed when it comes to actually starting secondary school. Find out whether

theres a buddy system at the school the child can be linked into. Thats where, for example, year 8 students befriend year 7s and take them under their wing.

When your child knows what subjects theyll be studying, set up a routine with them for homework to ensure they allow time for each subject and encourage them to use their student diary but be sure to include leisure time.

Ensure your child has a quiet, dedicated place to study, away from the TV and other distractions. And encourage him or her to join extra-curricular activities to meet like-minded friends through the schools music or sport programs.

After children start secondary school, their behaviours and attitudes may change, so its crucial to keep boundaries in place for them to stay on track.

For children who dont seem to be coping well initially with secondary school, use of the schools counsellor may prove benecial, and dont forget to talk with other parents in the same position. Their tips can help, too.

    A Proud Community Growing Together

Its mid February, the kids are back at school, and Ive settled in for another productive year as both your elected Council representative and dedicated primary teacher. With school zones packed in the morning and

afternoon once again, I urge drivers to take care on our roads, especially during drop-off and pick-up times. I also encourage parents and guardians to let their kids walk, cycle, skate or scoot to school each day. Not only is this fun for kids, but it also congestion on our roads.

lovely warm days. And what better way to celebrate than at Councils much loved Summersault festival, on Saturday, 21 February? Justice Crew will be performing, as will Pierce Brothers, The Voices Johnny Rollins and Caroline Springs own Omar Dean. You can visit the market stalls and food bazaar, jump on a carnival ride, participate in a range of sport and leisure off a fabulous day. Whatever your interest, come along with family and friends and celebrate all thats great about the City of Melton. Visit melton.vic.gov.au for more information.

free, six-week program designed to encourage outdoor physical activity, later this month. Get Active in the City of Melton features a range of fun activities to encourage kids and adults to explore our local parks and reserves. For more information visit Councils website.

If you have for any ideas or issues for Watts Ward please contact me on 0438 057 807 or [email protected]

One of the best things about summer in the City of Melton is the chance to enjoy the sights, annual festival, Summersault.
