Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) The BSW programme The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is a four-year programme at National NQF level 8. The aim of the programme is to develop social work professionals committed to promoting human well-being, social inclusion, human rights, equality, people empowerment and social justice for all. Learning programme The programme requires 662 credits and includes fundamental, core and elective modules. • Fundamental modules: Academic Information Management and Academic Literacy • Core and elective modules: Social Work (theory), Social Work (practice), Sociology, Business Management, Welfare Law, Criminology and Psychology First-year social work modules open to all students for enrollment Theory and practice training integrated throughout the four-year programme • Practice training in laboratory settings • Field placements with social work service providers in the community Social workers engage in: the protection of vulnerable and marginalised people in the community, such as children, youth, older persons, people with disabilities, women and the poor; developing, influencing and evaluating social policy; and promoting social change and social justice. The levels of social work intervention include: • prevention; • early intervention; protection; • rehabilitation; aftercare and reintegration; and development. Selection for the BSW degree at the end of the first year of study according to: - academic achievement; - psychometric tests for career assessment; and - a personal interview.
